A married couple, aged 47 and 49, pleaded not guilty at the Balik Pulau Sessions Court on Tuesday (May 27) to a charge of abusing their 12-year-old daughter.

According to police, the victim was caned and locked up in a dog cage for every little mistake she made.

00:00A married couple has pleaded not guilty to abusing their 12-year-old daughter.
00:06The 47-year-old husband and his 49-year-old wife jointly claimed trial to the charge
00:11before Sessions Judge Azal Fariz Ahmad Khairuddin in Balik Pulau on Tuesday.
00:17They were accused of abusing the girl, causing her physical injury at their residence in Bayan Lepas
00:22at 7.30am on May 18th. According to police, the victim was caned and locked up in a dog
00:29cage for every little mistake she made. The charge was framed under Section 31, Subsection 1A
00:36of the Child Act 2001, which carries a fine not exceeding 50,000 ringgit or a jail term
00:43of up to 20 years, or both, upon conviction. Deputy Public Prosecutor Lim Jin Hong requested
00:51bail of 20,000 ringgit for each accused with additional conditions. Lawyer V. Parthipan,
00:57who represented the couple, requested for lower bail as his clients may lose their jobs
01:02if they fail to report back to work after their remand. The husband is a factory supervisor,
01:08earning 5,500 ringgit monthly, while his wife is a project manager at a factory,
01:15drawing 7,000 ringgit a month. Parthipan said despite their high income, the husband still has
01:21to support his mother and another child aged 15, as well as repay car and housing loans. He added
01:27that the wife just had initial surgery for ovarian cancer and needs follow-up treatment at a private
01:33hospital. Judge Azal set bail at 10,000 ringgit with one surety each and ordered both accused to
01:40report to the nearest police station every month pending disposal of the case. The couple was also
01:46ordered to not disturb the victim and to surrender their passports. Case mention was fixed on July 1.
