00:00:00Only 12th fastest in the warm-up, which is a good pointer for fourth, because in the warm-up half-hour earlier on today, the cars went out on full tanks and race rubber, not the very soft qualifying tyres, and it's significant that Reutemann was fastest, Piquet was second fastest, Alan Jones was third fastest, and the fastest turbo, that of Alain Cross, was fourth.
00:00:26Now there is the world championship position, as I was just talking about, with Carlos Reutemann, nine points for a win, don't forget, so Reutemann has just got a six-point lead over Nelson Piquet, and you get six points for second place, then Jacques Lafitte in third place.
00:00:42A big crowd, not as big as we've seen in the past, which is rather surprising, because the conditions could hardly be better.
00:00:49It's pretty good for the non-turbocharged cars, because Zandvoort is literally at sea level, so the turbos do not get the advantage that they get at altitude circuits, like Kyle Army in South Africa, and Seltveig in Austria.
00:01:06And also, the conditions are not too hot today, so that also benefits the normally aspirated engines.
00:01:14Well, with me now, as ever, the man who won the 1975 and 1976 Grand Prixs, and as you look at the map, and they go round on the warm-up lap, James Hunt.
00:01:25Well, there go the cars round the Tarzan corner, that's the second gear hairpin at the end of the main straight, they come into that at about 180 miles an hour, breakdown to slow hairpin, little right-hand flick there, they go through that third gear, and then down is the one called the Hunsrug, which is the slowest corner on the circuit, the left-hander, just coming out of the Hunsrug, and that's the sort of tight little complex round the back of the pits after the start-finish line.
00:01:49And now it opens out, these bends are all completely flat out, here, where you see Prost going away up the hill, over the brow, and then he gets on the brakes, the car goes light over the brow, and you see him coming into view now, down through a long sweeping right-hander, definitely the best corner on the circuit, difficult one, taking it about fourth gear, very quick, down a short straight now, they then go round left-hander, which is flat out, but they've got to get onto the brakes a bit for the new.
00:02:19New slow corner put in there, then back through the fast sweeping corners through the dunes, again, all flat out, and very quick indeed, they're up to about 165, 170 miles an hour, and they brake very hard as they come down to the new chicane that was put in, well, say, new, nearly 10 years ago, I think, to slow the cars down, again, to go through a right and then a left.
00:02:43Again, they take that in second gear, possibly, and then away they accelerate, well, they're not accelerating now, of course, because they're on their warming up lap, and they're coming towards the end of the lap, so the pole man Prost is bringing the field slowly in, so they bunch up, he doesn't have to wait too, the front markers don't have to wait too long for the back markers when they get on the grid.
00:03:02That's the final corner, you see the cars in now, fast sweeping right-hander, not quite flat out, depending on how well your car is set up, very difficult and very important, because that corner dominates your speed all the way down the straight,
00:03:16and if you do it wrong, you slow down the straight, and other cars can pass you, and obviously it hurts your lap time a lot, so that's a very, very important corner, that last one, onto the straight.
00:03:25Fields weaving about a little bit, just warming up their tires, get a bit of energy into the tires to bring the rubber up to working temperature, these big, bald racing tires get very soft and sticky when they're hot, but they're most difficult to drive on when they're cold, and, of course, have very much less grip.
00:03:43Coming up towards the start-finish line, so I'll hand you back to Murray Walker.
00:03:47And the British starter, Derek Ongaro, ready to activate the light from red to green, and it's very, very interesting to watch the turbocharged cars.
00:03:56I've said in the past, and I'll say again, that they are slower off the line, so watch carefully the car behind René Arnoux, who is on the left of your picture.
00:04:05Number one is the reigning world champion, Alan Jones, four fastest in practice.
00:04:09On his left and your right, tucked up underneath the rear wing of pole position man Alain Prost's turbocharged Renault, is Nelson Piquet.
00:04:19That's number five, the Brazilian, of course, who finished in first place here last year and is second in the world championship.
00:04:27There is the sign that the course is clear, the lights are red and green, and it's go for the gun score three.
00:04:33Crossed away well into the lead, Arnoux in second place, and that is Villeneuve, who has spun off at half-hand corner.
00:04:45And before he has even reached the first corner on the first lap, Gilles Villeneuve looks as though he's been punted off the course.
00:04:53The Renaults are in first and second position, with Prost leading Arnoux in second place, and then Jones and Piquet.
00:05:01Well, I didn't see exactly what happened there with Villeneuve, but Villeneuve made a very good start from well down the field.
00:05:08He's in about 10 foot, 10 to 12 place on the grid, and I think the starter threw the green very, very quickly for them.
00:05:14He's supposed to wait six seconds. That definitely wasn't six seconds after the red light goes on.
00:05:19And I think Villeneuve was ready, made a good start, and of course he was therefore moving before the others, moving faster,
00:05:24and obviously was fighting to find his way through, but hopefully we'll see a replay in a minute.
00:05:29Well, I don't know if the Renaults are operating to a race plan, but already Prost is pulling out the lead, Arnoux is definitely out.
00:05:36There is the replay.
00:05:38Yes, well, unfortunately, they cut that replay a little bit too late for us to see what actually happened.
00:05:42And they didn't slow it down, so hopefully we'll see another one a bit later, but back to the race right now.
00:05:49And we'll see whether Gilles Villeneuve comes through at the end of the first lap.
00:05:54And here is the end of the first lap with 71 to go, and it is Prost in the lead from Arnoux.
00:06:00And then it's Alan Jones in third position with Piquet fourth, and Jacques Lafitte as they go into the right-hander at Tarzan,
00:06:09which is where Andrea de Cesaris spun off in practice.
00:06:12And by the way, de Cesaris in the second of the two Marlborough MP4s is a non-starter,
00:06:18and his place has been taken by Michele Alvareto, who was 35th fastest in practice.
00:06:23Arnoux second then, Jones third, TK fourth, Lafitte fifth, Reutemann sixth,
00:06:28and there it was either Andretti or Giacomelli in the Alfa Romeo with a very bent and twisted front wing,
00:06:35which of course will badly upset the aerodynamics of the car, make the handling very difficult.
00:06:40But Prost looks as though he is already stamping his personality on the race,
00:06:46as in lap two he goes through the Marlborough Bacht, that's the new fast chicane,
00:06:52and then on his way down towards Panorama, which is where a lot of well-meaning graffiti
00:06:59had to be cleaned off the court before practice could begin on the first day,
00:07:04because it would have interfered with adherence, and it's still Prost-Renault on lap two,
00:07:11with our new Renault in second position on lap two,
00:07:15and we are now obviously looking down at a replay of the start,
00:07:18and you can see how the two Renault's accelerated away, and watch for Wielderberg.
00:07:24Yes, looking at that, Murray, I think it was the most unfortunate accident.
00:07:29Wielderberg was going quicker than those two cars, and he went to go between them,
00:07:33which seemed to be a reasonable thing to do, because there was a gap there when he started the manoeuvre,
00:07:37and the two of them just both moved together at the same time,
00:07:40and it did look to me like that was very much an accident.
00:07:44I couldn't see who the other two cars were, but I don't think that it was reasonable to expect
00:07:47that they could both see him at the right time beside them,
00:07:51so I think that's just an unfortunate accident in the way that they can happen at the start.
00:07:57Well, you saw that, one of the toolbox in the pits, I don't know which one it was,
00:08:01I'm frantically looking down pit lane now to see if I can identify,
00:08:04but I can't see the car number, so I don't know, and meantime, Pironi is in the pits,
00:08:10so it's a disastrous race for Ferrari already, with Villeneuve off on the first lap,
00:08:15Pironi in on the third lap, and Pross is still leading with Arnoux,
00:08:21and a bunch right up behind René Arnoux in second place,
00:08:26led by Alan Jones, the world champion, and the winners.
00:08:28Look at it, and it's Pico, it's still in fourth position,
00:08:31Jack Nafique, so it must have been Torme into the pits.
00:08:34Yes, well, it's, as usual, apart from the Renault's bump,
00:08:39we've got all the relevant people in the world championship pulling up,
00:08:43and Jones has pulled out behind Arnoux,
00:08:46and amazingly enough, he's got back to him down the straight,
00:08:49Jones is through it, Pico is having a go as well.
00:08:52But Pico can't quite do it, well, that is a turn up,
00:08:54that Jones in the Williams has managed to actually pass,
00:08:58as I said earlier, that corner on the straight is very critical,
00:09:01Jones is obviously quicker through it than Arnoux,
00:09:04but to do that is really most impressive for straight-line speed.
00:09:08So Jones is now in a very enviable position as far as PK and the fleet are concerned,
00:09:13because he's got, he's managed to deal with one of the turbos,
00:09:16he's pulling away a huge lead already,
00:09:17Arnoux's undoubtedly holding up the other cars behind him,
00:09:21who haven't got the same straight-line speed, there goes Pross,
00:09:24Jones will now, I'm quite sure, catch Pross pretty quickly,
00:09:27but it'll be interesting to see if he can do the same thing again
00:09:30and actually get past Pross in the same way that he passed Arnoux.
00:09:33That was, I was quite surprised to see him be able to come alongside
00:09:36and then hold it down the straight and actually, in fact, edge ahead.
00:09:41Well, now, listeners to Channel 9 in Australia will justifiably be all agog,
00:09:46because the world champions got ahead of Arnoux and PK,
00:09:50when PK was behind him, he's got ahead of Arnoux,
00:09:53and now, can he close the gap between himself and Alain Prost,
00:09:57the Frenchman who is leading as they go out of Panorama,
00:10:02and they are now on lap four, out of 72, across the line,
00:10:07and the gap between Prost and Alan Jones,
00:10:11with now PK coming up to take Arnoux.
00:10:14Now, this is very significant indeed,
00:10:16indeed, and Jacques Laffitte having a go on the inside of Tarzan.
00:10:20So, Arnoux then is down to fourth position behind his teammate,
00:10:25the leader, Prost, behind Alan Jones in second place,
00:10:29PK, the new third-place Le Mans that we're looking at now,
00:10:32who was, of course, very, very quick in practice.
00:10:36Nelson PK is the third-fastest in practice
00:10:39behind the two turbocharged Renaults.
00:10:41By the way, Nigel Mansell has disappeared out of the race this early.
00:10:47John Watson is in eighth position,
00:10:49behind Mario Andretti, who is seventh,
00:10:52Carlos Reutemann, who is sixth,
00:10:54Jett Napiet, who is fifth,
00:10:56Nelson Piquet, who is in fourth position,
00:10:59René Arnoux, who is third,
00:11:00and we are looking at the second-place man,
00:11:02Alan Jones, with the leader, Alain Prost,
00:11:04and the gap between Prost, the leader,
00:11:07and Alan Jones at the end of the previous lap,
00:11:11at the end of lap four,
00:11:12was 2.94 seconds,
00:11:15and we wait as PK is easing away
00:11:19just a foot at a time
00:11:21from René Arnoux, the first,
00:11:23the new fourth-place man,
00:11:25for Prost and Jones,
00:11:27and here they come.
00:11:282.94 seconds was the gap,
00:11:30and the gap now, as Alan Jones passes me,
00:11:33is 2.77 seconds.
00:11:44Hold on to that, there is Prost circulating now.
00:11:47Reasonably comfortable,
00:11:48Jones isn't catching him that quickly,
00:11:50but Prost will certainly have to work very hard
00:11:52to just maintain that,
00:11:54that small lead that he's got,
00:11:56let alone build it.
00:11:57Alan Jones won the Dutch Grand Prix in 1979,
00:12:03and he really, there's Derek Daly,
00:12:04and he's obviously out of the race, of course,
00:12:06I said he had come in,
00:12:07we didn't see him come in,
00:12:08but the march,
00:12:10the John McDonnell run march,
00:12:12came into the pits,
00:12:14and Prost has just gone par,
00:12:15completing the lap,
00:12:16and the gap is 2.93,
00:12:19it was, on the previous lap,
00:12:203.04 seconds,
00:12:22and before that, it was 2.94 seconds,
00:12:25so the gap is being maintained,
00:12:28I should think almost at the nearest inch between,
00:12:31from the leader,
00:12:32Jones, in second place,
00:12:34and Jones is at the corner now,
00:12:36where he made his disastrous mistake,
00:12:38just there, last year,
00:12:40when he put the car,
00:12:41about a foot too much to the right,
00:12:43rode up on the ridged concrete curbing,
00:12:46which lines parts of the circuit,
00:12:48dropped his right-hand skirt,
00:12:50between the front and rear wheels,
00:12:53into the dirt and the grass,
00:12:55ripped it off,
00:12:57and then had to come into the pits,
00:12:59to have that skirt replaced,
00:13:01and finally finished well down,
00:13:03in fact out of the points,
00:13:05and Alan Jones,
00:13:06in the world championship at the moment,
00:13:08is in 4th place,
00:13:10the man from Glenburn,
00:13:12in Victoria, Australia,
00:13:13and he really does need the points,
00:13:17he won at Long Beach,
00:13:19and then he was in 2nd place in Brazil,
00:13:23now that's the position after 5 laps,
00:13:26and you can see 2.8 seconds,
00:13:29is the gap,
00:13:30I don't know why they've got Alan Jones,
00:13:33in the lead in that situation,
00:13:35because Trump,
00:13:36goes partly now,
00:13:39and the gap is 2.74 seconds,
00:13:42the problem with Nigel Mansell,
00:13:44who is definitely out of the race,
00:13:47is that he blew his engine,
00:13:49and Derek Daly went out,
00:13:51with a broken rear suspension,
00:13:54so tough luck for Nigel Mansell,
00:13:57because he's now in a situation,
00:13:59where he's actually into his 2nd Grand Prix,
00:14:02on the Grand Prix rounds,
00:14:04last week in Austria,
00:14:06he had his 2nd Grand Prix,
00:14:07it's the same in Holland,
00:14:08and it's Andretti,
00:14:10with the very twisted front wing,
00:14:12as you can see there,
00:14:13behind Ricciardo Patrese,
00:14:16Patrese is in 9th position,
00:14:20and he has got past Mario Andretti,
00:14:24so Andretti is obviously being held up,
00:14:27and the positions at the moment,
00:14:29on lap 9,
00:14:30in the 72 lap,
00:14:31there is the leader,
00:14:32Alain Prost,
00:14:33there in 2nd place is Alan Jones,
00:14:35then in 3rd position is Nelson Piquet,
00:14:38in 4th position it is Jacques Lapite,
00:14:41in 5th position it is Rennie Arnoux,
00:14:436th is Carlos Reutemann in the point,
00:14:467th is number 7,
00:14:47John Watson,
00:14:498th is Elio De Angelis,
00:14:519th is Ricciardo Patrese,
00:14:52and 10th is Mario Andretti,
00:14:55and a lot of excitement,
00:14:57Nigel Mantle is down in the pits,
00:15:00I'm looking down at him,
00:15:01as Jones and Prost go through,
00:15:04chased by Piquet,
00:15:06and Lapite,
00:15:07and Reutemann,
00:15:08there is Reutemann,
00:15:10then he's passed,
00:15:12Rennie Arnoux,
00:15:13who must be in some sort of trouble,
00:15:15because now John Watson is challenging him,
00:15:18and John Watson was in 7th position,
00:15:20still is then,
00:15:21so right down the lap chart,
00:15:23is going the Renault of Rennie Arnoux.
00:15:28Yes, I would think he has some sort of mechanical problem,
00:15:31impossible really to tell from here,
00:15:33but he seems to have been going steadily backwards,
00:15:35through the field,
00:15:37since the start of the race almost,
00:15:39and his teammate Alan Prost,
00:15:42seems to be going very healthily,
00:15:44so, but of course,
00:15:45I think they could have a different choice of tyres,
00:15:48I think, from what I understand now,
00:15:50with the competition with different tyre companies involved,
00:15:52the Renaults on their Michelin tyres,
00:15:54were a little bit marginal with their extra power,
00:15:56for running a soft compound,
00:15:58and it may be that they put Arnoux
00:16:00on the harder compound of tyre,
00:16:01to make sure that he lasted,
00:16:03which might be making him a little bit slower,
00:16:04but, as I say,
00:16:06without actually being down in the pits,
00:16:08and checking it out,
00:16:08it's really impossible to tell,
00:16:10and there's a good chance that they wouldn't even know there,
00:16:11if there is a mechanical problem of slowing him down.
00:16:15You are looking at the battle,
00:16:16between the yellow turbocharged Renault of Rennie Arnoux,
00:16:19in 6th position,
00:16:21and John Watson,
00:16:22in 7th place,
00:16:23and the gap is coming down,
00:16:26between Alan Jones,
00:16:27and the leader,
00:16:28Alain Prost,
00:16:29as we look at Jacques Lafitte,
00:16:31who is in 4th position,
00:16:33Carlos Reutemann,
00:16:34who is in 5th,
00:16:35and ahead of both of them,
00:16:36of course,
00:16:37Nelson Piquet,
00:16:383rd,
00:16:38Alan Jones,
00:16:392nd,
00:16:40and Alain Prost,
00:16:41the leader,
00:16:42with only 2.1 seconds,
00:16:45separating the young Frenchman,
00:16:4826-year-old Prost,
00:16:49from Saint-Chamond,
00:16:50in France,
00:16:51and 34-year-old Alan Jones,
00:16:53from Glenburn,
00:16:55in Victoria,
00:16:56in Australia.
00:16:56I just couldn't believe it.
00:17:07The fuel pressure was there,
00:17:10the ignition was on,
00:17:12and the engine just stopped,
00:17:13completely.
00:17:15How about the start,
00:17:17Nigel?
00:17:18Did you get a good start
00:17:19and get away well?
00:17:20Well, I got a reasonable start,
00:17:21but I had to sort of anchor up a bit,
00:17:23because there's flying cars
00:17:24on the left-hand side.
00:17:25So I made a good start,
00:17:27but then lost about one place.
00:17:29And, all right,
00:17:30so how are you feeling about Monza
00:17:32in two weeks' time?
00:17:33Well, I'm looking forward to Monza
00:17:35very much now.
00:17:36Obviously,
00:17:37I feel very,
00:17:38very bad about it today.
00:17:39I just can't believe my luck
00:17:40at the moment,
00:17:41because the car was a very,
00:17:42very good balance,
00:17:43and I was just sitting there nicely.
00:17:45Well, hang on, Nigel,
00:17:46your luck must turn,
00:17:47and everybody in Britain
00:17:49is behind you.
00:17:50And everybody in Australia
00:17:52will be behind number one.
00:17:54There he is,
00:17:55the world champion,
00:17:56Alan Jones,
00:17:57and that gap,
00:17:58which has come down
00:18:00from three seconds,
00:18:02then to 2.9 seconds,
00:18:03and then to 1.7 seconds,
00:18:06is down to what you can see visually
00:18:09with Alan Jones now having
00:18:12Alhanskos well
00:18:15and truly in his sight.
00:18:17The completed lap,
00:18:181.7 seconds,
00:18:20was the gap
00:18:22at the end of the previous lap,
00:18:24and the gap now
00:18:25is 1.5 seconds,
00:18:28and Nelson Kike
00:18:29in third position
00:18:31in the Brabham,
00:18:32the man who won here last year,
00:18:34don't forget,
00:18:35is not so very far
00:18:37behind Alan Jones.
00:18:38Both the Williams
00:18:40and the Brabham
00:18:40beautifully set up
00:18:42for this dashboard circuit.
00:18:44Yes, they seem
00:18:45pretty evenly matched,
00:18:46quite honestly,
00:18:47at the moment, Mario,
00:18:47the cars in the race.
00:18:49Jones has only been
00:18:50whittling away the Renault Z
00:18:51very slowly, really,
00:18:53and BK,
00:18:56his position
00:18:56hasn't really changed
00:18:58very much
00:18:59relative to Alan Frost
00:19:01since he got past
00:19:02Frost's teammate, Arno.
00:19:04So I think
00:19:06if we can just get the cars
00:19:07to do us a favour
00:19:08and punch up a bit,
00:19:09then we've got a really
00:19:11close race on our hands,
00:19:12because I don't think
00:19:12anybody's going to walk away,
00:19:13and I think
00:19:14Alan Jones and Alan Frost
00:19:17are sufficiently closely matched,
00:19:20and it's going to be
00:19:20quite a struggle for Jones
00:19:22to get by the Renault.
00:19:23lap 14 out of 72,
00:19:27and as we watch Frost,
00:19:29who is a very cool young customer,
00:19:32and he needs to be,
00:19:33with the thundering Alan Jones
00:19:35in his mirrors,
00:19:36the positions are
00:19:37Frost leading number one,
00:19:39Alan Jones,
00:19:40who is in second place.
00:19:41Nelson Piquet
00:19:42comes out of Vosuit
00:19:44to complete his 14th lap
00:19:47in third position,
00:19:48and there is only
00:19:501.6 seconds
00:19:51between Jones and Piquet.
00:19:53Fourth is
00:19:54Jack Napita de Torben,
00:19:55fifth is
00:19:56Jones' teammate
00:19:57Carlos Reutemann,
00:19:58sixth is
00:19:59John Watson
00:20:00in the point,
00:20:01seventh is
00:20:02René Arnoux,
00:20:02who is slipping back
00:20:03in the Renault
00:20:04all the time,
00:20:05eighth is
00:20:06Riccardo Patrese,
00:20:07ninth is
00:20:08Elio De Angelis
00:20:09in the
00:20:10job player special,
00:20:11Lotus,
00:20:11tenth is
00:20:12Hector Rebac,
00:20:13eleventh is
00:20:13Bruno Giacomelli,
00:20:15and twelfth is
00:20:15Jean-Pierre Jarié,
00:20:17and bringing up
00:20:19the rear,
00:20:20as it were,
00:20:21the last man
00:20:21still in the running,
00:20:22there's 18 cars
00:20:23still on the course
00:20:24with Andretti,
00:20:26Daly,
00:20:26Mansell,
00:20:27Pironi,
00:20:27and Torbay
00:20:29out of the running,
00:20:31and Gilles Villeneuve,
00:20:32of course,
00:20:33and there is
00:20:35the gap
00:20:35between
00:20:36Alice Jones
00:20:37and number one
00:20:38and the leader,
00:20:40Alain Prost,
00:20:41as they go
00:20:42into the right-hander
00:20:43at Vosuit,
00:20:45and they're coming
00:20:46down the straight
00:20:47soon
00:20:48to complete
00:20:49their fifth
00:20:50steep lap.
00:20:54Well,
00:20:54it's not going
00:20:55to need a stopwatch
00:20:56soon
00:20:56to separate them.
00:21:00Now,
00:21:00this is Vosuita,
00:21:01identified a bit
00:21:02early,
00:21:02they're into
00:21:03the top straight,
00:21:03and I see
00:21:04a tail-ender,
00:21:05it's Pironi
00:21:06in front of them,
00:21:07they're catching
00:21:08Didier Pironi,
00:21:09who is back
00:21:10in the race,
00:21:10but a long way
00:21:11down,
00:21:12of course,
00:21:12into Tarzan.
00:21:15This is where
00:21:15brakes are
00:21:16really needed,
00:21:18because they come
00:21:19from 175 miles an hour
00:21:21down to about
00:21:22110 in second gear
00:21:25for Tarzan,
00:21:26before they accelerate
00:21:27away to the
00:21:28Hugenholtz corner
00:21:29that they are at now.
00:21:31Prost,
00:21:32Jones,
00:21:33Alain Prost,
00:21:34the winner
00:21:35of the French draw
00:21:36three,
00:21:36second in Germany,
00:21:38but no less than
00:21:39eight did not finish
00:21:41situations in races,
00:21:43as a result of which
00:21:44he is only seventh
00:21:45in the World Championship
00:21:46with 19 points.
00:21:50Piquet's third,
00:21:51Latine's fourth,
00:21:52Reutemann fifth,
00:21:54Watson sixth,
00:21:55so the British Grand Prix
00:21:57winner John Watson
00:21:58is coming up
00:22:00through the field,
00:22:01the Marlborough MP4
00:22:03handling very well
00:22:04indeed in practice,
00:22:05and now I think
00:22:07it's going to be
00:22:08a case of Harry,
00:22:09Harry,
00:22:10Harry,
00:22:10Alain Prost
00:22:11every inch of the way
00:22:13by Alan Jones.
00:22:16Difficult to get past,
00:22:18because the Renaults
00:22:20handle much better
00:22:21than the turbocharged
00:22:22Ferraris,
00:22:23the Renaults
00:22:23turbocharged,
00:22:24of course,
00:22:25and there is
00:22:26a turbocharged
00:22:27Ferrari,
00:22:28that of Pironi,
00:22:29as Prost and Jones
00:22:31and Piquet
00:22:32just behind them
00:22:32in third position
00:22:33complete
00:22:35the 16th lap
00:22:36out of 72
00:22:37into Tarzan.
00:22:43Past Pironi,
00:22:45Pironi's moved over
00:22:46and let them both
00:22:47through.
00:22:48Now to Hugenholz,
00:22:49this is where
00:22:50Jones went off
00:22:51last year
00:22:51on the second lap
00:22:52at the point
00:22:53I established.
00:22:54Now,
00:22:54just there.
00:22:56Now up to the
00:22:57Rob Slotermacher
00:22:58fence,
00:22:59very quick indeed,
00:23:00175 miles an hour,
00:23:02and that's Riccardo
00:23:02Patrese seemingly
00:23:04out of the race
00:23:05again.
00:23:06He's had the most
00:23:06appalling luck
00:23:07this season.
00:23:08Patrese who led
00:23:09at Long Beach
00:23:10and is in ninth position
00:23:13in the World Championship.
00:23:14There is the gap
00:23:15as you look down
00:23:16on this very flat,
00:23:18very low-lying circuit,
00:23:20sea level at Sandport,
00:23:21between Prost
00:23:23in the Renault,
00:23:24knowing exactly
00:23:26what the situation
00:23:26is,
00:23:27Alan Jones
00:23:27in second place.
00:23:29Yes,
00:23:30it seems to be
00:23:30a bit of a difference
00:23:31between
00:23:31Alan Prost's car
00:23:34and his general
00:23:34performance
00:23:35from his teammate
00:23:36Bernie Arnoux
00:23:36because whereas
00:23:37now,
00:23:38at this point
00:23:39on the circuit,
00:23:39the corner
00:23:40onto the main
00:23:40straight,
00:23:41Jones could get
00:23:41right up behind
00:23:42Arnoux.
00:23:45Behind Prost here,
00:23:46he's not so close,
00:23:47he's not really
00:23:48in a position to attack.
00:23:49He won't pick up
00:23:50enough of a toe,
00:23:51enough of a slipstream.
00:23:52There is Patresi
00:23:55coming into the pit.
00:23:57A bit of a shame,
00:23:58that,
00:23:58because he was going
00:23:58very well in the race
00:23:59because he wasn't,
00:24:01as it were,
00:24:02on our leaderboard,
00:24:02but he was moving
00:24:03through the field
00:24:03quite nicely
00:24:04and he's got
00:24:05a pretty good car
00:24:05and he's been
00:24:06driving very well
00:24:06this year
00:24:07but he's been,
00:24:08as Barry said,
00:24:09in a pretty horrible
00:24:11season luck-wise
00:24:13with not many finishes.
00:24:22Well,
00:24:23is this going to be it?
00:24:24Is Jones going to take
00:24:25Prost off breaking
00:24:26as they come down
00:24:27to Tarzan?
00:24:27Last year,
00:24:28he drove right
00:24:29round the outside
00:24:30of a slower competitor
00:24:31and he's going to try
00:24:32and do it again.
00:24:33Alan Jones is going
00:24:35to try and drive
00:24:35right round the outside
00:24:37of Alain Prost
00:24:37and Prost moves
00:24:38across the front of him
00:24:39and just holds
00:24:40Alan Jones back.
00:24:41But all the time,
00:24:43Jones is getting
00:24:43closer and closer
00:24:44and he must wear
00:24:46Prost down.
00:24:48And that's Lapite,
00:24:49Jacques Lapite,
00:24:50fun off the course,
00:24:51the man who is
00:24:52in fourth position,
00:24:53the winner
00:24:54of the Austrian Grand Prix.
00:24:56Well,
00:24:57now the Dutch Grand Prix
00:24:58is literally
00:24:59hotting up
00:25:00and Lapite has
00:25:02given his best.
00:25:03He's out of the race
00:25:03and that means to say
00:25:05that up into
00:25:05fourth position
00:25:06will come
00:25:07Carlos Reutemann.
00:25:08OK,
00:25:09all that happened
00:25:09just a few seconds ago.
00:25:11So we go back now
00:25:12to the live action
00:25:13and it's Prost,
00:25:15still in front of
00:25:16Alan Jones.
00:25:16and let's see
00:25:23if Prost is going
00:25:24to force him
00:25:25to go down
00:25:26the outside again.
00:25:29Lap 20
00:25:29and Jones is trying
00:25:31as you can see
00:25:32for yourselves.
00:25:32Down to Tarzan.
00:25:33Is that John Watson?
00:25:36It's an Alfa Romeo.
00:25:39It's Bruno Giacomelli
00:25:41out of the race.
00:25:42Bruno Giacomelli
00:25:43out,
00:25:43spun off somewhere.
00:25:44But the good news,
00:25:46the bad news rather,
00:25:47is that with
00:25:49Lapite and Reutemann,
00:25:50the bad news
00:25:51for Talbot
00:25:52and Williams
00:25:52aficionados
00:25:53out of the race
00:25:54and Alan Jones
00:25:55still challenging
00:25:56Prost for
00:25:57first place.
00:25:59The good news
00:26:00for British viewers
00:26:01is that John Watson
00:26:02is up into
00:26:03fourth place
00:26:04behind Nelson Pique.
00:26:05The bad news
00:26:06for Carlos Reutemann
00:26:07is that
00:26:08as we look down
00:26:10on Bruno Giacomelli's
00:26:12stricken Alfa Romeo,
00:26:13the bad news
00:26:15for Carlos Reutemann
00:26:17is that his
00:26:18six-point lead
00:26:19in the world championship
00:26:20is going to be
00:26:21badly affected
00:26:22because he is
00:26:23obviously going to get
00:26:24no points in this race
00:26:25whereas Nelson Pique,
00:26:27the man who is
00:26:28only six points
00:26:29behind him
00:26:29in the world championship
00:26:30in second place,
00:26:32is in third place
00:26:33in the race
00:26:33and we're looking
00:26:34at Salazar
00:26:35and Michele Alvareta
00:26:37and Slim Borgud
00:26:38and this could be
00:26:40very significant
00:26:42indeed
00:26:42because Prost and Jones
00:26:45now are closing up
00:26:46on and are about
00:26:47to lap
00:26:48these three cars
00:26:48which are spread
00:26:49across the circuit,
00:26:50Salazar and Alvareta
00:26:52and Borgud.
00:26:53Yes, absolutely
00:26:54there's a good chance
00:26:56that they won't see it
00:26:57because they appear
00:26:57to be extremely
00:26:58engrossed
00:26:58in their own battles
00:26:59none of them
00:27:01are particularly
00:27:01experienced drivers
00:27:03and if they don't see
00:27:04or realise
00:27:05that they've got
00:27:05the battle for the lead
00:27:06closing in on them
00:27:08and breathing down
00:27:09their necks
00:27:10then of course
00:27:11the disadvantage
00:27:12goes to Prost
00:27:14in that situation
00:27:15he is the leading car
00:27:17any messing about
00:27:18they get from
00:27:19the people in front
00:27:21can basically
00:27:22only hurt him
00:27:22because he's got
00:27:23the lead to lose
00:27:24whereas Jones
00:27:24might get held up
00:27:25but he can always
00:27:25catch it up again
00:27:26so Prost
00:27:28will now be feeling
00:27:28pretty nervous
00:27:29and very anxious
00:27:30to get past there
00:27:32and get himself
00:27:32between the back markers
00:27:33and Alan Jones.
00:27:36Well, I'd see what happens
00:27:37there is Prost
00:27:39past Salazar
00:27:41but Jones not
00:27:43now this is where
00:27:44Prost can break away
00:27:45if he can get past
00:27:46Borgoode
00:27:46the Swedish driver
00:27:48in the ATS
00:27:49and he has punched
00:27:50his way through
00:27:50and Jones has gone
00:27:51past Salazar
00:27:52Jones goes past
00:27:54Borgoode
00:27:54and they're both
00:27:55closing up now
00:27:56on Michele Alvaretto
00:27:58the young Italian
00:28:00Formula 2
00:28:01and Formula 1 driver
00:28:03who only got his
00:28:04place in this race
00:28:05thanks to the fact
00:28:07that Andrea de Cesaris
00:28:08was not able to start
00:28:10because there was
00:28:11not a spare
00:28:12Marlborough MP4
00:28:13for him to race in
00:28:14and they're coming
00:28:15down to Tarzan now
00:28:17on the 22nd lap
00:28:19out of this
00:28:2052 lap race
00:28:21and
00:28:23Cross knows
00:28:24of course
00:28:25that Alan Jones
00:28:25is there
00:28:26what's
00:28:27Michele Alvaretto's
00:28:29situation
00:28:29going to do
00:28:30to affect
00:28:31Prost and Jones
00:28:33with Piquet's
00:28:34third position
00:28:35on his way
00:28:36to four points
00:28:36and if Piquet
00:28:38finishes there
00:28:38the lead
00:28:39in the World Championship
00:28:40of Carlos Reutemann
00:28:41will be down to
00:28:42only two points
00:28:43with John Watson
00:28:45in fourth position
00:28:46but some five seconds
00:28:49behind Nelson Piquet
00:28:50and now
00:28:51Cross the leader
00:28:53Jones in second place
00:28:54are up with
00:28:55Alvaretto
00:28:56coming up to the
00:28:57Barbara Box
00:28:58the left and right
00:28:59new chicane
00:29:01and Jones challenges
00:29:02Alvaretto
00:29:08about to be
00:29:09left
00:29:09Cross the leader
00:29:10Jones in second place
00:29:11and this is lap 23
00:29:13well Alvaretto's
00:29:23not being very
00:29:23helpful at all
00:29:24but I think
00:29:24once they get
00:29:25onto the main
00:29:25straight
00:29:26Jones is very
00:29:28close indeed
00:29:29he can't do it
00:29:29there
00:29:30oh he has
00:29:31how amazing
00:29:32that was very
00:29:33cheeky indeed
00:29:34he sits inside
00:29:35the Renault
00:29:35fabulous opportunity
00:29:36for Jones
00:29:37but I fear
00:29:37the Renault
00:29:38might just be
00:29:39able to
00:29:39slip through
00:29:39his way up
00:29:40but it's a good
00:29:40time for Jones
00:29:41because he's
00:29:41got the tow
00:29:42from that
00:29:42Tyrell in front
00:29:43of them
00:29:43the brilliant
00:29:44piece of
00:29:45opportunism
00:29:45I understood
00:29:46and Cross
00:29:47is challenging
00:29:47again
00:29:48I think Cross
00:29:48got the inside
00:29:49he's done it
00:29:49terrific stuff
00:29:51Alain Cross
00:29:53is a very
00:29:54gutsy young man
00:29:55and he demonstrated
00:29:56his qualities
00:29:57there to
00:29:57perfection
00:29:58by fighting
00:29:59back immediately
00:30:00to probably
00:30:02the toughest
00:30:03and one of
00:30:03the most
00:30:04experienced
00:30:04men in
00:30:05world championship
00:30:06motor racing
00:30:06Alan Jones
00:30:07so momentarily
00:30:09a new
00:30:10race leader
00:30:11Alain Cross
00:30:12led from
00:30:13lap 1
00:30:14to lap 23
00:30:15and he's
00:30:16back in the lead
00:30:17again now
00:30:17he's on his
00:30:1824th lap
00:30:19but Alan Jones
00:30:20is not going to
00:30:21take that line
00:30:22down
00:30:23he needs the
00:30:24points as I have
00:30:25said before
00:30:25and he must
00:30:27because Alan
00:30:27has probably got
00:30:28the best brain
00:30:29in the racing
00:30:30business
00:30:31he's brought up
00:30:32in a racing
00:30:33atmosphere
00:30:33his father
00:30:34Stan Jones
00:30:35won the
00:30:36Australian
00:30:36draw 3
00:30:37and could have
00:30:38been a brilliant
00:30:38Formula 1 driver
00:30:40Alan Jones
00:30:41with 11 draw 3
00:30:43victories behind
00:30:44him
00:30:44to Alain
00:30:45Frost

00:30:46is now
00:30:48continuing to

00:30:50it is

00:36:29in third place
00:36:30and as I said
00:36:31before
00:36:32that would
00:36:33close the gap
00:36:34between himself
00:36:35and Carlos
00:36:36Reutemann
00:36:37to only
00:36:38two points
00:36:39the world
00:36:40championship
00:36:41is getting
00:36:41more and more
00:36:42exciting
00:36:43as the series
00:36:45runs on
00:36:45there's only
00:36:46three races
00:36:47left after
00:36:47Holland
00:36:48the Italian
00:36:49Grand Prix
00:36:50at Monza
00:36:51in a fortnight's
00:36:51time
00:36:52then the
00:36:52Canadian
00:36:52Grand Prix
00:36:53and the last
00:36:55race of the
00:36:55series
00:36:56a new
00:36:56fixture
00:36:57at Las Vegas
00:36:58in California
00:36:59Mark Surer
00:37:01driving
00:37:01extremely well
00:37:03he started
00:37:04the season
00:37:05in the
00:37:05ensign
00:37:06finished
00:37:06fourth
00:37:07in Brazil
00:37:07in the
00:37:07wet race
00:37:08terrific
00:37:09charge
00:37:09and
00:37:11Surer
00:37:12now
00:37:12has just
00:37:12got
00:37:13Nelson
00:37:15Piquet
00:37:15there's
00:37:15the Brazilian
00:37:16behind him
00:37:17looks at
00:37:17his mirrors
00:37:17I
00:37:19guess
00:37:20he will
00:37:20obviously
00:37:21see that
00:37:21it is
00:37:22Nelson
00:37:23Piquet
00:37:24might move
00:37:25over
00:37:25that was
00:37:26a flash
00:37:26of
00:37:26Jarrier
00:37:27number
00:37:2732
00:37:27that we
00:37:28saw
00:37:28and it
00:37:29looks to me
00:37:29as Jarrier
00:37:30is going
00:37:30much slower
00:37:31than he was
00:37:32before
00:37:32he is of course
00:37:33a long long
00:37:33way behind
00:37:34Surer now
00:37:35as Piquet
00:37:36goes through
00:37:36and lapsed
00:37:37Mark Surer
00:37:38and that
00:37:39means to say
00:37:39that Surer
00:37:40must be up
00:37:41into
00:37:41seventh position
00:37:43with Jarrier
00:37:44clearly out
00:37:45of the running
00:37:46and now
00:37:48Nelson
00:37:48Piquet
00:37:49having
00:37:49lost
00:37:50some
00:37:50time
00:37:51will be
00:37:52setting
00:37:52about
00:37:52closing
00:37:53the gap
00:37:53between
00:37:54himself
00:37:54and
00:37:54the race
00:37:55for

00:38:04and this
00:38:05is

00:38:0631
00:38:07that we're
00:38:08on

00:38:39earlier
00:38:40on

00:38:48in

00:38:50which
00:38:50regrettably
00:38:50is not
00:38:51as good
00:38:51as the

00:39:06much
00:39:07slower
00:39:07than we
00:39:08expected

00:39:29Alfa Romeo
00:39:30and Mario
00:39:31Andretti
00:39:31was actually
00:39:33seventh fastest
00:39:34on the grid
00:39:34in practice
00:39:35which is considerably
00:39:36better than
00:39:37he's been able
00:39:37to do
00:39:38since Long

00:39:39when he

00:40:16way
00:40:16Well
00:40:21one
00:40:22shouldn't

00:40:34stage
00:40:34of
00:40:35the

00:40:44won't

00:49:55lap 43 and if your heart skip a beat because the man in the picture is Alan Jones and you think
00:50:07he's in the lead I'm sorry to disappoint you he is not because Alain Prost is still up front
00:50:14notwithstanding the fact that that terrific tussle between himself and the world champion
00:50:20that we're looking at now was resolved at one point when Alain Jones scrambled by but Alain Prost with
00:50:28a flash of gallic fire just prodded the right-hand pedal a bit more and surged past Alain Jones on the
00:50:35run down to Tarzan and has now extended his lead Alain Jones has got something wrong with the car
00:50:42it may be that the tires are going off a bit but he's now eight seconds behind Alain Prost
00:50:48with Nelson Piquet behind him and a long way behind him some 16 seconds behind his third position
00:50:55then another 16 seconds back in his John Watson his fifth position is Hector Reback in the second of the
00:51:03two Parvalas Brabham in sixth place and he has been lapped by Alain Prost the race leader but not yet
00:51:10by Alain Jones is Elio De Angelis and with Jack Lafitte and Carlos Reutemann having gone out of the race
00:51:19when they tangled and pushed each other off the circuit the world championship position is going to be
00:51:25incredibly close at the end of this race if the positions remain as they are now I wonder if Alain Jones
00:51:33has got the same sort of problem as he has in America in Austria we don't know but there's plenty of time to find out
00:51:40and I tell you again Prost is leading from Jones Piquet is in third position Watson Reback and Agnes
00:51:47De Angelis we're on lap 44 it is a 72 lap race
00:52:1711th position in Germany back in the points in Austria and now he's got to try and do something about
00:52:27number 15 Alain Prost and Jones has got about 25 laps to do it but I don't think he can or I'm going to start
00:52:36watching very carefully the gap between number 15 Prost this man the 26 year old Frenchman and Alan Jones to see whether
00:52:45Alan is closing up it's Siegfried Sturr the Italian psychologist who gets involved in a bit of yoga before all the races begins
00:52:55who is ahead of Prost now the bearded Siegfried Sturr who notwithstanding his very Germanic name is Italian
00:53:07ex-Formula 3 champion of Italy did well in Formula 2 in a Tolman last year because Sturr won one of the Formula 2 championship races last year
00:53:19and you may pass on my right was the signal which he gave Prost and Prost has taken advantage of it
00:53:29and surged through enormous power that V6 one and a half litre Renault engine produces it is alleged about 540
00:53:41believe it or not great horsepower and here is Prost coming up to complete the lap and I'll give you the gap
00:53:47between himself and the second place man Alan Jones
00:53:53and there's the replay as he passes Sturr and the gap is 7.84 seconds
00:54:05and we're back live with Alan Frost on his way to his second Grand Prix victory
00:54:13third in the Argentine Grand Prix a brilliant first if he had to win a Grand Prix anywhere he would have wanted of course being very French
00:54:25he wanted to be a professional footballer but decided he would take up motor racing experience
00:54:31and if he wanted to win any race it was obviously going to be in France and he did jump that
00:54:35well just looking at this race now Murray it seems really a shame that the field has spread out a little bit
00:54:43the some sort of dominance that Alan Prost stands on it has really swallowed in
00:54:51something with Prost steering up earlier but the gap hasn't changed much in the last 3 or 4 laps
00:54:57or even 5 laps whether that's the fact that Prost has now established himself in 8 seconds
00:55:03or thereabouts over Alan Jones in 2nd place that is taking it easy
00:55:07or whether that little burst that he put on earlier relative certainly to Jones and Piquet
00:55:15whether that was some good ball for his car that's now gone
00:55:19let's hope in a way that it's a latter and that we can close that for a good race for the end
00:55:25there's Alan Jones just going round for Charles to have this
00:55:29he's had an absolutely marvellous year he's driven without doubt his best ever season
00:55:35it's just been a little bit unlucky not to not to have more points but of course that's the way it goes
00:55:39in major racing driving well and getting results for two very different things very often
00:55:43which is a sad thing about about sport but it's the nature of it with mechanical things involved as well
00:55:49and of course it means that your team therefore coming to a very important part and so does luck as well
00:55:57there's John Watson going in 4th place going very well indeed having another good race
00:56:03it was a bit of a disappointment for the Molder team in Austria after their
00:56:09win in Britain but the car definitely goes well on some part circuit and they're getting better and better all the time
00:56:17and it's nice to see the Molder team
00:56:21apparently at last re-emerging for their new management
00:56:25start at the beginning of the season definitely paying dividends and improving it so they continue to improve
00:56:31Watson certainly driving with a new confidence and aggression now that he's got certain reasonable machinery to play with
00:56:41John Watson of course the British Grand Prix winner fifth equal in the world championship
00:56:47and since the British Grand Prix he has finished sixth in Germany and sixth in Austria
00:56:53he was second in France and third in Spain
00:56:55so he's got a lot of very solid drives behind him in the points to give him that fifth equal championship position
00:57:03and driving what in my opinion is certainly the prettiest car in the world championship Formula 1 series at the moment
00:57:11the Marlborough MP4 designed by John Barnard
00:57:15and it's made out of carbon fibre in a unique and distinctive way and it showed its strength this car
00:57:23when at this point just there
00:57:25Andrew De Cesaris went off in practice yesterday at 130 miles an hour
00:57:31replay of John Watson
00:57:33and have a look at how little the suspension of these cars flexes now
00:57:37you can see the rockers hardly moving
00:57:41and that is because there is only about an inch of suspension movement on these Formula 1 cars now
00:57:45and indeed the tyres are one of the main suspension items
00:57:51because you look at the side of the car and you see it is essential to maintain the minimum ground clearance
00:57:57in order to get the maximum ground force and we're looking now you can see again a crossed car
00:58:03exactly the same situation applies
00:58:05exactly the same situation applies
00:58:07and I was saying and I'll very quickly finish that point
00:58:11that notwithstanding the fact that Andrew De Cesaris went straight into the armco
00:58:15separated only by a pile of tyres
00:58:17at over 130 miles an hour
00:58:19the carbon fibre tub of his Marlborough MP4
00:58:23absorbed all the punishment virtually unscathed
00:58:25and De Cesaris stepped out of the car without a scratch on him
00:58:29incredible
00:58:31Frost the leader
00:58:33and Frost is on his 51st lap
00:58:37in this 72 lap race
00:58:39and although he's got a comfortable cushion
00:58:41between himself and Alan Jones
00:58:43René Arnoux that is
00:58:45Frost team leader
00:58:47team mates rather
00:58:49I think they
00:58:51with Murray Claude Beaumont
00:58:53the Renault
00:58:55team PR
00:58:57lady in attendance
00:58:59and there is
00:59:01Arnoux's team mate
00:59:03and Arnoux's had a terrible season
00:59:05he's failed to finish in race after race
00:59:07and as Secret Star
00:59:09comes into the pits
00:59:11with a flapping tyre on the near side
00:59:13rear wheel
00:59:15he comes into the Arrows
00:59:17into the Renault Arrows pit position
00:59:19and you can see
00:59:21rope a really good pit stop at work now
00:59:23off comes the wheel
00:59:25and one of those mechanics is Dave Luckett
00:59:27the man who was
00:59:29trapped between Sturr's car
00:59:31and Matrizzi's car at Zolder
00:59:33and there's another puncture
00:59:35this is the
00:59:37ATS car
00:59:39of Slim Borgud
00:59:41and I wonder if that is significant
00:59:43that is an Avon tyre
00:59:45that is punctured on Borgud's car
00:59:47it's a Pirelli tyre
00:59:49that is punctured on the Arrows
00:59:51of Sturr
00:59:53who is now out of the pits
00:59:55but it looks as though the tyres
00:59:57are taking a lot of stick on the circuit
00:59:59yes I think
01:00:01it's a very abrasive surface
01:00:03that's absolutely correct
01:00:05we've got a bit of sand in it and things
01:00:07but that's John Watson
01:00:09stop
01:00:11John Watson in 4th position
01:00:13out of the race
01:00:14and I wonder why
01:00:15I'm trying to get a close look at the car
01:00:17the car
01:00:19the near side rear suspension
01:00:21looked a bit umpty to me
01:00:23but it may not have been that
01:00:25John of course was some 16 seconds behind
01:00:27Piquet in 3rd position
01:00:29and that means to say
01:00:31that with Watson out of the race
01:00:33with Borgud coming in
01:00:35and as I have said before
01:00:37it looks as though the car mortality
01:00:39is such that
01:00:41there are going to be remarkably few finishers
01:00:43in this Dutch Grand Prix
01:00:45and there's still a long way to go
01:00:47they were on lap 52
01:00:49there's another 20 laps to go
01:00:51and the Michelin tyres of Prost's car
01:00:55are taking just as much of a hammering of course
01:00:57as the Avons, the Pirellis and the Goodyears
01:01:00of the other competitors
01:01:02and I wonder how they're going to stand up to it
01:01:04they must be very worried in the Renault pits
01:01:07because they should have won several races this year
01:01:11well you could say should have
01:01:13if this had happened and if that hadn't
01:01:15they would have won more races
01:01:17but then so would Alan Jones
01:01:19and it's probably even Steven in the end
01:01:21but Prost went out of the Austrian Grand Prix
01:01:25the man that we're looking at now
01:01:27in the lead in Holland
01:01:29through no fault of his own
01:01:31and it would in a way be poetic justice
01:01:33if he came home first in this race
01:01:35the Austrian Grand Prix
01:01:36and he's showing every sign of doing just that
01:01:38because he is now 12 seconds ahead of Alan Jones
01:01:56Jones closing up on the fourth baseman
01:01:59Hector Riback
01:02:01the Mexican
01:02:03in Mexican construction
01:02:07very successful business of his own
01:02:09there's Nelson Piquet
01:02:11and we move from Riback and Piquet
01:02:19and Jones
01:02:21with Jones on his way to lap Riback
01:02:23who is in fourth place
01:02:25we move to Nelson Piquet
01:02:27in third position
01:02:28so the two Parmalat Brabhams are in third and fourth places
01:02:32in one race earlier on this year
01:02:35they were in first and second places
01:02:38in the Argentine
01:02:39because Hector Riback
01:02:40drove as he had never driven before or since
01:02:43and actually got up to second place
01:02:45behind his teammates
01:02:46there is his teammate
01:02:48two Grand Prix victories behind him
01:02:51this year
01:02:52Nelson Piquet
01:02:53six Grand Prix wins altogether
01:02:56second in last year's world championship
01:02:59and he won the race before last in Germany
01:03:03and finished third in Austria
01:03:04just two weekends ago
01:03:06surely a world champion of the future
01:03:09second last year
01:03:11second in this year's championship
01:03:14a very real chance of winning
01:03:16as he finishes this race only two points behind
01:03:19Carlos Reutemann
01:03:20who is of course out of the Dutch Grand Prix
01:03:25Mario Andretti in the Alfa Romeo is ahead of Nelson Piquet
01:03:31and really there are now only
01:03:35well in terms of really doing anything
01:03:39it's only a race between Prost, Jones and Piquet
01:03:45who have got 32 seconds between Prost and Piquet
01:03:49that we're looking at now
01:03:50who is in third position
01:03:51because as you have heard
01:03:53Rebac who is in fourth place
01:03:55The Angelis who is in fifth
01:03:57Shearer who is in sixth
01:03:59and Salazar who is in seventh place
01:04:01has all been lapped
01:04:02Salazar is still only one lap behind the race leader
01:04:07but then Albaretto who is eighth
01:04:09has been lapped twice
01:04:11and so on
01:04:12right down to Andretti who has been lapped
01:04:14four times in 11th place
01:04:16Yes it was a pity really
01:04:18the race I think lost
01:04:19apart from the concertina in going the other way
01:04:22whilst the early leaders crossed
01:04:24Joseph Piquet
01:04:25looked like they were closing up together
01:04:26there's Piquet
01:04:27in a very lonely third place
01:04:29the race lost a lot of character
01:04:31where of course Reutemann at the feet went out
01:04:35and it was an interesting situation
01:04:37because I thought it was very uncharacteristic of Reutemann
01:04:40who was trying to overtake the feet at the time
01:04:43he's come down the inside under braking
01:04:45and we saw that little shot of an action replay
01:04:47and er
01:04:49but we didn't see the whole thing
01:04:50so we don't really know what happened
01:04:52but what I do know is that Reutemann
01:04:54is a very defensive driver
01:04:55very careful
01:04:56very experienced
01:04:57and er
01:04:58he's leading the championship
01:04:59and his main concern now
01:05:01would be just to put
01:05:02pick up points
01:05:03or it should be
01:05:04unless of course the pressure's getting to him
01:05:05and he could see his closest rival
01:05:07in front of him
01:05:08and was beginning to panic a bit
01:05:09but er
01:05:10that's unlike
01:05:11unlike Carlos
01:05:12but er
01:05:13of course the circumstances of action
01:05:14we can only speculate on
01:05:15but one has to say
01:05:16that er
01:05:17if he was overtaken from behind
01:05:18he must have
01:05:19some contributory factor
01:05:20by the very fact
01:05:21that he was overtaken
01:05:22if er
01:05:23he may maintain
01:05:24that the feet moved over on him
01:05:25or something like that
01:05:26going into the corner
01:05:27but er
01:05:28certainly it would seem to me
01:05:29that it was er
01:05:30er
01:05:31very much
01:05:32if er
01:05:33if there was any
01:05:34element of perpetuosity
01:05:35in the er
01:05:36overtaking manoeuvre
01:05:37from Carlos Reutemann
01:05:38the fundamental
01:05:39er
01:05:40tactic of errors
01:05:41at this stage
01:05:42er
01:05:43of the championship
01:05:44he's got a little beat
01:05:45the other guy's been
01:05:46and slowed down
01:05:47or broke down
01:05:48during the race
01:05:49and er
01:05:50he certainly
01:05:51the last place he wants to be
01:05:52is back in his er
01:05:53caravan changing
01:05:55well er
01:05:56if I was er
01:05:57advising the producer
01:05:58and let me hate to say
01:05:59I am not
01:06:00what I would be saying
01:06:01to him now
01:06:02as we look at er
01:06:03Nelson Piquet
01:06:04and Alan Jones
01:06:05has been the quickest
01:06:06so far
01:06:07as you see
01:06:08it's 1 minute 21.83
01:06:09which is well off
01:06:11Rennie Arnoux's
01:06:12last year's
01:06:13lap record
01:06:141 minute 19.87
01:06:16and er
01:06:18as Piquet completes
01:06:19another lap
01:06:20I would be saying
01:06:21why not have a look
01:06:22at this terrific battle
01:06:23that is going on
01:06:25for sixth position
01:06:26which unfortunately
01:06:27we can't see
01:06:28between
01:06:29Marc FĂ¼hrer
01:06:30the Swiss driver
01:06:31in the Theodore
01:06:32and
01:06:33Elisio Salazar
01:06:34the Chilean
01:06:35in the
01:06:36Mo Nun
01:06:37and
01:06:38Nigel Bennett
01:06:39designed ensign
01:06:40because they are
01:06:41hammer and tongs
01:06:42at it
01:06:43for sixth position
01:06:44maybe we'll see
01:06:45a bit of it later
01:06:46we're concentrating
01:06:47for the moment
01:06:48on
01:06:49one of the
01:06:50very top men
01:06:51of
01:06:52Motor Racing
01:06:53World Championship
01:06:54Grand Prix
01:06:55who is rumoured
01:06:56and I emphasise
01:06:57and heavily underline
01:06:58the word rumour
01:07:00to be moving
01:07:01to the Marlborough team
01:07:02next year
01:07:03we were looking at
01:07:04Nelson Piquet
01:07:05now we look at
01:07:06the leader
01:07:07Alain Prost
01:07:09who has fought his way
01:07:10past
01:07:11and Salazar
01:07:12has got ahead
01:07:13of number 14
01:07:14Salazar
01:07:15that we just saw
01:07:17behind Alain Prost
01:07:19as Prost goes round
01:07:20Tarzan
01:07:21look for the next two
01:07:22you see the red
01:07:23and white
01:07:24ensign
01:07:25of
01:07:26Elisio Salazar
01:07:27ahead of
01:07:28the white
01:07:29Theodore
01:07:30of the Swiss driver
01:07:31Mark Fuhrer
01:07:32and Elisio Salazar
01:07:33as we watch
01:07:34the leader
01:07:35Alain Prost
01:07:36Salazar has moved up
01:07:38into a fine
01:07:39sixth position
01:07:40and into the
01:07:41world championship points
01:07:42on lap 59
01:07:44out of 72
01:07:46and Salazar
01:07:47I just caught
01:07:48a quick
01:07:49flash there
01:07:50has already pulled out
01:07:51two or three
01:07:52car length speed
01:07:53over
01:07:54SchĂ¼rer
01:07:55and behind SchĂ¼rer
01:07:56but
01:07:57several laps
01:07:58behind
01:07:59is Slim Borgud
01:08:00in the yellow
01:08:01ATS
01:08:02the leader
01:08:03Alain Prost
01:08:04is it going to be
01:08:05his second
01:08:06Grand Prix win
01:08:07he goes down
01:08:08into
01:08:09Voskuit
01:08:10there's Salazar
01:08:12here
01:08:13is
01:08:14Prost
01:08:23and
01:08:24I wonder
01:08:25if
01:08:26Mark Fuhrer
01:08:27is wryly
01:08:28thinking to himself
01:08:29Elisio Salazar
01:08:31took my seat
01:08:32in that car
01:08:33because he did
01:08:34as they thunder
01:08:36down the straight
01:08:37towards Tarzan
01:08:38behind Alain Prost
01:08:39the leader
01:08:40Mark Shearer
01:08:41who's seen
01:08:42in the end
01:08:43time
01:08:44was taken
01:08:45by
01:08:46Elisio Salazar
01:08:47has dropped
01:08:48down to
01:08:497th place
01:08:50Salazar
01:08:51in 6th position
01:08:522 laps now
01:08:53behind the leaders
01:08:54De Angelis
01:08:55in 5th position
01:08:56has been lapped
01:08:57Henker Riback
01:08:58in 4th place
01:08:59has been lapped
01:09:00Nelson Piquet
01:09:01is in 3rd position
01:09:03a long way
01:09:04behind Alan Jones
01:09:05who is increasingly
01:09:06dropping back
01:09:07behind Alan Prost
01:09:09that we
01:09:10look at now
01:09:11so
01:09:12Prost's problem
01:09:13is simply
01:09:14to keep going
01:09:15he can afford
01:09:16to lose
01:09:17quite a lot of time
01:09:18pace the car
01:09:20but
01:09:21not slow down
01:09:22so much
01:09:23that he loses
01:09:24his concentration
01:09:25which is a very dangerous
01:09:26thing to do
01:09:27and you can go off
01:09:28in a flash
01:09:29because
01:09:30because
01:09:31the cars are going
01:09:32very very quickly
01:09:33indeed
01:09:34there is
01:09:35Prost
01:09:42diminutive drivers
01:09:43they build very small cars
01:09:44at Renault
01:09:45because they have
01:09:46very small drivers
01:09:47for them
01:09:48Alan Prost
01:09:49and
01:09:50René Arnault
01:09:51are
01:09:52both slight of stature
01:09:53and Prost is completing
01:09:55now
01:09:56his
01:09:5760th lap
01:09:59and he goes
01:10:00across the line
01:10:01and I've got the stopwatch
01:10:02running
01:10:03to see how far
01:10:04Alain Prost is now
01:10:05ahead of
01:10:06Alain Jones
01:10:07ahead of
01:10:08Alain Jones
01:10:09and
01:10:10the answer is
01:10:117.25 seconds
01:10:13the gap has come down
01:10:14a bit
01:10:15but
01:10:16it could well be
01:10:17because
01:10:18Prost is taking things easy
01:10:19keeping away
01:10:20from the verges
01:10:22so as not to damage his tyres
01:10:23especially there
01:10:24which is
01:10:25as I have said before
01:10:26where Alain Jones
01:10:27went off so
01:10:28disastrously last year
01:10:29giving himself
01:10:30plenty of room
01:10:31perhaps
01:10:32changing up
01:10:33a fraction
01:10:34of a second
01:10:35earlier
01:10:36than he would
01:10:37normally do
01:10:38perhaps
01:10:39braking
01:10:40a fraction
01:10:41earlier
01:10:42than he would
01:10:43normally do
01:10:44giving the car
01:10:45the kindest
01:10:46easiest
01:10:47time possible
01:10:48knowing
01:10:49that he's still got
01:10:50a fair distance
01:10:51to go
01:10:52knowing that he's got
01:10:53a comfortable cushion
01:10:54knowing
01:10:55that
01:10:56if he can finish this race
01:10:57where he is
01:10:58it's going to be
01:10:59his second Grand Prix win
01:11:01of 1981
01:11:02making him very much
01:11:04the darling of France
01:11:05which he made himself
01:11:06also of course
01:11:07when he won
01:11:08the French Grand Prix
01:11:09and he's rather put
01:11:11René Arnoux's nose
01:11:12out of joint
01:11:13because
01:11:14René might well
01:11:16have regarded himself
01:11:17as being the Renault
01:11:19team leader
01:11:20when Jean-Pierre Jadoui
01:11:21went to Torben
01:11:22at the beginning of this year
01:11:24but in terms of sheer ability
01:11:28I'm afraid it's been crossed
01:11:30rather than Arnoux
01:11:31who has got the results
01:11:32this year
01:11:33and the gap between
01:11:48Prost and Jones
01:11:50is now up to
01:11:5114.9 seconds
01:11:55Jones is clearly nursing
01:11:57the motor car
01:11:58for some reason or another
01:11:59I cannot believe that
01:12:01Prost is that much superior
01:12:04or the Renault that much better
01:12:06than the Williams
01:12:07for him to be pulling away
01:12:09on sheer driving ability
01:12:11or car superiority
01:12:12as we watch Salazar
01:12:14now
01:12:15a good opportunity
01:12:16to have a good close look
01:12:18at the ensign
01:12:19the Mona Nigel Bennett
01:12:21ensign of
01:12:22Elisio Salazar
01:12:23who
01:12:25if he finishes where he is
01:12:27will
01:12:28must achieve
01:12:29one of his championships
01:12:30and that's the finish
01:12:31in the points
01:12:32he's in 6th position
01:12:3514th in Spain
01:12:37and
01:12:38in every other race
01:12:40this year
01:12:41he has either failed
01:12:42to qualify
01:12:43just a few of them
01:12:44but then he moved up
01:12:45into a situation
01:12:46where he very clearly
01:12:47became an obvious qualifier
01:12:49only to have trouble
01:12:50in race after race
01:12:51and to fail to finish
01:12:53this is
01:12:54his
01:12:55his
01:12:56fifth
01:12:57Grand Prix
01:12:58the man who entered racing
01:12:59there's Mark Kurer
01:13:01behind Kurer
01:13:02is Smith Borgut
01:13:03there is
01:13:04Jean Pierre
01:13:05Hector Rebac
01:13:08with Alan Jones
01:13:09in front of him
01:13:10and Alan Jones
01:13:11is now
01:13:12about to lap
01:13:13the fourth place
01:13:14now
01:13:15so the Dutch Grand Prix
01:13:16we must honestly say
01:13:17has become
01:13:18a bit professional
01:13:19but every time
01:13:20I have said that
01:13:21in the past
01:13:22something
01:13:23exciting has happened
01:13:24to change the situation
01:13:25altogether
01:13:26the situation at the moment
01:13:27being
01:13:28that
01:13:29on lap
01:13:3063
01:13:31out of
01:13:3272
01:13:33with therefore
01:13:34nine laps
01:13:35including the one
01:13:36they are on the go
01:13:37Alan
01:13:38Frost is leading
01:13:39Alan Jones
01:13:40by
01:13:4115
01:13:42seconds
01:13:43Nelson
01:13:44Piquet
01:13:45is 11 seconds
01:13:46in third place
01:13:47behind Alan Jones
01:13:48Hector Rebac
01:13:49in the second
01:13:50of the two
01:13:51Brabhams
01:13:52because the first
01:13:53of them is his team
01:13:54leader Nelson Piquet
01:13:55is in fourth place
01:13:56a lap
01:13:57behind the leaders
01:13:58Elio De Angelis
01:13:59in the John
01:14:00Clare Special
01:14:01Lotus
01:14:02is in fifth place
01:14:03a lap
01:14:04behind
01:14:05Elisio Salazar
01:14:06is sixth
01:14:07then
01:14:08is Sura
01:14:09seventh
01:14:10Alvaretto
01:14:11eighth
01:14:12Siegfried Sturr
01:14:13is in ninth position
01:14:14in spite of having to come
01:14:15into the pits
01:14:16to change that tyre
01:14:17Slim Borgut
01:14:18that we have seen
01:14:19is four laps
01:14:20behind the leaders
01:14:21but in tenth place
01:14:22Mario Andretti
01:14:24is on the same lap
01:14:25as Borgut
01:14:26and we're looking at Borgut
01:14:27now behind
01:14:28Mark Sura
01:14:29Andretti
01:14:30is in eleventh place
01:14:31John Watson
01:14:32is out of the race
01:14:34altogether
01:14:35Azar, Chiva,
01:14:36Gerier, Arnoux,
01:14:38Giacomelli,
01:14:39Lafitte, Reutemann,
01:14:40Patrese, Daly,
01:14:41Pironi,
01:14:42Mantle, Torbay
01:14:43and Villeneuve
01:14:44and we watched Alan Jones
01:14:48on his 63rd lap
01:14:52the gap between Jones and Piquet
01:14:55then is 9.25 seconds
01:14:57and that means that Piquet is gaining
01:15:00it was 16 seconds
01:15:02so Jones must be in trouble
01:15:06of a magnitude that is
01:15:08not just losing him time
01:15:10to Alain Cross the leader
01:15:13with 15 seconds
01:15:15between Prost and himself
01:15:16but to Nelson Piquet
01:15:17and this gaggle of cars
01:15:18in front of Jones
01:15:19isn't going to do him
01:15:20much good
01:15:21he passes Sura
01:15:28I don't think we have any evidence
01:15:29to worry on Judy Murray yet
01:15:32because Jones has really slowed down
01:15:34his gap to Prost
01:15:35is pretty constant
01:15:36although Piquet is creeping up
01:15:38I think the rate of progress
01:15:39would have to be faster
01:15:41but certainly we may get
01:15:42a bit of finish
01:15:43and if Jones is in trouble
01:15:44even that
01:15:46he's going to have to work hard
01:15:53there's Forgood
01:15:54the Swedish driver
01:15:56and out from behind
01:15:58in Slip Street
01:15:59comes the Brabham
01:16:00of Piquet
01:16:02of Hector Riback
01:16:03in fourth position
01:16:04nips through on the inside
01:16:05of Sarzan
01:16:06for good applied
01:16:07as he moves over
01:16:08and then
01:16:10closes up with his
01:16:11car's nose
01:16:12tucked under the rear aerofoil
01:16:14of Riback's car
01:16:15but not for long
01:16:16because the Mexican
01:16:17is getting away
01:16:18The Brabham is beautifully set up
01:16:20Riback in fourth position
01:16:22four positions and they are now on lap 65.
01:16:31Seven laps to go including this one and there's not so much left of this one.
01:16:35Reback fourth, Borgoode in tenth position
01:16:46and behind Borgoode is Alan Jones
01:16:48and of course there is Salazar who is sixth.
01:16:55So they're really spread out now because Salazar is just ahead of Reback on the circuit
01:17:03but he's a full lap but indeed two laps behind him in race distance and this race of attrition
01:17:12now seems to be in a situation where the drivers are very much in the groove,
01:17:17the cars are running reliably, the tyres are not giving trouble, they will know where they are.
01:17:22It would seem to me that no one could do very much about getting a place
01:17:28because Reback now is passing, that's Piquet, I'm sorry, passing Miqueli Alvareto.
01:17:35Nelson Piquet in third position and he's 20 seconds behind Alan Jones.
01:17:41Alvareto, the young Italian, is in seventh place but Alvareto is a full lap, no he's on the same lap as
01:17:53Elisio Salazar. Salazar sixth, De Angelis fifth, Reback fourth, Piquet third, Jones second and Cross the race leader.
01:18:03Nelson Piquet, the third place man in the Brabham.
01:18:21Nelson Piquet, the first place man in the Brabham.
01:18:25Nelson Piquet the third place man in the Brabham and he's got Elio De Angelis ahead of him
01:18:36Elio De Angelis who is in fifth place and he's already been lapped once
01:18:41Alain Prost is now on his 67th lap as is Alan Jones
01:18:49there is the Australian from Glenburn in Victoria his 93rd Grand Prix with such a
01:18:57wealth of experience behind him in Formula 3, Formula 2, Formula Atlantic
01:19:03he's now increased his interest because he's become an author and written
01:19:07probably the most controversial book about motor racing and his views on it
01:19:12has ever been in the history of racing and Alan Jones is a man with 11 Grand
01:19:21Prix victories behind him six of them last year and he's holding that second place
01:19:29quite easily there's a 16 second gap now it's back to between himself and Piquet so
01:19:38no problem or is there or is there I was reading that off a monitor but there is
01:19:48Piquet in the background on lap 67 Alan Jones in second place in trouble and there is
01:19:57Mario Andretti in real trouble Mario Andretti the American who was well down in
01:20:0311th position is clearly out of the race is he trapped in the cockpit or is he
01:20:09just taking his time in getting out of it but there's a battle developing for
01:20:13second place as we watch now Mario Andretti the world champion of 1978 who
01:20:20comes from Nazareth in Pennsylvania and it looks to me as though with Nelson Piquet
01:20:27lapping Elio De Angelis there is going to be a change of position for second place
01:20:33Alan Jones the Australian who needs to stay where he is he's going to lose second place
01:20:39to Nelson Piquet and I said needs to stay where he is because he will get six points for world
01:20:45championship second place if he can stay there now but Piquet has clawed his way up through the field
01:20:51you look at the broken Alfa Romeo of Mario Andretti who has just gone off the
01:21:21course and was trapped in the cockpit for some time he's just got out of it but I can't give
01:21:26you any more information on him than that at the moment but leading the race and
01:21:31leading very comfortably on lap 68 out of 72 continues to be this man Alain Frost but
01:21:40behind Frost and some 16 or seconds or so there's that fantastic battle and you see it change because
01:21:47Nelson Piquet at Karzans has nipped past Alan Jones the Gounty world champion Australian who has slipped down the third position now Jones has clearly been in some sort of trouble for a long long time and Nelson Piquet has been inexorably inching up on Jones
01:22:08and then it became more than inching up it became closing up quite visibly the gap came down to 15 seconds to 10 and then all of a sudden Nelson Piquet was right behind Alan Jones and look at it again a replay of Nelson Piquet on lap 69 taking second place at Tarzan from the world champion Alan Jones and that really transforms the world championship situation
01:22:36championship situation because Piquet is moving up from third to second has gained himself an extra two world championship points I'm doing some quick mental arithmetic while I'm talking to you and I reckon that if Piquet stays where he is now that is to say in second place until the end of the race he will be tying for the lead in the world championship with Carlos Reutemann who went out of the race much earlier on and this has been very much a Dutch
01:22:41Grand Prix of attrition
01:23:08because with the drivers on the 69th lap out of 72 and we look at Alan Jones closing up on Elio De Angelis Alan Jones now in third place and Elio De Angelis is in fifth position
01:23:22and there is Elisio Salazar, who's driven a wonderful race in sixth position.
01:23:29Salazar is the inside car number 14, and Piquet comes up behind Slim Borgut.
01:23:36Well, Alan Jones has been, as you write said, in trouble for some time
01:23:40and in a little bit of a deteriorating condition.
01:23:43We can't be sure what happened, although it did appear that he touched Eddie Cheever earlier in the race
01:23:48when he was lapping him and therefore may have damaged his suspension
01:23:51with some speculation that that may be the case, and if that is the case,
01:23:55then probably his tyres were going off, he's got a wheel a bit out of line,
01:23:58that damages the tyre, because he does seem to be fighting for grip rather badly.
01:24:02We're just looking at Mario Andrenovac, and I thought they had to carry him away there.
01:24:07He obviously put the damage to the car, which would be a heavy, heavy shot.
01:24:11Where is Alan Jones? I look back and Jones was not in sight,
01:24:16and Piquet has either pulled out a terrific lead over Jones,
01:24:20who was in third place all of a sudden, or Alan Jones is in real trouble.
01:24:25And if that is the case, that means to say Hector Rebac will come up into fourth position.
01:24:32And the leaders are now on their 71st lap out of 72.
01:24:38Elio de Angelis has gone through, and there is no sign of Alan Jones.
01:24:43So there he is, Alan Jones has slowed right down,
01:24:47and he's been passed left and right by much slower drivers,
01:24:51as we look at Alain Prost on his last lap of one.
01:24:55Yes, Alan Jones would have slowed right down,
01:24:56because he obviously can't race the quick guys,
01:24:58and he's got a whole lap on Hector Rebac in fourth place,
01:25:03and with a couple of laps together, there's no point in taking any risks,
01:25:05he just wants to finish the race, and he's doing the sensible thing,
01:25:08because particularly, if he's got damage suspension,
01:25:11he wants to give that the lightest possible load,
01:25:14because the last thing he wants to have, of course,
01:25:15is a suspension failure right at the end of the race.
01:25:20And having talked a lot about, and deservedly so,
01:25:23Elisio Salazar, there's a great scrap going on
01:25:27between him and Michele Alboreto for sixth place.
01:25:30But this is undoubtedly the man of the race.
01:25:35Alain Prost, 26 years old, from Saint-Cermontre,
01:25:39in only his 22nd Grand Prix,
01:25:42who is now crossing the line to start his 72nd and last lap
01:25:48in this Dutch Grand Prix,
01:25:50on his way to nine World Championship points
01:25:54at his second Grand Prix victory of the year,
01:25:56because he brilliantly won the two-part Grand Prix
01:26:00thanks to superb driving ability
01:26:03and some wonderful engagement
01:26:05by the Renault technicians
01:26:08who turned up the boost of it,
01:26:10put him on qualifying cars,
01:26:12and enabled him to win his own French Grand Prix.
01:26:15Then, second in Germany,
01:26:16and Michele Alboreto is out of the race,
01:26:19and it's a good thing it is more than 72 laps,
01:26:22because there are now only three drivers on the same lap.
01:26:28Prost, Piquet, and Jones, first, second, and third.
01:26:31Hector Rebac is in fourth position now,
01:26:34a lap behind.
01:26:36Elio de Angelis is in fifth place.
01:26:38Elisio Salazar, from Chile, in the end time,
01:26:42looks as though he is going to more than justify
01:26:45the faith of his Chilean countrymen
01:26:47in sponsoring him to race in the World Championship
01:26:50by finishing in sixth place
01:26:52as Prost passes Alboreto's car,
01:26:57tragic luck for the Italians,
01:26:59going out in sixth or seventh place
01:27:01on the very last lap of the Dutch Grand Prix,
01:27:05and that means to say that Secret Star
01:27:07will come up into seventh place,
01:27:09but the winner is Alain Prost.
01:27:13He's approaching the line now.
01:27:15He goes across the line
01:27:17and gets a tremendous cheer from the Renault team.
01:27:20He has won the Dutch Grand Prix of 1981
01:27:24at his second race,
01:27:26and the two-handed salute that we saw in France
01:27:30comes again from young Alain Prost,
01:27:33who now has 16 points in the World Championship
01:27:36and is passed on the run-down lap
01:27:39by the fourth-placeman, Hector Rebac,
01:27:43as Salazar finishes in sixth position.
01:27:47And both...
01:27:52The race, then, a win for Alain Prost
01:27:55with Pique second,
01:27:57Alan Jones in third position,
01:27:59Hector Rebac in fourth place,
01:28:01Elio de Angelis in fifth,
01:28:03and Elisio Salazar in sixth place,
01:28:06with only three competitors
01:28:08finishing the full race distance.
01:28:10The World Championship is more exciting than ever
01:28:13because now Carlos Reutemann and Nelson Pique
01:28:16are tying for first place with 45 points.
01:28:20In third position is Jacques Lafitte,
01:28:22only three points ahead of Alan Jones.
01:28:25In fifth position is Alain Prost
01:28:27after his second Grand Prix victory,
01:28:29and tying for sixth place,
01:28:32Gilles Villeneuve and John Watson.
01:28:35John Watson and Nigel Mansell,
01:28:38both out of the Dutch Grand Prix,
01:28:40and indeed, with only three competitors
01:28:44finishing the full race distance,
01:28:46it has been a disappointing race
01:28:48from the point of view of seeing so many drivers go out,
01:28:51but that takes nothing away
01:28:53from number 15, the winner, Alain Prost,
01:28:57from number 5, the second-placed man
01:28:59who is just behind Prost, Nelson Pique,
01:29:02or number 1, Alan Jones,
01:29:05finishing in third place.
01:29:07And as you can see from those World Championship positions,
01:29:11we go to the next Grand Prix at Monza in Italy
01:29:15in a fortnight's time
01:29:16with the World Championship excitement heightened even more
01:29:20because those six men are all still in
01:29:24with a chance of becoming the champion of 1981.
01:29:27And as you can see,
