00:00:00are faster than the cars were two years ago where's the speed coming from well I
00:00:05think the rules are trying to slow the cars at the moment down we had a rule
00:00:08change at the end of last year we'll have another one at the end of this year
00:00:11it's it's a permanent battle in in Formula One where you have the best
00:00:16engineers at work who will always be able with the financial background to
00:00:22make the cars quicker to then again change regulations slow them down I
00:00:27think in the racing is in the same situation you know and it's it's very
00:00:32normal one of the problems that is arising from this speed of course is
00:00:36tire wear in the French Grand Prix you had to make a pit stop for tires and you
00:00:41still came out and finished second you are you gonna be able to go the distance
00:00:43here on one set of tires it really doesn't matter I couldn't care less how
00:00:47many times I have to stop as long as I do well in the race so you're looking
00:00:50for a victory no even with a pit stop possibly well I hope we do well in the
00:00:56race I don't know if it's gonna be victory or what it's gonna be like but
00:01:00you know I'm on on good tires and I'll plan my race depending on what compound
00:01:08I run and how we want to do it pit stops are not a handicap they can work to your
00:01:12advantage it's a question of speed and economy in motorsport and we've seen on
00:01:17our live coverage of Grand Prix racing with ESPN this year a lot of cars run
00:01:21out of gas we saw the Grand Prix of San Marino that was a problem and we might
00:01:26well see the same kind of trouble here fuel consumption is going to be a
00:01:30problem they're gonna have to turn down the boost a little bit a thousand
00:01:33horsepower in qualifying here during this weekend for the race today they'll
00:01:37be doing 700 to 800 horsepower but still economy is going to play an enormous
00:01:42part well we've been talking to several of the team managers and it's going to
00:01:46be a fine line between how much power these drivers can use and how far they
00:01:50can go it's gonna go right down to the line just like it did in Imola we'll be
00:01:55back for more of the Marlborough British Grand Prix the British Grand Prix is
00:02:01brought to you by Chevrolet who invites you to see today's Chevy drive today's
00:02:05Chevy live today's Chevy and by Skoll bandits tobacco and a neat little pouch
00:02:11it's a little pouch of tobacco pleasure and by BF Goodrich makers of high
00:02:17performance TA radials we make cars perform
00:02:25United States of America that you're looking at a live shot from England in
00:02:30the Midlands of Great Britain the British Grand Prix being held at this
00:02:35disused airfield Silverstone you're looking at the starting grid of this
00:02:40Marlborough British Grand Prix the weather is fair but overcast with some
00:02:46rather heavy clouds in the last two days it hasn't been too nice the weather
00:02:51let's have a look at the starting grid and pole position is Keke Rossberg
00:02:54driving his Williams Honda in the front row with them Nelson PK from Brazil with
00:02:59the Olivetti BMW Brabham then Alan Prost with the Marlborough tag McLaren is third
00:03:06fastest with Ayrton Senna the young Brazilian and the John Player Lotus with
00:03:11a Renault engine for fastest and fifth fastest time is Nigel Mansell with the
00:03:15other Williams Honda Michele Alvareto is the first Ferrari on the grid he's
00:03:19sixth fastest seventh fastest a surprise to most people Andrea De Cesare driving
00:03:25the Ligier with the Renault engine in eighth fastest Elio De Angelis who's
00:03:30driving his backup car because he had an accident this morning came in contact
00:03:33with Minardi on the main street of all places wrote off his chassis and he's in
00:03:38a backup car and incidentally Keke Rossberg is also driving his backup car
00:03:43he had an engine failure on the warm-up this morning ninth fastest is Tio Fabi
00:03:48tenth fastest is Niki Lauda making up the top ten then Stephan Johansson the
00:03:52second Ferrari driver with Derek Warrick 12th fastest in the Renault 13th is
00:03:57Tambi his teammate with Patrese in the Alfa Romeo at 14th fastest Mark Schurer
00:04:03from Switzerland with the Brabham and the Olivetti colors is 15th 16th is
00:04:08Jacques Lafitte with the Ligier Renault 17th is Gerhard Berger as they move off
00:04:14for their one lap of warm-up 18th is Winkelhoff with the Skull Bandit he's
00:04:1918th fastest 19th Terry Butzen 20th is Martin Russell carrying Dow Chemical
00:04:25Identification on his insurance brokers of porcelain company name in England
00:04:31Alio is 21st fastest in the other Skull Bandit Eddie Cheever the American
00:04:35drivers way back in 22nd position not very suitable for him Martini and the
00:04:41Minardi car is 23rd fastest 24th is Jonathan Farmer Dr. Jonathan Farmer in
00:04:47the West Zakspeed 25th fastest the last row of the grid
00:04:51Kinzani and the Posello who just got here in no more 26th fastest making up
00:04:58the last in the grid is Beloff and that's the trouble you see on the grid
00:05:02there was the Renault engine Tyrell which has now found its way away
00:05:07Martin Brundle making his way around he'll catch them up he'll be all right
00:05:11and that's the grid it's always sad to see a new development car like that have
00:05:17a bit of a trouble right on the grid Jackie Martin Brundle a British driver
00:05:20here the British crowd very much hoping that he does well and he has done well
00:05:24in qualifying actually and there he is very frustrated sitting waiting to take
00:05:29off after three days of qualifying and testing and to be left on the grid what
00:05:34well they're weaving up and down the hangar straight there as they go into
00:05:38Stoke corner the grandstands all the way around this beautiful flat racetrack
00:05:43it's it's a racetrack of course that is to some people sort of dull on the way
00:05:50it's 2.9 miles it's almost three miles around and that weaving as we've
00:05:54recognized before for our American viewers Grand Prix racing is to warm up
00:05:59the tires they come around club corner now and John this racetrack is one of
00:06:07the fastest in the world as we've already recognized in our opening
00:06:10exactly boring it may not be for the drivers because they are reaching speeds
00:06:15of near on 210 212 miles an hour and as we said earlier Keke Rosberg was the
00:06:22first man to average 160 miles an hour around here now just to some of the
00:06:26Yanks that might seem a bit slow when they look at Indianapolis average speeds
00:06:30of over 200 miles an hour but remember in some of these turns they are all the
00:06:34way down into third gear maybe doing a mere 65 55 miles an hour but still well
00:06:43a third gear here can go up to 85 miles an hour but still 160 mile an hour
00:06:48average is pretty good around here well 160 mile an hour average keep in mind
00:06:51would be faster than the average of the Indy 500 so you're looking at a race
00:06:55that may well be faster than the average of the Indy 500 not as many pit stops
00:07:00here although the big story here is fuel consumption can those guys keep the
00:07:05power boost up in their turbos to give them good fuel consumption and good
00:07:09power that's going to be the balance here if the center and the yellow
00:07:13helmet coming through there now you see the Ferrari of Alvareto is number 27
00:07:19Keke Rosberg on the left-hand side of your screen that is pole position it's a
00:07:24right-hand bend it's the first bend that they're going to face and the starting
00:07:28grid is actually on a bend here which is extremely unusual this is at the
00:07:33chicane of Silverstone people are cleaning the grid now you will see in
00:07:38the top corner of your television sets in a few moments a set of lights when
00:07:42the red light goes on that is to say that they're under starters orders and
00:07:4610 seconds after that and the red light is on and they're off.
00:07:49Keke Rosberg gets away.
00:07:51Nelson Piquet and Keke Rosberg's been a slow start.
00:07:55Rosberg's away but Irvin Senna's taking the lead.
00:07:57Can he get past? No.
00:07:59And Irvin Senna takes the lead with Keke Rosberg second.
00:08:02Alan Prost looks like he's in front of the car, front of the first corner.
00:08:05We've had a spin out.
00:08:07And one of the Ferraris, it looks like Johansson's Ferrari is out.
00:08:10One of the Renaults is out. That is Johansson's Ferrari that is off the road.
00:08:14The Renault with the wheel off looks like it might be Warwick.
00:08:18We'll have a look in a second.
00:08:20We can't see at this distance. He's driving the car away.
00:08:23In the interest of safety, Patrick Tambay.
00:08:25Menard is the last car up.
00:08:27But there Keke Rosberg comes alongside now.
00:08:29Irvin Senna taking the fast line now.
00:08:31Leaving Keke Rosberg without any draft and aerodynamics.
00:08:34If it goes through Stoke Corner, the end of Hanger Street.
00:08:37Head towards Club Corner.
00:08:40This is the first lap of this Grand Prix of Great Britain.
00:08:43Nigel Mantle is well up, Keke.
00:08:45And Alan Prost is well up.
00:08:47So a first lap incident.
00:08:49It was lucky, Jackie.
00:08:51That first corner, even from a standing start,
00:08:53they're entering that corner at a good 85, maybe 90 miles an hour.
00:08:56And the cars are very close on that first lap.
00:08:59And it's certainly the most dangerous lap of the race.
00:09:01But here coming into the finishing the first lap, through the chicane.
00:09:04And it's Ayrton Senna and the Lotus leading the pack.
00:09:08The team mate, Danny Alvareto, from here.
00:09:12One of the heavy braking points on the circuit.
00:09:14A lot of passing going on in through here.
00:09:17Back up to speed again.
00:09:24And again, you can see Martin Brundle trying to make up some time
00:09:27from being left on the grid.
00:09:29Well, they're coming through there now, through Beckett's Corner.
00:09:32It is the slowest corner on the racetrack.
00:09:35It's a third gear corner.
00:09:37They file through there.
00:09:38And the car already going slowly.
00:09:40It's one of the back markers from earlier on.
00:09:42There's Senna leading.
00:09:43Then there's Rosberg.
00:09:44Then there's Mansell.
00:09:45Then there's Alain Prost.
00:09:46Then there's De Cesare.
00:09:47And then there's Nelson Piquet.
00:09:49There's a little bit of passing coming up.
00:09:50The Ferrari is coming up with alongside it right now.
00:09:53Elio de Angelis passes.
00:09:54Alvareto going into there.
00:09:56Then there's Warwick.
00:09:57And then there is Patrese.
00:10:00And again, Ayrton Senna closes the door.
00:10:03There is oil on the racetrack around there.
00:10:05There was a streak of oil.
00:10:07And you'll find that one of the cars has blown an engine.
00:10:09I could see a black mark down the racetrack.
00:10:12And that was oil being dropped.
00:10:15From our vantage point here in the announcing booth,
00:10:17we can see that Stefan Johansson has at least completed a lap
00:10:19and making it back into the pits.
00:10:21We don't know if he'll be ready to rejoin the race.
00:10:23But there, Andrei De Cesare is coming around Alain Prost.
00:10:27That is also a Pirelli shot car.
00:10:33So Pirelli is certainly doing quite well here this afternoon.
00:10:36Alvareto lines up, getting through the chicane very safely.
00:10:39And it's all down to bringing up the back of the field.
00:10:44Ayrton Senna, surprisingly, being able to stay ahead of Keke Rosberg,
00:10:50who should have an advantage on power on this extremely fast circuit.
00:10:54A great job being done by Elio de Angelis.
00:10:57Then Alvareto behind that.
00:10:59There you see Keke Rosberg on the left-hand side of your screen.
00:11:02The right-hand side going into this fast corner, Ayrton Senna.
00:11:05Then you see Nigel Mansell, then de Cesare, then Alain Prost.
00:11:08Alain Prost touching the ground, that's where the sparks were.
00:11:11That's Piquet.
00:11:12Then there's de Angelis, then there's Alvareto, then there's Warwick.
00:11:16And then there is Fabi.
00:11:20Jackie, the reason these cars are sparking now, of course,
00:11:23is because they're under full load of fuel.
00:11:26And Silverstone is not a particularly bumpy circuit,
00:11:28but still in several places you'll see the bottom of the chassis
00:11:32making contact with the tarmac and can allow a great deal of sparks going on.
00:11:37But as the race continues, the cars will come wider and that will stop happening.
00:11:41Well, in fact, it is the world's smoothest racetrack.
00:11:44And here we see a replay of that first lap action.
00:11:46The Ferrari has already spun and the incident has already occurred
00:11:49because Patrick Dambi's wheel is already off.
00:11:52You can see a lot of cars very wide on the outside there.
00:11:55And look at that coming together there.
00:11:57That looks like fast throttle that went up into the air there
00:12:00with the Renault-powered Tyrrell.
00:12:02Their sponsors only coming in for this, the British Grand Prix porcelain insurance brokers.
00:12:08My goodness, they needed a little insurance right there.
00:12:11The lead remains the same.
00:12:13Ayrton Senna and Keki Ross were drawing away from Nigel Mansell.
00:12:18Nigel Mansell has recovered from a heavy accident that he had two weeks ago
00:12:22at the Pau de Carte circuit in the south of France for the Grand Prix of France.
00:12:26Senna has led a lot of races this year.
00:12:29He's been on the pole a lot, but he's only finished in one race.
00:12:32In that race, he won the Grand Prix of Portugal in Lisbon in torrential rain conditions.
00:12:38In talking to Edson yesterday, we also discussed his accident at Pau de Carte,
00:12:42which is well over 200 miles an hour.
00:12:44When he went through the catch fencing after his engine exploded
00:12:48and really hit into the tire wall at well over 100 miles an hour,
00:12:52he said, yes, you do think of those things.
00:12:55When you're racing here around Somerset,
00:12:57you cannot solely put that type of experience out of your head within two weeks.
00:13:02Well, Ayrton Senna at this time leading the Marlboro British Grand Prix from Keki Rossburg.
00:13:08It's a fuel consumption race.
00:13:10They'll be looking after the power, and so will we, and we'll be right back.
00:13:15The Marlboro British Grand Prix
00:13:21...ESPN coverage of the Grand Prix of Britain,
00:13:24and there you see a replay of the accident that happened on the very first corner of the first lap,
00:13:29and there you see what happens now.
00:13:31Then one of the runners gets out of line, and it spins,
00:13:34and at that point, the accident started to take new dimensions.
00:13:38As the car spun out there, it came in contact with one of the Ferraris,
00:13:41his wheel came off, and then there was another incident a little further back.
00:13:45You see the car of Johansson.
00:13:47Since we have seen this replay, Johansson has been in the pit.
00:13:51The race continues, and here you see Ayrton Senna still leading this Grand Prix
00:13:55with Keki Rossburg, in my opinion, satisfied to stay in second place right now.
00:14:00The Honda engine Williams has got a better fuel economy factor built in
00:14:07than the Renault engine Jean-Claire Lotus, in my opinion.
00:14:11Although Senna certainly seems to be extending the lead.
00:14:14You see the Honda, Senna, Rossburg, the Chesiree,
00:14:17and that's a big move for him, driving the Vigier Renault,
00:14:21Mansell, Prost, and Piquet making up the sixth top.
00:14:24And look at this race that's going on right now.
00:14:26That is the blue car of the Chesiree, and you've got the Renault in there.
00:14:35Nigel Mansell is in there.
00:14:37He's dropped back. Nigel Mansell is in the middle of that,
00:14:40so the Chesiree is past Mansell, and then you have Alain Prost.
00:14:43That's Keki Rossburg with the blue and white crash helmet.
00:14:47Honda says that they've come a long way in their car plans for this year.
00:14:52You know, Jackie, you said that this is the smoothest racetrack in Formula 1.
00:14:56It must also be the widest, and in some of these positions,
00:14:59you'll see three cars abreast going down the back straightaway.
00:15:02That must be a little bit confusing for the guy in the middle
00:15:05to actually know what is going on on both sides at the same time.
00:15:09It does look here, by the way, just incidentally, that Mansell is having trouble
00:15:12because the Chesiree has passed him, now Alain Prost has passed him,
00:15:15and that is Mansell in that yellow-fronted car with the ICI identification.
00:15:20That's the Honda Williams, but he seems to be dropping back.
00:15:23It is a white circuit because, remember, this is an old airfield.
00:15:26The airfield was built in 1940.
00:15:28It was a bomber training squadron that was here during World War II.
00:15:32It's got three runways.
00:15:34The first British Grand Prix was run here in 1948,
00:15:37and it was then the home of the British Grand Prix.
00:15:40That year was won by Luigi Villaresi driving a Maserati.
00:15:45And here we have the Jonathan Palmer, the Zakspeed car, the West Zakspeed car.
00:15:52Very bad luck all year for Palmer.
00:15:55The car has never done too well.
00:15:56It looks like it's over for him for the day.
00:15:58Maybe I should explain.
00:15:59When you see a race car driver get out of the cockpit holding the steering wheel,
00:16:03it's not because it has actually come off.
00:16:05The cockpits are so cramped that the steering wheel is removable
00:16:09to allow the driver to get in and out more freely.
00:16:12So it's not that the wheel came off, and that's why he stopped.
00:16:16So Eiffel Center comes out of Hangar Straight, which is 2,329 feet in length.
00:16:23So there you see Rosberg has now done the fastest lap in a time of 1,13.379,
00:16:30which is a lot slower than the one minute five seconds that he did in qualifying.
00:16:36And, of course, the reason for that is simply that in qualifying
00:16:39they got special tires and, of course, special engines.
00:16:43Eiffel Center.
00:16:44Now, this is a big story.
00:16:46Eiffel Center has been involved in crashes in his last two races, in fact.
00:16:52The crash in the French Grand Prix resulted in him totally wrecking his Lotus.
00:16:57Now, John Vigiliano earlier asked Eiffel Center how this has, in fact, occurred.
00:17:22.
00:17:38A very high-speed accident in Circuit Paul Ricard.
00:17:41What happened?
00:17:43The engine blew through the end of the straight line,
00:17:47and when I just got into the corner, the oil light came in
00:17:52and the oil was just spread from the engine to the rear tire,
00:17:58and the car just went, and I just waited to stop.
00:18:03At a moment like that, well over 200 miles an hour, what goes through your heart or mind?
00:18:07I mean, what's the emotions of going through such a thing?
00:18:10Well, at that moment, I saw the car spun, and I was going backwards.
00:18:14I was just waiting to stop.
00:18:17There was nothing I could do.
00:18:18I just held myself as much as I could inside the cockpit, waiting for a big impact until it stopped.
00:18:27Okay, so here you are at Silverstone with the same optimum speeds here
00:18:30that the accident happened in Circuit Paul Ricard.
00:18:34Do you think about that at 200 miles an hour downhanger straight here?
00:18:38Yeah, it's not so much downhanger straight.
00:18:40I think club corner is more dangerous because the wall is closer,
00:18:43and once you are in the corner, if you lose the car, it's very heavy impact,
00:18:48much more than it seems on any other track.
00:18:51So I think every time that you come to club, you think about it for sure.
00:18:57It hasn't slowed you down too much, has it?
00:18:59Well, you either try or you don't.
00:19:02You can think about it, but you always try.
00:19:04Otherwise, you just stay on the pit lane.
00:19:08We're back live at the Marlborough British Grand Prix here in the midlands of England
00:19:12at an old disused airfield called Silverstone.
00:19:15You're looking at the leaderboard, and you're not looking at the leaders right now.
00:19:19That bell off in the till that you're looking at was the only four-engine powerplant in here.
00:19:26And there goes our leader, Ayrton Senna.
00:19:30Ayrton Senna got a handsome lead.
00:19:35Got a handsome lead.
00:19:36That bell off who's driving the little car with the four-engine.
00:19:40Look how Senna has opened up the gap.
00:19:42Just since we've been away from that commercial message, that Senna, then there's bell off,
00:19:46and now there is Keggy Rosberg on the top left-hand side of your screen there as he went out of picture.
00:19:52Ayrton Senna has taken on a very healthy lead here,
00:19:55and it would seem that the Renault powerplant is working very well.
00:19:58It does, however, seem to me that Rosberg, John, has come down the boost to go for fuel economy.
00:20:04We speculated about this before the race, and it seems that it's happening.
00:20:08Only minutes before the start, the Honda computers were working overtime
00:20:12to try and work out the exact distance and how much boost they could use under these weather conditions.
00:20:17So it looks quite fabulous for Ayrton Senna to be thrusting ahead here,
00:20:23but he has run out of gas in several races even so far this season,
00:20:27exactly when he was in the lead in Imola.
00:20:30He did not cross the line. He was one of four people who ran out of fuel there.
00:20:34So Ayrton may be enjoying a great breathing spell here,
00:20:38but this is where a driver has to calculate not only his own driving ability and his car,
00:20:44but he has to calculate exactly where he wants to be towards the end of the race.
00:20:50And, Jackie, this is why the drivers are a little bit upset with the fuel rule.
00:20:53They feel that they can't go out and race.
00:20:59Well, we're here at Silverstone. We're live with ESPN.
00:21:03We're at the British Grand Prix, and we'll be back.
00:21:08We're back live in Silverstone in England for the Grand Prix of Great Britain.
00:21:12You're looking at Alain Prost, who at the present time is in third place,
00:21:15and is catching up on Keke Rosberg.
00:21:18He had a little bit of trouble getting past Andrea de Cesari.
00:21:21He's now, however, still a long way behind this man, who is here for the tennis,
00:21:25driving the John Fleer Special.
00:21:27The Lotus with the Renault engine, who is still ahead of Keke Rosberg
00:21:32and a clear amount of road he has ahead of him.
00:21:36Through the left hand, very fast race track,
00:21:39as we keep reminding you about this Silverstone track.
00:21:44So it's through a fast left-hander.
00:21:49And Elio de Angelis is heading for the pitch.
00:21:52At a very slow speed, John. It looks like he's very slow indeed.
00:21:56Well, that's bad. Elio qualified quite well,
00:21:59and of course, he's second in the championship right now.
00:22:01Elio de Angelis last year finished in third in the championship,
00:22:05and is sitting second tied with Alain Prost.
00:22:09He needs every point he can get.
00:22:11And, Jackie, to me, it looks like an engine failure, actually.
00:22:14Yeah, he stopped. He's had trouble.
00:22:16Now he's getting outside assistance,
00:22:18so in any case, he would chance his R.B. disqualified.
00:22:21So that looks like the end of the race, or at least heavily penalized,
00:22:25he would be if he was given outside assistance,
00:22:27unless it was in the interest of safety.
00:22:29He's on tip-ins, or slashing past that there for the center.
00:22:33The World Championship standings, incidentally.
00:22:36The World Championship standings after the French draw,
00:22:40I might tell you, Alberto is still in the lead with 31 points.
00:22:43Second is Elio de Angelis,
00:22:45who has just, it would seem, almost retired from this race.
00:22:49He is equal second with Alain Prost with 26 points.
00:22:53Again, Alberto is 31.
00:22:55Fourth is Keke Rosberg with 18 points,
00:22:57and that's the man you're looking at right now.
00:22:59Stefan Johansson has got 16 points, and he is out of this race.
00:23:03And then Patrick Tamby, who also had an accident with Elio de Angelis.
00:23:08He had an accident with Johansson on the very first corner of the first lap.
00:23:12He's in sixth position in the World Championship with 11 points.
00:23:15Prost has now done the fastest lap with a one-minute 11.966,
00:23:19which indeed is 146 miles an hour average.
00:23:23He is catching Keke Rosberg for second place,
00:23:27and you see how close he is now.
00:23:29Definitely he's on to Keke Rosberg,
00:23:31and Rosberg is, in my opinion, not driving quite as hard as he perhaps could.
00:23:36John, not only is it fuel consumption here, but it's tires.
00:23:40They've got to conserve their tires because tire temperatures get hot,
00:23:44and therefore the tire performance goes off,
00:23:46so it could be Rosberg is saving those tires.
00:23:49Especially after the French Grand Prix, Jackie,
00:23:52he was sitting second with this exact picture, actually,
00:23:56with Prost all over him, and his tires were going off.
00:24:00He had to slide, he had to use the car,
00:24:02a little bit of oversteer, understeer to stay ahead of Prost,
00:24:06and very soon after that, he was in tire trouble.
00:24:10It's a very disturbing thing for a driver to be out there at these speeds,
00:24:14especially the wide, sweeping bends,
00:24:16and know that his tires are not generating the grip they should.
00:24:19In talking to Keke earlier, actually, we asked him about the tires,
00:24:23and he said he was going to try and make the race without a complete pit stop,
00:24:27but even if he had to stop, he would be charging back up until the point.
00:24:30Well, there's our leaderboard.
00:24:32The center remains the leader with Rosberg second, Prost third,
00:24:35Pichesser is fourth, Mantel is still fifth, and Niki Lauda is sixth.
00:24:39But I think we're going to see a path almost any moment now.
00:24:42You're going to see Alan Prost stalking him,
00:24:44you're going to see him choose his place,
00:24:46and you're going to see him overtaking,
00:24:48and that would put Alan Prost into second position.
00:24:50Keep in mind the World Championship that I just mentioned,
00:24:53for first place you get nine points,
00:24:56and for second place you get six points.
00:24:58Is he going to try it under braking?
00:25:00Is he doing it? And he's done it!
00:25:02Prost decisively passes for a second place right now,
00:25:06very clean, Keke Rosberg did not try to block him,
00:25:10he let him through, he knew he was coming,
00:25:12and I think you will find that Alan Prost may well have a different set of tires on.
00:25:18There are different compounds that they can choose in these situations,
00:25:24and you can choose a harder compound,
00:25:27and it did seem that McLaren were going to go for Bs all the way around,
00:25:31that's quite a soft compound all the way around.
00:25:34It's just the second softest compound available,
00:25:38so they have definitely started this race with a soft compound.
00:25:41And here we see this pass again in slow motion,
00:25:44Alan Prost on the right hand side of your screen there,
00:25:47with the red and white car patches,
00:25:49very clearly he uses the road,
00:25:51Keke Rosberg does not attempt to block him,
00:25:53this is the chicane at Woodcourt Corner,
00:25:56and we are on the left hand side,
00:25:58high up on that tower there in our commentary position,
00:26:01as the now Ayrton Senna comes into Woodcourt Corner,
00:26:05passing one of the slower cars,
00:26:07in fact it is Patrese and the Benetton car.
00:26:13Jackie, that Woodcourt Corner,
00:26:14that was one of your favorite corners before it became a chicane,
00:26:17it was a flat out corner in Formula 1,
00:26:20when they didn't have the aerodynamics and the tires that they have now,
00:26:23the Woodcourt Corner was one of your favorite places in motor racing,
00:26:26wasn't it Jackie?
00:26:27Well it was fast,
00:26:28it certainly was one of the more frightening corners,
00:26:30Silverstone in general is very fast in any case,
00:26:33that was Tio Fabi in fact.
00:26:36So this is the Silverstone track you're looking at,
00:26:38again ESPN give you live coverage
00:26:41of the Grand Prix World Championship Series,
00:26:43and we'll be right back.
00:26:46SILVERSTONE
00:26:52This is allowing them,
00:26:53this is Nicky Lauda coming through,
00:26:55maybe this is allowing them to keep the boots up,
00:26:59and go ahead and make a challenge through the field Jackie,
00:27:02that field management system is certainly one of the most efficient in Formula 1.
00:27:05Well since we were away on that last commercial break,
00:27:08Nigel Mansell came into the pit,
00:27:10he had a problem,
00:27:11and Nicky Lauda registered that fastest lap,
00:27:14and by doing so has got himself up into 5th position,
00:27:17so therefore the order now is Senna, Prost, Rosberg, de Cesari,
00:27:21and I think you'll see Nicky Lauda stalking him,
00:27:24then Nicky Lauda, then Piquet, and then Alvareto.
00:27:27You've got to remember that on the first lap,
00:27:29Nicky Lauda came around in 18th position,
00:27:33so he's gone from 18th position to 5th position
00:27:36here in the first 20% of the race.
00:27:38And the car ahead of him right now is Andrea de Cesari,
00:27:41that's the blue car,
00:27:43the VGA car,
00:27:45with the Renault engine,
00:27:47and Nicky Lauda of course driving the McLaren chassis
00:27:51with the tank Porsche engine in it.
00:27:55It's actually quite a battle Jackie,
00:27:57because we're having Pirelli tyres against Goodyear tyres,
00:28:00we're having a French chassis against a British chassis,
00:28:03an Austrian driver against an Italian driver,
00:28:06there's Nigel Mansell being interviewed by the BBC,
00:28:10down in the pits,
00:28:12Nigel also having an accident yesterday,
00:28:16I mean, last race and trying to recover from that accident,
00:28:19same place, same place that Ayrton Senna had his accident.
00:28:24Well there you see Keke Rosberg,
00:28:26who is now in 3rd position,
00:28:29and there you see the battle for 4th and 5th,
00:28:32Nicky Lauda is in 5th position,
00:28:34carrying the number 1 on his car,
00:28:36because of course he is the reigning world champion
00:28:38and McLaren are the Constructors' Championship.
00:28:42The number on the car is back,
00:28:45not to the order of the Drivers' World Championship,
00:28:48but to the order of the Constructors' World Championship.
00:28:52The Constructors' World Championship
00:28:54is something that the teams take for great pride.
00:28:58They take it for great pride,
00:29:00all the mechanics, all the designers,
00:29:02everyone is this great team effort.
00:29:05And the Constructors' Championship
00:29:07is something that they look forward to
00:29:09as much as the Drivers' Championship.
00:29:11And there goes Alain Prost,
00:29:13past one of the Markos,
00:29:15that's your old team there,
00:29:16the Tyrrell car being passed,
00:29:18Ayrton Senna coming up on the other Renault powered Tyrrell.
00:29:21Jack, you had a chance.
00:29:23Keke Rosberg is smoking.
00:29:24He is smoking, smoking badly and slowing down.
00:29:27It looked to me like Keke Rosberg was smoking.
00:29:30Now if that happens,
00:29:31we've got a whole new ball game here
00:29:34and it will be disappointing for Rosberg
00:29:36They're looking for him out on the racetrack
00:29:38and I think they may look longer than they anticipated.
00:29:42You see there that Niki Lauda
00:29:44has passed Andrea De Cesare.
00:29:46So that's a big thing for him.
00:29:48De Cesare is now relegated.
00:29:50Lauda has got himself into fourth place.
00:29:53And there you see,
00:29:54he's just done that maneuver.
00:29:55So Niki Lauda looking in his mirrors
00:29:57as he comes down,
00:29:58hangar straight, 2,300 feet long.
00:30:01Again, that McLaren touching the bottom,
00:30:03the sparks coming from underneath the car.
00:30:05Through Stoke Honda.
00:30:08McLaren seem to be battling more than the other cars
00:30:11and that indicates a soft chassis setup
00:30:14and there is Keke Rosberg's car.
00:30:16Keke, there on the left hand side of the screen,
00:30:19just walking out of camera.
00:30:20He's perfectly alright,
00:30:21walking back to the pits.
00:30:22Emotionally, he might be a little upset
00:30:24as Keke Rosberg pulled off the track,
00:30:26obviously with a motor failure.
00:30:28That's both Williams out of the race.
00:30:31Well, Honda have put in a lot of work
00:30:34and that work has been successful
00:30:37in the last couple of races.
00:30:39But today, not so good.
00:30:41Jackie, the Pirelli team of engineers
00:30:44have also been doing a great job.
00:30:46Nelson Piquet finally becoming competitive
00:30:48at the French Grand Prix,
00:30:50winning it decisively.
00:30:51We had a chance to actually ask
00:30:53the manager and director of development for Pirelli,
00:30:57Mario Mondozetti,
00:30:59about how they got things right
00:31:02at the Pirelli tyre compound.
00:31:08It's very simple,
00:31:09because we test in the winter,
00:31:11during the winter in Kyalami,
00:31:13in Brazil with very hot weather,
00:31:16in the very fast circuit as well.
00:31:18So, unfortunately, the first Grand Prix,
00:31:21part of Brazil,
00:31:23where Nelson broke the car after two laps,
00:31:26I would say,
00:31:27all the rest was done on the very cold circuit,
00:31:31the slow circuit,
00:31:32not abrasive,
00:31:34and with a very low downforce on the car.
00:31:37As soon as the Pirelli car was the first high-speed circuit
00:31:41with very hot weather
00:31:43and very abrasive conditions,
00:31:45automatically the results of the test
00:31:48that we got in South Africa comes out.
00:31:50Now, here in Silverstone,
00:31:52the temperatures are not warm,
00:31:54but the racetrack is fast.
00:31:56Is it compounds that you have found success on?
00:31:59Yes, parts of those,
00:32:01but even because we did the last test in Nürburgring,
00:32:04in Germany, last week,
00:32:06and we knew the construction of the compound
00:32:09for such kind of weather as well.
00:32:11So, we can see more from Pirelli in the future?
00:32:14I hope so.
00:32:17We're back live at Silverstone.
00:32:19The story of Pirelli there,
00:32:22of course Fuji are very heavily involved in racing
00:32:25and in fact has won the large majority of races this year
00:32:28and in fact they pretty much dominated Grand Prix racing
00:32:32until this last French Grand Prix victory they had.
00:32:35The car you're looking at right now,
00:32:37Alain Prost incidentally,
00:32:39is catching up on Ayrton Senna
00:32:41and in fact of course Senna and Prost
00:32:43are very much on Goodyear tyres.
00:32:46So, it's quite a tired battle
00:32:48and of course it's very interesting
00:32:50to have competition in racing.
00:32:52I think it's healthy
00:32:53and I think Goodyear would probably join me
00:32:55in saying that it's rather good
00:32:57that Pirelli have come round to be competitive
00:32:59in the fashion that they have over these last two Grand Prix.
00:33:02Alain Prost in the number two car there
00:33:05in second place as it is.
00:33:08Jackie, in talking to Leo Mel,
00:33:10who's the director of Goodyear Racing of course,
00:33:12he actually told me that they wanted Pirelli
00:33:14to start pushing them a little harder
00:33:16and they're certainly doing it here as they did in France
00:33:18because that is what keeps their engineers on their toes.
00:33:22But I'll tell you,
00:33:23when I saw the Goodyear boys
00:33:25climbing on their airplane out of France two weeks ago,
00:33:29they look like a high school football team
00:33:31who just lost the World Championship.
00:33:33People take it very seriously.
00:33:35A bunch of youngsters
00:33:37over here all over the world
00:33:39out of Akron, Ohio.
00:33:41There we have the leaderboard.
00:33:42Senna having quite a demanding lead
00:33:44but Alain Prost cutting it down.
00:33:46Every single lap Alain Prost
00:33:48is getting closer to Senna.
00:33:51Niki Lauda, his teammate,
00:33:52has done a fantastic job
00:33:53of driving through the field.
00:33:56Pichesser is still a great speed
00:33:58in the early opening parts of this race
00:34:00but he seems to be slowing down
00:34:01with Nelson Piquet coming up on him.
00:34:03Also with Pirelli tyres.
00:34:06Well, it might interest you to know
00:34:08that Prost is only 4.90 seconds
00:34:11behind Ayrton Senna.
00:34:13So we'll be giving more coverage
00:34:15in just a few moments.
00:34:20We are back live
00:34:21and there you see Alain Prost
00:34:22slipping past the car
00:34:24of the young Swiss driver,
00:34:26Marc Surer.
00:34:27As you saw in contextion
00:34:29as you see laps by Alain Prost.
00:34:31And there's our leader
00:34:32just going out of your screen
00:34:33and there's Alain Prost
00:34:35in your screen.
00:34:36Now that shows you
00:34:37how close Prost has come.
00:34:39There has been a real effort
00:34:41by this Hank McLaren team
00:34:43because Prost, there you see him
00:34:45getting into the picture
00:34:46as Ayrton just gets out of it.
00:34:48Senna driving the Lotus.
00:34:49There he is with the yellow helmet.
00:34:51And then you will see very soon
00:34:53Alain Prost coming into the picture.
00:34:56Both cigarette companies incidentally.
00:34:58It's a real battle of the cigarettes here.
00:35:00Mulder is sponsoring the Prost car
00:35:03and of course the Senna car
00:35:04being sponsored by John Blair,
00:35:06the cigarette manufacturer.
00:35:07You're looking at Alboreto
00:35:09and his Ferrari
00:35:10who's up to 6th position.
00:35:11But the story of the race so far
00:35:13unquestionably John
00:35:14must surely be Niki Lauda
00:35:16who has come from 18th position
00:35:18is now in 3rd.
00:35:19That's what Niki Lauda does best
00:35:21is pass other cars.
00:35:22But still, we've only gone about
00:35:2430% into this race
00:35:25and Niki Lauda going
00:35:26from a very bad start
00:35:28coming around in 18th position
00:35:30and now back up into 3rd
00:35:31is even amazing
00:35:32for the amazing Niki Lauda.
00:35:34Only 4.3 seconds difference
00:35:36between 1st and 2nd place.
00:35:37Now Michele Alboreto there,
00:35:39his teammate went out
00:35:40in the 1st corner.
00:35:41A short race for Stefan Johansen.
00:35:47Stefan Johansen of course
00:35:48was the driver earlier this year
00:35:50who got his big break
00:35:51and was called by the Ferrari team.
00:35:53He was out of a job
00:35:54or actually driving for any team
00:35:55he could get.
00:35:56And he's certainly done a good job
00:35:57up until now.
00:35:58I think Ferrari will understand
00:36:00how close things were
00:36:01down in the 1st corner
00:36:02and give Stefan all the room
00:36:04to improve throughout
00:36:05the entire season.
00:36:07Again, Michele Alboreto
00:36:08we gotta remember now
00:36:09he's leading the world championship
00:36:11at this point.
00:36:12He has, going into this race,
00:36:14only 4.3 over his competition
00:36:16and in 6th place
00:36:17he has one point
00:36:18if he finished
00:36:19in that particular position.
00:36:20So he has to try.
00:36:22He cannot really waste
00:36:23a particular race.
00:36:24He has to try and get
00:36:25as many points as possible
00:36:26with such a small lead
00:36:28in the world championship.
00:36:30These points become
00:36:31a very real thing
00:36:32for these drivers.
00:36:33Keke Rosberg as you can see
00:36:34is back into the pits
00:36:36and doing an interview there.
00:36:37He looks like Keke
00:36:39he certainly is a little upset.
00:36:41I was able to hang on
00:36:42to Senna but then
00:36:43if I would have kept his speed
00:36:44I would have been destroyed.
00:36:45I couldn't hear you.
00:36:46It was better
00:36:47to try to run my own pace.
00:36:48We'll be right back
00:36:49from Silverstone, England
00:36:50ESPN Auto Racing 85.
00:36:53We're very disappointed
00:36:54after two such...
00:37:01This is Jackie Stewart
00:37:02along with John Vigignano
00:37:03at Silverstone
00:37:04for the Marlborough
00:37:05British Grand Prix.
00:37:06The graphic you're looking at
00:37:07in your screen
00:37:08is to tell you that
00:37:09Niki Lauda won this year
00:37:10the last Grand Prix year
00:37:11and two years ago.
00:37:13Well Niki Lauda won actually
00:37:15the British Grand Prix
00:37:16last year
00:37:17which was at Brands Hatch.
00:37:18Alan Frost won
00:37:19the Grand Prix before that
00:37:20that was at Silverstone
00:37:21and then Niki Lauda
00:37:22the previous year
00:37:23also won the British Grand Prix
00:37:25which happened to be
00:37:26at Brands Hatch
00:37:27because Silverstone
00:37:28and Brands Hatch
00:37:29flip-flop the Grand Prix
00:37:31every year.
00:37:32A real traffic jam
00:37:33going on in there
00:37:34as Stefan Velov
00:37:35stays well out of the way
00:37:36there in the Tyrrell
00:37:37as he allows the race leader
00:37:39who is being caught up
00:37:41angrily there
00:37:42by the red and white car
00:37:44of Alan Frost.
00:37:45Let's have a look at this.
00:37:46The yellow helmet
00:37:47is that of Ayrton Senna.
00:37:48He doesn't know where
00:37:49to get past here
00:37:50nobody's letting him pass.
00:37:52He was chopped off
00:37:53by Jacques Lapid
00:37:54driving the Ligi.
00:37:56In between
00:37:57he has
00:37:58is Derek Warwick
00:38:00in the Renault
00:38:02and then there is Alan Frost.
00:38:03So there's your race leader
00:38:04right there
00:38:05and he's got to find
00:38:06a way past
00:38:08Jacques Lapid
00:38:09in the Ligi
00:38:10as they go through
00:38:11this Abbey curve
00:38:12very fast
00:38:13it's stiff here
00:38:14accelerating up
00:38:15towards the
00:38:16Woodcourt chicane
00:38:17he's got to slip past
00:38:18as he does there
00:38:19under braking
00:38:20coming through
00:38:21underneath the bridge there
00:38:22over 200 miles an hour
00:38:23goes through
00:38:24Alan Frost
00:38:25the red and white car
00:38:26there in your picture
00:38:27you can see
00:38:28he is less an hour
00:38:29than a second behind him
00:38:31and he is in fact
00:38:32in the picture.
00:38:33I can see
00:38:34Alan Frost
00:38:35is going to take
00:38:36the lead of this race
00:38:37and I hate to say it
00:38:38but John Bisignano
00:38:39chose Alan Frost
00:38:40to win this race
00:38:41in the lottery.
00:38:43The biggest reason
00:38:44you hate to say it
00:38:45is because we have
00:38:46five pounds on us.
00:38:47That may not be
00:38:48a lot to Americans
00:38:49but to a wee Scotsman
00:38:50it's a fortune.
00:38:51I must say that
00:38:52our producer
00:38:53also chose
00:38:54Alan Frost
00:38:55to win this race.
00:38:57But Ayrton Senna
00:38:58is still in the leading board
00:38:59here
00:39:00number one
00:39:01position
00:39:03and there of course
00:39:04both McLaren
00:39:05two and three.
00:39:06It must be terribly
00:39:07frustrating for
00:39:08Senna to come into
00:39:09a traffic situation
00:39:10like that.
00:39:11He has to be careful
00:39:12because the other cars
00:39:13are also racing
00:39:14one another.
00:39:15Jack Lafitte
00:39:16and Derek Warwick
00:39:17are trying to
00:39:18secure positions
00:39:19over one another
00:39:20and they simply
00:39:21can't disappear
00:39:22and let the leaders by.
00:39:23Now when you see
00:39:24the blue flags
00:39:25off to the side
00:39:26being waved
00:39:27at these drivers
00:39:28you have to let them know
00:39:29to look in their mirrors
00:39:30and to be conscious
00:39:31that there are four
00:39:32faster cars
00:39:33coming up on them
00:39:34and here comes
00:39:35Alain Frost
00:39:36the brakes on this McLaren
00:39:37are working fantastic
00:39:38going into that
00:39:39chicane alone
00:39:40it looks like he gained
00:39:41half a tire length
00:39:42number one
00:39:43and number two
00:39:44there you see the difference
00:39:45is only 1.5 seconds
00:39:48Alain Frost
00:39:50coming in on Senna
00:39:53I think Senna
00:39:54has maybe a little bit
00:39:55of power advantage
00:39:56but certainly McLaren
00:39:57has always been
00:39:58fantastic handling
00:39:59and chaffing
00:40:00in the last three years
00:40:01but on the brakes
00:40:02Jackie I think
00:40:03on the brakes
00:40:04that's where
00:40:05these McLarens
00:40:06have been doing
00:40:07most of their passing
00:40:08is into the slower corners
00:40:09down for maximum speed
00:40:11Well of course
00:40:12the point is here
00:40:13that it depends
00:40:14on how much
00:40:15turbo boost they have
00:40:16loaded onto the engine
00:40:17as to how fast
00:40:18they're going
00:40:19if fuel consumption
00:40:20is something
00:40:21very much in
00:40:22Ayrton Senna's mind
00:40:23he will have cut down
00:40:24the brake horsepower
00:40:25in order to save fuel
00:40:26on the other hand
00:40:27the fuel management
00:40:28program
00:40:29that the McLaren
00:40:30and TAG have
00:40:31is probably
00:40:32more sophisticated
00:40:34There you see
00:40:35the Lotus going
00:40:36through Abbey Curve
00:40:37there
00:40:385-speed gearbox
00:40:39for you
00:40:40you'll be in 5th gear
00:40:41right there
00:40:42you'll be dropping
00:40:43in now into 3rd gear
00:40:44going through the chicane
00:40:45in 3rd accelerating
00:40:46driving 4th gear
00:40:47about now
00:40:49accelerating
00:40:50along towards
00:40:51Cox Corner
00:40:533 mile circuit
00:40:54into Cox
00:40:55probably again
00:40:56in 3rd gear
00:40:58into 4th gear
00:41:00going through
00:41:01Madrick now
00:41:02getting into
00:41:035th gear now
00:41:04in top gear
00:41:06Maggots
00:41:07that was
00:41:08now into Becketts
00:41:093rd gear corner
00:41:10braking hard
00:41:11accelerating
00:41:12away from
00:41:13Becketts Corner
00:41:14into Chapel Curve
00:41:15that's a left-hander
00:41:16going on
00:41:17to the main
00:41:18hangar straight
00:41:19there's 2,300
00:41:20feet in length
00:41:21getting up
00:41:22to a speed
00:41:23of about
00:41:24195-196
00:41:25miles an hour
00:41:26now before
00:41:27Stoke Corner
00:41:284th gear for
00:41:29Stoke Corner
00:41:30very smooth
00:41:31to go through here
00:41:32don't slide the car
00:41:33don't get the tyre
00:41:34temperatures up
00:41:35to Club Corner
00:41:36my brother had a
00:41:37crash here
00:41:38at Club Corner
00:41:39turned the D-type
00:41:40Jaguar upside down
00:41:41a number of years ago
00:41:42going through
00:41:43Club now
00:41:44and heading back
00:41:45to Abbey Cove
00:41:46in 5th gear
00:41:47by now
00:41:48heading down
00:41:49towards this bridge
00:41:50the Dealey Express
00:41:51bridge
00:41:52going through that
00:41:53at around
00:41:54200 miles an hour
00:41:55coming up
00:41:56in Martini
00:41:57Martini is a man
00:41:58who they all want
00:41:59to avoid
00:42:00came in collision
00:42:01this morning
00:42:02with Elio D'Angelo
00:42:03he's on the main
00:42:04straight
00:42:05and they both
00:42:06crashed
00:42:07and wrote off
00:42:08their cars
00:42:09coming up
00:42:10on the
00:42:11left
00:42:12and
00:42:13coming up
00:42:14in
00:42:15Martini
00:42:16Martini is
00:42:17a man
00:42:18who they all
00:42:19want to avoid
00:42:20came in collision
00:42:21this morning
00:42:22with Elio D'Angelo
00:42:23he's on the main
00:42:24straight
00:42:25and they got
00:42:26through there
00:42:27as they head down
00:42:28again
00:42:29here they come
00:42:30into hangar
00:42:31straight
00:42:32and there you see
00:42:33the yellow helmet
00:42:34cocking to the side
00:42:35just looking in these
00:42:36rear view mirrors
00:42:37just to be able
00:42:38to see
00:42:39and Prost is
00:42:40still bottoming
00:42:41still sparks
00:42:42coming out of
00:42:43that car
00:42:44the British Grand Prix
00:42:45ESPN's coverage
00:42:46will continue
00:42:47in a moment
00:42:48we're back
00:42:49live at
00:42:50Silverstone
00:42:51for the Marlborough
00:42:52British Grand Prix
00:42:53in the skies
00:42:54of Britain there
00:42:55looking down
00:42:56is the John Blair
00:42:57Special
00:42:58driven by Ayrton Senna
00:42:59the black car
00:43:00on the right hand side
00:43:01followed by the
00:43:02red and white car
00:43:03of Alan Prost
00:43:04he was much
00:43:05closer than that
00:43:06when we left
00:43:07for our commercial
00:43:08but he did in fact
00:43:09attempt a pass
00:43:10coming into
00:43:11the Woodcote chicane
00:43:12and by so doing
00:43:13lost some ground
00:43:14on Ayrton Senna
00:43:15I think you will
00:43:16see that ground
00:43:17again being regained
00:43:18and I think
00:43:19within about
00:43:20three or four laps
00:43:21Alan Prost
00:43:22is the black car
00:43:23of a young
00:43:24Brazilian
00:43:25Ayrton Senna
00:43:30you know Jackie
00:43:31also this whole
00:43:32scene reminds me
00:43:33of when I was
00:43:34standing here
00:43:35at trackside
00:43:36way back in 1969
00:43:37and you were not
00:43:38in a red and white car
00:43:39you were in a
00:43:40beautiful
00:43:41Pirel Matra
00:43:42and the man
00:43:43in front of you
00:43:44was Jochen Rins
00:43:45who was also
00:43:46in a Lotus
00:43:47many people
00:43:48refer to that
00:43:49as one of the
00:43:50greatest
00:43:51racing battles
00:43:52of all time
00:43:53what's it like
00:43:54to be trying
00:43:55to eat away
00:43:56just every tenth
00:43:57of a second
00:43:58at a car
00:43:59in front of you
00:44:00like that Jackie
00:44:01well Silverstone
00:44:02is a very good
00:44:03example of how
00:44:04smooth you've
00:44:05got to be
00:44:06how clean a
00:44:07driver you've
00:44:08got to be
00:44:09and how well
00:44:10you've got to
00:44:11work traffic
00:44:12because if you
00:44:13lose time
00:44:14it's difficult
00:44:15to make it up
00:44:16again
00:44:17Jochen and I
00:44:18had a great
00:44:19battle
00:44:20I was
00:44:21in the
00:44:22back
00:44:23of the
00:44:24wing
00:44:25and it kept
00:44:26touching the
00:44:27rear wheel
00:44:28I drew
00:44:29alongside him
00:44:30luckily
00:44:31and was able
00:44:32to tell him
00:44:33about it
00:44:34he was a good
00:44:35friend
00:44:36he crawled
00:44:37into the
00:44:38pit
00:44:39he didn't
00:44:40doubt my
00:44:41judgement
00:44:42he got
00:44:43a change
00:44:44went back
00:44:45out
00:44:46would've
00:44:47finished
00:44:48second
00:44:49and
00:44:50he
00:44:51won
00:44:52the
00:44:53French
00:44:54Grand Prix
00:44:55the last
00:44:56Grand Prix
00:44:57only two
00:44:58weeks ago
00:44:59and that
00:45:00Alboreto is
00:45:01leading the
00:45:02world championship
00:45:03right now
00:45:04the positions
00:45:05you're talking
00:45:06about
00:45:07is the two
00:45:08leaders are
00:45:09actually
00:45:10lapping
00:45:11forth in
00:45:12fifth place
00:45:13now
00:45:14Petrezzi
00:45:15there in
00:45:16the Benetton
00:45:17car
00:45:19Nelson
00:45:20Piquet
00:45:21and the
00:45:22Olivetti
00:45:23Brabham
00:45:24you must be
00:45:25very careful
00:45:26when you try
00:45:27and lap
00:45:28Petrezzi
00:45:29no matter
00:45:30where he's
00:45:31at
00:45:32well if
00:45:33you recall
00:45:34watching on
00:45:35ABC
00:45:36the coverage
00:45:37of the
00:45:38Monaco
00:45:39Grand Prix
00:45:40Petrezzi
00:45:41came into
00:45:42contact
00:45:43with
00:45:44Nelson
00:45:45Piquet
00:45:46in a
00:45:47few
00:45:48minutes
00:45:49ago
00:45:50and
00:45:51again
00:45:52these
00:45:53drivers are
00:45:54battling
00:45:55for their
00:45:56positions
00:45:57they're
00:45:58battling
00:45:59for their
00:46:00points
00:46:01and they
00:46:02simply
00:46:03can't put
00:46:04down
00:46:05a lap
00:46:06down
00:46:07by a
00:46:08few
00:46:09young
00:46:10countrymen
00:46:11and again
00:46:12these
00:46:13drivers are
00:46:14battling
00:46:15for their
00:46:16positions
00:46:17and they
00:46:18simply
00:46:19can't
00:46:20put
00:46:21themselves
00:46:22in a
00:46:23bad
00:46:24position
00:46:25to try
00:46:26and let
00:46:27the leaders
00:46:28by
00:46:29everyone
00:46:30doesn't
00:46:31want to
00:46:32hold up
00:46:33the leaders
00:46:34but if
00:46:35it's going
00:46:36to cost
00:46:37them a
00:46:38half a
00:46:39second
00:46:40or a
00:46:41tenth
00:46:42of a
00:46:43second
00:46:44they
00:48:46can't
