Philippines, US test air defenses during war games  US and Filipino forces conduct their first integrated defense drills in the northern Philippines, hours after China said it had seized control of a reef claimed by Manila.  In coastal Zambales province, hours north of the capital Manila, US Marine Corp's new MADIS short-range air defense system knocked drones from the sky. 01:47I just want to say thank you to the people of the Philippines and to the armed forces

01:51of the Philippines for being such gracious hosts and giving us the opportunity to train

01:55shoulder to shoulder with them.

01:56This type of training is absolutely invaluable to us to be able to get out here to operate

02:00with our treaty ally and to be able to set up a defense like this and integrate all of

02:04our systems is just remarkable and we're really grateful for the opportunity.

02:08Today we're defending the coastline here.

02:10Again, F-850s flew out simulating cruise missiles, so the frigate engaged the cruise missiles.

02:17They turned around and started coming towards the shoreline, which Spider then integrated.

02:23And then we started flying drones against Mattis in defense of Spider.

02:29So as both the Marine Corps and the Armed Forces of the Philippines seek to modernize for peer

02:34competition, there's absolutely a complementary approach to this.

02:38So Mattis is short-range, Spider is more of a medium-range capability.

02:43They both engage different threats and the more we work together, they only seek to enhance

02:47our collective lethality.

02:49This is the first time we've used Mattis, so my formation was the first unit in the Marine

02:55Corps to receive Mattis.

02:56We just received it in December of last year and we rapidly transitioned to get it out here
