PH, China release footage of water cannon incident on disputed reef

China and the Philippines release separate videos of the incident near the disputed Sandy Cay reef in the South China Sea on May 21, 2025. Footage released by the Philippines Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) on May 23, 2025 shows what it says is a China Coast Guard (CCG) ship firing its water cannon at a government vessel collecting sand for research near the disputed Sandy Cay reef. In its version of the incident, the CCG releases footage of its actions, claiming that it was the Philippine ship that infringed on Chinese territory without approval from its government.
