00:00Good morning everyone it's Steph at the Doncaster Free Press and it's Thursday the 22nd of May
00:05just bringing you some of our top headlines this morning. We've got a former Doncaster Rovers player
00:11who has pleaded guilty over his involvement in a plot to smuggle £600,000 worth of cannabis into the UK.
00:19J. Emmanuel Thomas who's 34 was arrested after 60 kilograms of cannabis was found in suitcases arriving at London Stansted Airport in September last year.
00:35The full story from the court is there. A little bit of background about the player as well if you're interested in that today.
00:43Then one that I sent out yesterday, it started off, we received reports of the police helicopter and emergency services.
00:54Initially in the Howarth area of Doncaster, I did a bit of digging and finally both the National Air Police Service and South Yorkshire Police eventually went through Nottingham and they knew nothing about it.
01:07South Yorkshire Police got back. It turns out there had been a reported sighting of a missing, sorry, a wanted man.
01:16So they ended up, the report was received yesterday morning in Bawtree Road, Tickle.
01:23So they were sent out and did a thorough search of the area. That's obviously why people saw it in Howarth as well. The helicopter was doing loops.
01:33It was out for, I think, quite a long time anyway. But eventually they had to call a search off because the man was unfortunately not located.
01:43And as we know at the moment, he's still at large. So I'll keep you up to date on that if we get any more information.
01:51And then finally some lovely, lovely, lovely news for Doncaster.
01:54The council has bought a George Cross, which was awarded to a local mine worker after he rescued a trapped college, college, colleague.
02:06The award was awarded to Charles Smith for his gallantry in the rescue, which took place at Asken, Maine, Collier in 1940.
02:16The medal went under the hammer at £12,000 in a recent auction. The buyer was City of Doncaster Council.
02:24But before everyone starts harping on about their tax being wasted, it was actually paid for through a donation from a private individual.
02:34So that's coming back to Doncaster. It will take pride of place in the gallery.
02:38A lovely piece of history there and the background about Charles and his history.
02:43Anyway, it's a fascinating story. So please have a read of that as well today.
