00:00French President Emmanuel Macron began his Southeast Asia tour in Hanoi on Monday, calling
00:05for a world order based on law.
00:09Macron met with Vietnamese President Luong Kong, stressing the need for a rules-based
00:13system amid growing global tensions.
00:17France and Vietnam signed a number of major agreements, including the acquisition of 20
00:22Airbus aircraft by Vietnam as well as cooperation on nuclear energy, rail, satellites, and
00:27vaccines.
00:31The visit comes days after US President Donald Trump threatened steep tariffs on European
00:35goods, raising concerns for both Vietnam and the EU.
00:40Vietnam, heavily reliant on exports, is pressured by Washington to buy more American products,
00:46while European officials warn against deals that could harm EU interests.
00:53Macron reaffirmed France's support for freedom of navigation in the South China Sea, a key
00:57issue for Vietnam's disputes with Beijing.
01:02Both leaders announced plans to strengthen defense ties with information sharing, cybersecurity,
01:07and anti-terrorism agreements.
01:09France's relationship with Vietnam, once its colony, has grown closer in recent years.
