00:07But for tonight we'll recite and read from Iya Ulamud Deen and all tariqahs of the seven
00:15nafs and each one can hear we won't get to seven we'll get to maybe two or three if
00:21we're lucky of the nafs.
00:24The names of your nafs, its bad characteristics and a little bit of the understanding of its
00:30danger then you'll see how these teachings have implemented all of that reality.
00:37This is the whole system of their teaching and it's all meant to go after that.
00:42InshaAllah Haji Yahya has a good English and he likes to read.
00:47So nice and pronunciation and not too fast shaykh.
00:51If we go over something then I'll tell you to stop a second.
00:58So the first level of the nafs, hello?
01:05The nafs amara.
01:06Nafs amara.
01:08This is the evil self.
01:14In this first level of the development of man the rational self and human conscious have
01:19been overtaken by carnal desires.
01:22At this stage our self does not recognize the rational or moral limits on the way to achieve
01:27what it wants.
01:28This first level expresses itself in selfishness, arrogance, hardness of heart, oppression of
01:35others, lack of gratitude, ambition, stinginess, envy, anger, cynicism, laziness and stupidity.
01:43Hold on, do we know anybody like that?
01:50I don't want to know anybody's names.
01:53But when we go over these this is for us our own diagnosis like a medical class.
01:59You read what they describe these awliyaullah from teachings of Prophet ﷺ.
02:04This is the immense science of the self.
02:07So when you see somebody of these characteristics they're nafs amara.
02:13That they are not accepting anything from the heavens and their understanding is to enjoy
02:19this life with whatever ability they can regardless of who's affected who's helped
02:26and who's harmed by it.
02:28Thus the self on this level is attached to the worst of characteristics against which we
02:34have been warned by Allah and His Prophet.
02:36For instance, self-admiration, arrogance and pride, hardness of the heart, oppression of
02:41creatures, fondness of exposing the faults of others, lying, gossip, backbiting, envy,
02:47jealousy, criticism, undeserved self-praise, bitterness, attachment to what belongs to others
02:53even if it possesses something better, lack of contentment, constant complaining, lack
02:58of gratitude, blindness to blessings, wishing to increase without effort, extreme selfishness,
03:04greed and covetedness which knows no bounds.
03:09Like TV now, there's not a television station or channel that they call news and it's not
03:16news it's just this.
03:18It's a whole bunch of nafsah amara people sitting in front of a camera displaying all
03:24these characteristics.
03:27What they call talk shows, commentary, there's no more news on the television there's nobody
03:31reporting news.
03:33They're just one after another doing every type bad characteristic, why?
03:38So that when you watch it you begin to absorb it and you think this becomes a normal for
03:44you.
03:45That you'll go out and you'll do this.
03:47If you are doing these things then you're at the level of nafsah amara.
03:52So you don't have to admit to your shaykh what think, how high you think you are.
03:57You just read this and say, oh that's where I am, yes this is your maqam.
04:06Love of control, love of self and its desires, hatred for those who criticize it even if it
04:12is for its own good and love for those who praise it even if it is in hypocrisy, rejection
04:17of advice and counsel and only talking about itself.
04:21Originally the nafs, the false ego was one of the creator's gifts to man.
04:25But because we allow the nafs to lean towards material values, to take pleasure only in worldly
04:30life our nafs has become almost animal like while its shape remains that of a human being.
04:36This nafs is our worst enemy who is living inside of us, dominating and tyrannizing us,
04:41and keeping our human soul imprisoned and forgotten in the depths of our subconscious.
04:46On the level of commanding nafs, influences are very heavy.
04:49Unless somebody wise and strong holds you by your hand and takes you out, it is very difficult,
04:53if not impossible, to get rid of these influences.
04:57When we follow our rational decision and are rescued from our misery by a strong teacher,
05:01then we may rise to the second level, the blaming self, nafs, lawama.
05:06Thus the soul is pulled out from the dark dungeon of the ego to the light of conscience.
05:11And we will see our arrogance being transformed into humility, vengefulness, and hate into love,
05:17anger into kindness, lust into chastity, if Allah so wills.
05:22The remembrance that is appropriate for its treatment is la ilaha illallah.
05:28So then understanding these and then we ask ourself, am I at that?
05:34So when people understand they have a lot of bad desires, a lot of bad characteristics,
05:38they're not changing their characteristics, then this is to understand that this nafs of
05:44mine is at that level and it continuously pulling me towards the badness.
05:50So we come to tariqah because they're showing there's no help for you with yourself, there's
05:57no self-help, has to be through Allah giving guidance.
06:01When Allah gives guidance He dispatches the lion tamers.
06:06So that to begin to send an energy, a teaching, a reality, stop what you're doing and by
06:13accompanying these associations and watching the teachings, taking the faiz and the lights
06:18of these teachings, making the madad and the taweez and all of these things or all the implementations
06:26to lift amara out and to take the servant out of a deceitful character and to acknowledge
06:34Allah , to feel it, to love it and to understand the Divinely Presence inshaAllah.
06:40Now that if we rise from that bad characteristic then 99% of those in tariqahs are trying to
06:52stay in this category.
06:56The blaming self.
06:58This is the second step in the development of man where man becomes aware of his actions,
07:02is able to differentiate right from wrong and regrets his wrongdoings.
07:06Yet he is not able to totally stop doing wrong because it is very difficult to break the habits
07:11of his previous state.
07:13He tries to follow the obligations of his religion and he prays, fasts, pays alms and tries to
07:18behave properly.
07:19But he wants to be known as a reformed person.
07:22He publicizes his piety, his good deeds and expects appreciation from people.
07:27This makes his behavior hypocritical.
07:30Sometimes he realizes this, regrets it and tries to change.
07:33Hypocrisy is the principal danger in this state.
07:36There are…
07:37Just one sec.
07:39This is important understanding, the hypocrisy.
07:43But it's not for you to change the prescription.
07:47They want you to be and to acknowledge your hypocrisy.
07:51Not you change it, we say I'll change my image and do every bad thing.
07:55No they want you to be a long bearded pious looking person being obnoxious and angry with
08:00everybody so that you can feel shame.
08:03The shaming will stop you from it.
08:06So when growing up, we grow our beard real quick.
08:10As soon as my mom would see Maldana, she'd say, why this guy with this beard he gets so
08:15angry?
08:18Every single time.
08:19There was not a time she could spare me from humiliation.
08:22In front of everybody, 40, 50 people, Maldana, Maldana, I have a question, why they have
08:26beard and hat and they're so angry?
08:31Solution wasn't you take your hat off and shave your beard and say, no I want to be an
08:35angry person just don't want anyone to know it.
08:41No this was a protection and a reminder of my hypocrisy.
08:47And at some point you feel like, this is horrible Ya Rabbi and you cry that, don't let me be
08:52and to die as a munafiq where I have this image of my beard, my turban, my company, my
08:58shaykh I'm doing all these things and doing every type of horrific act.
09:05They want you to feel your hypocrisy and they cry out to Allah , remove this hypocrisy
09:12from me so that I'm worthy of what I'm trying to follow and the image I'm trying
09:17to display.
09:20But shaitan comes whispers, now we'll go into he whisper, don't take it off, leave hypocrisy.
09:25What do you mean leave hypocrisy?
09:27Then you're telling me to be a criminal again, be a robber?
09:31No, leave hypocrisy.
09:34Hypocrisy means don't do the bad actions, not I'm going to continue to do the bad actions
09:38but I just don't want to look like a Muhammadan.
09:46There are two other grave dangers as well, arrogance and anger.
09:50Every little attempt to be good compared to the previous state seems like a major achievement.
09:54So we think we are the best and get angry with others who do not seem to respect us.
10:01Arrogance, hypocrisy, anger, intolerance and lying to ourselves can overtake us.
10:06At the level of nafs-i lawama, the devil injects his character of arrogance into our veins and
10:11whispers into our ear, you are as good as your teachers now.
10:15Not only do you know as much as they do, the way you behave is better.
10:18If they were able to apply what they teach in their own lives, they wouldn't be half what
10:22you are.
10:23You don't need their preaching or their advice.
10:25Now let people see your wisdom and your deeds so that you will be an example to them.
10:29Not only the whisperings of the devil, but all worldly life is against the seeker at
10:33this stage.
10:36It is a self that is in constant fluctuation between obedience and disobedience.
10:40One time it is heedless and falls, and another it is aware and resists.
10:44This is the natural station which we start from at birth, and from there we descend or ascend.
10:49Its sign is the fluctuation between the characteristics of the people of this world and the people of
10:53the next world.
10:55It is not the same base condition as the commanding self, but the two desires of immortality and
10:59sovereignty are still active in it although in a much reduced or weakened condition.
11:05This is the first stage of salvation for the self and the first step towards its purification
11:09and success.
11:10Alhamdulillah.
11:14With that understanding that's enough for now inshaAllah we'll go into the rest maybe tomorrow.
11:21But the importance of understanding the self and thinking that because of the energies,
11:31because of the strength of the shaykhs that we reach somewhere.
11:35And the reminder is, no you're taking the faiz of shaykhs that reach somewhere but to know
11:42yourself is to know your lord.
11:45When you see what category you fit and what the character and the characteristics of the
11:52nafs are then much easier for us to understand and to be humble with that understanding.
11:59And its remedy is the presence and strong presence of the shaykh.
12:06For if you're not strong in the presence with the shaykh you will fall into the deceit of
12:13shaykh.
12:14We can read a little bit of nafs al mulhamma, the inspired self.
12:23So that when we leave the bad actions and we think that if we are capable of leaving the
12:30bad actions and not having arrogance and not having pride.
12:35And this arrogance and pride is based on notion of hypocrisy.
12:41The arrogance and pride of trying to promote and there's nothing there and you know the
12:46badness that you do and then promote yourself as good.
12:50Mulhamma, inshaAllah.
12:54The inspired self.
12:56The balanced or inspired self, the third level is the state in which the good has begun
13:00to predominate in this struggle.
13:02The tyranny of egoism has been overcome and a more or less integrated self is attained.
13:07The quality awakened here is the renunciation of worldly longings and ambitions, of freedom
13:14from the conditions of desire.
13:16This state is the aim of most religion and psychology.
13:19It is the boundary of conventional ego development.
13:22Although it is only the third level of human development in the Sufi system, it is no minor
13:26accomplishment.
13:27For some it requires a great deal of personal, psychological work and of course the blessings
13:33of Allah.
13:34This is a stage where the seeker is rewarded for his efforts, persistence and obedience
13:38to his highest self and his spiritual teacher.
13:41Now he occasionally receives messages from inside of himself, soundless, wordless inspirations
13:46which give him direction, encouragement and the strength to continue in his advancement.
13:51Yet there are still grave dangers.
13:53The devil is capable of imitating divine inspirations.
13:57So, we reach a point in which we try to control the obvious bad, the arrogance, the wildness
14:12of the character, the ocean of hypocrisy.
14:15Everyone's going to go through it.
14:16If you don't feel that you've been through it then maybe you're not there yet.
14:20There's no way to leave it.
14:22You don't jump over that ocean.
14:24The ocean of hypocrisy has to be felt that you're trying to exemplify good character and
14:31you're yelling at home.
14:34You're trying to exemplify good character, you're yelling at work where you think nobody
14:37sees you.
14:38You're doing bizarre things on the internet.
14:41All of these things is ocean of hypocrisy.
14:46Giving advice to people when you have yourself know that you're completely empty.
14:51That you're crazy and going giving advice for marital life and people's lives.
14:59Most psychiatrists are crazy and they're giving people advice.
15:03So from an ocean of nifaq and hypocrisy to give people advice when the advice should have
15:10been for yourself.
15:13So then tariqah comes and says, advise only yourself, talk only to yourself, build yourself.
15:19So that Allah doesn't keep looking at you as a hypocrite.
15:25That's why then the path was based on silence.
15:29Don't look at the one who talks and think, I should be talking too.
15:33Put a rock in your mouth.
15:34The one who's talking is in big trouble with Allah for his hypocrisy or her hypocrisy.
15:43It's not about that.
15:44You want to stop the hypocrisy.
15:47You're on a path in which to build yourself.
15:49Every time you make a mistake, astaghfirullah.
15:52Every time your family is angry with you, forgive me, forgive me, ask them for forgiveness
15:57and then begin to pray to Allah for forgiveness, Ya Rabbi, take me out of this ocean of the
16:03munafiqeen.
16:04Don't let me to die in this state of munafiqeen.
16:08So we have to traverse you know this is like the Siratul Mustaqeem and say, I'm not going
16:12to go over the fire.
16:13No, everyone walks the line, nobody has left it.
16:19So everything you do and identify yourself but you're angry and explosive and fiery and
16:25all these characteristics that we described then Allah looks to you, you're hypocrite.
16:31So then you should be crying every night to get out of hypocrisy.
16:36Not that you take off your Islam but you take off shaitan.
16:42Don't leave Allah to run into the hands of shaitan but to throw out shaitan so that you
16:47are with Rahman.
16:49The next level that they begin to step into that ocean is that the overwhelming
16:55faiz and energies, their practices and all of their disciplines are now moving in onto
17:02them, dressing them, blessing them and the knowledges they acquired are real for them
17:09and they have a firmness in their faith and they firmly fought against the hypocrisy of
17:15their character.
17:16And they didn't speak until they were ordered to speak because they knew their hypocrisy.
17:22Now what?
17:28That is why at this stage the guidance of a master is so necessary.
17:32One who will be able to distinguish the true inspirations from the false imaginations.
17:36It is during this period that the relation between the seeker and his master has to be the closest.
17:41The seeker should not hide anything from his teacher.
17:43He should reveal all his hopes, his fears and his faults.
17:47Even if he feels resentment or opposition to his teacher, he has to confess these to him.
17:52They are like the symptoms of a disease which a sick person must reveal to the doctor in
17:56whom he has confidence.
17:58Just as he heeds the advice given or the diet prescribed or diligently takes the medicine
18:03given, if he obeys the counsel of his master he will be able to advance.
18:07Another affliction during this period is a change in understanding and sensibility.
18:11It is as if he forgets all that he knew, even his idea of himself.
18:15New impressions do not correspond to the old ones.
18:18He is able, he is apt to see things differently, to misunderstand them, to make mistakes.
18:23He feels as if he does not exist.
18:25He may imagine that he has reached the final level of fanafillah to lose oneself in Allah.
18:31But this feeling has nothing to do with that high state.
18:33He should realize that it is a state of helplessness, of emptiness, a state of desperate need.
18:39This is the last level of danger for the self for it is still vulnerable to descending to
18:43the lower stages of blame and commanding.
18:46At this stage the two desires for immortality and sovereignty are dormant except in passing
18:50thoughts.
18:53Means then its survival is a strong relation with the shaykh.
18:57Why?
18:58So that you're not living in your imaginary world.
19:00You're not to listen to your inspirations, you're not to listen and follow your inspirations.
19:05Your inspirations are only for your ibadah.
19:11You don't make any decisions based on what you feel is coming to your heart.
19:16Because in this training they're teaching it's not your heart that you're dealing with.
19:22You're not in Divinely Presence.
19:24You're in the presence of shaytan and your nafs, the two shariq.
19:28And they're trying to inspire you to go and do things without asking your living guide.
19:35And now by help me at Nurmuhammad.com you don't have to ask about the colour of the paint
19:40of your house.
19:42These are just major decisions in which you're going to make a decision.
19:45I'm leaving the tariqah, I'm leaving the zikr, I'm doing this, I'm going to go now seek
19:51out this person to help me with this magic.
19:54Not supposed to do anything of that nature other than deal with your shaykh.
20:01Because now shaytan is trying to play with you in religious and pious matters.
20:06I've said that's why you see all the people in a community start to make their own centres.
20:14They have one community masjid they go make another masjid.
20:18They think they've been inspired by God to do that to break a community for what?
20:25This is the bad ego and that's when people are falling prey to that because they don't
20:30have a shaykh.
20:31And when they have firmness with their guide it's not that they listen to him because
20:36nobody listens to the guide.
20:38But at least you can take his advice and say, his advice seems to be very different than
20:43these two guys who are whispering in my ears because the one who's whispering is trying
20:49to fool us with deceit.
20:52And in acts of piety like we said before, take off your hypocrisy, no no no don't take
20:57off your hypocrisy wear it proudly and take shaytan off.
21:03Never leave Allah's way.
21:05You want to die in a state where you're completely following Allah's way.
21:11Not to follow the satanic way and that's how he fools people and thinking this is a religious
21:18inspiration.
21:19And there are many examples most of which you can't talk about onto the internet of unbelievable
21:24things that people are thinking they should do this, they should do that, they should
21:27not do this.
21:28No, no, no, no, no.
21:30These are you know these are just the wild whisperings of the nafs to make the student
21:36to fall into a hole and into an ocean of difficulty.
21:40We pray that Allah guide us.
21:42This is a path into the cave in the heart of Sayyidina Muhammad ﷺ and that Allah dress
21:48us and bless us who knows himself will know his Lord.
21:51And this way of realities is to know myself, know my nafs, know what's happening and what
21:59tricks are coming upon me and then I have to leave.
22:0399.9% are in the ocean of hypocrisy.
22:07And all night long they should be praying and we should be praying, Ya Rabbi take away nafah,
22:11take away all this hypocrisy.
22:13Don't let me to die as a munafiq.
