00:00And today we are going to talk about the combat martial skill,
00:04Chun Tu Mu Sul, or as some people call it, the standing combat martial art.
00:10I would like to tell you that this is one of my favorite martial arts,
00:13because it's a mix between standing art and groundwork.
00:17Some people will say that the standing part is more important than the groundwork,
00:21but I can tell you that both parts are very, very important.
00:26This is an old combat style, but at the same time,
00:29it's a very modern combat style for self-defense and fighting.
00:32Now let's go through the history of this martial art.
00:36In the past, this martial art was called Shugong, which means skill of fighting with weapons.
00:43But later on, it was also known as Samgung, meaning three skills,
00:47where the three skills refer to handwork, footwork, and breathing.
00:52This martial art has its root in shirinji-ryu karate, goju-ryu karate, and wechi-ryu karate.
01:00It's well known that Okinawa was a place where many martial arts were born.
01:05Back in the days, there were a lot of small clans,
01:08and they all had their own fighting styles and methods.
01:11The main purpose of having these fighting skills back then was for fighting
01:15and for protecting yourself and your family.
01:17When the government banned swords, a lot of martial arts practitioners had to get rid of their weapons
01:23and start practicing empty-handed fighting.
01:26That's why, if you look back in history, a lot of martial arts were created after that event.
01:31For example, shirinji-ryu karate and goju-ryu karate.
01:36If you look at the characteristics of this martial art,
01:39the stances are mostly low and close to the ground.
01:41That's why a lot of people consider this martial art to be more of a groundwork style.
01:46However, as I said before, it has its roots in karate,
01:50so the basic techniques come from karate.
01:53If you compare this martial art to other martial arts,
01:56the arm movements are similar to those of Muay Thai,
01:59and the leg movements are closer to those of a wrestler.
02:03This makes this martial art very special.
02:05Also, the groundwork of this martial art is very interesting
02:09because it's different from judo, jiu-jitsu, or any other grappling style.
02:13So now let's get into details.
02:16We will talk about some of the basic techniques and how they work.
02:19If you look at the stances,
02:21they are a little bit wider than normal karate stances.
02:24You have to keep your center of gravity very low and stay very relaxed.
02:29In general, the stance is called heiko dachi,
02:31and it's also used in karate.
02:33If you look at the arm position,
02:35the elbows are always pointing down,
02:38and the hands are always covering your face.
02:41The most common blocks come from your arms and your elbows,
02:44and the main reason for this is to keep your head close to your opponent.
02:48If you keep your head far away from your opponent,
02:51he can easily kick your head and hurt you badly.
02:54The main idea of Chun-Tsim martial art
02:56is to use your head to attack and to defend.
02:59That's why you need to be always close to your opponent.
03:02The way you move forward is by stepping with your lead foot first,
03:06and then you follow up with your back foot.
03:08This is a very important rule in Chun-Du-Mu-Sul.
03:12If you try to step with your back foot first,
03:14you will lose your balance and fall over.
03:17And the reason for that is because your weight is concentrated on your toes.
03:21So, when you step with your back foot first,
03:24you put your whole body weight on that foot,
03:26and you end up falling over.
03:28But when you step with your front foot first,
03:31you distribute your body weight evenly between both feet.
03:34There is a way that you can counterbalance your opponent's attack
03:38while moving forward.
03:40And that's what we call Fui Chagi.
03:42Basically, when you step forward,
03:44you move your hands in an arc shape.
03:47This helps you to check your opponent's punch,
03:50and at the same time, you attack his leg.
03:52Now, the cool thing is that while you are attacking his leg,
03:55you also throw him off balance.
03:57This will definitely surprise your opponent.
04:00You can also move backward,
04:02and the way to do this is by stepping with your back foot first,
04:06and then you follow up with your front foot.
04:08This is the opposite of stepping forward.
04:11There is also another movement that you can do backward,
04:14and that's what we call the back kick.
04:16And basically, this is a round kick that you throw with your back leg.
04:20Let's take a look at the punches.
04:21There are two basic types of punches in this martial art,
04:25the straight punch and the hook punch.
04:28You can throw these punches with both hands,
04:30but the most common ones are thrown with your dominant hand.
04:34The straight punch is a very basic punch
04:36that you learn in almost every martial art.
04:39And as for the hook punch, you can throw it in two ways.
04:42You can throw it from the top down or from the bottom up.
04:45The most effective hook punch is the one that comes from the bottom up.
04:49This punch is very powerful because you are using your body weight
04:53to enhance the speed and the power of your punch.
04:56The block that you use for the hook punch is called at-deco.
05:00You raise your elbow and rotate it downward,
05:02and at the same time, you turn your upper body away from your opponent.
05:06There are two types of kicks,
05:08the front kick and the round kick.
05:11The front kick is very similar to a front push kick in taekwondo.
05:14This kick is very fast and powerful.
05:18If you know how to use it well, it can knock out your opponent.
05:21As for the round kick, it's more of a combat-style kick,
05:25so it's not like a side kick or a hook kick in taekwondo.
05:28Here, the shin is angled towards the opponent's body.
05:32The target for this kick is the body and sometimes the head.
05:36This kick is very powerful,
05:38and you can use it both offensively and defensively.
05:40For example, you can use it to counter your opponent's punch,
05:44or you can also use it to attack his body while he's trying to punch you.
05:48When you practice the round kick,
05:50you need to concentrate on your supporting leg.
05:52It needs to be very strong and stable.
05:55Otherwise, you won't be able to generate enough power with your kick.
05:59If you are practicing this kick,
06:00you should try to kick a pad held by your instructor as hard as you can.
06:05What you will notice is that you won't be able to kick hard
06:07unless your supporting leg is very strong.
06:09Once you master the round kick,
06:12you can use it very well in your self-defense tactics.
06:15In Chun-Moore school, we have what we call the five elements.
06:18These five elements are the basic handworks that you use in Chun-Moore school.
06:23In order to use these five elements well,
06:25you need to know the structure of your hand.
06:28Your hand has five knuckles.
06:30If you count from the top,
06:32the first knuckle is the one next to your finger.
06:35The second one is the one that makes a fist.
06:37The third one is next to your thumb.
06:40The fourth one is under the first knuckle.
06:42And the last one is under the second knuckle.
06:45If you look at your hand in this way,
06:47it's easier for you to understand how to apply these five elements.
06:52These five elements are based on traditional Chinese medicine.
06:56According to traditional Chinese medicine,
06:58the human body works like a magnet.
07:01All the organs inside the body are connected by invisible energy lines.
07:05In martial arts, we call them meridians.
07:09And according to traditional Chinese medicine,
07:11the five elements represent the five major internal organs.
07:15So if you hit your opponent in the correct way,
07:18you can cause serious damage.
07:20Let's see how you can hit your opponent with the five elements.
07:23First, start with your fist.
07:26Make sure that your fist is tight.
07:28Don't leave any space between your knuckles.
07:30Then hit your opponent on the side of his ribcage.
07:32After that, hit the side of his abdomen.
07:35Then use your open hand and hit the center of his chest.
07:38Follow up with your back fist and hit his jawline.
07:41Then finish it off with your elbow and hit his neck.
07:45In total, you will have used all your five elements.
07:48Of course, you need to be very careful when you hit someone with these five elements.
07:53Otherwise, you might hurt him badly.
07:55As I said before,
07:56these five elements are based on traditional Chinese medicine.
07:59So they work best on the center line of the body.
08:03If you hit someone with these five elements on the outside of the body,
08:06they won't work.
08:08That's why you need to practice these five elements on a heavy bag.
08:12Try to hit the center line of the bag.
08:14If you hit the outside of the bag,
08:16you won't feel much resistance.
08:18But if you hit the center line of the bag,
08:20you will feel a lot of resistance.
08:22And that's what you call proper body mechanics.
08:25We have many videos about the five elements.
08:28You can check them out in our video section.
08:31So today we talked about the basics of combat martial skills,
08:34or as some people call it,
08:36the standing combat martial art.
08:38I hope that you enjoyed this video.
