00:00The A167 Gateshead flyover, a 1960s era structure that previously carried approximately 40,000 vehicles daily, has been closed since the 13th December last year, due to serious safety concerns.
00:14Following inspections revealing structural issues, including a compromised supporting pillar, Gateshead Council decided to close the flyover to protect public safety.
00:23In response, the Council has announced plans to demolish the flyover, with preliminary works expected to begin in June.
00:31The demolition is scheduled to start in the autumn, with the goal of completing the project by the end of 2025-2026 financial year.
00:40An £18 million budget has been allocated for the demolition and subsequent regeneration efforts.
00:46Council leader Martin Gannon emphasised the need for a radical approach to transform the town centre.
00:53Stating that the flyover is an ISO and no longer serves the area's transportation needs, he highlighted the opportunity to replace the structure with a tree-lined boulevard, aiming to enhance the town's appeal to residents, businesses and visitors.
01:08The demolition will now be part of a broader regeneration plan for Gateshead's town centre, which has been in development since 2008.
01:17However, previous attempts to secure funding for the project have faced challenges.
01:23The Council envisions replacing the flyover with a more pedestrian-friendly environment, opening up new opportunities for housing and jobs.
01:31The Council are planning a campaign encouraging people to shop in the town centre, with high street traders having warned of the disruption caused by the flyover.
