00:00Luis Alberto Lopez and it does appear the skies in fact will stay we will not have it doesn't

00:23earlier in the day but tonight perfect night 25 year old Luis Alberto Lopez has had to learn the
00:32sport on the job he had only a 15 fight amateur career and he won only eight of those tonight
00:39he fights for the second time outside his native Mexico Lopez is a four-year pro he comes off his
00:46best performance of the date and that was in his American debut in February he went in as an underdog
00:51and came out with a victory over Ray Jimenez winning by an eighth round technical decision
00:57that was caused by an accidental headbutt it was the fifth consecutive win for Lopez following his
01:02only loss and that was a 10 round split decision in March of last year Lopez a frenetic fighter
01:08throws odd punches Raul talked about that earlier and he throws them from odd places he's rough he's
01:14physical definitely not looking to make this a classic boxing matchup so Steve take us behind the
01:20numbers with Luis Alberto Lopez I will do that Barry we begin with the win Lopez's only fight here in
01:27the States was his most recent one when he outpointed a pretty good fighter in Jimenez who was 18 and one
01:33the loss Lopez's only defeat against came against Mexicali neighbor Abraham Montoya who was 14 one and
01:40one and that was a split decision so no disgrace there and finally doing the 10 Lopez has had only three
01:46more fights in via but he's a hard 10 round fighter in fact he's already been scheduled for 10 rounds on
01:51four different occasions all right well he's gonna get all he wants tonight there's no question about
01:56it he will get it from a talented young prospect from Salinas California Ruben Fia and here is 22 year old
02:05to Ruben rv4 because he's the fourth Ruben via he was undefeated in his first 15 professional fights
02:12Ruben brought an outstanding amateur career with him to the pro ranks he had 180 fights and he went all
02:18but about 13 it was a 2016 Olympic team alternate he won the National Golden Gloves titles twice in 2014 and
02:252015 he had an amateur wins against the likes of Devin Haney Shakur Stevenson and Gary Antonio Russell
02:32we saw via in his most recent fight of January when he outclassed previously undefeated Ruben
02:39Chavera tonight via steps up to 10 rounds for the first time he's gone eight rounds on four other
02:46occasions he's a left-hander not really a knockout puncher he's quick he's agile very smart fighter

08:07what do you go eight seven or something and allegedly winning seven that's right amateur fights and pro
08:12experience pretty close all the way around but don't forget steve you got to mention besides the
08:17amateur fights that lopez had he mentioned that he had over 2 000 street fights yeah that's right
08:23that you know he tells you he's a tough guy so he said i got a lot of experience 2 000 street
08:29fights if any of them were televised they're all one-rounders
08:44so far though lopez is keeping his lead foot inside of via and i don't think you want to be there do
08:50you all right being very smart uh you talk about yeah lopez yeah but v is doing the smart thing like i
08:55said he's like a confidence keeping his lead foot outside of lopez's left foot right so obviously
09:02you know it puts lopez off balance
09:08you know when i mentioned this in the fighter meetings it's crazy how lopez comes in but look
09:13his chin is always up in the air but he's getting tagged that's a pretty good left hand from via right
09:18there and via said he wasn't going to aim at his chin he was going to aim at his chest
09:22and sooner or later he'll hit the chin but so far he's already hit the chin yeah i think our
09:27impression of the video was a guy that's kind of wise beyond his years for sure he's got great feet

09:38tactician and you know what i'm seeing in this fight he's standing more in his ground you know
09:44he's not moving around too much he's not using the whole ring he's just in the middle of the ring
09:48keep circling around lateral as opposed to backwards yes right took a little right animal to go from
09:53lopez but shook it off nicely there was a good right hand and that got off balance i don't think
10:00he was screwed oh he wasn't but that's what i'm talking about lopez you know just out of nowhere
10:06he throws punches you don't know where they're coming from man via got caught right there i'll tell you

10:25you're on the outside okay he's trying to counter your lead punch when you're jabbing he's coming
10:30right back trying to counter your jab so either double up jab and drop or jab and get farther back
10:36just fade off a little more just throw that range finder jab and step off and counter his counter
10:41here's what ruben via told us he needs to do in this fight
10:46i've seen that he gets really off balance and especially with with my feet speed um
10:51we're gonna you know take advantage of that and his chin is up a lot so we're also going to take
10:56advantage when when we do have to counter and uh even put a little bit more pressure if we have to
11:00take advantage of that which is exactly what he did in the first round yeah he did take it around
11:06barry look at the via's face would you describe him to use a shakespearean
11:10puckish yeah i would actually that's very good he's puckish mickey rooney in the movie
11:16for those who don't remember that's the key that jab see that popping jab of via just popping it
11:30by his face that's a little combination of lopez i mean lopez keeps coming well if you
11:35taught somebody how to box you wouldn't show them lopez no he's reaching but this is this is what he
11:40does and it works for him at least up until this point he's had his moments here that one threw off
11:47one foot yeah just in talking to lopez yesterday i mean this kid is very very confident i think he's
11:56overconfident you know he's coming off a big win in the fight that he wasn't supposed to win against
12:00uh jimenez gray jimenez he's got every reason to feel that way

12:19his uh his stance you know he's off balance he he doesn't know really where he's coming from he's very
12:25uh he's wide wild and awkward and he tends to square up a lot of that has to do with uh
12:30his foot precision which is not right there again a lot of it has to do too with i mean
12:37the guy only had eight to twelve amateur fights you know he doesn't come from a big amateur background
12:41in his shoulder right now but i'll tell you what in this round he's catching via's punches and he's
12:46scoring with his own hey if he doesn't know what he's doing how is via supposed to know what he's
12:53going to do with his own left eye it looked like it right
13:06and you talked about this right at the beginning of the show how tough lopez can be
13:12that's what i was talking about he bombard you with straight shots and he had his chin up in the
13:25air but it works sometimes it works oh not working there and again
13:35i think the two things via needs to do jab a lot punch to the body a lot
13:40or is it going to be very hard things for lopez to defend against with his style
13:56you know what i think pia might have stolen this round in the last minute
14:01well he's very accurate barry yes he doesn't waste any punches yet just about every punch he throws he
14:07he catches him and lopez missed the last

17:56I mean, he's like a poor man version of maybe Ricardo Mayorga or Maromero Pais, Nassim Jameir.

18:58He's right in the center of the ring, just keeps turning the guy, puts him off balance.
19:03And Lopez is very confused and frustrated.
19:07And one thing he does there also, the Floyd Mayweather trick,
19:10he'll use an extended glove as a sort of a lever to push his opponent in a direction
19:15or to push himself in a direction laterally.
19:18That's a really, that's a mature move.
19:20Well, I mean, it's a little early to make that comparison to Floyd Mayweather,
19:24but there are the roots of Floyd Mayweather here.

19:29And as long as we're throwing around big names, Raul mentioned Hamed.
19:32You know, obviously Lopez doesn't touch anywhere near as hard as Hamed.
19:36But Villa's people mentioned the Barrera-Hamed fight as possibly something that would remind us,
19:43this fight might remind us of that fight where Barrera dominated Hamed simply by boxing well
19:48and boxing smartly and boxing technically soundly.
19:52You know, the other thing, too, that strikes me is that he really has a tendency to listen to his corner.
19:58The voice in his corner is Dean Famillon.

20:03And it's only one voice, and it's a calm voice, and there's only one or two things that he says
20:08in the round one, one of which was throw that left hand every now and then,
20:11and he's done that in this round.
20:13Every now and then you see Villa moving to his left hand, left side, which is a pretty good hook.
20:29It's dangerous when he does that because he just gets caught by right hand by Lopez.
20:33That's why it's so important if he just keeps circling to his dead hand.
20:36I think that left hook really got the attention of Lopez.

24:51and he can't get tired because lopez is still throwing punches well do you think lopez will
24:56get tired because he throws such unorthodox wild shots that does that tire you out well i've seen
25:02him and you know when he fought jimenez if you saw he attacked the first four rounds
25:06he was busy i mean he's a guy that for the average featherweight he throws more than like i mentioned
25:1181.3 round he's in great shape but he's not throwing anywhere near 81 tonight i don't think so
25:18because of his opponent because his opponent yeah he's so uh elusive making a miss he's really making
25:25him think he's frustrating it looks like he's trying to bait him in now he did that with a
25:30jimenez yeah attack for four rounds and then he was trying to bait jimenez in but fia's too smart

25:57really only one way for him to try to fight if he wants to win it listen for the bell gentlemen

26:22and uh i think body shots landed kind of jumps out at you there doesn't it i would say so looks
26:29like a football score 24 to nothing for via and again that's not really been a strength of his but
26:36tonight it is and he's power shots lopez 224 to via's 100. if you just saw that stat you might say lopez
26:45must be winning well he's not yeah and you see how awkward lopez is from the beginning when he throws
26:52a lead right hand they'll follow with the left his feet are all mixed up and via took advantage of
27:00that circling ever circling always keeping the right pistons that was a shot that i thought hurt him
27:09they saw that lead left hand to the body by via so he's done some really good body work maybe that will
27:14pay off in the later round you know he always talks about the name of his sport is hit and don't be hit and
27:33that's what he subscribes to he doesn't feel it is mandatory for him to knock anybody out he says he knows
27:40his fans want to see that but that's not who he is not who he is and i think there's room for every
27:46type of fighter in boxing yeah we all love the altura gaddis we all love the power of a dionte wilder
27:51but not everybody fights that way and you can win in more than one way nice little uppercut in close
27:55quarters there yeah and i'll tell you what he's got nothing to be ashamed of so far six rounds and i think
28:00there's been they've been exciting rounds he's showing you know his finesse his smartness uh you know his
28:05angles his speed he sat down in shots i think he rocked lopez a bunch of times lopez is just a tough
28:17guy he's a good shot he is that's why it's a good test for yes for the left hand it was completely
28:26out of position he threw the left hand that's the only chance lopez has he's got a group attacking that
28:42way maybe take three or four shots to give one shot get inside work the body frustrate via hopefully
28:50making empty out his gas tank not happening i think he is his gas tank is more full than lopez
29:02lopez was just pinned on the ropes for a split second and jumped off
29:05it's a good sign it means his legs are still there and the thrill is still there yeah
29:09because he really hasn't been pinned against the ropes for any length of time
29:13at any point in this fight oh look at the jazz solid desert flesh in his face
29:27is it bothering at all that vf fights with his mouth open barry i've given up on that
29:31i know everybody fights with their mouth open it looks like it looks like both of them have their mouth
29:36yes sometimes that's the result of an ill-fitting mouthpiece usually it's not no punch from talking
29:43to a lot of trainers and boxers and it's it's it's not a good idea for obvious reasons
29:56if you don't know what that obvious reason is well if you get hit on the jaw when your mouth is open

30:46finish up top okay the body shots are taking the speed right out of it

31:19the show stats tell us that in round six via landed 24 jabs that's a lot of jabs in one round it is
31:27well they came in here with a game plan he's executed the game plan just about perfectly
31:31and lopez still there still firing you know with prospects you can't help but project and i'm trying
31:41to project what kind of fighter is going to give you the most problems i think it's going to be a
31:44walking guy who can out muscle him yes get close and try to pressure him maybe take away that jab that's
31:51going to be the kind of fighter that might give you problems down the road but it's going to have to be a
31:56very good fight yeah it's going to be interesting really interesting to see him grow i think yeah
32:03to see if he can maintain this style room and got a lot better opposition right let's go
32:08see the jabs last round not only did via land 24 he landed 47 percent of his jabs that's a huge
32:24percentage for jabs huge especially with a guy who's not easy to score with directly yeah because
32:33he moves around so you don't know where he's going to be different angles yeah
32:38i mean he's never been knocked out or stopped right they've been knocked down lopez
32:45two nice little right hands from via

33:07a lot of young fighters at this stage you could they could have lost they could have lost their focus

33:18he is just too smart again i i like his corner you know and i like what's being done in there
33:24it's calm you've talked about that i mean that's what you want as a fighter in the corner yeah you
33:29don't need uh you don't need a lot of people talking you need one one guy talking on the corner but you
33:33the calmer the corner is the better it is for a fighter if you got everybody yelling in there
33:37the fighters gonna be like what's going on you know by the time the bell rings what do i do what they say

40:04we didn't have a big amateur background so it's like a group that's learning on the dot too
40:09over 1100 punches strong combined that's a lot that's idea continues to hammer outscoring about five
40:21to one and right now lopez finally answered but he didn't for a while those body shots may be taking
40:30an effect i think he needs more than bia needs to keep working the body he still has a chance to stop him
40:40a nice winner real really impressive when he stopped him quickly he's still winning impressively but
40:46you always want to see a knocker or a stoppage

40:57from a fan's perspective will be his lack of punching power hurt him in the long run

45:52chalk it up to it's an experiential fight for him he did absolutely everything that he could have set out to do
45:59so it's in the books here and uh i'd have to give b a pretty good grade i would think
46:22yeah you know he's he's going to be consistent with his effort and with his style and until somebody
46:29beats him he's going to box this way circles lateral movement good job and the most impressive
46:35stat there to me in the body shots landed 41 to 7. you would have thought that would have been a much
46:40closer but uh via landing 46 percent of his power shots against 17 for lopez that's a very high
46:48percentage of power shots landed what are moving there you go we take a look at starting the highlights
46:55starting with round five at this point lopez looked like he was tiring and we were a little surprised that
47:01he came on later round six lopez moving away he can't do that against video that's for sure not if
47:12he wants to win any rounds
47:16and lopez did a great job staying off the ropes you see he gets pinned on the ropes here but then
47:20he holds and he gets off the ropes he was never pinned that's probably one of the reasons he went the distance
47:24last couple of rounds lopez sort of got a injection of energy didn't win the ninth but he very well
47:39could have won the tenth
47:44he came on in the second half of the round if you scored it for him that's why
47:49so we'll see how the judges saw this but that would be pretty hard to see it any other way but
47:54with via being a lopsided winner in this fight although in the lopez corner they seem pretty
47:59confident and i can't help but agree with you raul that lopez is a guy that if he found the right
48:08guidance and was willing to accept it he might have a shot yes and you know even with this performance
48:17you know he's going to be looked at uh for another upcoming prospect he's going to get another fight
48:22because uh he's in great shape his game he never let off the gas he was trying the whole time he won
48:28the last round maybe he ran out around maybe he needed more rounds but he's a tough fighter he really is
48:35so lopez doesn't have to hang his head he came he tried and did everything that was within his ability
48:43to do but against the guy who's as good a boxer as ruby via that's just a very tall order tall order
48:49indeed and a natural progression for via to take this fight and do so well a very good win for him
48:55at this point in his career all right let's go to thomas driver we'll hear what the judges had to say

50:12has a style like lopez that you know that's going to make it easier for him to adapt to any other fighter
50:17that that has any kind of style you know two great performances here on showbox i think he's on his way
50:24you know he's still young he's 21 years old so he's still more seasoned to be done yeah i think though
50:31this fight absolutely was a step forward for him oh absolutely you know he what i liked about him in
50:36this fight he stood more in the pocket and if we stopped at the beginning he kept circling the guy
50:42he kept starting the guy he really tried to get the knockout because you know how we talked in the
50:47fighter meetings about his power he only has five knockouts but that's okay you know he's still an
50:52exciting fighter i want to see him again like i said he's young 21 years old he still needs more
50:58seasoning he has to learn more i don't think he's ready for any of the champions out there like
51:02uh carrington i believe his name is uh valdez uh santa cruz or russell but if i see him here
51:10again here on showbox i would like to see him with you know he's like the a plus guy maybe see him with an a
51:15minus guy uh maybe he's three or four fights away from fighting for a world title but he's on his
51:22way he's looking really good i'm very impressed all right let me turn to steve firewood here steve
51:25you just had a chance to look at the scoring are you a bit surprised by it very surprised especially
51:30the 96-94 that's six rounds to four did you find four rounds to give lopez i certainly didn't
51:36i don't think any of us we wanted pretty much from the beginning he's very consistent in his style
51:41maybe that'll work against him with the judges on occasion because if they don't like that style
51:45well then they're going to give the other guys some rounds yeah i mean i thought he did everything
51:48that could have been asked of him to be honest with you tonight and i thought also he took lopez
51:53his best shot he showed a bit of a beard as well and again i talk about the natural progression
51:58from vm what i like about him best is whether he makes it big barry or it doesn't make it big
52:03he's going to fight his way and the fans who want to see arturo gaddy fights every time well
52:08they can be damned because he's not going to fight that way no that's right and he does what he does
52:12extremely well it's not a finished product yet but he's on his way and he's on his way and it's
52:17not going to surprise anybody if he cracks the top 10 within a year and a half all right let's take a
52:22look back on what we saw here in corona california tonight uh we began with sal sanchez real name
52:30saul against brandon leon benitez and benitez had his moments in this fight but sanchez gets the
52:37stoppage sanchez did get the stoppage he's a fighter definitely progressing if i were sanchez's
52:44people i'd have then i'd have him watch ruben villa to learn and before that it was michael der after
52:52that michael dutch over and a late substitute roski crystal ball and roski we hardly knew ye
53:01one left hook to the body and that was the end on a fighter who took the fight on three days notice
53:06very tough situation for crystal ball dutch over national tvw took advantage hardly broke a sweat
53:12as a matter of fact and our main event we've just talked about it ruben villa and luis alberto lopez
53:18lopez came in he tried gave him his best shot via at least the way we saw it dominated well we wondered
53:25how via would handle the unorthodox style of lopez hey a good jab and good foot movement will conquer
