00:00Newcastle United have again been linked with a move for Burnley's James Trafford this summer.
00:05Sky Sports reported on Tuesday that Newcastle were in talks over a move and that Burnley valued Trafford at about £30m.
00:13Now we all know Newcastle's interest in James Trafford doesn't just start this summer, it started well back last year.
00:19They had a bid rejected by Burnley for him and it was a deal that was almost signed and sealed.
00:25I think everyone assumed Trafford this time last year would become a Newcastle United player
00:29but we all know the financial restrictions that Newcastle United had, the mad scramble at the end of June to sell players
00:35and signing someone of Trafford's calibre as much as it would have been around £20m just wasn't in their budget
00:41and wasn't financially possible at that time.
00:45So they've had to wait a year, of course that means Trafford has had its value increase, I wouldn't say exponentially
00:51but increased certainly a lot. He had a fantastic season, conceded just 16 goals in the Championship,
00:56kept 29 clean sheets. For any mathematicians out there that means that he didn't concede more than one goal in any championship game last year
01:03which is an absolutely phenomenal start. He racked up clean sheet records after clean sheet records
01:08so it was a brilliant season for him and obviously that's increased his value.
01:13Burnley getting promoted to the Premier League has not only increased his value again a little bit more
01:17but also Burnley's negotiating power. Trafford spoke of his desire to play in the Premier League
01:23and I think if Burnley hadn't got promoted to the Premier League then that would have been a really easy deal to do.
01:28Now they'll be promoted, obviously Newcastle are going to face hurdles and Burnley aren't going to be willing sellers.
01:32Let's face it, they don't want to lose their main goalkeeper on the eve or before their Premier League season.
01:37Scott Parker's team were built on a solid defence with Trafford as part of that defence
01:41so they're not going to want to lose their main goalkeeper.
01:44So Newcastle are going to find it more difficult.
01:46They still had to get a deal over the line but it's clear that he is a player that they've identified
01:50that they want in their squad. He's 22 years old which means he's probably got, what do goalkeepers have?
01:56Maybe 15 years potentially left in the top of this game, certainly 10 years.
02:00So Newcastle I think are banking on the fact that even if they have to spend 30, 40 million this summer
02:04that'll be a deal that sort of helps them long term that they can spend 40 million now on a goalkeeper.
02:11See, you know, see that figure.
02:13But then they've got him in their team for the next 10 years and potentially future England and number one as well.
02:18So yeah, that's a move that Newcastle will hope to get done.
02:21Of course, the first transfer deadline shut on this week so they've now got to wait six more days
02:27before they can get any deals done but I don't think that'll certainly not panic the club.
02:31I think fans have obviously shown their maybe frustrations a little bit that Newcastle
02:35haven't got anything done in that first window but ultimately the season doesn't start for another two months.
02:40You know, they don't kick a ball in pre-season training really for another at least three or four weeks.
02:44So there's no need to panic just now. Newcastle will be identifying targets.
02:48And of course, Trafford one is well known and well publicised.
02:51I think they will be one that they feel confident they're getting a deal done.
02:54But of course, as I've mentioned before, that we're like Bernie negotiating.
02:58You know, Trafford wanting to come. Other clubs not coming in to discover a deal
03:01as we've seen with people like Liam De Lapp, Brian O'Boimo this summer.
03:05So yeah, Newcastle night is interesting. James Trafford continues.
03:08And I'm sure this will be potentially one that rumbles on throughout the summer.
03:12But it's a deal that you want to get done. It's a deal that probably will happen.
03:16I think if you ask many Newcastle fans, I think a lot of them have got their hearts set on Trafford
03:19to come in there. Their new goalkeeper and, you know, either challenging Nick Pope for a starting spot
03:23or, of course, if Nick Pope leaves and then Trafford is their number one.
03:28So I think, as always, Newcastle fans, and, you know, you can't get too attached to a player
03:33until the staff, as, you know, as I said, once I'm pictured on the St James' Park pitch
03:38and announce. But yeah, James Trafford remains there. Newcastle night his number one goalkeeper.
03:42And of course, the best way to stay up to do with all the latest James Trafford news
03:45and the rest of Newcastle night transfer business throughout the summer is with the Shields Gazette.
