Candidates for legislative and regional positions in Venezuela are closing their
00:17
campaigns ahead of the polls of next Sunday May 25th. Panamanian workers will
00:25
hold the caravan to condemn the aggressions toward the sectors supporting
00:29
the indefinite strike in defense of sovereignty and the International
00:36
Committee of the Red Cross warned that the humanitarian situation in Gaza is on
00:40
the verge of total collapse due to Israel's aid blockade. Hello and welcome to
00:49
From the South, I'm Alejandra Garcia from Telesur Studios in Havana, Cuba. We begin
00:53
with the news.
01:03
On Thursday candidates for legislative and regional positions in Venezuela are closing
01:10
their campaigns ahead of the polls of next Sunday May 25th. After several weeks of
01:16
traveling all over the country, the candidates for deputies to the National
01:20
Assembly, Governorships and Legislative Councils held the closing arcs of their
01:25
campaign calling on the support of voters. There are 6,500 candidates running on
01:31
Sunday's polls, most of them women and young people. They represent 54 political
01:36
organizations ranging from the ruling coalition, the Great Patriotic Poll, to
01:41
candidates from opposition parties. In this context, on a special interview for Telesur, the Venezuelan
01:50
candidate for the governorship of the Táchira state, Freddy Bernal, detailed that his work
01:55
will focus on improving the agricultural viability of the state in the coming years.
02:00
Let's make an effort in agricultural viability because we produce 40% of vegetables and legumes.
02:07
Moreover, this is the state, and I sometimes say I am not the state to tell it rains or not,
02:12
thus when it rains, it rains heavily. Then I have many problems of agricultural viability
02:18
because streams and rivers grow and farmers need an agricultural viability to be able to
02:23
get the products out. The Government of Venezuela activated the Obratón throughout the national
02:31
territory with the objective of carrying out 130 works in 130 days and responding to the
02:38
needs of the communities. The initiative is part of the policy of priority investment in
02:43
strategic projects in social areas, such as the strengthening of health units with medical
02:48
equipment and medical equipment and medicines. It also seeks the remodeling of educational
02:53
centers and cultural spaces, the integral rehabilitation of the country's main road arteries,
02:59
among other projects of interest. In this context, the President of Venezuela,
03:03
Nicolás Maduro toured the recovered and rehabilitated areas of the Eastern Maternal
03:09
and Children's Hospital Dr. Joel Valencia Parparsén and reaffirmed the commitment
03:15
with the warranty of the right to health.
03:34
In Peru, an exclusive ceremonial sanctuary for the elite is found in Caral, the oldest civilization
03:40
in the Americas that once bloomed in north of modern Lima. It is a fire altar,
03:45
with an antiquity of about 4,000 years, built on the west side of a pyramidal public upper
03:52
building. Archaeologists stated private ceremonies had been held there where members of the elite
03:58
used to burn offerings such as bits, fragmenters of quartz, fish, mollusk and agricultural products.
04:06
The altar was found by the team of investigators of the archaeological zone Caral that leads the Peruvian
04:12
archaeologist Ruth Shady in the sector called Era de Pando.
04:21
Colombia celebrated Afro-Colombian Day with various cultural activities in several cities to pay tribute
04:26
to the African heritage in the country. As part of the celebrations in Bogota, libraries and cultural
04:33
spaces hosted talks, theater exhibitions and concerts by Afro-Colombian groups.
04:39
In Cali, the major's office extended its invitation to citizens to participate in an agenda that promotes
04:45
Afro-descendant rights and heritage. While Barranquilla was the scene of the Negro Somos discussion
04:51
at the Carnival Museum reflecting on cultural identity. And in Cartagena de Indias, the Afro-Caribe
04:59
Fest 2025 was held with a focus on music, dance and ancestral knowledge.

05:31
Welcome back to From the South. The Panamanian indefinite strike of the unions intensifies in
05:36
different regions nationwide in rejection of Law 462 of the Social Security Fund amid complaints of
05:43
raids on union headquarters and growing repression against demonstrators. The leadership of workers
05:49
denounced that police officers with their faces covered and rifles in hand stormed their headquarters
05:56
in San Miguelito in Panama City. Likewise, some trucks legal representatives described the action
06:02
as a government measure to intimidate their clients. They further indicated that the order seeks to capture
06:08
information related to the investigation of another leader of the union. Moreover, workers
06:13
claim that the cancellation of the accounts of their cooperative was a persecution by the
06:19
executive and had no legal basis, just aimed at stopping protests and the indefinite strike.
06:30
Young workers will hold the caravan to condemn the aggressions toward the sector supporting the
06:35
indefinite strike in defense of sovereignty. The caravan will set off from Saita village in the
06:41
outskirts of Panama City on Friday, May 23rd. Marchers will be rejecting the deal signed by the Molina
06:48
administration and Washington under the pretext of warranting the security of the Panama Canal.
06:53
In this context, diverse social organizations will intensify mobilizations in defense of democracy.
07:00
They indicated that the demonstration is part of the plan of actions to stand against the political
07:06
persecution of unions, such as the construction soundtracks union, the arrest of leaders, the closing
07:12
of a cooperative and the search of their properties.
07:20
Hundreds of residents and miners marched on Wednesday in Trujillo to demand greater security in one of Peru's
07:25
most crime-ridden cities. The peaceful protests took place 16 days after the murder of 13 workers at the gold mine in Patas.
07:34
Some miners marched with white helmets as a badge and carried signs reading no more death, no to delinquency,
07:42
no to extortion. Certain workers linked to the Poderosa mine, one of the big mining companies in Peru,
07:48
were found dead on May 4th in a gold mine shaft. Patas was declared in a state of emergency since February
07:56
2024 due to the escalation of violence linked to gold mining.
08:04
In Argentina, teachers organized in the National Historical Federation of University Teachers Iconadu
08:09
set for this week a 48-hour national strike to demand the reopening of bargaining negotiations
08:16
and a salary increase. Meanwhile, the students will march on Thursday. This measure motivated the
08:21
non-teaching staff to make the same measure but for 24 hours for this Friday. The students of the
08:28
University of Buenos Aires are preparing for a mobilization of support that will take place this
08:34
Thursday from House A Square to the National Secretariat of Education. The classrooms where the
08:40
country's future professionals are trained mobilized with the firm decision to continue with the measures of
08:45
struggle that had already began last year against the first budget cuts.
08:55
In Argentina, police officers repressed with excessive force. The march held every Wednesday by hundreds of
09:01
retirees in front of the Congress, leaving almost 100 injured and four arrested. The security forces
09:08
launched deer gas and hit the demonstrators with dumpers at different times in the afternoon,
09:14
while protesters were cordoning off the streets by a picket line. In this context, the police applied
09:19
the anti-riot protocol with an excessive operation that hampered the peaceful rally to develop.
09:31
In Mexico, friends and militants of the Morena party paid tribute to the government cabinet
09:36
collaborators assassinated in an attack. On Tuesday morning, May 20th, Jimena Guzman, who was the
09:42
private secretary of Mexico City's major, Clara Brugada, and advisor Jose Muñoz, were shot dead on one of the
09:49
city's crowded avenues. Witnesses saw how the shooter aimed his gun at the windshield of the vehicle in
09:56
which they were traveling, and then he fled on a motorbike. This crime has dispelled the idea that Mexico City was a
10:04
safe place, generating terror and hopelessness among citizens. The first investigations revealed that Guzman,
10:11
42, was in the driver's seat. Besides being the private secretary, she was also a close colleague of
10:17
brigadas from her work in Ixtapalapa.
10:24
Also in Mexico, a huge blast consumed the facilities of a fuel distribution company in the Mexican state of
10:30
Nuevo León. Authorities reported that the fire started at 2 pm local time on Wednesday,
10:36
raised in some 13 containers with more than 10,000 litres of capacity belonging to the company Marvik,
10:43
which distributes gasoline and diesel nationwide. In this context, 11 people had been evacuated from
10:49
the site and one injured person had been taken to a hospital. As of the latest update, firefighting
10:55
operations remain underway and officials have not confirmed the full extent of the damage or the cause of the fire.

11:35
Welcome back to From the South. Palestinian human rights organizations denounce the increasing physical
11:56
and psychological abuses against Palestinian hostages by the Israeli regime. The Nation's Prisoners Club and
12:03
the Adamer Prisoners Support and Human Rights Association condemned violations committed in
12:08
Tel Aviv Penitentiaries and described the conditions in Israeli prisons as highly dangerous. The organization
12:15
denounced the use of trunchies, machetes and police dogs to torture Palestinian hostages. More than 10,000
12:22
Palestinians are still held hostage in Israeli prisons, among them about 500 minors and dozens of women.
12:33
The International Committee of the Red Cross warned that the humanitarian situation in Gaza is on
12:40
verge of total collapse due to Israel's aid blockade. ICRC spokesperson Hishem Mohana denounced on Wednesday
12:48
the worsening crisis in the Palestinian enclave. In this regard, Mohana stressed that the resumption and
12:54
escalation of Israeli military operations and the ban on the entry of aid have exacerbated the situation in the
13:01
Strip. Furthermore, the ICRC official condemned as unacceptable the politicization of humanitarian aid and its
13:09
use as a form of political and military pressure.
13:16
In Palestine, the Israeli occupation forces have continued their aggression in the Gaza Strip,
13:21
where in a recent series of new deadly attacks, at least 93 people were killed. The offensive targeted the
13:28
Al-Aouda hospital in the north of the Palestinian territory with tanks firing on buildings of the
13:34
health center, including the specialized surgery department. In addition, earlier on Thursday,
13:39
rescue teams recovered 13 bodies from under the rubble of two houses bombed by Israeli
13:45
in Habalia al-Balad in the north of the Palestinian enclave. The number of Palestinians killed by the
13:51
Chinese regime in Gaza since the onslaught of its offensive in October 2023 has risen to 53,655,
14:00
while the number of wounded stands at 121,950.
14:12
Israeli occupation forces mounted Thursday incursions into the occupied West Bank and the whole
14:18
Gaza Strip so they only not only dropped bombings but also demolished villages, abducted and killed
14:25
Palestinian civilians. The Israeli troops raided early Thursday back at Al-Hattab village near Kalkilia
14:32
city in the West Bank. There, they evicted families from their homes. They even detonated a 120 square
14:39
meter residence of the Abdul Ghani family. In addition, the Palestinian Prisoner Society denounced the
14:44
abduction of 25 Palestinians, including former inmates and a woman. Likewise, occupation forces
14:51
stormed today the Al-Halal Zone refuge camp northern Ramallah and wounded seven people, including a senior
14:58
man. The International Organization for Migration, IOM, called for immediate action against the worsening
15:09
humanitarian crisis in Yemen, stating that they are on the brink of catastrophe. The entity detailed that
15:15
the Yemeni people are facing what could be their most difficult year and in their opinion, conflicts,
15:21
economic collapse and climatic impacts are increasing the humanitarian needs in the territory.
15:27
They also called on the international community to carry out operations in the country to help prevent
15:32
a possible humanitarian catastrophe, ensuring that the needs and access to essential services of the
15:38
population are met, in addition to providing economic opportunities and means of livelihood.
15:49
In Spain, teachers take to the streets of Madrid to denounce the precarious situation of public
15:54
education. Under the slogan, let's save public education, hundreds of people demand funding for
16:00
the country's public education. Teachers from kindergarten, secondary, special education and vocational
16:07
training participated in the mobilization day. All the educational sectors agree that the lack of
16:13
funding from the government is damaging the teaching and working conditions.
16:21
In the United States, two Israeli embassy staff members were shot and killed on Wednesday in
16:27
Washington DC. The deadly shooting occurred at about 9 pm local time near the Capitol Jewish Museum in
16:34
Washington DC, according to authorities. This Israeli foreign minister named the two victims as Jarron
16:40
Leshinsky and Sarah Lynn Milgrim. Pamela Smith, chief of the Metropolitan Police Department, stated that
16:47
authorities had arrested a single suspect in the shooting, identified as Elias Rodriguez, a 30-year-old from
16:54
Chicago, Illinois. Prior to the shooting, the suspect had been observed pacing back and forth outside the
17:01
museum. He approached a group of four people, pulled out a gun, and opened fire, wounding both of the deceased.
17:14
Preliminary investigation indicates that both victims were exiting an event at the Capitol Jewish Museum
17:21
located in the 500 block of 3rd Street Northwest when the shooting occurred. We believe the shooting was
17:28
committed by a single suspect, who is now in custody. Prior to the shooting, the suspect was observed pacing
17:35
back and forth outside of the museum. He approached a group of four people, produced a handgun, and opened fire,
17:42
striking both of our disputes.
