00:00We have an update on Steph Diggs, which we'll get to.
00:02Do we really?
00:03Well, it's really more of a Cardi B update.
00:05All right.
00:06Which we'll get to, uh, one o'clock.
00:08Okay.
00:08We'll get back to, uh, all the latest on Steph Diggs.
00:12And it turns out, uh, his girlfriend, we assume.
00:15Yes.
00:15I don't know all the complexities of their relationship.
00:18Seems like they are an official item.
00:19The story I'm looking at refers to him as her beau.
00:23Okay.
00:23B-E-A-U.
00:24Was it a French story?
00:25It is from the Daily Mail.
00:27Okay.
00:27Uh, so we...
00:28Don't, don't shoot the messenger on this one, Keith.
00:31Well, I think we can...
00:32We have an update.
00:33We have an update coming your way.
00:34All right.
00:34Good.
00:34At one o'clock.
00:35Uh, in the meantime, that was Phil Perry describing the day at OTAs yesterday.
00:40It was a quote-unquote uneven performance for the offense.
00:43That, that is progress.
00:44I mean, it's, that's way better than four picks.
00:46Even I'll acknowledge that.
00:48I still don't love what I'm reading about the offense.
00:50Now, it's early.
00:52It's a brand new offense.
00:53Drake May hasn't played for Josh McDaniels.
00:56They don't have a party boy there.
00:58Steph Diggs out on the field yet.
00:59He wasn't even present for OTAs.
01:01So, I understand it could look a lot better, but let's evaluate what we've seen.
01:05Media's been there for two of these passing camps, OTAs, the last couple of weeks.
01:09He threw four picks last week.
01:11Yesterday, he was nine for 17.
01:13Offense was, again, quote-unquote uneven.
01:15He had a fumbled snap.
01:17I think it's way too early to panic, but I think it's fair to say the offense doesn't sound like it's doing great so far.
01:22Uh, no, it doesn't.
01:23And, you know, like Mike Rabel even himself said, you know, all this stuff matters.
01:28He takes into account performance.
01:29Like, you wouldn't be out there if it didn't matter.
01:31If it was like, oh, just when the game starts, that's what it is.
01:34I think especially when you have a group that is so new and you have a new offense and a new offensive coordinator for all these guys, every little bit counts.
01:44And, yeah, it's May, like, you know, these notepads, like, it's way different than what it's going to be come August and then, you know, once you get into the regular season, for sure.
01:54But every little bit, you're like, all right, you got to start somewhere.
01:56And so as long as you're showing, like, a little bit of improvement, I guess you could take that as, like, a positive sign.
02:01But, yeah, no, there's a lot of, like, unknown when it comes to this offense of what it's going to look like.
02:06You can assume that Drake May is going to take a big step forward because you're like, oh, it looks like a more competent offense.
02:12There's no guarantee of it, though.
02:13You think Vrabel wants to put a lot on May?
02:15I know we're kind of reading between the lines with things that he said.
02:18I'm with you, though.
02:19That's not how they ran their offense in Tennessee.
02:20At his introductory press conference, he talked about, like, you know, teams that are efficient running the football and stuff like this.
02:27And we really got to disrupt opposing QBs, rather.
02:32And you got to be efficient in the passing game.
02:35You got to supplement that with the run.
02:37Like, I don't get the sense he wants to put a lot on Drake May.
02:40I really don't think so either.
02:42I think in a perfect world, they're running the ball really well, and they are a good defense.
02:50And they don't have Derrick Henry, but, you know, I think they still have backs.
02:55Like, he was talking up Ramondra Stevenson the other day.
02:57Stevenson, by the way, was there yesterday.
02:59Yeah, so he's back.
03:01But, yeah, I think he wants to – because he even said early on, now, it wasn't some of the cliche stuff where you roll your eyes.
03:07We're going to play smash-mouth football and punch in the snout.
03:09Like, it wasn't that, but it was –
03:11It was trending towards them.
03:12It was more that than not.
03:13It was like, you know, if you can have, like, 20, 25 good passes in a game as opposed to, like –
03:19I don't think they're going to, like, let him rip.
03:22Now, it's still modern NFL.
03:23You can't win throwing for under, like, 200 yards a game.
03:28And Vrabel knows that.
03:29Like, Vrabel's best seasons, they had A.J. Brown.
03:30And A.J. Brown had a great year – or a great couple of years with those guys.
03:35But, yeah, overall, I think the – now, he also had a bunch of different offensive coordinators in Tennessee.
03:40Oh, his lady.
03:40Basically four different guys.
03:41I think he had four in six years.
03:43So, basically, it changed every year or at the most every other year.
03:46Yeah.
03:46So, now you have McDaniels, and you look back at his track record, and, you know, a lot of it's with Brady.
03:51But then there's plenty of years with other quarterbacks, too.
03:54And so, what he likes to do as well – but I would say, overall, Vrabel's going to be more conservative than maybe we would want him to be, or maybe more than Drake May would want to be.
04:04And the first month of the year – not to jump the gun on the Diggs conversation, which we'll circle back to, but the first month of the year, I'm not anticipating Diggs being out there much.
04:11I mean, Kendrick Bourne had a similar injury at a similar time.
04:14Bourne's younger, by the way.
04:16Not as good of a receiver as Diggs in his prime, obviously.
04:20But Bourne didn't come back until, I think it was October 6th.
04:24So, I bet Diggs will be back for the Buffalo game week five.
04:26Maybe he's even back week four.
04:28But I think – and if I'm wrong, I'm wrong.
04:30But I thought this from even before they signed him.
04:33I don't think he's going to be ready week one.
04:35And so, that might be the kind of thing that grows and evolves over the course of the year, Keith.
04:38Like, what we see week one against the Raiders might be very different than what we see in December.
04:44But they may not have the opportunity to really put a lot on Drake May if it's really, for all intents and purposes, basically the same wide receiver room as a year ago.
04:52I mean, before Diggs gets out there, we're still looking at Pop Douglas and Kendrick Bourne and maybe Kayshaun Booty.
05:00Who knows how much we're going to see out of Kyle Williams early in the year.
05:03Matt Collins, I imagine, has a role.
05:05But what is that?
05:05A three or four receiver?
05:07I mean, you might be relying largely on the same guys in the passing game to start the year if Diggs isn't ready to go.
05:12So, last year, only six guys threw for 4,000 or more yards.
05:17So, like, I don't think Drake May is going to be 4,000 yards passing.
05:20Who were they, just out of curiosity?
05:21Joe Burrow threw for almost five.
05:23Then Goff, my guy Baker Mayfield, Geno Smith, Sam Darnold, and Lamar Jackson.
05:30Okay, so there is more of an avenue into that club than I would assume.
05:33But I would guess he's out of that group, yeah.
05:36The next group down is Mahomes, Rogers, Herbert.
05:38So, it was like, all right, because the Chargers might actually be a good comparison.
05:44We're like, they have the guy who can do it.
05:46I think they're a great comparison.
05:47And, like, Herbert didn't throw any picks last year.
05:50Individually, it's a great comp, I think, for May.
05:52Probably, he's closer to Herbert, probably, than Josh Allen.
05:55Herbert's way more athletic, sneaky athletic, than I think a lot of people realize.
05:59He's like a truck.
05:59Right.
06:00Josh Allen hits you over the head with it, with you, with his athleticism.
06:03But Herbert's very athletic.
06:05And the coaches, to me, are very similar.
06:07First year, a year ago, with Harbaugh and Herbert.
06:09This year, first year with Vrabel and May.
06:13And Harbaugh wants to run the ball.
06:14But they evolved over the course of the year and threw it way more in the second half of the year.
06:17So, that is a really good analogy.
06:18It is amazing.
06:19I mean, the two high-end comps for Drake May coming out were Josh Allen and Justin Herbert.
06:24Justin Herbert averaged 227.6 yards a game passing.
06:29227?
06:29Doesn't seem like much.
06:30Josh Allen, in an MVP season, averaged 219.5.
06:34So, like, 220, when you think about modern-day NFL, you're like, 220 passing yards is, like, not a crazy number.
06:40Now, those guys can also run.
06:42And in the case of Herbert, he only threw three picks.
06:44Josh Allen, I think, only threw six.
06:46So, you got to keep that.
06:47If you're not going to throw it a lot, you can't throw any picks.
06:50But maybe that would be more – I think you'd be more inclined to see that, where if Drake May throws for 220, 225 in a game, one touchdown or two touchdowns, no picks, and then they run the ball well, I think Vrabel will sign up for that 100 times.
07:061,000%.
07:07Rather than, oh, we got to get into a shootout.
07:10Shootout with what?
07:11Kyle Williams and, like, Kendrick Bourne?
07:13Like, I don't know if you're equipped to do that.
07:15I don't think it's Javon Baker and Jalen Polk.
07:19Because I think that was one of the issues with Allen last year, honestly, was, like, he didn't have Steph Diggs.
07:23Yep.
07:23Nobody else really stepped up.
07:25So, he had to run.
07:25He had to put a lot of the offense on himself.
07:27They had a good running game overall.
07:29But, like, how was he going to get to 300 yards every week with the guys that he has?
07:33So, as great as he has MVP season, you don't need to throw it like that.
07:36No.
07:37And he didn't have the personnel to do it, which is similar here.
07:41I mentioned Baker.
07:42Just to bring this up again, Mike Vrabel walked off the field yesterday with Javon Baker after practice
07:47and continued to coach him based on one play, which is a novel concept to me.
07:51I'm reading from Mike Reese.
07:52Like, oh, the coach is actually coaching these guys.
07:54Sweet.
07:55I don't feel like, not to pile on Mayo, but I don't feel like there was a lot of that going on last year.
08:00What happened is Baker caught a deep pass and appeared, in Reese's words, to push off on the defender.
08:05Got it.
08:05So, offensive pass interference.
08:07But he did actually catch one, which we should give him credit for, Keith.
08:09I like that.
08:09Because I saw the video from Freeze Pops yesterday.
08:11We ran it earlier on Twitch.
08:13Yeah, you didn't catch it.
08:13Where him and Polk were the first two through the line.
08:15Drop, drop.
08:16Tough start.
08:16They're not with defenders on them.
08:18No.
08:19Or even equipment on them.
08:20They're just wearing helmets.
08:21Blocking.
08:22What were those?
08:23Blocking.
08:23Not sled.
08:24Like dummies?
08:24Yeah, exactly.
08:25Blocking dummies.
08:26So, he caught a pass.
08:27He did appear to push off, and then he celebrated afterwards.
08:30I wonder what he did.
08:31Probably because he was shocked he caught one.
08:32Gritty?
08:33Yeah, probably hit him with the gritty.
08:34An homage to Mac.
08:35Or he did, like, a big fake, like, snort.
08:37Like a big, like, snort.
08:38Oh, one of the soccer players do sometimes?
08:41Yeah, yeah.
08:42They're like, not now.
08:43Too soon.
08:43They're outlying.
08:44After the dig stuff.
08:45Thanks, John Morant.
08:45They're outlawing all the cool celebrations.
08:47Yeah, so maybe not a gun stuff.
08:48No, no, no.
08:50Vrabel wanted him back in the huddle quickly, and he let him know that in decisive terms.
08:53So, he yelled at him in real time.
08:54He's like, get back over here.
08:55Yeah.
08:55And then he still was coaching him coming off the field.
08:58I don't see how Baker, even if Diggs isn't ready.
09:00We went through this earlier.
09:01I don't see how Baker or Polk are on the team.
09:04Baker does not really have much of an avenue, I don't think, to make the team outside of Diggs
09:10starts the year on Pop, and maybe somebody else gets hurt.
09:12Like, not to go down that road.
09:13Fine.
09:13But that's what it would be.
09:15Another injury beyond Diggs, maybe.
09:16But if Diggs is out, then Booty's probably on the team.
09:18Just to paint the picture again, Javon Baker, in all likelihood, committed offensive pass
09:25interference, taunting, and delay a game.
09:28All in one play.
09:29All in one rip.
09:30Yeah, but they can only get you for one.
09:31They can throw a bunch of flags, but they can only get you for one.
09:34They're all offsetting.
09:35Yeah, yeah, yeah.
09:3515 yards from the previous spot.
09:36That's still first down.
09:38Yeah, that's a tough go.
09:39But yeah, it is a numbers game, and it's funny, because the last two weeks in a row,
09:42we've played the Mike Vrabel quick Q&A that he's done at practice, and two different reporters
09:49asked him about the crowded receiver room, which I get Vrabel's response.
09:53He's like, every team in the league has 90 guys.
09:55Everything's crowded.
09:56Everybody's got 10, 12 guys in the room, but that was his way of being like, the room
10:00kind of sucks.
10:00The room does kind of stink, but yeah, it is a numbers game.
10:03Polk got opportunities last year and could not capitalize, and then Baker just didn't.
10:09And Wolf drafted both those guys.
10:12Vrabel has no commitment to either one.
10:15So he could say, all right, let's get rid of both these guys, or maybe he likes one more
10:18than the other.
10:19We'll see, because I think this, in a weird way, could be good for Baker.
10:22Baker, so he got one-on-one attention from the coach.
10:26Yep.
10:27How does he respond?
10:28If he comes out and has a bunch of good practices, maybe Vrabel's like, this guy actually listened
10:32to me.
10:32I got something out of him, right.
10:33If he doesn't, then I'm like, see you later.
10:35Celebrating, and then dropping passes.
10:36I specifically told you not to do that.
10:38You said this earlier, I think Baker's got a better chance of making the team than Polk.
10:42I know Polk has the higher draft capital.
10:43More of an unknown.
10:44But Polk was so bad last year.
10:46Oh, he's stuck.
10:47Baker at least has the upside of, we really don't know.
10:49Bad sign he couldn't get on the field.
10:50Yeah.
10:51But we really don't know.
10:52All right, we got an update on the Steph Diggs situation.
10:55What's going on there?
10:56Doesn't sound like Cardi B is thrilled with her man.
10:58Well, but she was there.
11:00I don't want to start any rumors, but, you know, maybe former man.
11:02You're a rumor monger.
11:03I don't want a rumor monger, but just, you know, maybe former man.
