Demolition of the Gateshead Flyover to take a whole year

The infamous A167 flyover that has caused major traffic disruption around Tyneside will be demolished. The council expects this could take a whole year, with warnings of further traffic disruption.

00:12elevated highway which has now been shut off to traffic for more than a month due to structural

00:16concerns in the hope of finally pressing ahead with long-standing redevelopment ambitions

00:22for that end of the town centre. Its closure has caused significant travel disruptions

00:27on Tyneside, even forcing Tyne and Wear Metro trains to be suspended through the area over

00:32Christmas. After a temporary support device was installed in December to prop up the flyover,

00:38a further phase of strengthening work is due to be taking place in the next couple of weeks,

00:43encasing two of its pillars in more concrete. Gateshead Council leader Martin Gannon said

00:48that even if that reinforcement allowed the flyover to be deemed safe for vehicles again,

00:53the Council's desire to ultimately demolish it means that they would unlikely bring it

00:57back into use.
