00:00The Patriots have another signing, cornerback, Carlton Davis, three years, $60 million.

00:09Now this is another guy that they have connection to, Terrence Williams, the D coordinator coached

00:15him last year in Detroit.

00:17How much did he play last year?

00:18He got hurt at one point last year, but I think it was late.

00:21I think he mostly played last year.

00:22Yeah.

00:2313 games.

00:26So he was in Tampa for the whole run.

00:27He played Tom Brady's Superbowl with the Bucs.

00:30Last year was his first year in Detroit, played in 13 games and have a couple of picks.

00:36And so what do we got, 28 years old, former second round pick out of Auburn, Carlton Davis.

00:44So they are beefing up the defense.

00:45Well, I was going to say, there's a thing, somebody at every level on defense.

00:48He checked in at number 19 on Florio's list.

00:50So if you want to be fair, that's a top 20 free agent they've signed.

00:53They had to spend money on it.

00:54Spillane was 66.

00:55Landry wasn't on there.

00:56That's suspicious.

00:58So you had 20 and a half million?

00:59No, it was a one and a half signings of 20 plus million.

01:09Look, all these guys feel like nice signings.

01:11And Carlton Davis could be a really good pair across from Christian Gonzalez.

01:15But there is a definite, definite, definite theme.

01:19It is all defense, three different levels of the defense.

01:21And they're all people with connections to Vrabel and Terrence Williams, which maybe is

01:25a bonus.

01:27Beauty's in the eye of the beholder.

01:28Is it your familiarity with these players or are they falling in love with players they

01:32have an attachment to?

01:34You can see that one either way.

01:36But Carlton Davis, that's my favorite signing out of the three so far.

01:39That's a good signing.

01:41I mean, it's the most money out of the three guys.

01:44But I mean, you are kind of beefing up every level of it, right?

01:46You have a guy who is a pass rusher, although I know people are saying the pass rush isn't

01:50what it was in years past.

02:08So Harold Landry, who had nine and a half sacks last year, obviously played for Vrabel

02:11in Tennessee.

02:12So you have one guy that's a pass rush.

02:13You get Spillane.

02:14So you have like your somebody has to clean up the tackle.

02:18Somebody has to play middle linebacker, have 150 tackles or so.

02:21And now another corner.

02:22And what I like about Carlton Davis, too, is adding him as not a number one corner like

02:27other teams around the league might have been interested in being like, are you going to

02:29be the number one corner?

02:30But if he's playing on the other side of Gonzo, that's pretty good.

02:33So yeah, they haven't done anything offensively yet.

02:36That's still is glaring needs across the board.

02:39Yep.

02:40But one at a time.

02:41These are these are solid, right?

02:42Like nothing's going to blow your hair back, but these are solid signings thus far.

02:45I think they're all solid and good.

02:46Twenty million on Carlton Davis.

02:48Good signing corner for a long time for the Bucs.

02:52He has never played 16 games of the season.

02:54If I'm looking at it properly, 13, 14, 14, 10, 13, 12, 13 last year.

02:58So I got to dig in deeper on how much of a concern injuries are with him.

03:02I know he did not play in the postseason for Detroit last year when their their defense

03:06fell off a cliff.

03:07But, OK, I like that.

03:08I like that signing.

03:09I'm OK with Landry and Spillane.

03:11None of them are going to blow your hair back and none of them are on offense.

03:23Week 15, when they played the Bills, he suffered a fractured jaw, inspected the sideline for

03:44Does signing Carlton Davis, does that change your opinion at all about what the Patriots

03:47do at four?

03:48Oh, good question.

03:50I would still take Travis Hunter.

03:51I think you can use as many good corners as you can get in the NFL just like you can use

03:54as many good wide receivers as you can get.

03:56So if he's still there, I would take Travis Hunter.

03:59And then maybe kind of figure out how to use them.

04:03Both sides.

04:04You know, I get into an argument with Wiggy every day about this.

04:06Wiggy doesn't think he can play both sides at all.

04:08He thinks he's just one.

04:09He thinks he's just a corner.

04:10I'm like, well, then if that's the case, I wouldn't take him at four.

04:14I would try to find a way to play him now.

04:17Wiggy doesn't get 115 snaps a game or whatever, like you got a Colorado, but I would still

04:22I would still take him.

04:23Would you not draft a corner now or Hunter specifically?

04:25No.

04:26In fact, now I would wonder if they do draft Hunter at four, if they're planning on playing

04:29him at receiver like that, like that's what I would wonder.

04:31But no, either way, I would take Travis Hunter at four.

04:34You can play three.

04:35In fact, how many times do you play three corners?

04:37Like more often than not in the NFL?

04:39Yeah.

05:05And what I would say too, is who'd you want them to sign that moved like on offense right

05:14So Devante Adams is a good one.

05:15I wanted them to trade for DK Metcalf too.

05:17So it's fair to beat them up.

05:18Godwin didn't move.

05:19Ronnie Stanley didn't move.

05:21Maybe you wanted Dan Moore and Jalen Moore.

05:22Those might need to be on the list as well.

05:24So maybe you can be a little bit more critical, but look, I want help on offense.

05:28I definitely want help on offense.

05:29Most of the guys that I wanted, uh, didn't move.

05:32I mean, I thought Ronnie Stanley was going to be available in free agency and they can

05:35throw the bag at him.

05:36He didn't move.

05:37And so I don't love any of these left tackle options.

05:39I'd pay Dan Moore or Jalen Moore, or I guess Cam Robinson.

05:43I don't feel great about any of them.

05:45And so the Patriots made some solid signings on defense, still nothing on offense to this

05:48point.

05:49Real quick.

05:50Uh, if you care, the, uh, $60 million contract for Carlton Davis, 34 and a half is guaranteed.

05:57I mean, for whatever that's worth.

06:07One item here from Phil Perry on Harold Landry, uh, he says, uh, the move of signing Harold

06:14Landry surprise sources in Tennessee, Landry played at a weight significantly lighter than

06:18he was listed at of two 52 a year ago.

06:21And his effort was perceived as inconsistent advanced stats, paint two different pictures

06:25of Landry.

06:26He'll turn 29 in June per next gen stats.

06:28He had the fastest pass rush get off.

06:30Nice.

06:31Nice.

06:32Among offensive off outside linebackers rather in 2024, he also recorded the fifth highest

06:36run defense grade among edge defenders a season ago.

06:39But in terms of Landry's pass rush productivity, PFS formula, uh, he ranked 81st out of 93

06:45pass rushers.

06:46That's a stat we had seen going around last night.

06:48Uh, the Patriots 12 guys on the pads last year, Patriots clearly hope they're getting

06:53a better version of Landry than the one the Titans got a year ago.

06:57All right.

06:58So there's bounce back and Phil has before, and he's talked to people in Tennessee.

07:02He, before they signed Landry said it.

07:06Rainbow might not have been the biggest fan of his while they were together in, in Tennessee.

07:09So the fact that I was full of crap, the fact they've signed him would, would lead you to

07:12believe that he's obviously okay with him.

07:14Yeah.

07:15Or maybe it's just the best of what they could get left over.

07:17But Harold Landry yesterday, Robert Spillane and Carlton Davis.
