Max Fried on his outing in Denver
Transcript
00:00When did you develop that pickoff and how did it get so good?
00:02Did you have that in high school or did someone teach it?
00:05High school.
00:06So, you know, just being able to read runners.
00:10And it was just more of trying a lot in high school and a lot of trial and error
00:16and been able to kind of, you know, fine-tune it and make it a lot better in pro ball.
00:22Surprised at times that guys just don't stay on the base considering you pick so many off?
00:26You know, there's times where, you know, guys have a good read on it.
00:31And, you know, right now I feel like I'm in a good groove.
00:34It's the second time that you've gone into the eighth inning here and allowed no runs or one run.
00:38Is there something about this place that obviously it's a tough place to pitch for most people
00:43but it doesn't seem like it at the base?
00:48I don't know if I have a specific answer for you on that.
00:50Just more, you know, that the elements are different.
00:54And for me it's more about making pitches and making sure that you're executing those pitches
00:59because, you know, the ones that hang and the ones that are left over the plate really can beat you.
01:04So it's just more about making sure you're staying on top of it and simplifying.
01:10And just honestly I think execution is the most important.
01:14What did you do in the top of the fifth, the long inning?
01:17A mix of throwing some weighted balls underneath and just trying to keep the heart rate up.
01:26As soon as that inning ended I tried to go out there as quick as possible, get a little run in
01:31and then just try to throw as many balls as I could to just try to, you know, get the arm warm
01:36just because the long half inning everything can tighten up or whatever it is.
01:40So I just wanted to stay on top of it.
01:417-0, 1.290 or 8-11 starts, two or a few every outing.
01:46What are you most happy about this start to the season for yourself?
01:53We're in a good position to win games.
01:56And, you know, that's all I can really control.
01:58Everything else is, you know, it's nice.
02:00But for me when I take the ball I really just want us to win.
02:04So that's been my main goal.
02:05The count was low there in that, you know, on the lower side there in that eighth inning.
02:08Did you try to talk Aaron Boone out of taking you out and letting you go the distance at all?
02:12Yeah, I tried.
02:13But he, you know, he made some good points of there were some long innings
02:16and some pitching changes and stuff like that.
02:18And, you know, we have a long season.
02:21So not trying to get too narrow focus on today at that point
02:26and understood the reasoning and I respected it.
