00:15After half a century into operation and relentless wear and tear from vehicles crossing from both directions,

00:21the two-kilometer span bridge that links the eastern Visayan provinces of Samar and Leyte

00:27has been recently found with structural damage along certain stretches,

00:31which begs urgent government intervention and immediate repair.

00:36In a presser earlier today, Public Works and Highways' big boss Manuel Bonoan

00:40told members of the Malacanang Press Corps of government's latest decision to build a San Juanico twin bridge,

00:46even while major rehab or repair work on San Juanico proceeds.

00:51The twin bridge the government has in mind is planned to rise right beside

00:55or close to the aging San Juanico, which after rehab work is complete in a couple years at least,

01:01its twin shall have done and in operation with a greater load capacity

01:05to withstand heavier trucks and automobiles crossing over.

01:08The idea of building a new one beside the bridge on the mend came up and gained quick currency

01:13because of its feasibility borne in large part of the financing from the ODA from Japan,

01:19Jaica most probably, which will bankroll much of the project.

01:22Hopes are high. The new bridge's design will be complete and approved by early next year,

01:27so construction can begin quickly.

01:32Turning to news and foreign shores, it started on March 2nd when Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu

01:38and his minions of hardline right-wingers in his coalition government

01:42decided to shut down land access to the ravaged Palestinian enclave

01:46in the hope of bending Hamas to release its remaining hostages

01:50with the hundreds of thousands of suffering and starving Palestinians as a bargaining chip.

01:56After over two and a half months of total blockade to access the rubble and besieged enclave of Gaza,

02:01the coalition government of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu

02:05finally relented to grant access to trucks carrying food and essential supplies

02:10needed so badly to the starving and marginalized Palestinians there.

02:14And yet the number of trucks permitted entry has been so few.

02:18A coordinating council for the Medicine San Frontieres or Doctors Without Borders

02:23described it as ridiculously inadequate

02:26and not even meeting the bare minimum to ease the worsening plight of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians.

02:32While this tiny ray of hope has shone through,

02:35the bombardment and artillery fire from the Israeli Defense Forces have proceeded without let-up.

02:40This ratcheting up the daily number of mostly innocent women and children winding up in body bags.

02:48Netanyahu and his minions came to a decision last week to launch a full assault and takeover

02:52of the poor and hapless Palestinian enclave in the hope Hamas yields in a sense to a deal

02:58that would release all hostages without restrictive conditions and agree to completely evacuate Gaza.

03:05But this stifling and cruel move by the Israeli government to allow so little aid to come into Gaza

03:10has only fueled the resolve of a number of European nations to include France, Germany and the United Kingdom

03:17to issue a warning to Netanyahu's extreme-right government to allow more aid to enter Gaza,

03:23less be held into account by a number of economic sanctions from the EU.
