Meta reaches deal with Constellation Energy

Meta has joined its fellow tech company’s in teaming up with the energy sector.

00:00In March, some of the world's biggest tech companies signed a pledge to triple the amount

00:03of nuclear energy used across the globe. Now, Meta is backing up that pledge. The company

00:08announced a new 20-year partnership with Constellation Energy that will help Meta grow its data centers.

00:13Starting in 2027, Meta will buy around 1.1 gigawatts of energy from Constellation's

00:17Clinton Clean Energy Center in Illinois. That accounts for the entire output of the plant's

00:22lone nuclear reactor. Without the deal, Constellation said the center was in danger of closing.

00:26CEO Joe Dominguez said,

00:28We are proud to partner with Meta. They figured out that supporting the relicensing and expansion

00:32of existing plants is just as impactful as finding new sources of energy.

00:36Sometimes the most important part of our journey forward is to stop taking steps backward.

00:40Meta is the latest tech company to partner with the energy sector. Microsoft had previously reached

00:44a deal with Constellation to reopen Three Mile Island. Google has a partnership with Kairos Power,

00:49and Amazon bought a data center that's powered by Susquehanna Nuclear Plant.

00:53Terms of the Meta Constellation deal were not disclosed.
