New data shows e-scooter related injuries are escalating in Queensland

New data from the Jamieson Trauma institute shows Queensland hospitals are seeing an increase in e-scooter injuries.

00:00Well this data which has come from the Jamison Trauma Institute has found that

00:06e-scooter related injuries of hospital presentations around 30 hospitals

00:12across the state has increased to 150 per month. Now that's a 50% increase from

00:18two years ago and researchers say that they're particularly concerned there's

00:22been more common severe facial and head injuries. They also say that private

00:27e-scooter riders are making up the majority of these hospital presentations

00:31largely due to the fact that e-scooter riders privately are traveling at higher

00:36speeds than others. Now this comes as some forensic crash investigation unit is

00:41continuing their investigation into the death of an 18 year old rider who

00:46crashed their e-scooter on the Flinders Highway in Townsville over the weekend.

00:51Now the teen from Mount Louisa was taken to hospital in a critical condition but

00:55sadly passed away a short time later. E-scooters around Queensland have become

01:00more common since 2019. They are very popular and we've seen more and more of

01:05them in those major and capital cities. There is currently a parliamentary

01:09inquiry underway that's looking specifically into the benefits, the safety risks as well

01:15as the approaches to safety and regulation for the mode of transport. There is

01:21expected to be a report that will be tabled on March 30 next year.
