00:17In pursuit of that ideal, many brave young men sacrificed themselves on the Luperon, Constanza, Maimon and Estero Hondo expeditions.
00:25Others succumbed to the relentless persecution of the dictatorship's repressive forces, while dozens suffered the scourges of torture and exile.
00:35All dreamed of freeing the country from that yoke and building a welfare state based on the free play of ideas, entrepreneurship and democratic values.
00:43After enduring three decades of fear, silence and an iron fist, a reckless group decided to end that oppression.
00:50From that unthinkable audacity arose the assassination of May 30, 1961.
00:56The historic episode that paved the way for the reconquest of our trampled rights.
01:01Regrettably, 64 years later, when the effort to create and strengthen democratic institutions seemed consolidated,
01:08signs of a serious degeneration of the process are emerging.
01:12The majesty of freedom is beginning to succumb to behaviors that denature it.
01:16The unpunished disrespect for the laws, institutions and authorities that symbolize the rule of law for which past generations fought.
01:24It is shameful, and above all frustrating and disheartening, that the edifice of freedom erected with so much sacrifice is rapidly crumbling.
01:33With corroded moral values, rampant corruption, contempt for human honor and dignity,
01:38in addition to the defiance of the norms of coexistence, we have entered the era of pure debauchery.
01:45An era where defamation, vituperation, lying and even outright murder prevail over the liberating dream that inspired the struggle against tyranny.
01:55It was not for this reason that an entire nation dedicated its efforts to cementing democratic institutions,
02:02guaranteeing citizens' self-initiative and protecting rights such as honor, privacy and freedom of choice.
