00:00:00The island nation of Australia seeks to match the beauty of its countryside with a reputation
00:00:06of being a world sports center.
00:00:08In September, 102,000 watched as Essendon defeated Hawthorne for the second straight
00:00:13year in the grand finals of Australian rules football.
00:00:18Perhaps the most widely known Australian sporting event is the America's Cup.
00:00:23It won't be held until 1987, but preparations are already underway to capture this prestigious
00:00:28award.
00:00:29Today, perhaps the biggest sporting event down under since the 1956 Olympic Games, the
00:00:35Australian Grand Prix.
00:00:37Alain Prost has already captured the world driving title.
00:00:40After years of trying, the Frenchman won five races this year, was disqualified from a sixth,
00:00:45and except for the races in which he crashed, he failed to finish outside the top five.
00:00:51Perhaps the hottest driver in Formula One is Nigel Mansell.
00:00:54After five years and 72 races, Nigel finally won a victory at Grands Hatch and followed
00:00:59up with another win in South Africa.
00:01:02Mansell starts in second place today in the first ever Australian Grand Prix.
00:01:07Well, good morning, everyone.
00:01:08We welcome you to our studios in Bristol, Connecticut, for our delayed coverage of the
00:01:12Australian Grand Prix.
00:01:14I'm Bob Jenkins, along with our regular color commentator for our Formula One telecast,
00:01:19John Bisignano.
00:01:20The reason for delayed coverage, there is an 18-hour difference between here and Australia.
00:01:25It's the final Formula One race of 1985, and, John, it's a real happening in Australia.
00:01:31Thousands of spectators have gathered.
00:01:33It's a real event for that country.
00:01:34Well, the Australians are very competitive people, and even between the communities,
00:01:38they're trying to strive for notoriety of being sports centers, as you said.
00:01:44Hotel rooms totally out within a 100-mile radius, some 8,000 private homes have been
00:01:49asked to take in spectators.
00:01:51They're expecting near on 120,000 people for this first Grand Prix in Australia.
00:01:55Well, the driving title has already been decided in 1985, the world champion Alain Prost.
00:02:01However, there is another battle underway within this race today, and that's for the
00:02:05Constructors' Championship.
00:02:07And Ferrari can capture the Constructors' Championship from McLaren with good finishes
00:02:12here today.
00:02:13Mathematically, they need to score 11 points, Bob, and the Constructors' Championship is
00:02:17something that the teams take great pride in.
00:02:19It might not have the ambiance of the Drivers' World Championship, but still, to the Constructors,
00:02:25this is what's really important to them.
00:02:27The 16th and final race of 1985 for the Formula One series will be held in just a moment in
00:02:34Australia, and we'll be back with it in just a moment.
00:02:38Welcome back to ESPN's delayed coverage of the Australian Grand Prix.
00:02:43On the pole for today's race will be Ayrton Senna from Brazil.
00:02:46It's his seventh pole position victory of 1985.
00:02:50Jackie Stewart is in Adelaide, Australia, and had this conversation with Ayrton.
00:02:56Pole position for the seventh time in this year of Grand Prix racing, the final race
00:03:01of the year.
00:03:02Ayrton, you must be very happy.
00:03:05I should be very happy, of course.
00:03:07I am very happy for myself, for the team, and it was a very good effort that I did.
00:03:13I couldn't do any better.
00:03:14You told me a minute ago you couldn't have done a thousandth of a second better than
00:03:18you just achieved.
00:03:19I think so.
00:03:20I think I had my best in that lap, and the car was quite good as well.
00:03:26The characteristics of this racetrack, slippery, you say?
00:03:29Quite slippery, very difficult to put the power on the ground.
00:03:32You are spinning wheels all over the place, second, third, fourth, fifth gear, and therefore,
00:03:37I think the one that managed to put the power better on the ground is the one that probably
00:03:42go faster.
00:03:43What about the race itself?
00:03:44You've had a lot of pole positions.
00:03:45You've had seven of them now, but not that many victories.
00:03:48Can we do it tomorrow?
00:03:49We will try, for sure, but it's going to be a very long race, probably the longest
00:03:53one in the year, apart from Portugal, which was in the rain, and under very difficult
00:03:59conditions.
00:04:00It's quite hot, a slippery track, full of corners and gear changes.
00:04:03I mean, the hand tomorrow is going to be very hard on the gearbox.
00:04:08Best of luck.
00:04:10Without doubt, one of the most promising drivers in Formula One, and he certainly made his
00:04:13mark in that type of racing this year.
00:04:15Well, he's put on some tremendous shows, that's for sure, and he is emerging as certainly
00:04:20the next potential world champion, maybe not next year, but the year after, for sure.
00:04:26Also, we talked to Nicky Lauda.
00:04:28Jackie Stewart asked him about his potential retirement here at the Australian Grand Prix.
00:04:34Here in Adelaide, it looks like the swan song of Nicky Lauda.
00:04:37It looks like this time he, in fact, is going to retire and stay retired.
00:04:41However, he has had many great offers, most recently for $5 or $6 million, and that's
00:04:47very tempting.
00:04:48He has already announced that he's going to retire, but can he stay out with that kind
00:04:51of offer coming in?
00:04:53Well, it's better to ask Nicky Lauda that question.
00:04:57I decided in August that I'm going to stop at the end of this year and to run my airline
00:05:01in Austria, so I tell you, even with these offers, I hope that my character is strong
00:05:06enough to maintain my position, and I think I will be able to.
00:05:10I hear just a wee bit of doubt in there, Nicky.
00:05:14Yes, I got a little Scottish influence, like you do, and I prefer to have the money in
00:05:18the bank than not, but to be straight again, I really believe that it's the right time
00:05:23for me to stop, and you have to think the other way.
00:05:27Let's say they only offer $500,000 instead of $5 million, for example.
00:05:32You wouldn't think about it, and I wouldn't, so really it's only the money which makes
00:05:37you go for it.
00:05:38I think this is absolutely wrong, because motor racing is dangerous and needs much more
00:05:43than being paid for doing it.
00:05:44I mean, if your heart is not with it anymore, the best thing is to stop, even with a good
00:05:49offer.
00:05:50So it appears as if this will be the final race for Nicky Lauda.
00:05:55The start of the Australian Grand Prix is just moments away.
00:05:58We'll be back for it in a moment.
00:06:08It's a very sunny and hot day in Australia.
00:06:11The description of the course, it's 2.35 miles in length.
00:06:15There are 13 turns, 7 rights and 6 lefts, 1 chicane and 1 hairpin.
00:06:21It also has a very long straightaway in which speeds reach well over 200 miles an hour.
00:06:26Now look at the starting lineup for today's Australian Grand Prix.
00:06:31On the pole will be Ayrton Senna in car number 12, driving the Lotus, his seventh pole this
00:06:36season.
00:06:37Outside of row number 1 will be Nigel Mansell in the Williams Honda.
00:06:40The second row, K.K.
00:06:41Rossberg in the Williams Honda and Alain Prost in the McLaren Tag.
00:06:45In row number 3 will be Michele Alboreto, car 27, the Ferrari, and Mark Schur in the
00:06:50number 8 Brabham BMW.
00:06:52In row number 4 will be Gerhard Berger in the Arrows BMW and Patrick Tambay in the Renault.
00:06:58And in the fifth row, Nelson Piquet, car number 7, the Brabham, and Elio de Angelis in the
00:07:03Lotus.
00:07:05In the sixth row, Terry Bootson and Derek Warwick, row number 7, will have Eddie Cheever
00:07:11and Riccardo Patrese.
00:07:13In the eighth row will be Stefan Johansson in the Ferrari and Nicky Lauda in the number
00:07:171 McLaren.
00:07:18The ninth row, Martin Brundle in the Tyrrell and Philippe Streif in car number 25.
00:07:23The tenth row, Alan Jones in the Beatrice Lola and Jacques Levine.
00:07:28In row number 11, Pier Carlo Gianzani and Ivan Capelli.
00:07:33And in the twelfth row will be Pier Luigi Martini and Teo Fabi.
00:07:37All alone in row number 13 will be Uwe Rothengaarder in the number 24 Osella Alpha.
00:07:42Well, the flag has been given.
00:07:44The cars move away for their warm-up lap, and we are just a few moments away from the
00:07:49start of this Australian Grand Prix.
00:07:51There will be 82 laps over this 2.35 mile course.
00:07:56Well, there's some great street racers up front here.
00:07:58Of course, you have Theo Tinsenna, who mastered Monte Carlo both wet and dry.
00:08:02Nigel Mansell did very well in Detroit and Dallas.
00:08:05Keke Rosberg, the winner of the Monaco Grand Prix, again in both wet and dry conditions.
00:08:11So, for a street course, the first three qualifiers here are great street racers.
00:08:16They know how to come close to the walls and not touch them.
00:08:19Great deal of competition up front.
00:08:21In the Williams team alone, you have Keke Rosberg, who has been considered the number
00:08:25one driver in that team for the last couple of years, but Nigel Mansell has won the last
00:08:29two races.
00:08:30Keke wants to go out of this race for sure, beating his teammate before he moves on next
00:08:35year to another team.
00:08:37Twenty cameras are covering this course.
00:08:39There are 16 cameras actually located on the course, with four in the pit area.
00:08:43And Patrick Tambay will be carrying an in-car camera for the duration of the event.
00:08:49And this is giving us some tremendous pictures.
00:08:52This should be an exciting view from the cockpit of his car.
00:08:56You can see the cars come down, warming up their tires.
00:08:59This is the long backstretch, the fastest part of the race course.
00:09:03And the times and the speeds have been well over 200 miles an hour before they have to
00:09:08brake heavily and go into this hairpin.
00:09:10It's very unusual for a street course, Bob, to have a 200-mile-an-hour straightaway.
00:09:15At Monte Carlo, the top speed may be 176 miles an hour going down the hill into the chicane
00:09:20and so forth.
00:09:21At the straight, even an average speed there of around 82 miles an hour.
00:09:24So this is, for sure, the fastest street course in existence today for Formula 1 cars.
00:09:31Normally in Australia on a Sunday morning or a late Sunday morning, early afternoon,
00:09:36about the only thing that disturbs the peace is the sound of some church bells.
00:09:41But today it's the sound of racing engines as the Formula 1 circus has arrived in Adelaide,
00:09:47Australia.
00:09:48Out of the hairpin now, and the cars will be stopping before getting the green
00:09:54and the start of this race.
00:09:57Once again, back in the in-car camera with Patrick Tambay.
00:10:01One thing that Mansell's trying to do is be the first British driver to ever have
00:10:05three Grand Prix victories in a row.
00:10:07No British driver has ever done that, but Nigel is going to try and make that
00:10:11the first here in Australia at the first Grand Prix.
00:10:15Nigel is on the left of your screen starting in second position.
00:10:18Senna is the pole sitter.
00:10:20We get set to go with the Australian Grand Prix, the first ever in this country.
00:10:28Senna's going to want to be first into that corner.
00:10:34And Senna just a little slow getting off the line,
00:10:37and Nigel Mansell from outside of row number one grabs the lead
00:10:41as they come down into the chicane.
00:10:43Nigel Mansell has grabbed the lead here with K.K. Rosberg, his teammate,
00:10:48dropping into third position.
00:10:49Alan Jones having a tough time getting away from the starting line,
00:10:52and that Beatrice Lola that he appears to be rolling now.
00:10:55The cars come down and into one of the tight corners,
00:11:00and Mansell is forced off of the race course as Senna got alongside him.
00:11:05Mansell losing several positions now.
00:11:07K.K. Rosberg grabs the lead.
00:11:09Senna is in second, and Michele Alboreto is third.
00:11:12Well, as I said, some street racers up front,
00:11:15and whoever gets the lead early on in this race is going to be able to dominate things,
00:11:19and for sure Ayrton Senna wanted to be in that lead.
00:11:22I think he really pushed Nigel off into the dirt there,
00:11:24and Nigel, I don't see him coming out of the dirt there.
00:11:27I don't see him in the back.
00:11:28I think he may have had a problem in there.
00:11:30Well, we'll wait and see.
00:11:32In any case, K.K. Rosberg and the other Williams Honda as sparks
00:11:36are beginning to show from the underside of the Rosberg car
00:11:39as they come down the long backstretch.
00:11:41Now those sparks will become less and less evident
00:11:45as the weight of the car becomes lighter and as the fuel is used up.
00:11:49Rosberg is the leader with Ayrton Senna running in second position,
00:11:53a tough break for Nigel Mansell,
00:11:55who was forced off the course while in the lead
00:11:58in one of the first few corners of the race course.
00:12:01It'll be tough for him to make up the spaces that he needs
00:12:04to secure that third victory in a row now, Bob, that's for sure.
00:12:08Coming down along the pit straightaway here, that's the first lap completed,
00:12:11but I cannot believe how far K.K. Rosberg and Ayrton Senna
00:12:15have actually pulled away.
00:12:16They seem to be pulling away quite easily.
00:12:18It looks like the course is quite bumpy.
00:12:20I wasn't aware of the bumps in this course,
00:12:22and under braking conditions, that can be very hazardous.
00:12:26Rosberg and Senna running first and second,
00:12:28a little bit of racetrack between second and third position.
00:12:31Running in third is Michele Alvaredo, followed by Alain Prost,
00:12:35then Gerhard Berger running in fifth place,
00:12:38and Mark Schur is running sixth.
00:12:41It's nice to see Berger and Schur up there.
00:12:44And here we go to the in-car camera.
00:12:45This is the start of Patrick Tambay.
00:12:47We'll try and see if they pick up Nigel Mansell in that incident.
00:12:50Patrick did start quite a ways back from them,
00:12:53but right up the back of Bootsen there.
00:12:56Gosh, you can see the very first start.
00:12:59What they do is just fight for position.
00:13:01They try and maintain their own ground,
00:13:02but take up anybody else's that they can get.
00:13:04Now, we're coming down into the corner, I think,
00:13:06where this incident happened.
00:13:10Fantastic coverage here.
00:13:13Yes, there's Nigel Locke.
00:13:14Well, he did come back on the track,
00:13:17so we know that he is running.
00:13:18We have no idea if there were any complications
00:13:20caused by that incident.
00:13:22Well, he lost several positions in any case,
00:13:25and Mansell has got a lot of work to do now
00:13:28to get back up into the top spot.
00:13:32Nigel Mansell has won the last two Formula One races.
00:13:36Those, of course, were in Brands Hatch,
00:13:40the European Grand Prix, and the South African Grand Prix.
00:13:43There are the leaders, K.K. Rosberg,
00:13:45followed closely by Ayrton Senna.
00:13:49K.K. Rosberg once mentioned to me
00:13:51the erratic driving style of Ayrton Senna,
00:13:54and I wanted to remind him that his second year in Formula One,
00:13:57his driving style was very similar,
00:14:00and actually at some point has not improved that much.
00:14:03But K.K. has to be watching in his mirrors
00:14:05to make sure that Ayrton doesn't become
00:14:07a little bit more Brazilian enthusiasm,
00:14:10come into his bloodstream there,
00:14:12and maybe do the same thing to him
00:14:14that Nigel Mansell unfortunately was beset upon.
00:14:18But K.K. can also try and pull away here.
00:14:22I can't figure out exactly where the Lotus is losing ground to K.K.,
00:14:26but the Williams have certainly been performing very well,
00:14:29both in braking and handling,
00:14:31but the Honda power has been what's been significant in the last two races.
00:14:37And something I want to bring up,
00:14:39Gerhard Berger there in the Barclays era,
00:14:41and also Mark Sewell,
00:14:43there's a saying in motor racing,
00:14:44they only remember your last event.
00:14:46These are two free agents that deserve a good ride next year,
00:14:50so this race they're going to try and do everything possible
00:14:53for the team managers,
00:14:54and in the pits, Mansell in the pits.
00:14:56And they're not moving that fast around the car, Bob.
00:14:59It looks like they may have a problem over in a,
00:15:01they're looking at the suspension there.
00:15:03That's where the contact took place.
00:15:05I would imagine that when he did get off course,
00:15:07at least something broke in the suspension
00:15:09that's going to force him out of today's Australian Grand Prix,
00:15:12and he could very well end up being the first car out of the race.
00:15:16So, Nigel Mansell will not become a three-time winner
00:15:21in 1985 on the Formula One circuit.
00:15:23He is already out of the race.
00:15:25There's Martin Brundle in one of the Tyrrells
00:15:27running very slowly down the straightaway.
00:15:30It looks like he is still under power,
00:15:32but the car very, very slow.
00:15:34Martin Brundle, car number three.
00:15:36Martin, of course, from Great Britain.
00:15:38The lead continues to be held by KK Rosberg from Finland.
00:15:42Running in second position is Ayrton Senna.
00:15:44Third is Elio de Angelis,
00:15:46and Alain Prost, the world champion, is running fourth.
00:15:50Back with more right after this.
00:15:57Bob Jenkins and John Bisognano,
00:15:59back with ESPN's delayed coverage of the Australian Grand Prix,
00:16:02where KK Rosberg leads at the present time.
00:16:05We go back into the car of Patrick Tambay
00:16:08and see again that Nigel Mansell was forced off course
00:16:12by Ayrton Senna in the early going,
00:16:15and Nigel Mansell has come into the pits.
00:16:17He has retired from competition.
00:16:20That's definitely put Nigel out of the race.
00:16:23He has not come out of the pits from that pit stop.
00:16:26They were looking at the left rear,
00:16:29and that's where the contact took place.
00:16:31There must be some piece of suspension.
00:16:34You know, we had this in our camera earlier
00:16:37in our Formula One telecast.
00:16:39I believe Germany was the first place that we saw it,
00:16:42but they obviously have perfected this thing,
00:16:44and the shots that we are getting from Patrick Tambay's car
00:16:47over his right shoulder are just tremendous.
00:16:49You can see at that point he was over the curb a little bit,
00:16:52the car bouncing. In fact, he loses a position.
00:16:54Great coverage from the in-car camera of Patrick Tambay.
00:16:59Unfortunately, Pierre Luigi Martini in the minority
00:17:03has spun off course
00:17:05and is getting some assistance from the corner workers.
00:17:08It seems like he's still running.
00:17:10Now he's motioning.
00:17:11They really shouldn't push him back onto this track.
00:17:14They aren't allowed to really give him a push start.
00:17:16They're only allowed to push him out of harm's way.
00:17:20He may have had the motor running. We don't know.
00:17:23There is Ayrton Senna running behind the leader, K.K. Rosberg,
00:17:27as they come down the straightaway once again
00:17:29with Michele Alboreto still running in third position.
00:17:33Alboreto has had a tremendously tough second half of the season
00:17:38after being in contention for the world title for several races.
00:17:43He had some bad luck and now, of course,
00:17:46is going to finish second in the standings to Alain Prost.
00:17:50Once again, we saw Martin Brundle running very slowly on the racetrack
00:17:54but still out there.
00:17:55K.K. Rosberg turned the fastest lap
00:17:57and Martin Brundle is turning the slowest.
00:17:59You notice when he came around the first time,
00:18:01he was just opposite the pits going very slow,
00:18:03so he's trying to make a full rotation around
00:18:05and probably get back to the pits.
00:18:07That's why you see those white flags waving.
00:18:09That means that there's a slower vehicle ahead
00:18:11and the driver should take caution.
00:18:16In the streets of Adelaide, Australia,
00:18:19and you really, as we look at this course,
00:18:21it looks like they have done a tremendous job
00:18:23in combining street course with a section of racetrack
00:18:29that they constructed in a horse racing facility here in this city.
00:18:34The actual design and layout of the track
00:18:36was assisted by, of course,
00:18:38the world champion Australian driver, Jack Brabham,
00:18:41but the actual physical putting up of the walls
00:18:44and ensuring that the surface itself is qualified
00:18:47for this type of racing was done by the city.
00:18:50The city wanted it to be a city project.
00:18:53It's initiating a great deal of pride,
00:18:55both locally and worldwide.
00:18:57So for a first event,
00:18:59it must be given a great deal of reward
00:19:02for everything going so smoothly.
00:19:04The promoter of the event is actually listed
00:19:06as the government of Australia.
00:19:08There is no individual or even major company
00:19:11involved in the promotion,
00:19:13although they do have a sponsorship on this event
00:19:15from the Mitsubishi company.
00:19:18Most Grand Prix's these days do need a commercial sponsor
00:19:21over and above the promotion and payment of entrance fees,
00:19:25but Ayrton Senna is certainly getting closer to Keke Rosberg.
00:19:28I think he's catching him under braking.
00:19:31Now, the Honda has been going through
00:19:34a great development program over the last couple months.
00:19:37The problem was when the engine first came out,
00:19:39it had a very narrow rev band.
00:19:41That means that the power of the engine
00:19:43could only be transmitted to the ground
00:19:45through a few thousand RPM,
00:19:47but the engineers in Japan have done a very good job
00:19:50of expanding this rev band
00:19:52and therefore down the straightaway.
00:19:54What used to dominate Formula One is the Renault,
00:19:57is now being totally dominated by the Honda power car.
00:20:01And here we have Jack Lafitte
00:20:03into the pits with the Liget car.
00:20:06Jack has been having some very good races.
00:20:09The last few events he's been on the winner's podium
00:20:12three or four times this year.
00:20:14He's the oldest driver in Formula One at the moment.
00:20:17I'd like to see Jack.
00:20:19It doesn't look like a very quick pit stop,
00:20:21but he's not getting out of the car.
00:20:23Well, they are changing both front tires on that car,
00:20:26but they're taking their time in doing it.
00:20:28Jack Lafitte started this race in 20th position
00:20:31and is in for an early pit stop.
00:20:34As we go back to the racing,
00:20:36here is 3rd place Michele Alboreto
00:20:38followed by Gerhard Berger,
00:20:40who has passed Alain Prost,
00:20:42and Gerhard Berger is now in 4th,
00:20:44Prost back to 5th.
00:20:46It's incredible to think that Gerhard Berger,
00:20:48another Austrian actually,
00:20:51was in a very serious road accident last year
00:20:54and was actually in intensive care
00:20:57as late as this January.
00:20:59And here he is,
00:21:01holding down one of the very coveted
00:21:03first six places in a Formula One race.
00:21:06Only some 9 or 10 months after that
00:21:09horrendous road car accident.
00:21:11We had a quick shot there of the rear wing of Jack Lafitte.
00:21:14He has gone back out onto the course,
00:21:16so Lafitte rejoins the hunt.
00:21:18Following Alain Prost here,
00:21:20who is running in 5th position,
00:21:226th is Mark Schur,
00:21:24and then in 7th place is Elio de Angelis
00:21:27in the other Lotus.
00:21:29Michele Alboreto running in 3rd place in the Ferrari.
00:21:32Remember, the Ferrari very much
00:21:34in contention for the Constructors' Championship,
00:21:37but they do need good finishes
00:21:39from both Alboreto and Stefan Johansson.
00:21:42There's also a bit of extra competition
00:21:44between Michele Alboreto and Alain Prost.
00:21:47Alboreto finishing 2nd
00:21:50in the World Championship to him
00:21:52as far as driver's points.
00:21:54Prost having a very serious look
00:21:56both left and right around Berger.
00:21:58I don't think he's going to be able to do it this time.
00:22:01But Alboreto certainly wants to try and finish ahead of Prost
00:22:04to at least have that one claim to fame in the last race.
00:22:09The car right ahead of Michele Alboreto
00:22:13is Jacques Lafitte as he has made an early pit stop
00:22:16and gotten back out on the racetrack.
00:22:20He continues to be held by K.K. Rosberg
00:22:23with Senna running in 2nd position.
00:22:26Then Michele Alboreto.
00:22:28There are the first two.
00:22:30As you can see, Senna a little loose there.
00:22:32In fact, it appears he's having some
00:22:35either handling problems or the power
00:22:37just getting to the racetrack
00:22:39that he talked about in his interview with Jackie Stewart.
00:22:42Well, it's hard to determine if Senna is having handling problems
00:22:46just because of his driving style.
00:22:48Sometimes the tackler's style alone
00:22:51is enough to make people think there are handling problems.
00:22:57K.K. Rosberg, the leader
00:22:59with Ayrton Senna right behind him
00:23:02then about 2 or 3 seconds
00:23:04before we get back to the 3rd place car
00:23:06of Michele Alboreto.
00:23:09So we will continue with our delayed coverage
00:23:11of the Australian Grand Prix here on ESPN
00:23:14right after these messages.
00:23:15Stay with us.
00:23:25Back at the Australian Grand Prix
00:23:28K.K. Rosberg continues to lead
00:23:30Ayrton Senna running 2nd
00:23:31Alboreto is 3rd
00:23:32Prost 4th
00:23:33Mark Schur is 5th
00:23:35and Elio De Angelis has moved to 6th
00:23:37Now Gerhard Berger has begun to fall back
00:23:40he was running as high as 5th
00:23:43make that 4th
00:23:44however he is falling back
00:23:46he's still out there on the course
00:23:47but Berger having some problems here in the Arrows
00:23:51The Arrows team has really come along
00:23:53in the last couple of events
00:23:55Jackie Oliver
00:23:57a very well known Grand Prix racer in the 60's
00:23:59has done a great job of bringing this team
00:24:01the BMW powered team
00:24:03right to the forefront
00:24:04working on much less budget than some of the other teams
00:24:07he's done a great job of managing funds
00:24:10and his team throughout this particular year
00:24:12some close racing here for 3rd position
00:24:15as Prost is now right up on the rear wing
00:24:18of Michele Alboreto
00:24:19as a matter of fact 3, 4, 5 and 6 here
00:24:22running nose to tail
00:24:23Alboreto followed by Prost and Schur
00:24:25then De Angelis
00:24:26now it's Alain Prost moving to the inside
00:24:29and passing Michele Alboreto
00:24:32so Alain Prost moves into 3rd
00:24:34and Mark Schur now right up on the back bumper
00:24:37or the back wing I should say
00:24:39of Michele Alboreto
00:24:40and Schur goes inside
00:24:42outbrakes and Schur also picks up the position
00:24:45Alboreto falling back
00:24:46could it be the car
00:24:47or is everybody else just standing on the gas here
00:24:50well coming out of that last turn
00:24:52where Prost went by
00:24:54he did not use all of the circuit
00:24:55I don't know if he missed a gear there or what
00:24:57but his full inertia
00:24:59down that straightaway
00:25:00was much less than it should be
00:25:02and Prost really blew him off
00:25:04and the Ferrari motor should be able to
00:25:07withstand the tagged turbo
00:25:09going down that straightaway
00:25:10but both the BMW of Mark Schur
00:25:13and Alain Prost
00:25:15one got by on power
00:25:16and the other one got by on braking
00:25:17so we're not sure exactly what happened
00:25:19these are two cars coming out of the pits
00:25:21and I did see a Barkley on the back wing
00:25:23it might be Gerhard Berger coming out of the pits
00:25:25he certainly disappeared from the front group there
00:25:28well an impressive drive so far
00:25:30for Mark Schur
00:25:31in that number 8 Brabham car
00:25:33he started this race in 6th position
00:25:35and has now moved up to 4th
00:25:37and is doing battle with the
00:25:39world champion this year
00:25:41there is no definite commitment
00:25:43I understand
00:25:44on behalf of Brabham to Schur
00:25:46for next year
00:25:47but it would seem that it would be a wise decision
00:25:49if they signed him
00:25:50he has been very impressive
00:25:51in some races this year
00:25:53well Mark was actually let go
00:25:54by the Barkley Arrows team
00:25:56at the end of this year
00:25:57and he started out the season without a drive
00:25:59and then a seat opened up
00:26:01in the Brabham team
00:26:02and BMW
00:26:03asked
00:26:04in the pits
00:26:05we do have one of the Ferraris there
00:26:07and we also have Patrick Tambay
00:26:09in the pits
00:26:10with the in-car camera
00:26:11number 15
00:26:12that's one of the most frustrating views
00:26:14a driver has
00:26:15sitting still
00:26:17you can see how dangerous
00:26:19the pit row can be
00:26:20these cars can accelerate
00:26:22from 0 to 60 in 3.2 seconds
00:26:24and therefore
00:26:26it's a very dangerous situation
00:26:29I was saying about Mark Schur
00:26:31he did pick up his drive
00:26:33and has certainly earned the right to keep it
00:26:37so Patrick Tambay
00:26:38with the in-car camera
00:26:39back out on the racetrack
00:26:40right behind him
00:26:41is Ivan Capelli
00:26:43in the number 4 Tyrrell
00:26:44and behind Capelli
00:26:46is Tao Fabi
00:26:47now both Fabi
00:26:49and Capelli
00:26:50started at the rear of the field
00:26:53and Patrick Tambay
00:26:55comes out right ahead of them
00:26:57after having made a pit stop
00:26:59so the race continues
00:27:00and K.K. Rosberg
00:27:01continues to set the pace
00:27:03Senna is still running second
00:27:04back with more
00:27:05from the Australian Grand Prix
00:27:11Adelaide, Victoria
00:27:12in South Australia
00:27:14is the scene of today's
00:27:15Australian Grand Prix
00:27:17the first ever
00:27:18points paying
00:27:19Formula 1 race
00:27:20held in this country
00:27:21and there is a
00:27:224.131 second difference
00:27:25between the later
00:27:26K.K. Rosberg
00:27:27shown here in the
00:27:28Williams Honda car number 6
00:27:29and second place
00:27:32that of course is
00:27:33Ayrton Senna
00:27:34the pole sitter
00:27:35in today's event
00:27:38K.K. Rosberg
00:27:39is showing a little bit
00:27:40of tire wear there
00:27:41and here we have
00:27:42Alan Jones
00:27:43the only Australian
00:27:44in the race
00:27:45with the Beatrice
00:27:46heart-powered car
00:27:47Alan qualified well
00:27:48he was the fastest
00:27:49of all the
00:27:50heart-powered cars
00:27:51this is of course
00:27:52the only American entrant
00:27:53with the Australian
00:27:54driver
00:27:55Patrick Tambay
00:27:56will be driving for
00:27:57the Beatrice team
00:27:58next year
00:27:59when they have
00:28:00the Ford Turbo
00:28:01now that engine
00:28:02will be in the car
00:28:03and running
00:28:04the last week in November
00:28:05or the first week
00:28:06in December
00:28:07and everyone including
00:28:08Alan Jones
00:28:09and Patrick Tambay
00:28:10are looking forward
00:28:11to the Ford Turbo
00:28:12making its entrance
00:28:13into Formula 1
00:28:14via the
00:28:15Carl Haas
00:28:16managed
00:28:17Teddy Mayer
00:28:18managed
00:28:19American entrant
00:28:20through Beatrice racing
00:28:21well a lot of
00:28:22testing I expect
00:28:23can be
00:28:24forthcoming here
00:28:25on this car
00:28:26because
00:28:27they hope to do well
00:28:28in their first
00:28:29full season
00:28:30next year
00:28:31there's KK Rosberg
00:28:32the leader
00:28:33as he continues
00:28:34to move
00:28:35flawlessly
00:28:36around this
00:28:3713 turn
00:28:382.35 mile course
00:28:40here in Australia
00:28:41passing
00:28:42Pierluigi Martini
00:28:43once again
00:28:44who got off course
00:28:45earlier in this race
00:28:46but
00:28:47was
00:28:48helped back
00:28:49on to the circuit
00:28:50and is still out there
00:28:51he is
00:28:52however being
00:28:53lapped by the leader
00:28:54seems like he must have
00:28:55gotten
00:28:56a little bit of a
00:28:57friendly push there
00:28:58from the
00:28:59friendly
00:29:00Aussies
00:29:01in South Australia
00:29:02because he was able
00:29:03to
00:29:04rejoin the race
00:29:05after that little
00:29:06excursion
00:29:07into the sand
00:29:08there you get
00:29:09an interval
00:29:10between first
00:29:11and second
00:29:12again it's about
00:29:135 seconds
00:29:14between Rosberg
00:29:15and Ayrton Senna
00:29:16Rosberg
00:29:17there are the standings
00:29:18by the way
00:29:19Rosberg
00:29:20is in
00:29:214th
00:29:22DeAngelo
00:29:23is 5th
00:29:24and Niki Lauda
00:29:25now moves up
00:29:26into 6th
00:29:27position
00:29:28those are the
00:29:29standings after
00:29:3015 laps
00:29:31here on the
00:29:32Australian Grand Prix
00:29:33we'll take this break
00:29:34and be right back
00:29:35with more action
00:29:36from Adelaide

00:29:53is Alan Jones
00:29:54the Australian
00:29:55driver in the
00:29:56Beatrice Lola
00:29:57car number
00:29:5833
00:29:59as he is
00:30:00we indicated
00:30:01earlier
00:30:02qualified rather
00:30:03well at
00:30:0419th position
00:30:05and is doing
00:30:06quite well
00:30:07in that
00:30:08hard powered
00:30:09car
00:30:10there's
00:30:11Pier Carlo
00:30:12or rather
00:30:13Pier Luigi
00:30:14at work
00:30:15very quick
00:30:16pit stop there
00:30:17in the
00:30:18Benetton car
00:30:19interesting
00:30:20Benetton has
00:30:21actually bought
00:30:22the Tolman team
00:30:23so here we have
00:30:24a sponsor
00:30:25again somewhat
00:30:26like Beatrice
00:30:27a sponsor
00:30:28actually buying
00:30:29the team

00:30:36of the
00:30:37Liege
00:30:38not quite sure
00:30:39if that's
00:30:40Streiff
00:30:41or Jacques
00:30:42Lafitte
00:30:43great view
00:30:44on the inside
00:30:45passing down
00:30:46shifting
00:30:47a bit of a wiggle
00:30:48there
00:30:49there's how close
00:30:50they were
00:30:51Patrick
00:30:52accelerating out of
00:30:53the corner
00:30:54trying to get the
00:30:55power to the
00:30:56ground
00:30:57this is a great
00:30:58view
00:30:59this is exactly
00:31:00what it looks
00:31:01like
00:31:02from the
00:31:03driver's
00:31:04own viewpoint
00:31:05that was
00:31:06Philip
00:31:07Philippe Streiff
00:31:08that he passed
00:31:09there in that
00:31:10nice move
00:31:11going into the
00:31:12front straightaway
00:31:13here
00:31:14riding with
00:31:15Patrick
00:31:16Tambay
00:31:17down the
00:31:18gearbox
00:31:19fantastic sound
00:31:20here also
00:31:21drivers are so
00:31:22aware of the
00:31:23sound
00:31:24everything is so
00:31:25acute you can
00:31:26virtually hear
00:31:27valves opening
00:31:28and closing
00:31:29gearboxes
00:31:30being worked
00:31:31synchro
00:31:32measures
00:31:33this is so
00:31:34beautiful
00:31:35it should be
00:31:36just left alone
00:31:37Patrick
00:31:38Tambay
00:31:39already has a
00:31:40commitment for
00:31:411986
00:31:42he will be
00:31:43joining
00:31:44Alan Jones
00:31:45and the Beatrice
00:31:46team
00:31:47as you
00:31:48indicated
00:31:49John
00:31:50the sound
00:31:51is so
00:31:52tremendous
00:31:53of the
00:31:54gearboxes
00:31:55being worked
00:31:56and the
00:31:57gears being
00:31:58shifted
00:31:59really some
00:32:00outstanding
00:32:01shots and
00:32:02noise there
00:32:03from Patrick
00:32:04Tambay's
00:32:05cockpit
00:32:06KK
00:32:07Rosberg
00:32:08still leads
00:32:09though
00:32:10in such a
00:32:11realistic way
00:32:12and Rosberg
00:32:13has once again
00:32:14opened up some
00:32:15daylight between
00:32:16himself and
00:32:17Ayrton
00:32:18Senneson
00:32:19and not even in
00:32:20this shot now
00:32:21as he has
00:32:22dropped back just
00:32:23a little bit
00:32:24there he is
00:32:25coming out of
00:32:26the corner
00:32:27but KK
00:32:28Rosberg
00:32:29moving flawlessly
00:32:30here in
00:32:31Australia
00:32:32and appearing to
00:32:33be on his way
00:32:34to victory
00:32:35although we
00:32:36have a lot of
00:32:37laps remaining
00:32:38here in the
00:32:39race
00:32:40tonight on ESPN
00:32:41at 10 o'clock
00:32:42eastern time
00:32:43America's Cup
00:32:4487 bring back
00:32:45the Cup
00:32:46although the race
00:32:47isn't for a
00:32:48couple of years
00:32:49there are a lot of
00:32:50preparations going
00:32:51underway
00:32:52millions of
00:32:53dollars being
00:32:54spent on
00:32:55development
00:32:56and we will have
00:32:57the first in
00:32:58several programs
00:32:59here on ESPN
00:33:00tonight at 10
00:33:01o'clock
00:33:02regarding the
00:33:03America's Cup
00:33:0487
00:33:05coming back
00:33:06out of that
00:33:07break we saw
00:33:08that Alan
00:33:09Jones was in
00:33:10the pits with
00:33:11the
00:33:12heart
00:33:13unfortunately they
00:33:14were taking the
00:33:15top body panel
00:33:16off the car
00:33:17which means
00:33:18there's something
00:33:19more serious
00:33:20than just a
00:33:21tire change
00:33:22but Jonesy
00:33:23was not
00:33:24getting out of
00:33:25the car
00:33:26so in his
00:33:27homeland here
00:33:28we hope that
00:33:29he can rejoin
00:33:30the rest of
00:33:31the field
00:33:32I would think
00:33:33that KK
00:33:34Rosberg would
00:33:35have a little
00:33:36bit of incentive
00:33:37for the
00:33:38Williams team
00:33:39he has won
00:33:40many races for
00:33:41Williams and
00:33:42would probably
00:33:43like to put another
00:33:44one under his
00:33:45belt before he
00:33:46switches next
00:33:47year to the
00:33:48McLaren team
00:33:49there are the
00:33:50positions after
00:33:5120 laps
00:33:52Rosberg,
00:33:53Senna,
00:33:54Sur,
00:33:55Prost,
00:33:56Lauda and
00:33:57Alboreto
00:33:58passing here
00:33:59coming up the
00:34:00inside that is
00:34:01one of the
00:34:02liges going
00:34:03around I
00:34:04think the
00:34:05back marker
00:34:06Philippe Streif
00:34:07in that car
00:34:08they are grouped
00:34:09amongst the
00:34:10leaders but
00:34:11they are not
00:34:12on the same
00:34:13well they might
00:34:14be on the same
00:34:15lap but they
00:34:16are back markers
00:34:17KK
00:34:18Rosberg has led
00:34:19all the way
00:34:20so far
00:34:21he completed
00:34:22the first lap
00:34:23in the lead and
00:34:24has been there
00:34:25ever since
00:34:26a little over
00:34:2720 laps are
00:34:28completed here
00:34:29on the Australian
00:34:30Grand Prix and
00:34:31we will be right
00:34:32back
00:34:36back for the
00:34:37Australian Grand Prix
00:34:38and Patrick
00:34:39Tambay has
00:34:40dropped out of
00:34:41the race and
00:34:42unfortunately his
00:34:43demise from the
00:34:44event means that
00:34:45we will have no
00:34:46more of those
00:34:47great shots that
00:34:48we got from
00:34:49above his right
00:34:50shoulder with the
00:34:51in car camera
00:34:52Patrick Tambay
00:34:53retires from the
00:34:54Australian Grand
00:34:55Prix
00:34:56and that will be
00:34:57the last time you
00:34:58see Patrick Tambay
00:34:59in a Renault
00:35:00powered car in a
00:35:01Renault chassis
00:35:02also the last time
00:35:03that you see that
00:35:04particular Renault
00:35:05ever in racing
00:35:06because Renault
00:35:07is going to be
00:35:08pulling out the
00:35:09Formula 1 next year
00:35:10as a manufacturer
00:35:11of chassis
00:35:12they will be
00:35:13supplying engines
00:35:14to several teams
00:35:15but this is the
00:35:16last race for
00:35:17Renault cars
00:35:18in Formula 1
00:35:19and we have had
00:35:20a change of
00:35:21position here
00:35:22in the last lap
00:35:23or two as
00:35:24Mark Suhr
00:35:25has passed
00:35:26Alain Prost
00:35:27who are now in
00:35:28third and
00:35:29Prost in
00:35:30fourth position
00:35:31so Mark Suhr
00:35:32in that Brabham
00:35:33continues to look
00:35:34very strong
00:35:35here in the
00:35:36early going of
00:35:37the Australian
00:35:38Grand Prix
00:35:39you can't be
00:35:40more pleased
00:35:41Mark if you
00:35:42had to pick
00:35:43out of a crowd
00:35:44of 100 people
00:35:45if you had to
00:35:46pick the
00:35:47Formula 1 driver
00:35:48out of it
00:35:49he would be
00:35:50one of the
00:35:51last people
00:35:52you would
00:35:53ever pick
00:35:54he likes
00:35:55horses
00:35:56he has a
00:35:57place just
00:35:58outside of
00:35:59Basel
00:36:00Switzerland
00:36:01he bought a
00:36:02ranch down
00:36:03in the
00:36:04Alps
00:36:05of
00:36:06Switzerland
00:36:07and his
00:36:08horses
00:36:09and the
00:36:10Grand Prix
00:36:11scene are
00:36:12probably the
00:36:13two greatest
00:36:14polarized
00:36:15environments
00:36:16that someone
00:36:17could maintain
00:36:18a living in
00:36:19although his
00:36:20best finish
00:36:21in the
00:36:22Formula 1
00:36:23race was
00:36:24his second
00:36:25his best finish
00:36:26this year
00:36:27has been a
00:36:28fourth that
00:36:29was in the
00:36:30Italian
00:36:31Grand Prix
00:36:32at Monza
00:36:33Mark
00:36:34Schur
00:36:35from
00:36:36Switzerland
00:36:37the Brabham
00:36:38BMW
00:36:39and here he
00:36:40has turned the
00:36:41fastest time
00:36:42of the race
00:36:43so far
00:36:44a little over
00:36:4598 miles
00:36:46an hour
00:36:47so that car
00:36:48working well
00:36:49for him
00:36:50I think that
00:36:51might be his
00:36:52fastest lap
00:36:53ever
00:36:54he was in
00:36:55second place
00:36:56when he
00:36:57dropped out
00:36:58in Brands
00:36:59Hatch
00:37:00he may have
00:37:01been in
00:37:02third
00:37:03and fourth
00:37:04place
00:37:05battle
00:37:06between
00:37:07Mark Schur
00:37:08and
00:37:09Alain Prost
00:37:10now there
00:37:11is
00:37:12Alan Jones
00:37:13who has
00:37:14come into
00:37:15the pits
00:37:16another time
00:37:17but
00:37:18is back
00:37:19out in

00:37:21he's

00:37:26he's
