00:00The front page of the Times today says exercise proves the best therapy for keeping cancer at bay.
00:06Let's get the views of Tim Vincent.
00:07It's quite an exciting trial this. There's new findings every single day, isn't there?
00:14But I think this has been in over many years by a lot of people.
00:18And it actually says, you know, what you'd assume would be the case is that if you exercise,
00:23then it keeps your health in a better condition and will keep cancer from returning.
00:30Measurably, notably, I think it's 30 something percent.
00:35And this is this is on people that have had cancer and then are encouraged to exercise.
00:39And there's many doctors over the years have said, you know, not quite sure if you feel like you can exercise and exercise.
00:44They're now saying you should exercise as soon as you feel good enough.
00:49This just makes me feel awful because I would have been pro exercise, except I can't move.
00:57I'm in a wheelchair now and I can't put on the right trainers, the right I can't change.
01:02I can't go to the showers. I can't do things.
01:04And it's just I can't stand up.
01:07And so there are a lot of people who are incapable of exercising.
01:11And therefore, rightly so, we see their increase of cancer growing.
01:16Absolutely. And that's that's an issue that everybody's going to face.
01:19And you're obviously in a really difficult position.
01:21Any exercise, I think, is going to help, especially for these people that had cancer once and can get out there.
01:28And it's very isolating as well.
01:29So you're actually saying if you're in redemption from cancer or whatever, you could keep it at bay by exercising.
01:37It's actually better than a pill. The results are actually better than a pill.
01:42I think it's 36 percent, isn't it, for exercise compared to 26 percent for drugs.
01:46It's common sense, isn't it? We were talking in the green room before to keep yourself fit as much as you can or as whatever you are allowed to do is a good idea.
01:55You're a fit looking boy. What do you do during the week?
01:59Do you know what? I've come to did you see there was a big review recently?
02:02And I thought, this is absolutely nonsense, but it is true that exercise doesn't get doesn't take weight off.
02:08And I thought, well, that's ridiculous. I've spent 30, 40 years going to the gym and trying to keep fit.
02:12But once you exercise, you become ravenous afterwards. You want to eat.
02:15That's true. And it's a big thing.
02:17It's, you know, you have to take less calories in than you don't.
02:20And that's what I do now. I don't eat before midday.
02:23I was going to some fasting.
02:24The vino collapse, so I now monitor a little bit more on my intake.
02:28And luckily, I have young children, so half the week I don't have any alcohol anyway.
02:32And that's your cardio done.
02:33That's my cardio done, running around.
02:36People get scared by this term exercise.
02:38It's like, oh, my God, I've got to literally go and run marathons or go to the gym every day.
02:43Well, you're a great advocate. You're very good.
02:45In this study, we are talking about going for a walk.
02:48You know, just like it can be gentle exercise.
02:50Or lifting some weights.
02:52Anything, Ellie, that can help, absolutely.
02:54So even if you are like you, Eamon, you have less mobility, there is some form of exercise you can do,
02:59even if it's like upper body exercise with weights and stuff like that.
03:02So every little bit helps.
03:03And there's a psychological benefit as well.
03:05I mean, I know we're talking about cancer here and obviously the physical benefits.
03:09But it's good for up here as well.
03:12Mental.
03:12If you're battling cancer, that's a very important aspect as well.
03:15If you are battling it, good luck to you.
