00:00to Oscar De La Hoya. He will have to get in line though. In the meantime tonight though,
00:04IBF junior welterweight champion Kostya Zhu will be busy with Leonardo Moss. He learned to fight on
00:10the rugged streets of the Bronx before refining his skills in the gym and going on to much success
00:16in the ring. He's had his setbacks though. Moss hasn't seen anything like Kostya Zhu. A five foot
00:22six inch stick of dynamite. Zhu learned to fight in his native Russia, continued boxing in the
00:27Soviet army and loved it. He says the nerves on edge feeling before a fight like this
00:33and the adrenaline rush of slugging it out can't be beat. That's exactly what Zhu is feeling
00:37now. So let's go to Jim Lampley, Larry Merchant and George Borman at ringside. All right. There's
00:44a good look at Leonardo Moro Mas. You see the Moro, that's the nickname written there on the
00:50road. Record for Mas. 23 wins, two losses, no draws, 15 KOs. His first appearance ever in
00:57a championship fight. The fighters' records are being brought to you by the ring, the bible of
01:02boxing. And as you know, if you know Spanish, the last name translates to Moro. So the job here for
01:09Kostya Zhu is to find a way to reduce Mas to Menos. Kostantin Zhu from the Ural Mountains of Russia.
01:1918 wins, no losses since he went to Australia and became a professional fighter. 14 knockouts being
01:25showcased now in this country. His big hope for a chance to meet Oscar De La Hoya. But
01:29as Nick Charles said, Zhu will have to get in line for that. And he'll also probably have to chase
01:35De La Hoya up to 147 pounds because that's where Oscar is headed if he wins tonight against Miguel
01:42Angel Gonzalez. Tale of the tape. This battle between Leonardo Mas and Kostya Zhu. And you can see that
01:48Mas is one of those taller junior welterweights. Five feet, ten inches tall.
01:54They both weighed in at 139. And here's the oddity. Although Zhu gives up four inches in height, he has a
02:00three-inch reach advantage. So you got two very different physical styles in there. Rules of the bout with the
02:07inimitable Harold Letterman. The Leonardo Moro Mas' Kostya Zhu fight is scheduled once again for 12 rounds.
02:12There is no standing eight counts. No three-knockdown rule. Only the referee can stop the fight. And he cannot
02:17be saved by the bell at any round, including the 12th and final round. Jim, the fabulous fight judge,
02:23pharmacist, his heraldness. Let's go into the ring to Michael Buffer.
02:26And now, ladies and gentlemen, top rank incorporated along with your undisputed, undefeated King of
02:38beers, Budweiser. This Bud's for you. Present by way of Caesar's Palace World Championship Boxing.
02:4612 rounds of boxing for the IBF Junior Wilterweight Championship of the World.
02:54This bout, of course, is sanctioned by the Nevada State Athletic Commission and the International
02:59Boxing Federation. President Robert W. Lee, IBF supervisor ringside is Robert Weitzel.
03:05The three judges assigned to this bout, scoring on a ten-point system, will be Chuck Jampa,
03:10Bill Graham, and Ray Wheatley. And when the bell rings, the man in charge of the action,
03:17your referee, Joe Cortez. Introducing first, fighting out of the blue corner, wearing black
03:25trimmed with white and red letters. He weighs 139 pounds and brings an outstanding record
03:32of 23 victories. With only two defeats, 15 KOs, he comes to us from Dorado, Puerto Rico,
03:40ladies and gentlemen. Introducing the challenger, Leonardo Moro Ma.
03:52And his opponent, across the ring, fighting out of the red corner. He's wearing black, trimmed
03:58with white, and weighs 139 pounds. A native of Russia, but now living and fighting out of
04:04Sydney, Australia, he brings a perfect record of 18-0, 14 by knockout. Ladies and gentlemen,
04:12presenting the undefeated IBF junior welterweight champion of the world, Kostya Su!
04:22Okay, gentlemen, we went with the rules of the dressing room.
04:36I've already seen the rules of Camerino. I want a good lead fight. Take hand. Go out to
04:43both.
04:43It's a two-year.
04:44Zhu's father is Korean. His mother is Russian. They all live in Australia, and here they are
04:53in Las Vegas. And Ma was raised in the Bronx, moved to Puerto Rico when he was 15, and he
05:03is here in Las Vegas. What a game.
05:05Australian fans have adopted Zhu as their own. They celebrate him wildly down under, but
05:12he says, sure, I love Australia, but I'm a Russian. I'll always be a Russian, and I should
05:17be seen that way.
05:21Left hand shot in close by Zhu as they're hugging against each other, and Leonardo Mas looks at
05:28Joe Cortez and asks for exactly that.
05:31I think Mas did the right thing. You get out there on this guy who's supposedly so tough,
05:37and you attack him and let him know, hey, I'm somebody, too.
05:40Leonardo Mas is a natural South Pole, fights out of conventional stance, just like Oscar
05:45De La Hoya. So just as is the case with De La Hoya, his most effective punch is his left
05:50hook. In fact, of his 15 knockouts, 14 of them came with the left hook, and now it's Zhu who
05:55deposits Mas on the canvas with his own left hook in the first minute of the bout.
06:04It wasn't a damaging punch.
06:06No, it was more of a flash knockdown type punch, but you wonder about Mas' chin if he went down
06:12on that.
06:16Mas has never been in any big events. Zhu has been in all kinds of international
06:21competition as an amateur. He's now a professional champion. He may just be nerves.
06:28You asked him about that earlier in the meeting.
06:34Was he willing to get out there or make some excuses?
06:36Get him out of there.
06:50Mas looking for help from the referee again as he believes that Zhu is fouling him, but
06:56Zhu just wants to throw punches and land.
06:58Yeah, he thinks that Zhu is fouling him by hitting him as they break, but if the referee
07:03isn't there to break them up, it's perfectly okay.
07:05Break out, break out, break out, break out.
07:07Break out, break out, break out.
07:15Break out, break out, let him out, let him out clean.
07:19Kind of a rough first round for Leonardo Mas, who's been down on a relatively soft left hook.
07:24He's been hit twice by punches that he regarded as fouls.
07:28And Kastia Zhu is just saying, come on, let's fight.
07:36Hard right hand by Zhu and Mas grabs and holds.
07:38Well, it's easy to see, George, that for whatever reason, Kastia Zhu is relaxed and ready, and
07:53Leonardo Mas is a little bit overwhelmed.
07:55Yeah, he's sitting there wondering.
07:57He's fouling me.
07:58The next thing you know, he's getting off the canvas each time.
08:01I think Larry mentioned he's kind of nervous out there tonight.
08:06Second knockdown of the first round, no three knockdown rule in effect.
08:13And now Mas goes down a third time at the end of the round.
08:18And I thought what happened there was as the punch went into Mas' eye.
08:24Now the round is finished.
08:26Cortez is making Zhu stay in a neutral corner while he takes a look at Mas.
08:30There's been no penalty so far.
08:32He seems to be concerned.
08:35Maybe that punch was laying at the same time as the bell ringing.
08:48You heard the referee say he was going to give Mas five minutes because he got hit on the break.
08:54And I thought the glove might have creased into Mas' eye.
09:01No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
09:03Meanwhile, Ratner asked, Mark Ratner, who's the chairman of the Nevada State Athletic Commission,
09:07he asked Joe Cortez, the referee said, has the bell rung?
09:10Cortez said, no, the bell had not rung at the point of this.
09:12I think the referee is being a bit too generous this time.
09:27Now he's holding his right jaw as if it's broken or seriously hurt.
09:33He's indicating to the referee.
09:36At this point, it doesn't look like Mas can or wants to go on.
09:39You're right, he doesn't want to fight anymore.
09:42Well, and if this punch broke his jaw, I mean, come on, that's just a little half left hook in there.
09:48He wants out of there and I think that's the reason he was on the canvas in the first year.
09:51And he's asking for the doctor to look at him.
09:56So here comes the doctor to look at Leonardo Mas and
10:00it looks pretty clear that Mas isn't too anxious to continue the fight.
10:04You see him wincing every time the doctor touches him there on the jaw.
10:09You see him wincing every time the man.
10:18Very discouraged, young man.
10:20Perhaps his jaw and certainly his dream shattered here at the end of the first round.
10:26His jaw, he won't continue.
10:27What would a night of the fights be without one of these?
10:36All right, Mark, okay, okay, the doctor's stopping that, so, okay, let me try to tell him.
10:51Now Harold, I have to ask you, this may be called an accidental foul.
10:56What would the ruling be?
10:57It looks as though if Mark Ratner calls it an accidental foul, you don't get a score against the left to six rounds,
11:03so, therefore, it becomes either with no contest or a technical decision, you know, same technical draw rather,
11:08no contest or technical draw, so, therefore, gosh, the zoo retains his title and that's it.
11:13There's no way Mas to win the title.
11:14Now, I think zoo deserves a TKO one here.
11:20He overwhelmed the guy.
11:21He's hitting on the ground, man.
11:21No, no, he's hitting on the ground.
11:23Stop the fight.
11:27The fight is over.
11:28The crowd's going to be upset.
11:29They wanted to see more of Costa Zoo.
11:35You know, we haven't used the bad pun yet, but what is Leonardo saying in there?
11:39No Mas, that's exactly what he's saying.
11:45And I think Mas was no Mas to begin with.
11:48There, you saw a really good, quick, clean, hard left hand, George.
11:56Now we'll look at it in real speed.
11:59This is a short punch that carried a lot of punch in it, George, right there.
12:04And you saw it did happen while the referee was trying to separate them.
12:09Same time, uh, Casca Zoo was not holding.
12:12He was not holding that.
12:17The referee can't say break.
12:19Sometimes you need to get in there.
12:21All right, Mark Ratner explaining things to Harold Letterman.
12:24Now, what did he go with, Harold?
12:25This is going to be called a technical draw because
12:30Zoo hit Mas as the referee was trying to break him, break them.
12:36Thank you, Larry.
12:37All right, let's go up to Michael Buffer first.
12:39So, Mas did get a break for two.
12:41Ladies and gentlemen, your attention, please.
12:43Referee Joe Cortez has called a halt to this bout.
12:46Due to an unintentional, illegal blow, the fighter, the challenger, Leonardo Mas, was unable to continue.
12:55The positions at ringside have determined he has a dislocated jaw.
12:58He is unable to continue.
12:59The blow that caused the damage was an unintentional, illegal blow.
13:04Therefore, the bout under the rules of the Nevada State Athletic Commission is called a technical draw.
13:10The ball.
13:22Boo.
13:24Well, let's go up to Nick Charles.
13:26Here's some point here.
13:28Here's some point.
