00:00:00Number 15, Alain Prost, now really effectively in the World Championship, although he is some 14 points behind Didier Pironi.
00:00:11And Alain Prost there, and there in the background, the man who won the French Grand Prix, much to the disgust of Alain Prost, René Arnoux.
00:00:22Behind Alain Prost is the turbocharged Brabham BMW of Nelson Piquet.
00:00:31That is Alain Prost that we're looking at now.
00:00:3445 laps, 190 miles to go.
00:00:39And it's going to be very, very demanding because it is getting increasingly hot here at Hockenheim.
00:00:45Now, it looks to me as though everybody is running well.
00:00:49There is still a couple of officials right at the back of the grid, but they are holding them a long, long time on the grid.
00:00:55The drivers won't be very happy with this. It's green and gold.
00:01:04And it is René Arnoux, which leads to lead from Alain Prost as they lead the stadium and go up the first of the long straights into the first chicane,
00:01:16which has been very much time, and we're watching and hoping that there's going to be no coming together at the chicane.
00:01:22Yes, well, a very good clean start.
00:01:24We do have a bit of a question mark over Alain Prost's car.
00:01:27He had trouble in the warm-up with a misfire, and there is Nelson Piquet nosing past Prost.
00:01:33I don't know whether Prost's engine is all right.
00:01:34They got it fixed in the warm-up.
00:01:36It appeared to run all right, but it must have been a bit of a question mark.
00:01:39Campe already up into fourth place.
00:01:40He was quick in the warm-up this morning, and the Ferrari is really going very well indeed.
00:01:44Whoops, somebody going a little bit wide there, but they're all relatively safely through.
00:01:49And De Cesaris in fifth position.
00:01:51So, it is Arnoux leading Piquet with Prost in third position.
00:01:55Patrick Tolpe there in fourth position.
00:01:57De Cesaris is fifth, and that was Brian Henson coming up in the Pyrrol in sixth position.
00:02:03And I should establish immediately that we are expecting at least one of the two Frabbers to come in and refuel at roughly half distance.
00:02:13We were expecting this in the British Grand Prix, and now Piquet is challenging Arnoux, the leader.
00:02:19And it could well be that Piquet is only running on fast-cooled tanks with soft tyres,
00:02:24in which case he could well take the lead as he comes into the photodrome itself in front of those 80,000 Germans.
00:02:31And if they see a problem with a German BMW engine leading, they will really go berserk.
00:02:38But it's not, because as we watch them through, in the lead still is René Arnoux.
00:02:43Behind him is Nelson Piquet.
00:02:47They're coming through to compete a lap.
00:02:49And there you see the position.
00:02:51It is Arnoux, one lap completed, 44 to go.
00:02:55Piquet in second position as they sprint across the line.
00:02:58And in third position it is Alain Cross, fourth is Condé.
00:03:03In fifth position it is De Cesaris, sixth is Patrese, seventh is Alvaretto.
00:03:09And in eighth position is Eddie Kiva, in the very much improved Colbert.
00:03:15There's Piquet looking at every side to try and get round Arnoux.
00:03:19He is running half tanks.
00:03:20He'll want to get Arnoux out of the way, that he can get away and build up the necessary lead that he's going to have to have.
00:03:26And he's got through.
00:03:27Piquet has made it past René Arnoux.
00:03:29He's now in the lead, but he needs to be able to start establishing enough of a gap if he's capable of it to cover his pit stop.
00:03:36In fact, in France, the French Grand Prix, he was coming in on the very next lap before his engine blew up.
00:03:41So we were robbed of the fight of the pit stop.
00:03:44We're all fascinated to see how that goes.
00:03:45And in my enthusiasm, I wrongly attributed Brian Hinton with being up in about sixth position.
00:03:53Apologies to Michele Alvaretto, who of course it was.
00:03:57We are now on lap two.
00:03:58And Nelson Piquet, who is leading in the Brabham BMW.
00:04:02And this time the crowd will see the Brabham with the BMW German engine in the lead when he comes into the stadium.
00:04:08And I expect an enormous roar from those 90,000 tropes.
00:04:12And Piquet needs to establish a lead of about a second a lap if he is to build up enough of a lead to come in, slow down, stop, take on tyres and fuel,
00:04:25which they practised today in just over, believe it or not, 11 seconds, if he is to build up enough lead to go on and win.
00:04:34Well, the way he's handled this half a lap that he's been in the lead, he's streaking away at the moment.
00:04:39Murray, he's already two seconds to the good, and he's only been in the lead for half a lap.
00:04:45So he can maintain that sort of a pace relative to the others.
00:04:49He's going to be down.
00:04:50Cardo for trades, he's also moved up to take his rightful place amongst the turbocharged group.
00:04:57Rather, he's a little bit fixed up, didn't get a very good start, and had to fight past a few normally after a good start.
00:05:04One car coming into the pit, and that's very hard luck, because Chiva was well up in practice.
00:05:13They've got the Torbett going very much better than they have in the races so far this year.
00:05:19And Chiva, with Lapite, was well up, because Chiva was in 12th position.
00:05:23And as you see, the Torbett is up on the jacks.
00:05:27The V12 Matra engine behind it is not being looked at, but it's obviously skirt trouble,
00:05:34because they're replacing a skirt panel on the near side of the Torbett, whilst they are also attending to tyres.
00:05:42But it looks as though Chiva went off somewhere, damaged a skirt.
00:05:45And there, because we are now on lap three, were the positions, it is René Arnoux in second place, behind Nelson Piquet.
00:05:54And Piquet is already coming up to catch and lap the arrows of Mauro Baldy, who has obviously joined the race.
00:06:01And you can see the gap yourselves between race leader, world champion, number one, Nelson Piquet,
00:06:07the man who won in Brazil, but was disqualified, won in Canada, was second in Holland, and is in seventh place in the world championship.
00:06:16And he's catching Baldy.
00:06:25And there is a distinct ripple from the crowd as they see the problem with its BMW turbo engine come into the stadium.
00:06:34And Piquet is really pushing it very, very hard indeed.
00:06:40He is out of the Saks curve, into the Elf curve, now into the straight path, the enormous grandstand.
00:06:47And the gap between Nelson Piquet in the lead, and in second place, the Renault of René Arnoux,
00:06:55with cross-cour already sounding a bit lumpy to me, but Piquet is leading by 3.7 seconds.
00:07:02For Patrick Toulbet, look for the Scarlet Ferrari, the next power up of Patrick Toulbet,
00:07:10the Frenchman who has taken the leadership of the Ferrari team, now that the unfortunate Didier Pironi is out of the race.
00:07:17And there is René Arnoux, second place behind him, and Toulbet, in the background you will see in fourth position,
00:07:26is right up with Alain Prost.
00:07:28So, we have the prospect of the Ferrari turbocharged V6 of Patrick Toulbet, driving in only his third race for the team,
00:07:38moving up into third position.
00:07:40Elio De Angelis is in the pits in front of me, I don't know what the problem is,
00:07:45and into the pits too comes Manfred Winkelhock, and the German crowd will be very unhappy about that,
00:07:51and it looks to me as though he's out of the race.
00:07:53Look, he's levering himself out of the car, and the crowd will be enormously disappointed,
00:07:59because Winkelhock, as a German, was carrying their hopes for a high place, not for a win, obviously.
00:08:08And Piquet now is some five seconds ahead of René Arnoux,
00:08:14as we look at lap four of the stationary ATS of Manfred Winkelhock.
00:08:21And that is Piquet, into the complex, into the stadium,
00:08:27round the second gear Saks curve at some 90 miles an hour.
00:08:32Well, let us all hope that the Grabber BMW is going to get well past the half distance,
00:08:41because it is at the half distance that Nelson Piquet is scheduled to come in and change fuel,
00:08:49and now the Gap. Patrick Toulbet, as we look at Jarrier, out.
00:08:54Jarrier is out, and Patrick Toulbet is up into third place.
00:09:00The Frenchman in the Ferrari, the sole Ferrari in the German Grand Prix here today,
00:09:06with Jarrier removing his helmet at Balaclava.
00:09:09His race has been a very long one.
00:09:12And Patrick Toulbet now, with the honour of Ferrari, resting on his shoulders.
00:09:16He's up into third position, and that is Winkelhock.
00:09:32Nelson Piquet is certainly streaking away at quite a fast enough rate.
00:09:37He's got over four seconds now on the field,
00:09:41and at that rate, pulling away at over a second of the lap,
00:09:44he's going to be in a very comfortable time to have his pit stop.
00:09:48So really, it looks very much at the moment as if it's a question of reliability for the Grabber BMW.
00:09:53They've finished once or twice, but basically it is a new engine,
00:09:57and they're not easy to get reliable, these turbos.
00:10:00So we'll just keep our fingers crossed.
00:10:02Certainly we'd like to see the pit stop,
00:10:03because this should be an exciting new feature of Grand Prix racing,
00:10:06if these turbo cars develop more and more power, they drink more and more fuel,
00:10:10and the concept that it's quicker to go to the three you'd like to,
00:10:14to have a stop at the middle, rather than fill them up with lots and lots of petrol,
00:10:18is certainly an interesting one.
00:10:23Well, I'm sorry you couldn't hear that long interview with Manfred Winklerhock,
00:10:27and I can't tell you what it was about,
00:10:28but I can tell you that the race leader here, Brazilian world champion Nelson Piquet,
00:10:34is now 6.2 seconds ahead of the second-placed man, René Arnoux,
00:10:40winner of the French Grand Prix,
00:10:42and therefore Nelson Piquet, presumably on half-full tanks and soft tyres,
00:10:48is well on schedule for the 40-second lead he needs to have by the half-distance lap.
00:10:55Now, I say presumably, there is Arnoux, incidentally,
00:10:59behind him is Patrick Torbay,
00:11:01and there is no doubt that Torbay,
00:11:03in third position there, ahead of Alain Cross,
00:11:06Riccardo Patrese is the second of the Brava BMWs,
00:11:09and in Cesaris is the leading three-liter car,
00:11:11and that's the Alfa Romeo.
00:11:13Torbay is now only 2.3 seconds,
00:11:16or was when that caption was made up,
00:11:18behind the second-placed man, Arnoux,
00:11:21and Torbay was quicker than René Arnoux in the warm-up today.
00:11:26There's Piquet leading, and we are on lap 6.
00:11:29I expect Patrick Torbay to go through and into second place,
00:11:34ahead of René Arnoux, before very much longer.
00:11:37There's De Angelis, back in the race after his pit stop,
00:11:40and we are looking now at the arrows
00:11:43of the Italian ex-Formula 3 driver, Mauro Baldi.
00:11:50And the order is...
00:11:52Piquet leading, Arnoux second,
00:11:55Torbay third,
00:11:56Ross in fourth position,
00:11:58Riccardo Patrese in fifth position,
00:12:00and this is Nelson Piquet coming up to lap Baldi.
00:12:02In the background, on lap 6,
00:12:05you saw René Arnoux,
00:12:06much further back than he looks on your screen, in fact,
00:12:09and Piquet, that's how much faster,
00:12:11the Piquet, and the Brabham BMW,
00:12:13which produces some 600 horsepower
00:12:16from its four-cylinder,
00:12:18one-and-a-half-litre engine,
00:12:20is Van the Arrow.
00:12:23John Watson, by the way,
00:12:25is in ninth position,
00:12:27and Derek Warwick in the turbo-tollman
00:12:30is tenth ahead of Derek Daly, 11,
00:12:32and British driver Nigel Mantle
00:12:34is currently in 14th place.
00:12:37Brian Hinton is 16th,
00:12:39and this is...
00:12:40Piquet...
00:12:43...tricking away into the right-hander,
00:12:46which leads into the very fast straight.
00:12:49Any particular problems, James,
00:12:51from driving this Hockenheim circuit?
00:12:53No, it's actually a fairly easy one,
00:12:55specifically on the drivers, Murray,
00:12:57because it is long straight,
00:12:59you've got a good rest on the straight,
00:13:00it's not too bumpy,
00:13:02and a bit of hard work for the infield,
00:13:07but it's probably one of the easiest circuits to drive.
00:13:11The speeds are enormous, of course,
00:13:12but with the relative difference in power of the cars,
00:13:17there's not so much shift reading now as it used to be.
00:13:19The speeds are enormous,
00:13:22for instance,
00:13:23with that chicane,
00:13:24which Piquet has just gone through,
00:13:27which is the second gear,
00:13:28he builds up now,
00:13:29and he's closing up on Eddie Cheever,
00:13:32who has rejoined the race,
00:13:34and chasing Elio De Angelis
00:13:35in the number 11 John Slayer Special,
00:13:38and he will now be doing a speed
00:13:40of some 160 miles an hour
00:13:42as he approaches the second chicane,
00:13:46the French Curve,
00:13:47and I can tell you
00:13:48that as Piquet closes up on Cheever there
00:13:52in the red helmet,
00:13:53number 11,
00:13:54Elio De Angelis,
00:13:56who is well down the field,
00:13:57I can tell you that already
00:13:59he's grabbed a pit crew,
00:14:01and we are only on lap 7
00:14:03in this 45-lap race,
00:14:05and do not expect Piquet
00:14:07to come in
00:14:07until about lap 22 or 23,
00:14:10but already,
00:14:12as Piquet comes into the stadium,
00:14:14his mechanics
00:14:15that are going to refuel
00:14:17and retire the car
00:14:18are standing in the pit road
00:14:20in their immaculate overalls,
00:14:22two of them in crash helmets,
00:14:25and Piquet is driving past them,
00:14:27they're behind the arm code just there,
00:14:29they have these gigantic,
00:14:31pressurized,
00:14:32what look like beer barrels,
00:14:34which contain about 25 gallons of fuel,
00:14:38and the ovens,
00:14:39the enormous ovens,
00:14:40with wheels and tires inside them,
00:14:43to heat the tires
00:14:44to race temperatures,
00:14:46are all ready,
00:14:47so be prepared for something really dramatic,
00:14:51assuming that Piquet lasts at least 25 laps,
00:14:53closing on Elio De Angelis,
00:15:02and surging past him,
00:15:06De Angelis in the Ford V8 engine,
00:15:12John Clare special,
00:15:13and nothing can live with Piquet,
00:15:15in this car,
00:15:16and this circuit,
00:15:19Nelson is,
00:15:23actually in his,
00:15:2459th Grand Prix here today,
00:15:27there's a view of the pit road,
00:15:28and that's Mauro Baldi,
00:15:30CK just going past,
00:15:35or trying,
00:15:35trying to squeeze through,
00:15:36yes,
00:15:37the concept of the pit stop
00:15:40is certainly very interesting,
00:15:41because these cars,
00:15:43use such a lot of fuel now,
00:15:44that when they're filled up
00:15:46to do a whole race,
00:15:47particularly the turbocharged cars,
00:15:48they're taking on 45,
00:15:49or so,
00:15:51gallons of fuel,
00:15:52and that ups the weight of the car
00:15:53by over half as much again,
00:15:55so,
00:15:56it makes a great,
00:15:57big difference,
00:15:58the performance of the car,
00:15:59and that's what Piquet is depending on,
00:16:01he is,
00:16:02he's not,
00:16:03if you had full tanks,
00:16:04he wouldn't be this much quicker
00:16:05than the others,
00:16:06but it's,
00:16:07it's worth probably a couple of seconds a lap,
00:16:09or a second and a half a lap anyway,
00:16:11to have half full fuel tanks,
00:16:13the cars handle very normally,
00:16:14for some reason,
00:16:15when they're half full,
00:16:16it's only when you pull them right up,
00:16:17that they,
00:16:17that they really struggle with the weight,
00:16:19and of course,
00:16:20they're slow on acceleration,
00:16:21they,
00:16:22they're also,
00:16:23slide more in the corners,
00:16:24because there's more inertia,
00:16:26trying to go straight on,
00:16:28instead of round the corner,
00:16:30and,
00:16:30er,
00:16:32Piquet is using it to,
00:16:33excellent advantage at the moment,
00:16:35and as I said before,
00:16:36he's well on schedule,
00:16:37er,
00:16:37to have bags of time for his fifth stop,
00:16:39which,
00:16:40er,
00:16:40it's just a shame that the race has got so spread out,
00:16:42because we've had,
00:16:43er,
00:16:44a couple of pretty professional races recently,
00:16:46and we,
00:16:47really need something to cheer us up,
00:16:48and give us something to shout about up here,
00:16:50what,
00:16:51incidentally,
00:16:54if you're wondering what these numbers are,
00:16:56in the top left hand corner,
00:16:57it is the lap,
00:16:59on which the cars are,
00:17:01and now,
00:17:02there is the excitement,
00:17:04at the present moment,
00:17:05which I forecast a little while ago,
00:17:07it is Patrick Tombe,
00:17:09number 27,
00:17:10in his fourth Grand Prix,
00:17:12for Ferrari,
00:17:13and as I have said before,
00:17:15and I'll say it again,
00:17:16all the hopes of Ferrari,
00:17:17and Italy,
00:17:18as far as the,
00:17:19Barranello concern,
00:17:21are concerned,
00:17:22a rest on Patrick Tombe's shoulders now,
00:17:25he's right up,
00:17:26with the second place man,
00:17:27René Arnoux,
00:17:28and Piquet is now,
00:17:3111 and a half seconds,
00:17:32ahead of Arnoux,
00:17:33there is Arnoux,
00:17:35in the yellow and white Renault,
00:17:36who seems to be able,
00:17:38to hold off Tombe,
00:17:39behind Tombe,
00:17:40in fourth position,
00:17:41you see Alain Prost,
00:17:43he is ahead of the fifth place man,
00:17:44Riccardo Patrese,
00:17:46and the gap,
00:17:47between Arnoux,
00:17:48and Tombe,
00:17:50is a little under a second,
00:17:52between Tombe and Prost,
00:17:54it is some three seconds,
00:17:55Prost is some six seconds,
00:17:57ahead of Patrese,
00:17:58who is fifth,
00:17:59and Tombe is certainly,
00:18:01much closer,
00:18:03to René Arnoux,
00:18:04than a second,
00:18:06Ferrari I would have said,
00:18:07is probably slightly slower,
00:18:08on the straight line,
00:18:09than the Renaults,
00:18:10because he's getting the advantage,
00:18:11of the split stream,
00:18:12behind the Renaults,
00:18:13but Tombe making,
00:18:15relatively little impression,
00:18:16on the straight,
00:18:17he'll have to,
00:18:18get himself in certain position,
00:18:20to get past,
00:18:21he had a bit of a struggle,
00:18:21getting past Alain Prost,
00:18:23and he's now,
00:18:24he's presented with the same,
00:18:25he's dropped back a little bit,
00:18:27through the stadium section,
00:18:28it's the corner,
00:18:29that they're approaching now,
00:18:30he needs to do really well,
00:18:32he's got to do this one,
00:18:33very well,
00:18:33the right hander,
00:18:34third gear right hander,
00:18:35get on to the straight well,
00:18:37but he's not really,
00:18:38close enough right now.
00:18:41Well you saw yourself there,
00:18:43what the gap,
00:18:43on the caption was,
00:18:45but the gap between,
00:18:46the leader,
00:18:47Piquet,
00:18:48and the battle,
00:18:49for second position,
00:18:50that is to say,
00:18:51Arnaud and Tombe,
00:18:52with Prost thundering along,
00:18:54in fourth position,
00:18:55and they are now,
00:18:56on lap 10,
00:18:57with nine completed,
00:18:59in 14.2 seconds,
00:19:01Piquet then,
00:19:0214.2 seconds,
00:19:04ahead of this battle,
00:19:05with,
00:19:06the Ferrari,
00:19:07of,
00:19:07Patrick Tombe,
00:19:09the 33 year old driver,
00:19:11from Cannes,
00:19:12in his 53rd,
00:19:13draw three,
00:19:15with a third place,
00:19:16and two fourth places,
00:19:18and the man,
00:19:19who is called,
00:19:19Prince Charming,
00:19:20back is,
00:19:21Andrea Di Cesaris,
00:19:23the young Italian,
00:19:25in sixth position,
00:19:26he was in sixth position,
00:19:27and that means,
00:19:28that John Watson now,
00:19:30will be,
00:19:31on the leaderboard,
00:19:32because the sixth place man,
00:19:34is in,
00:19:35with one world championship,
00:19:37pointed here in Tombe,
00:19:38up and passing,
00:19:39is he?
00:19:40Yes,
00:19:41Patrick Tombe,
00:19:42who has moved,
00:19:43ahead of Frost in the Renault,
00:19:45has now taken,
00:19:46René Arnoux,
00:19:47in the Renault,
00:19:48and the question is,
00:19:50can the Ferrari,
00:19:52close the gap,
00:19:53between itself,
00:19:54and the Brabham BMW Turbo,
00:19:57driven by Nelson Piquet,
00:19:58that we expect,
00:19:59to come in,
00:20:00and make a pit slot,
00:20:01round about lap 23,
00:20:04close up that gap,
00:20:05enough,
00:20:06to be able to pull away,
00:20:07from Piquet,
00:20:08when he has come in,
00:20:10and retain the lead,
00:20:11well,
00:20:12I'll give you the gap now,
00:20:13because there is Piquet,
00:20:14going through,
00:20:15having completed,
00:20:1610 laps,
00:20:17and he's about,
00:20:18halfway to his pit stop,
00:20:19if our guest,
00:20:21and it has to be,
00:20:22an educated guest,
00:20:23is right,
00:20:24Patrick Tombe,
00:20:26is now starting,
00:20:27to close up,
00:20:27on Elio de Angelis,
00:20:29and Lapis,
00:20:30the gap is,
00:20:3016.05 seconds,
00:20:33and as you see,
00:20:34Piquet,
00:20:35has put up,
00:20:35the fastest lap,
00:20:36so far,
00:20:371 minute,
00:20:3854,
00:20:39which is about,
00:20:40on target,
00:20:41for the warm up,
00:20:41session speed,
00:20:42which is about,
00:20:43on target,
00:20:44for the warm up,
00:20:45session speed,
00:20:46Alain Prost,
00:20:54is coming,
00:20:54into the pit,
00:20:56Alain Prost,
00:20:57who was in,
00:20:57fourth position,
00:20:58and there he is,
00:20:59is into the pit,
00:21:01we've seen this,
00:21:02so many times,
00:21:03this season,
00:21:04the French Grand Prix,
00:21:05was a notable exception,
00:21:07when the two Renaults,
00:21:08of Arnoux,
00:21:09and Prost,
00:21:09finished,
00:21:09first and second,
00:21:11but time after time,
00:21:12Grand Prix,
00:21:13after Grand Prix,
00:21:13we have seen the Renaults,
00:21:15have some trouble,
00:21:16or other,
00:21:17and come into the pit,
00:21:18during the race,
00:21:19after doing extremely,
00:21:20well in practice,
00:21:22well it looks as though,
00:21:23exactly the same thing,
00:21:24is happening again,
00:21:25and that means,
00:21:26that John Watson,
00:21:27is moving up,
00:21:28into fifth position,
00:21:30as he has,
00:21:31already done so,
00:21:32now Alain Prost,
00:21:33had all sorts,
00:21:34of problems,
00:21:35yesterday for instance,
00:21:36his race car,
00:21:38has the,
00:21:38near side rear,
00:21:40with the wheel,
00:21:40torn off,
00:21:41the off side,
00:21:42rear wheel,
00:21:42torn off him,
00:21:43in that dreadful crash,
00:21:45with Didier Pironi's Ferrari,
00:21:48he went out,
00:21:49in his car this morning,
00:21:50and had,
00:21:51some sort of a misfire,
00:21:53which they thought,
00:21:54they had put right,
00:21:55but it looks as though,
00:21:56in fact,
00:21:57the Renault personnel,
00:21:58have not been able,
00:21:59to put it right,
00:22:01now there,
00:22:02is Nelson Piquet,
00:22:04coming through,
00:22:05to complete his 12th lap,
00:22:06which I estimate,
00:22:08to be about halfway,
00:22:09to his pit stop,
00:22:11now Warwick,
00:22:11by the way,
00:22:12has lost two places,
00:22:13he's gone down,
00:22:15to 11th position,
00:22:17as Nelson Piquet,
00:22:18goes through,
00:22:19to complete lap 12th,
00:22:21yes it's really,
00:22:22I don't know,
00:22:23what's wrong,
00:22:23with the Renault team,
00:22:24this year,
00:22:25but really,
00:22:26a Grand Prix car,
00:22:27this of course,
00:22:28Prost was driving,
00:22:29the spare car,
00:22:30because although,
00:22:30they repaired,
00:22:31his race car,
00:22:32that got damaged,
00:22:32in that terrible accident,
00:22:33yesterday,
00:22:34they decided,
00:22:35not to run it,
00:22:35to press on,
00:22:36for setting up,
00:22:37the spare car,
00:22:38but it really,
00:22:39is a disgrace,
00:22:39with their resources,
00:22:42their money,
00:22:43and their commitment,
00:22:44to racing,
00:22:46and to doing property,
00:22:47should come here,
00:22:47and run a car,
00:22:48that misfires,
00:22:49I mean,
00:22:49it really is,
00:22:50a disgrace,
00:22:51it's not a,
00:22:54a strange thing,
00:22:56a shot in the dark,
00:22:57it's been happening,
00:22:57to them,
00:22:58at nearly every race,
00:22:59this year,
00:23:00and they must,
00:23:01really have,
00:23:02only themselves,
00:23:02to blame,
00:23:03for the fact,
00:23:04that they're not,
00:23:04right up at the front,
00:23:05leading the championship,
00:23:06because their car,
00:23:06has been wonderfully,
00:23:07quick everywhere,
00:23:08but they've had,
00:23:10all these lingering problems,
00:23:11that the organisation,
00:23:12must be in some sort,
00:23:13of disarray,
00:23:15well it may not,
00:23:16be a riveting struggle,
00:23:18for the lead,
00:23:19as we look at,
00:23:19Nelson Piquet,
00:23:21who has now,
00:23:21as you see,
00:23:22completed 12 laps,
00:23:23and is on his third lead,
00:23:25but it is a tremendous,
00:23:26interesting,
00:23:27and exciting,
00:23:28and significant one,
00:23:30because,
00:23:31I will say it again,
00:23:34Nelson Piquet,
00:23:34has got to build up lead,
00:23:37if he is not boxing,
00:23:39and if the Brabham team,
00:23:40is boxing,
00:23:41I say that,
00:23:42because of the British,
00:23:43draw three,
00:23:44when the Brabham team,
00:23:46made all the fuss,
00:23:47and rightly so,
00:23:48about refueling,
00:23:49they were in fact,
00:23:50boxing,
00:23:51and that is,
00:23:52one of the,
00:23:53Torbots,
00:23:54I don't think,
00:23:54Denny Cheevers,
00:23:55you can see him,
00:23:55kneeling,
00:23:56at the back of the car,
00:23:57and it looks as though,
00:23:58Cheever 2 is out of the race,
00:24:00but we found out,
00:24:01subsequently,
00:24:02that the Brabham team,
00:24:04were boxing,
00:24:04at the British Grand Prix,
00:24:05and they had never intended,
00:24:07Nelson Piquet,
00:24:08to come in,
00:24:09whereas he was definitely,
00:24:10going to come in,
00:24:11at the French Grand Prix,
00:24:12and we believe,
00:24:13he is going to do so,
00:24:15here,
00:24:15by the way,
00:24:16you will notice,
00:24:17as the drivers,
00:24:19go over the start line,
00:24:20that there is,
00:24:22a white tape,
00:24:23across the road,
00:24:24well,
00:24:25there's a bit of a humorous,
00:24:26story behind that,
00:24:27because the Brabham team,
00:24:29have laid a big,
00:24:30red and white stripe,
00:24:32from,
00:24:32the beginning of the pit,
00:24:34up to the exact point,
00:24:35where,
00:24:36Nelson Piquet,
00:24:36or Patresi,
00:24:37or both of them,
00:24:38will have to stop,
00:24:39and refuel,
00:24:40the Williams team,
00:24:42this morning,
00:24:43ran an extension,
00:24:44of that white tape,
00:24:45sideways,
00:24:46across the pit road,
00:24:47and into the Arco,
00:24:49needless to say,
00:24:50nobody thinks,
00:24:50any notice of it,
00:24:51but it got a good laugh,
00:24:52here today,
00:24:53now Nelson Piquet,
00:24:54that we are looking at,
00:24:55is leading,
00:24:56his second position,
00:24:57it is Patrick Tombe,
00:24:59and now,
00:24:59into the pit,
00:25:00comes Ricardo Patresi,
00:25:02who was in fourth position,
00:25:05now that is significant,
00:25:06because Patresi,
00:25:08in the Brabham BMW,
00:25:09there he is,
00:25:10is,
00:25:11is this a refuel job,
00:25:13no,
00:25:13it looks to me,
00:25:14as though the smoke,
00:25:15from the engine,
00:25:15needs those trouble,
00:25:16but it does at least,
00:25:17enable you to see,
00:25:18the way the Brabham,
00:25:19mechanics are kitted out,
00:25:21and Patresi is out,
00:25:23there,
00:25:24you see,
00:25:25Ricardo Patresi,
00:25:26out of his car,
00:25:27as the,
00:25:28BMW turbo engine,
00:25:30I presume,
00:25:31has blown,
00:25:32I don't think,
00:25:33it was anything else,
00:25:34there was that,
00:25:34hell-tale pump,
00:25:35the smoke from the back,
00:25:37he says,
00:25:38he's still running,
00:25:38when he came in,
00:25:39but whatever the trouble is,
00:25:40it's obviously terminal,
00:25:41they're wheeling the car,
00:25:42away,
00:25:43into the garage,
00:25:44to get the pit,
00:25:45clear and ready,
00:25:47the TK's,
00:25:48anticipated,
00:25:49scheduled stop,
00:25:50so,
00:25:51that's an unfortunate,
00:25:53thing for,
00:25:54Brabham,
00:25:55and their BMW engine,
00:25:56which has gone,
00:25:57very, very well,
00:25:58but still,
00:25:59still yet to find,
00:26:00full race reliability,
00:26:03you will recall,
00:26:06that it was,
00:26:07almost exactly,
00:26:08this situation,
00:26:08the French Grand Prix,
00:26:10except that Patresi,
00:26:11was in the lead,
00:26:12he came in,
00:26:13with his car,
00:26:14on fire,
00:26:15Nelson Piquet,
00:26:16that we're looking at now,
00:26:17in the lead,
00:26:18of the German Grand Prix,
00:26:19on lap 15,
00:26:20by 19 seconds,
00:26:22then took the lead,
00:26:23in the French Grand Prix,
00:26:24and,
00:26:25blew up,
00:26:27just one lap,
00:26:27before he was due,
00:26:28to come in,
00:26:29to make his pit stop,
00:26:36so,
00:26:37as we look,
00:26:37at Nelson Piquet,
00:26:39on lap 15,
00:26:40in the 45 lap race,
00:26:42therefore,
00:26:43it is one third race system,
00:26:45he is leading,
00:26:46by 19 seconds,
00:26:47from Patrick Tombé,
00:26:48in the Ferrari,
00:26:49in third position,
00:26:51it is Ronnie Arnoux,
00:26:52in fourth position,
00:26:53now,
00:26:54it is John Watson,
00:26:55in fifth position,
00:26:56it is Keke Rothberg,
00:26:57and in sixth place,
00:26:59it is for Caley Alvarez,
00:27:00that we are not,
00:27:03the first one,
00:27:04that we are not,
00:27:05the first one,
00:27:06and we are not,
00:27:06the first one,
00:27:07and we are not,
00:27:07the first one,
00:27:08and we are not,
00:27:08well,
00:27:09while this interview,
00:27:10goes on,
00:27:12the significant things,
00:27:13of course,
00:27:14are that Alain Prost,
00:27:16is obviously,
00:27:18out of the French,
00:27:19out of the German Grand Prix,
00:27:20the French driver,
00:27:22who finished second,
00:27:23in his own Grand Prix,
00:27:24and that is going,
00:27:25to make a big change,
00:27:26in the world championship,
00:27:28because,
00:27:28with Pironi,
00:27:30leading the world championship,
00:27:32and of course,
00:27:32out of it now,
00:27:33with his terrible leg injuries,
00:27:34as we look at Nelson Piquet,
00:27:37John Watson,
00:27:38who is leading,
00:27:39the world championship,
00:27:40five points ahead,
00:27:41of Alain Prost,
00:27:42who is out,
00:27:43of the race,
00:27:44and,
00:27:45six points ahead,
00:27:46of Nicky Lauda,
00:27:46who didn't start,
00:27:48John Watson,
00:27:49is in the points,
00:27:50in fourth position,
00:27:52so if John Watson,
00:27:53could keep going,
00:27:53where he is,
00:27:54or even improve,
00:27:55his position,
00:27:56he will be very much,
00:27:57improving,
00:27:58his world championship,
00:27:59chances,
00:28:00as Nelson Piquet,
00:28:01comes through,
00:28:02to complete,
00:28:03his 15th lap now,
00:28:05one third race,
00:28:06this is,
00:28:07and although,
00:28:08you can't see,
00:28:09Derek Warwick,
00:28:10who is currently,
00:28:10in ninth position again,
00:28:12I can tell you,
00:28:13that unfortunately,
00:28:14the Brian Hart,
00:28:15turbo engine,
00:28:17in the Tolman,
00:28:17is sounding,
00:28:18rather sick,
00:28:19let's hope it's,
00:28:20nothing too significant,
00:28:2215 laps,
00:28:32completed,
00:28:33by Nelson Piquet,
00:28:35number one,
00:28:35who is now,
00:28:36laughing Chico Serra,
00:28:38in the new,
00:28:39F9,
00:28:40Fittipaldi car,
00:28:41in Emerson Fittipaldi's team,
00:28:43the ex world champion,
00:28:45and,
00:28:46meantime,
00:28:47I look down,
00:28:48as you look at,
00:28:49Nelson Piquet,
00:28:50coming into the,
00:28:51second gear,
00:28:52Breps Curva 1,
00:28:53the first chicane,
00:28:55and goes up,
00:28:56into the off curve,
00:28:57which is right,
00:28:58at the top of this circuit,
00:28:59and then leads out,
00:29:00onto the 160 mile an hour,
00:29:02straight,
00:29:03down to the,
00:29:04second chicane,
00:29:06which was put in,
00:29:06to slow the cars down,
00:29:08so fast were they going,
00:29:10and they're now doing,
00:29:11some 160 miles an hour,
00:29:12down to 130 at this point,
00:29:14a daunting prospect,
00:29:18and,
00:29:19now,
00:29:19Nelson Piquet,
00:29:20coming through,
00:29:21to complete,
00:29:22his six feet left,
00:29:25very well in the lead,
00:29:26and I think,
00:29:26on schedule,
00:29:27to keep ahead,
00:29:28of Patrick Torbay,
00:29:29that you see,
00:29:29in the background.
00:29:32John Watson,
00:29:33meanwhile,
00:29:34is driving,
00:29:34a very good race,
00:29:35indeed,
00:29:36and,
00:29:36he's leading,
00:29:37the normally aspirated division,
00:29:39of the three litre cars,
00:29:41and he's got,
00:29:42quite a healthy lead,
00:29:43of some,
00:29:4413,
00:29:4512,
00:29:4513 seconds,
00:29:46over Kekki Rosberg,
00:29:48who's,
00:29:49leading the chasing group,
00:29:50in fifth place,
00:29:51and,
00:29:51Michele Alboreto,
00:29:53who's driving,
00:29:53so very well,
00:29:55this year,
00:29:55and he,
00:29:56of course,
00:29:56is third,
00:29:57in the,
00:29:57classy race,
00:29:59for,
00:30:00the,
00:30:00disadvantaged,
00:30:02three litre,
00:30:02normally aspirated cars.
00:30:04In the job player special,
00:30:29as we watch,
00:30:30Piquet,
00:30:31start another lap,
00:30:32into the right hander,
00:30:3417 laps completed,
00:30:37and as you can see,
00:30:37he's fairly streaking,
00:30:38through the field,
00:30:39that is the second place man,
00:30:41Patrick Torbay,
00:30:42who is now,
00:30:43some 23 seconds,
00:30:45behind Piquet,
00:30:46so it certainly does,
00:30:47look James,
00:30:48as though Piquet,
00:30:49is on half tank,
00:30:50and is on top half.
00:30:53Yes,
00:30:53I would think so,
00:30:54with that,
00:30:54considerable speed advantage,
00:30:56and,
00:30:56certainly from the,
00:30:58racing and entertainment,
00:31:00point of view,
00:31:00it very much looks,
00:31:01at his present rate,
00:31:03of progress,
00:31:04he may well,
00:31:04be able to pit stop,
00:31:05and get out,
00:31:06almost,
00:31:07if not,
00:31:08still in the lead,
00:31:09he would need,
00:31:10probably,
00:31:10a lead of probably like,
00:31:1235 seconds,
00:31:14for a fully,
00:31:15and then a very successful,
00:31:17pit stop,
00:31:18which is about,
00:31:19the sort of time,
00:31:19we could expect him,
00:31:20to lose on the road,
00:31:21and,
00:31:22at the moment,
00:31:24he's well on schedule,
00:31:24about 23 seconds,
00:31:26that are good already,
00:31:28and still,
00:31:29going away,
00:31:30at over a second,
00:31:30a lap,
00:31:31about a second,
00:31:31and a half a lap,
00:31:33he's averaging,
00:31:33which is,
00:31:34a pretty,
00:31:35convincing margin,
00:31:38Tambay there,
00:31:38just coming to the picture now,
00:31:40chasing,
00:31:41pretty forlornly,
00:31:42in second place,
00:31:43but,
00:31:43at the same time,
00:31:45he's working hard,
00:31:46to pull away,
00:31:46from René Arnau's,
00:31:48Renault,
00:31:49which,
00:31:49he's managed to do,
00:31:50he has about,
00:31:51five seconds,
00:31:52over the Renault,
00:31:53and then,
00:31:54after,
00:31:55following René Arnau,
00:31:55there's a pretty big gap,
00:31:56to John Watson,
00:31:57he's,
00:31:58nearly 30 seconds,
00:32:00behind René Arnau,
00:32:02which really,
00:32:03does,
00:32:03go to underline,
00:32:04the immense,
00:32:05superiority,
00:32:06of the turbocharged car,
00:32:08and,
00:32:08well,
00:32:09it's very,
00:32:09very impressive,
00:32:10it's a great shame,
00:32:11that we haven't got,
00:32:12a full field of cars,
00:32:13that have,
00:32:15at least,
00:32:15very similar,
00:32:16power output,
00:32:17and performance,
00:32:18because,
00:32:18when we think,
00:32:19of trade racing,
00:32:20it really hasn't,
00:32:21been very good,
00:32:22these last,
00:32:22three Grand Prix,
00:32:25well,
00:32:25the absence,
00:32:26the gap,
00:32:27between,
00:32:28Piquet,
00:32:29in the lead,
00:32:30and,
00:32:30Torbay in second place,
00:32:31in the Ferrari,
00:32:32you saw there,
00:32:33was 24 seconds,
00:32:34as Piquet,
00:32:35leaves the stadium,
00:32:37and goes into the first,
00:32:38long drag,
00:32:39through the forest,
00:32:39I've got the stopwatch,
00:32:41running on him,
00:32:41he's still,
00:32:42the fastest,
00:32:43one minute,
00:32:4354.035,
00:32:45an incredible,
00:32:46133 miles an hour,
00:32:48and the gap,
00:32:49between Piquet,
00:32:49and Torbay,
00:32:50is now up to,
00:32:5126 seconds,
00:32:53with Arnau,
00:32:55some six seconds,
00:32:56behind,
00:32:56Torbay in third position,
00:32:58John Watson,
00:32:59some 28 seconds,
00:33:00behind Arnau,
00:33:01in fourth place,
00:33:02Keke Rosberg,
00:33:0317 seconds,
00:33:04behind Watson,
00:33:05in fifth place,
00:33:06Michele Alboreto,
00:33:07six seconds,
00:33:08behind Rosberg,
00:33:09in seventh place,
00:33:10in sixth position,
00:33:13and out goes Piquet,
00:33:15my goodness,
00:33:16it seems,
00:33:17that the Brabham's,
00:33:18are fated,
00:33:18and he has hit,
00:33:20Elisteo Salazar,
00:33:21and he's furious,
00:33:22the Brazilian,
00:33:23and the Colombian driver,
00:33:26I couldn't help it,
00:33:27says,
00:33:27and take that,
00:33:28oh my goodness,
00:33:30well,
00:33:31Nelson Piquet,
00:33:32understandably,
00:33:33livid with rage,
00:33:35he has seen his chances,
00:33:36of winning,
00:33:37the German Grand Prix,
00:33:39literally spin out,
00:33:40and there's Bernie Eccleston,
00:33:42maybe being told,
00:33:43Elisteo Salazar,
00:33:45we only saw,
00:33:46the tail end of it,
00:33:47but,
00:33:48obviously,
00:33:49at the peak,
00:33:49Piquet out,
00:33:51Salazar out,
00:33:52and that means,
00:33:53to say,
00:33:53that Patrick Tolbe,
00:33:54in the Ferrari,
00:33:55leads his first Grand Prix,
00:33:57yes,
00:33:58and that really,
00:33:58is a tragedy,
00:33:59Piquet,
00:34:00of course,
00:34:01is absolutely serious,
00:34:02and I don't blame,
00:34:03if you're,
00:34:04to be pushed outside,
00:34:06in experience,
00:34:07that marker,
00:34:08is really,
00:34:09a tragic way,
00:34:10to lose the Grand Prix,
00:34:11it's happened to most of us,
00:34:13a lot of drivers,
00:34:14one time or another,
00:34:15here we see,
00:34:16how it happened,
00:34:17Piquet,
00:34:17going up the inside,
00:34:18to overtake,
00:34:20Salazar,
00:34:21Salazar,
00:34:24just driving into him,
00:34:26I mean,
00:34:26it's absolutely ridiculous,
00:34:27quite what Salazar,
00:34:29thought he was doing,
00:34:30and I have to say,
00:34:31that is an absolute disgrace,
00:34:33by Salazar,
00:34:34and I'm just about as angry,
00:34:36as I think Piquet is,
00:34:37because he's,
00:34:37he's robbed of the,
00:34:39of the only interest,
00:34:40in the race,
00:34:41once again,
00:34:42we're robbed of seeing,
00:34:42Bratton to the pits,
00:34:44and Salazar,
00:34:45really should be taken to task,
00:34:46over that,
00:34:47it was absolutely,
00:34:48disgraceful piece of driving,
00:34:50and Piquet,
00:34:51is totally justified,
00:34:53in however angry he gets,
00:34:55but I think,
00:34:55quite frankly,
00:34:56Salazar,
00:34:57is lovely not to be a police star,
00:34:58yes,
00:35:00yes,
00:35:00and Gunther Schmidt,
00:35:01the,
00:35:01the millionaire German,
00:35:03who owns the ATS,
00:35:04wheel concern,
00:35:05will be very,
00:35:06very unhappy,
00:35:07with,
00:35:08Wickelhock,
00:35:09out of the race,
00:35:10earlier on,
00:35:10and now,
00:35:11his second car,
00:35:12gone,
00:35:12because of that mistake,
00:35:14it looked as though,
00:35:15Salazar,
00:35:16missed his brakes,
00:35:17driving into,
00:35:18Nelson Piquet,
00:35:20but,
00:35:21whilst,
00:35:22we seem to be fated,
00:35:23as I said,
00:35:24never to see,
00:35:25this much-ported,
00:35:26grab of,
00:35:27pit stop,
00:35:28to take on fuel,
00:35:29and change tyres,
00:35:31with Patrese out,
00:35:32with Piquet out,
00:35:34Patrick Tombe,
00:35:34now leads,
00:35:36the German Grand Prix,
00:35:37on lap 20,
00:35:38and there is,
00:35:39the new leader,
00:35:42so Tombe leads,
00:35:44René Arnoux,
00:35:45in second place,
00:35:46some six seconds,
00:35:47behind,
00:35:48Tombe,
00:35:49now look for the yellow,
00:35:50and white Renault,
00:35:51coming round the,
00:35:52right hander there,
00:35:53there it is,
00:35:54and that's,
00:35:54Derek Warwick touring,
00:35:56Derek Warwick touring,
00:35:57in the turbo,
00:35:58Tombe leads,
00:36:00Arnoux second,
00:36:01Watson is up,
00:36:01into third position now,
00:36:03with four points,
00:36:04impressive prospect,
00:36:05Kenny Rosberg is four,
00:36:06Viqueli Alvareto is fifth,
00:36:09and up into the points,
00:36:10for the first time,
00:36:11for a long time,
00:36:12sixth position,
00:36:13Jacques Lapiche,
00:36:16seventh position,
00:36:17Derek Daly,
00:36:18Derek Warwick was up to eight,
00:36:20but looks as though,
00:36:20he is out of the race,
00:36:21as Patrick Tombe comes through,
00:36:23to complete another lap,
00:36:24in the lead,
00:36:25I'm still absolutely amazed,
00:36:27by Salazar's driving,
00:36:28because it was,
00:36:29as if he didn't know,
00:36:30the usual,
00:36:31problem with that,
00:36:32because they don't see,
00:36:33it's running,
00:36:33but I mean,
00:36:34he made room,
00:36:35for Piquet,
00:36:36and let him go past,
00:36:37and then attacked him up the rear,
00:36:39it was the most extraordinary thing,
00:36:40and it again,
00:36:42casts into question,
00:36:43the experience,
00:36:44and skills,
00:36:45of some of these,
00:36:46K&M drivers,
00:36:47who come in,
00:36:47they bring,
00:36:48finance for their own,
00:36:50they buy their drive,
00:36:53they don't earn,
00:36:55the drive,
00:36:56by their skill,
00:36:58and as I say,
00:36:59they pay for their,
00:36:59way to get in the car,
00:37:01and it certainly,
00:37:02costs,
00:37:03a lot of doubt,
00:37:04on the advisability,
00:37:05of doing that,
00:37:06because,
00:37:06Salazar,
00:37:07has just ruined,
00:37:09quite a lot of people's day,
00:37:11with,
00:37:12complete,
00:37:14idiot driving,
00:37:15and a very,
00:37:17very down-carred,
00:37:19grab-em pit crew,
00:37:20as we look at the new race leader,
00:37:22Patrick Tombe,
00:37:23has packed away,
00:37:24all air equipment,
00:37:26has removed,
00:37:27the fuel pressure lines,
00:37:28has removed,
00:37:29the pressurized fuel tanks,
00:37:31and have gone back,
00:37:32into their pit,
00:37:34as Derek Warwick,
00:37:35now,
00:37:35and we look at Tombe,
00:37:37Derek Warwick,
00:37:38is touring,
00:37:39into his pit,
00:37:40in a rather,
00:37:41thick sounding,
00:37:42which hopefully,
00:37:43we will see soon,
00:37:45as we look now,
00:37:46at Roberto Guerrero,
00:37:48who is soon,
00:37:49going to be lapsed,
00:37:49by this man,
00:37:50in the scarlet Ferrari,
00:37:51Patrick Tombe leading,
00:37:53and as you see,
00:37:54the gap,
00:37:55the upstand,
00:37:56between,
00:37:57this man,
00:37:57number 16,
00:37:58in second place,
00:37:59Rani Arnoux,
00:37:59and the race leader,
00:38:00is only,
00:38:01six seconds,
00:38:03but,
00:38:04that six seconds,
00:38:05has been built up,
00:38:06by Tombe,
00:38:07who caught,
00:38:08and passed,
00:38:08Arnoux,
00:38:09there's Tombe,
00:38:10disappearing,
00:38:11into the stadium,
00:38:12having already,
00:38:13earlier on,
00:38:14caught,
00:38:14and passed,
00:38:15Alain Croft,
00:38:16so,
00:38:17the Ferrari,
00:38:18is proving,
00:38:19to be quicker,
00:38:20than both the Renaults,
00:38:21there's the French,
00:38:21Grand Prix winner,
00:38:23Rani Arnoux,
00:38:24and on lap 21,
00:38:26it is Tombe first,
00:38:27Arnoux,
00:38:27that we're looking at,
00:38:28second,
00:38:29Watson,
00:38:30some 32 seconds now,
00:38:32and behind Arnoux,
00:38:33and the leading,
00:38:34three litre,
00:38:35non-turbo car,
00:38:36Ketty Rosberg,
00:38:37is fourth,
00:38:38Michele Alvareto,
00:38:39is in fifth position,
00:38:41sixth,
00:38:41is Lapiste,
00:38:43seventh,
00:38:43is Daly,
00:38:44eighth,
00:38:44Giacomelli,
00:38:45ninth,
00:38:45SchĂ¼rer,
00:38:46tenth,
00:38:46Henton,
00:38:47eleventh,
00:38:48Guerrero,
00:38:49twelfth,
00:38:49Ferrer,
00:38:50thirteenth,
00:38:50Purcell,
00:38:51fourteenth,
00:38:51Nigel Mansell,
00:38:53fifteenth,
00:38:53was Warwick,
00:38:54but now will be,
00:38:55De Angelis,
00:38:56and,
00:38:57he's the last runner,
00:38:59at the present moment,
00:39:00with,
00:39:00Salazar,
00:39:01very much,
00:39:02out of the race.
00:39:02Twenty-one laps completed,
00:39:09the leaders on their 22nd lap,
00:39:12in this 45 lap race,
00:39:14and,
00:39:15again,
00:39:16we've had this bitter disappointment,
00:39:18of seeing both Brabham,
00:39:19go out,
00:39:20before the half distance,
00:39:22but the interest now,
00:39:24and the excitement now,
00:39:25is,
00:39:26as we look at,
00:39:27Chico Serra,
00:39:28in the new,
00:39:29F9,
00:39:29Fittipaldi,
00:39:31the interest,
00:39:31and excitement is,
00:39:33will,
00:39:34Patrick Tombe,
00:39:35the man,
00:39:36from 10,
00:39:37number 27,
00:39:39win,
00:39:40his first,
00:39:40all three.
00:39:41It's his 53rd,
00:39:43the man,
00:39:44who has shipped for,
00:39:45in time,
00:39:46for McLaren,
00:39:47there he is,
00:39:48for Theodore,
00:39:49and now for Ferrari,
00:39:51the Can-Am champion,
00:39:52of 1977,
00:39:53and 1980,
00:39:54and Derek Warwick,
00:39:55is still keeping going.
00:39:58There's our new,
00:40:01second position,
00:40:04well spread out,
00:40:06there's the gap,
00:40:07the visual gap.
00:40:11Yes,
00:40:12well Tombe is,
00:40:13is well experienced,
00:40:14he's driven a lot of races,
00:40:15and he's been successful,
00:40:17probably more successful,
00:40:19the other side of the Atlantic,
00:40:20in North America,
00:40:21than there's ever been in Europe,
00:40:22but this looks,
00:40:24as well as if it could be his big day.
00:40:26He's got,
00:40:27a six second lead,
00:40:28over René Ardoux,
00:40:30but so,
00:40:31there's likely the race yet,
00:40:32you see,
00:40:32because as the race progresses,
00:40:34they're on different makes of cars,
00:40:36and Ferrari on the Guendiares tyres,
00:40:40the French Renault on a course there,
00:40:42French Michelin tyres,
00:40:43and wear patterns can change,
00:40:46and things,
00:40:46and we may get,
00:40:47get these two cars closing up,
00:40:50and let's hope we do,
00:40:51and get some sort of,
00:40:51a fight to the finish.
00:40:53And this engine that he's got now,
00:41:09will be far below that,
00:41:10the gap is increasing slightly,
00:41:12as you see,
00:41:136.6 seconds,
00:41:15so René Ardoux's tactics,
00:41:17I would imagine,
00:41:18must be,
00:41:20to hold station,
00:41:21to try to avoid dropping sacks,
00:41:24any further,
00:41:25and to hope,
00:41:26that something happens,
00:41:27to Patrick Tournbet's car,
00:41:29to stop it,
00:41:30so that he,
00:41:31Ardoux,
00:41:31could go through,
00:41:32and win,
00:41:33his second Grand Prix,
00:41:34in succession,
00:41:35and his form in all.
00:41:37Patrick Tournbet,
00:41:38lap 24,
00:41:3923 completed.
00:41:42He's got a little bit of a tussle,
00:41:44going on down the field,
00:41:45but Jacques Lafitte,
00:41:47has now caught,
00:41:48Getty Rosberg,
00:41:49and is having a little nibble,
00:41:50at him in the stadium here,
00:41:52but unfortunately,
00:41:52we're not seeing that,
00:41:53on the screen,
00:41:54but,
00:41:54it's still in the store,
00:41:56but,
00:41:58our good director,
00:41:59will have a look at it for us,
00:42:00because,
00:42:00the beat is still behind.
00:42:03Well,
00:42:04Ardoux,
00:42:05meantime,
00:42:05here he is,
00:42:06is in second place,
00:42:08and has lapped Guerrero,
00:42:10Brian Henton,
00:42:11by the way,
00:42:12is now in 10th position,
00:42:13Derek Daly,
00:42:14is in 7th place,
00:42:16John Watson,
00:42:16is still in 3rd position,
00:42:18we haven't seen him,
00:42:19as Patrick Thornberry,
00:42:22streak through,
00:42:22and Guerrero,
00:42:23is pulling off,
00:42:25is it Guerrero,
00:42:26or one of,
00:42:27I'm looking across the stadium,
00:42:28as you look at,
00:42:30Patrick Thornberry,
00:42:31and it's either Guerrero,
00:42:33or one of the,
00:42:33John Player Specials,
00:42:34it's one of the,
00:42:35John Player Specials,
00:42:36because I see Guerrero,
00:42:38just passing now,
00:42:40here is Patrick Thornberry,
00:42:41he is completing,
00:42:43now,
00:42:43his 24th lap,
00:42:45so shortly,
00:42:46you will see that number,
00:42:47in the top left stage,
00:42:48and there,
00:42:49is the,
00:42:50Fussell car,
00:42:51that is,
00:42:52Raul Fussell,
00:42:53the Brazilian driver,
00:42:55and see the way,
00:42:56the suspension,
00:42:57and the drive shaft,
00:42:58are being completely wrecked,
00:42:59as he drives home,
00:43:00on what remained,
00:43:01of his time,
00:43:02yes,
00:43:03that happens,
00:43:03when the tyre blows,
00:43:04and shreds,
00:43:06they do a fair bit of damage,
00:43:07around the back of the car,
00:43:08and as Murray said,
00:43:09he could see the wheel,
00:43:09flapping there,
00:43:10and he's done a fair bit of damage,
00:43:12to the rear suspension,
00:43:13so that,
00:43:13is a,
00:43:15good night's dip,
00:43:16for him,
00:43:17yes,
00:43:18but while we're looking,
00:43:19at a march,
00:43:20it is worth establishing,
00:43:21that Jochen Maas,
00:43:22the team leader,
00:43:23for the march concern,
00:43:25actually turned out,
00:43:26for practice,
00:43:27on Friday,
00:43:28but he had,
00:43:29three broken ribs,
00:43:30after that dreadful crash,
00:43:31he had,
00:43:32for the French Grand Prix,
00:43:33when he,
00:43:34and Mara Baldy,
00:43:36came together,
00:43:37he opted not to drive,
00:43:39Rupert Keegan,
00:43:40the British driver,
00:43:41who hadn't driven,
00:43:42for two years,
00:43:43this is Brian Henson,
00:43:44coming towards us,
00:43:44followed by,
00:43:45Solvay's about the lapis,
00:43:47Rupert Keegan,
00:43:47tries to qualify,
00:43:49the second march,
00:43:50but,
00:43:50failed to do so,
00:43:52and while,
00:43:53I'm talking about,
00:43:54people who fail,
00:43:55to qualify,
00:43:56it's worth establishing,
00:43:57too,
00:43:57that the,
00:43:58Formula 3,
00:44:00top man,
00:44:01in the British Championship,
00:44:02of 1982,
00:44:03Tommy Byrne,
00:44:05has taken over,
00:44:06the Theodore car,
00:44:07from Jan Lammers,
00:44:09he valiantly,
00:44:09tried to qualify,
00:44:11but,
00:44:12just failed,
00:44:13to do so,
00:44:14but there's plenty,
00:44:15of time for him,
00:44:16although he's a very,
00:44:16disappointed man,
00:44:17today,
00:44:18Patrick Tombey,
00:44:19leaning,
00:44:21almost at the end,
00:44:22of his 25th lap,
00:44:24in this 45 lap race,
00:44:27Rennie Arnoux,
00:44:28we just saw,
00:44:28quickly there,
00:44:29second,
00:44:30John Watson,
00:44:31that we have not seen,
00:44:32for a long time,
00:44:32in third position,
00:44:34Katie Rosberg,
00:44:35is four,
00:44:36Jacques Lampiet,
00:44:36is fifth,
00:44:37Michele Alvareta,
00:44:38is fixed,
00:44:39and Tombey,
00:44:40completes,
00:44:41lap 25,
00:44:41past,
00:44:42yes sir,
00:44:49the director,
00:44:51of the German television service,
00:44:52who's providing these pictures,
00:44:53has failed to pick up,
00:44:54the one battle,
00:44:54that's raging,
00:44:56the beat,
00:44:56has still failed,
00:44:57when they came past,
00:44:59this year,
00:44:59at start finish line,
00:45:00has still failed,
00:45:01to get past,
00:45:03Katie Rosberg,
00:45:05as yet,
00:45:05so there's a good,
00:45:06couple going on there,
00:45:07but,
00:45:07unfortunately,
00:45:09we might,
00:45:09might be resolved,
00:45:10before we pick it up,
00:45:11because the beat,
00:45:12once he gets by,
00:45:12will probably streak a ways,
00:45:14car's going very well today,
00:45:16yes,
00:45:17and we've said,
00:45:18some pretty harsh things,
00:45:19about the new,
00:45:20JS19,
00:45:22Talbot Matra,
00:45:23this year,
00:45:24and,
00:45:25it has deserved it,
00:45:27because it has not gone,
00:45:28at all well,
00:45:29for Jean-Pierre Jabouille,
00:45:32the Frenchman,
00:45:33who is the team manager,
00:45:35and ex-driver,
00:45:36in the Talbot,
00:45:37and Renault teams,
00:45:38has worked extremely hard,
00:45:40on the Talbot,
00:45:41and,
00:45:42was telling me,
00:45:42just before this race began,
00:45:44that they had revised,
00:45:45the suspension,
00:45:46and the skirts,
00:45:47and the springs,
00:45:48and the shock absorbers,
00:45:49on the JS19,
00:45:51Talbot Matra,
00:45:52and we're certainly,
00:45:53seeing the results,
00:45:54as Patrick Torbay,
00:45:55in the lead,
00:45:56goes through,
00:45:57the second,
00:45:58the third chicane,
00:46:00at the end,
00:46:01of his,
00:46:0126th lap,
00:46:03with 25,
00:46:04completed,
00:46:05he's coming up,
00:46:06to Brian Henton,
00:46:07to lap him,
00:46:07Brian Henton,
00:46:08in 10th position,
00:46:10who qualified,
00:46:11if my memory serves me,
00:46:12right,
00:46:12in 18th position,
00:46:14and look at that,
00:46:15enormous crowd,
00:46:16in the background,
00:46:17some 80,000 of them,
00:46:18sitting in this complex,
00:46:19and,
00:46:20when a German driver,
00:46:23does well,
00:46:23in a Formula One car,
00:46:26I'm told,
00:46:26that you can hear,
00:46:27the noise,
00:46:28of the shouting Germans,
00:46:29in the grandstand,
00:46:30above the noise,
00:46:31of the engine,
00:46:31behind you,
00:46:32well,
00:46:32now you're going to see,
00:46:34how quickly,
00:46:35a turbocharged Ferrari,
00:46:37in the hands,
00:46:38of number 27,
00:46:39Patrick Torbay,
00:46:40will go,
00:46:41in comparison,
00:46:42with an,
00:46:43un-turbocharged,
00:46:44non-turbocharged,
00:46:46three litre,
00:46:47Ford powered,
00:46:48Tyrrell,
00:46:48of Brian Henton,
00:46:50and Patrick Torbay,
00:46:51just drives,
00:46:52straight past,
00:46:53with no trouble,
00:46:54at all,
00:46:55there is Rennie Arnoux,
00:46:56going out of the stadium,
00:46:57in second place,
00:46:5926 laps completed,
00:47:01there's John Watson,
00:47:02we haven't seen him,
00:47:03for a long time,
00:47:04now,
00:47:04John Watson,
00:47:06winner,
00:47:06of the British Grand Prix,
00:47:08last year,
00:47:09who is leading,
00:47:10the world championship,
00:47:11is very,
00:47:12very handily,
00:47:13placed at the moment,
00:47:14to increase,
00:47:15his world championship lead,
00:47:18he's,
00:47:18when I say,
00:47:20leading the world championship,
00:47:21I'm being a little confusing,
00:47:22it is of course,
00:47:23Didier Pironi,
00:47:24who is actually,
00:47:25leading the world championship,
00:47:27nine points,
00:47:27ahead of Watson,
00:47:29and,
00:47:29John Watson,
00:47:31is the,
00:47:32leading runner,
00:47:34still effectively,
00:47:35in the world championship,
00:47:36he's on his way,
00:47:37if he can stay,
00:47:38where he is now,
00:47:40to score,
00:47:41four points,
00:47:42for third position,
00:47:43which would give him,
00:47:4434 points,
00:47:45which would,
00:47:46make him,
00:47:47second,
00:47:48in the world championship,
00:47:49behind,
00:47:49Didier Pironi,
00:47:50who would still,
00:47:51be leading,
00:47:52on at 39,
00:47:54but,
00:47:54Watson,
00:47:56who is ahead,
00:47:57of Alain Prost,
00:47:58who is effectively,
00:48:00out of the race,
00:48:00from the points situation,
00:48:01at the moment,
00:48:02and Nicky Lauda,
00:48:03who didn't even start,
00:48:05doesn't want to do,
00:48:06too much of that,
00:48:07running a bit wide,
00:48:08as he,
00:48:09goes through the chicane there,
00:48:10going up,
00:48:11onto the kerb,
00:48:12and the object,
00:48:13of the exercise,
00:48:13for John Watson now,
00:48:15who is the leading,
00:48:16three litre runner,
00:48:17must be,
00:48:18to stay where he is,
00:48:21that's a Williams car,
00:48:32is that,
00:48:33Kecky Rossberg's car,
00:48:34I wish I'd just have,
00:48:35a close look at it,
00:48:36it's Bailey's car,
00:48:38Derek Bailey,
00:48:39out of the race,
00:48:40Derek Bailey,
00:48:41who was in ninth position,
00:48:43in the Williams,
00:48:45is obviously,
00:48:46out of the German Grand Prix,
00:48:47with his car,
00:48:49parked by the side,
00:48:50of the circuit,
00:48:51with Bailey,
00:48:52not in it,
00:48:53he qualified,
00:48:54very badly,
00:48:55indeed,
00:48:55did Derek Bailey,
00:48:56down in 19th position,
00:48:58because he actually,
00:48:59lost a wheel,
00:49:00in practice,
00:49:01and drove in,
00:49:01on three wheels,
00:49:02much to everybody's constellation,
00:49:04and then had a misfire,
00:49:05in the spare car,
00:49:07so things were certainly,
00:49:08not going with him,
00:49:09in practice,
00:49:10equally,
00:49:10they are not obviously,
00:49:11going with him,
00:49:12in the race,
00:49:13but John Watson,
00:49:14on the other hand,
00:49:15in third position,
00:49:17is,
00:49:17nicely placed,
00:49:19to do well,
00:49:19in the German Grand Prix,
00:49:21and improve his chances,
00:49:23in the world championship,
00:49:24that's Kecky Rossberg,
00:49:26who is in fourth place,
00:49:27but where is Jacques Lafitte,
00:49:29ahead of him,
00:49:30ahead of him,
00:49:31Jacques Lafitte,
00:49:32has now got past,
00:49:34Rossberg,
00:49:35and is therefore,
00:49:37in fourth position,
00:49:38there is the finish driver,
00:49:39in the William,
00:49:40Petty Rossberg,
00:49:41and you just saw,
00:49:42a quick flash,
00:49:43of the blue,
00:49:45there it is,
00:49:46there is Jacques Lafitte,
00:49:48back where his driving talent,
00:49:50ought to enable him,
00:49:52to be,
00:49:52in the top six,
00:49:54in the top six,
00:49:56in the British Grand Prix,
00:50:04left the French Grand Prix,
00:50:06and he is having his first drive,
00:50:08since the British,
00:50:08not in the best of shape,
00:50:10Jacques Lafitte,
00:50:12fourth position,
00:50:14a little bit annoying,
00:50:15to have the JPS,
00:50:16in front of him,
00:50:17because,
00:50:18it's allowed,
00:50:19to take your own face,
00:50:20to catch up,
00:50:21the lead,
00:50:22that's,
00:50:23the beat is established,
00:50:24quite quickly,
00:50:25but he's safely through,
00:50:26and so he's,
00:50:27oh,
00:50:28oh,
00:50:29safely through,
00:50:30was completely wrong,
00:50:31he made a mistake there,
00:50:33he ran it wide,
00:50:33he managed to get the thing,
00:50:34back under control,
00:50:35so poor old Jacques Lafitte,
00:50:36one little slip,
00:50:37here we go,
00:50:39I don't know what happens here,
00:50:41he looks,
00:50:41oh,
00:50:41he got a big slide on,
00:50:42he got off,
00:50:43obviously,
00:50:43off the line,
00:50:44the corner gets very slippery,
00:50:46rubber dust,
00:50:46and things like that,
00:50:47which is not seen by the cars,
00:50:49and you just get the thing,
00:50:50out of shape,
00:50:51off that,
00:50:51that's exactly the place,
00:50:52where Nicky Lauda had his,
00:50:53active practice,
00:50:54also getting off line,
00:50:56but,
00:50:56no harm to Jacques Lafitte,
00:50:57as long as he didn't damage his skirt,
00:50:59when he,
00:50:59bumps over the earth there,
00:51:02and,
00:51:02except that he's now,
00:51:03got to start,
00:51:04deal with Keke Rosberg,
00:51:05all over again,
00:51:07well,
00:51:09Patrick Tornve,
00:51:10leads,
00:51:11on lap 30,
00:51:12out of 45,
00:51:14by 10 seconds,
00:51:15from René Arnaud,
00:51:16second,
00:51:17John Watson,
00:51:17third,
00:51:19Keke Rosberg,
00:51:20up to fourth position,
00:51:21Jacques Lafitte,
00:51:21down to fifth place,
00:51:22Michele Albarretto,
00:51:24in sixth position,
00:51:25and the last world championship point scorer,
00:51:27at the present moment,
00:51:28Bruno Giacomelli,
00:51:29in the Alfa Romeo,
00:51:30is seventh,
00:51:31Mark Shearer,
00:51:31in the arrows,
00:51:32eighth,
00:51:33Brian Hinton,
00:51:33is ninth,
00:51:34and Guerrero,
00:51:34sixth,
00:51:35Chico Serra,
00:51:3611,
00:51:36Mantle,
00:51:3712,
00:51:38Dering Warwick,
00:51:39well,
00:51:41he's out of the race,
00:51:42effectively,
00:51:42of course,
00:51:43but he's still scheduled,
00:51:45as being in 13th position,
00:51:47now,
00:51:48Jacques Lafitte,
00:51:48who you see,
00:51:49right in the background,
00:51:50of these five cars,
00:51:51lost four seconds,
00:51:53when he went off,
00:51:55in trying to keep ahead,
00:51:57and I think James's guess,
00:52:22that Jacques Lafitte,
00:52:24they well have damaged,
00:52:25these skirts,
00:52:26the near side skirt,
00:52:28of the Torbett,
00:52:30is right,
00:52:31now,
00:52:31if you wonder,
00:52:32what I'm talking about,
00:52:33when I talk about skirts,
00:52:34as Patrick Torbay,
00:52:35comes through,
00:52:36to complete his 30th lap,
00:52:38with 15 therefore to go,
00:52:40look at the gap,
00:52:41between the wheels,
00:52:42on the Ferrari there,
00:52:43it's difficult to see,
00:52:45that there is actually,
00:52:46a special compound,
00:52:48which drags along the ground,
00:52:50you can look underneath the car now,
00:52:52and if you imagine,
00:52:54the air rushing underneath it,
00:52:55and not able to escape,
00:52:56it actually creates,
00:52:57the downforce of the car,
00:52:59pulls it down,
00:53:00onto its tires,
00:53:02and enables it,
00:53:03to grip the road much better,
00:53:05so here is Patrick Torbay,
00:53:07on his 31st lap,
00:53:09coming up,
00:53:10to catch Bruno Giacomelli,
00:53:11the Italian driver,
00:53:14number 23,
00:53:15in the Alfa Romeo,
00:53:17who is in 7th position,
00:53:20there's Giacomelli,
00:53:24he's not had the best of seasons,
00:53:27comes from Italy,
00:53:31although he lives in Monaco,
00:53:33Giacomelli I'm talking about,
00:53:34as Mark Shearer,
00:53:35goes through in the arrows,
00:53:36and Giacomelli,
00:53:40an ex-Formula 2 champion of Europe,
00:53:42and there he is,
00:53:42the leader of these two cars here,
00:53:44actually led the Watkins Glen,
00:53:46American Grand Prix,
00:53:48in 1980,
00:53:49but this year,
00:53:50the best he has been able to do so far,
00:53:52his 9th position at San Marino,
00:53:54notwithstanding the fact,
00:53:58that the,
00:53:59Ducar Rouge,
00:54:00the French designer,
00:54:03Pierre Ducar Rouge,
00:54:04has produced a beautiful car,
00:54:07in the Alfa Romeo,
00:54:08but it's never quite lived up,
00:54:09to the promise that it shows,
00:54:12now,
00:54:17as you look,
00:54:18at Patrick Torbay,
00:54:20in the motodrome,
00:54:22on his 31st lap,
00:54:25almost at the end of it,
00:54:26you'll see the numbers change soon,
00:54:28indicating that 31 laps have been completed,
00:54:31by the leader,
00:54:32and he goes on to his 32nd lap,
00:54:34there it was,
00:54:36Alvaretto is starting to move up,
00:54:38through the field,
00:54:39the order now,
00:54:40is Tombe leading,
00:54:43by 12 seconds from Arnoux,
00:54:45John Watson is still in 3rd position,
00:54:48in 4th place,
00:54:49it is still Kekki Rosberg,
00:54:51but up into 5th place,
00:54:52has gone Michele Alvaretto,
00:54:54ahead of Jacques Lafitte,
00:54:55because indeed,
00:54:56Jacques Lafitte has damaged the skirt,
00:54:59yes,
00:54:59that's the problem,
00:55:00the skirts are made of a,
00:55:01very soft material,
00:55:02they run along the road,
00:55:03so if you go off,
00:55:04and bump them over,
00:55:04rocks and earth and things,
00:55:06they do damage very easily,
00:55:08and once the skirt is damaged,
00:55:10and it isn't doing its job properly,
00:55:11the cars lose a great deal of grip,
00:55:13and they really don't work very well,
00:55:15it absolutely depends,
00:55:16on,
00:55:17to get this huge amount of grip,
00:55:18that the modern cars now have,
00:55:20on their skirt,
00:55:21sitting nicely on the road,
00:55:23so,
00:55:24we,
00:55:24we'll have to expect,
00:55:25to fall back,
00:55:26and really struggle,
00:55:27now he may even come into pits,
00:55:28to change it.
00:55:30Well,
00:55:30it's a good time,
00:55:31to be talking about this,
00:55:32because you are looking at,
00:55:33in many ways,
00:55:34he's the driver of 1982,
00:55:36on the left,
00:55:36number three,
00:55:37Michele Alvareto,
00:55:38in the,
00:55:39unsponsored,
00:55:41Tyrell Ford,
00:55:42he's just passed,
00:55:43Nigel Mantle,
00:55:45he has gone ahead of Jacques Lapin,
00:55:46and up,
00:55:47or into fifth position,
00:55:50we'll take the gap,
00:55:52and see,
00:55:53now Michele Alvareto,
00:55:55has had a wonderful season,
00:55:56this is only his first,
00:55:58full year,
00:55:58at Grand Prix racing,
00:56:00this 25 year old man,
00:56:01is I think what happened,
00:56:13is he was a bit caught out,
00:56:15and it was,
00:56:16really a carbon copy,
00:56:17of how,
00:56:18he crashed on Friday,
00:56:19he went,
00:56:20he was overtaking another car,
00:56:22and he went up,
00:56:23he was laughing a back mark,
00:56:24and he went up,
00:56:25the inside of the track,
00:56:26rather than the normal line,
00:56:27as he approached the corner,
00:56:29and I suspect,
00:56:31what happened,
00:56:31is that he'd pick up dirt,
00:56:33then,
00:56:33on the dusty,
00:56:34side of the track,
00:56:35where it isn't used,
00:56:36the tyres are very sticky,
00:56:37they hold that dirt,
00:56:39and he turned into the corner,
00:56:40his tyres were,
00:56:41too slippery for him,
00:56:42and it took him,
00:56:43very much by surprise,
00:56:44as it did,
00:56:45for Nicky on Friday,
00:56:46so,
00:56:47the track is obviously,
00:56:48dirtier there,
00:56:49than they think,
00:56:49and it was a bit unfortunate,
00:56:51because he was actually,
00:56:52overtaking somebody,
00:56:53and,
00:56:53was driving a very,
00:56:54very good race,
00:56:55still then.
00:56:56Well,
00:56:57watch this,
00:56:57because it's Alvaretto,
00:56:59in fifth position,
00:57:00and you saw,
00:57:02just before they closed in,
00:57:04on Alvaretto,
00:57:05the white and green,
00:57:06Soudia Williams,
00:57:07of Keke Rosberg,
00:57:08who is in fourth position,
00:57:10now the gap,
00:57:11a lap or so ago,
00:57:12between Rosberg fourth,
00:57:14and Alvaretto,
00:57:14that we're looking at,
00:57:15in fifth position,
00:57:17was seven seconds,
00:57:18I suspect it is,
00:57:19less than that,
00:57:20now,
00:57:21in which case,
00:57:21of course,
00:57:22Alvaretto is gaining,
00:57:24and,
00:57:24in the running,
00:57:26for fourth position,
00:57:27and the Williams,
00:57:28just sounds,
00:57:29all that healthy,
00:57:30to me,
00:57:31as it goes past,
00:57:32and the gap now,
00:57:34is 7.75 seconds,
00:57:37so,
00:57:37the differential,
00:57:39is being maintained,
00:57:40but Alvaretto,
00:57:41is driving,
00:57:42a superb race,
00:57:44and this,
00:57:45is the man,
00:57:46who is,
00:57:47very much,
00:57:48being propositioned,
00:57:49by all sorts,
00:57:50of Formula One teams,
00:57:51this year,
00:57:52for 1983,
00:57:54including,
00:57:55it is rumored,
00:57:56Ferrari.
00:58:07Tremendous G-forces,
00:58:15around the,
00:58:16very,
00:58:17very fast bends,
00:58:19right hand bends,
00:58:21at the,
00:58:22Hockenheim ring,
00:58:23Alvaretto,
00:58:24into the chicane,
00:58:26nicks the car,
00:58:27through,
00:58:27this is the off curve,
00:58:28right at the top,
00:58:29of the circuit,
00:58:30he approaches it,
00:58:31at 160 miles an hour,
00:58:32now,
00:58:32there is,
00:58:33Keke Rosberg,
00:58:34if you've got,
00:58:35stopwatches running,
00:58:36make a note,
00:58:36of one car,
00:58:37passing a patch,
00:58:38on the circuit,
00:58:39followed by the other,
00:58:40as I have just done,
00:58:41and I can tell you,
00:58:42that the gap,
00:58:43is 7.33 seconds,
00:58:45so,
00:58:45Alvaretto,
00:58:46is closing,
00:58:47marginally,
00:58:48on Keke Rosberg,
00:58:49who is in,
00:58:50fourth position,
00:58:51and we're coming up,
00:58:52to the end,
00:58:53oh there's,
00:58:54there's Rosberg,
00:58:55there is,
00:58:56Alvaretto,
00:58:57Alvaretto,
00:58:58ahead of Nigel Mansell,
00:58:59and behind,
00:59:00is the scarlet Ferrari,
00:59:02number 27,
00:59:02of race leader,
00:59:03Patrick Torple.
00:59:06Into the stadium,
00:59:08Alvaretto,
00:59:10it's a,
00:59:11it's a very quiet,
00:59:12and restrained,
00:59:13crowd here today,
00:59:14they're not,
00:59:14seeing anything,
00:59:16to,
00:59:16spur their national,
00:59:17lifting fervor,
00:59:18that they get,
00:59:19when,
00:59:19it's a German driver,
00:59:21or a German car,
00:59:23or a German engine,
00:59:24out front,
00:59:25the gap,
00:59:26between Rosberg now,
00:59:28and Alvaretto,
00:59:29that we're looking at,
00:59:30which was,
00:59:317.33 seconds,
00:59:33is now,
00:59:347.73 seconds,
00:59:36so it looks,
00:59:36as though Alvaretto,
00:59:37can't really,
00:59:38do anything about it.
00:59:4735 laps completed,
01:00:00out of 45,
01:00:01we look at,
01:00:01the fourth place man,
01:00:03Keke Rosberg,
01:00:16and the next man in the picture,
01:00:18will be the fifth place man,
01:00:20Michele Alvaretto,
01:00:21but now,
01:00:22there,
01:00:22in the yellow and white,
01:00:24Renault,
01:00:25is Rani Arnoux,
01:00:26and the race order,
01:00:28on lap 36,
01:00:30is Patrick Tombe,
01:00:31in the Ferrari,
01:00:32who is 16 seconds,
01:00:33ahead of Rani Arnoux,
01:00:35in the Renault,
01:00:35in third position,
01:00:37it is John Watson,
01:00:39in the Barbara McLaren,
01:00:40in fourth position,
01:00:41Keke Rosberg,
01:00:42just ahead of,
01:00:43Michele Alvaretto fifth,
01:00:45and Jack Lafitte,
01:00:46one lap behind,
01:00:47in sixth position,
01:00:49in seventh position now,
01:00:51because,
01:00:51Jack Hanelli,
01:00:53in the Alfa Romeo,
01:00:54has moved up,
01:00:55into sixth position,
01:00:57and this should be him,
01:00:58coming towards us now,
01:01:00if it is,
01:01:00and if he maintains his position,
01:01:02and it is,
01:01:03it will be to score,
01:01:04his first world championship point,
01:01:07of 1982,
01:01:09because Jack Hanelli,
01:01:10the work driver,
01:01:11for Alfa Romeo,
01:01:12is one of the very few,
01:01:14regular Grand Prix drivers,
01:01:15this year,
01:01:16who has not yet,
01:01:17scored a point,
01:01:18he is about to be lapped,
01:01:19by the second place man,
01:01:21Rani Arnoux,
01:01:22who comes out,
01:01:22of his slipstream,
01:01:23and decides,
01:01:24to fall back in again,
01:01:25there is Jack Lafitte,
01:01:27behind him,
01:01:27this is Chico Serra,
01:01:28behind him,
01:01:29this is Mark Schurer,
01:01:30and you can see,
01:01:31the damning skirt,
01:01:33of Jack Lafitte's Talbot,
01:01:35the nearside skirt,
01:01:36between the front,
01:01:37and rear wheels,
01:01:37look at it very closely,
01:01:39oh we move away,
01:01:40is completely missing,
01:01:42so he must have,
01:01:42torn half of it off,
01:01:44when he went,
01:01:45round the right hand,
01:01:45have a look now,
01:01:46oh,
01:01:48well,
01:01:48here is Jack Hanelli,
01:01:49still not be passed,
01:01:53by Rani Arnoux,
01:01:55Arnoux going through,
01:01:57to complete,
01:01:58his 36 lap,
01:02:00something dangling,
01:02:02off the back,
01:02:02of Jack Hanelli's car,
01:02:04but it,
01:02:04it doesn't look like,
01:02:05anything very structural,
01:02:06looks like a piece of string,
01:02:08almost,
01:02:08or a wire,
01:02:09or something,
01:02:09just off the back,
01:02:10of his gearbox,
01:02:10well I've just noticed,
01:02:11on a couple of shots,
01:02:13but,
01:02:13he certainly doesn't seem,
01:02:15to be hampering his progress,
01:02:16he's really,
01:02:17motoring on very well,
01:02:18he's sending off the Renault,
01:02:19for a long way,
01:02:20of course,
01:02:20the Alfa Romeo,
01:02:21does have a very good engine,
01:02:22they've built,
01:02:23certainly the most powerful,
01:02:25of the normally hampering,
01:02:26three litre engine.
01:02:37Well,
01:02:37we don't know what happened,
01:02:38we didn't see,
01:02:39the first shot we saw,
01:02:40as the camera just went round,
01:02:42to his car,
01:02:43already crashed,
01:02:44apart,
01:02:44we don't know why,
01:02:45he crashed,
01:02:46but,
01:02:46really,
01:02:48it would be a tragedy,
01:02:49I have to suggest,
01:02:50that I think it's very,
01:02:51very unlikely,
01:02:52that John Watson,
01:02:54made a mistake,
01:02:55he was not in a hurry,
01:02:56he's a very experienced driver,
01:02:58and it would be,
01:02:59completely out of character,
01:03:00he's not a driver,
01:03:02given to making,
01:03:03unforced errors,
01:03:05it could have been,
01:03:05a tangle with a back marker,
01:03:07it could have been,
01:03:08a failure,
01:03:09of some sort,
01:03:10on the car,
01:03:10causing it to go out of control,
01:03:12but,
01:03:13whatever it was,
01:03:14that's tragedy,
01:03:15for John Watson and McLaren,
01:03:17because it was very,
01:03:18very important,
01:03:18to pick up points,
01:03:19in order to,
01:03:20maintain his challenge,
01:03:21to become,
01:03:22and his attempt,
01:03:23to become world champion,
01:03:24and that will really hurt,
01:03:25his chances.
01:03:25And that is,
01:03:27Jack Lafitte,
01:03:28in the pits,
01:03:29I don't know,
01:03:30whether he has had to give up,
01:03:31because of the skirt problem,
01:03:33or whether something else,
01:03:34has affected the tour,
01:03:35but,
01:03:36but for whatever reason,
01:03:37the German Grand Prix,
01:03:38is starting to fall apart,
01:03:40at the seams,
01:03:40in terms of,
01:03:41of contestants,
01:03:43left in it.
01:03:44We are now,
01:03:45on lap 38,
01:03:4739 now,
01:03:49with 38 completed,
01:03:51and this is the situation,
01:03:53Patrick Thornberry,
01:03:54is leading in the Ferrari,
01:03:56René Arnoux,
01:03:57by 20 seconds.
01:03:59Out has gone,
01:03:59John Watson,
01:04:00who was third,
01:04:01so up into third position,
01:04:02comes Rosberg,
01:04:03to fourth position,
01:04:04Alboreto,
01:04:05to fifth position,
01:04:07Giacomelli,
01:04:08and into sixth position,
01:04:09Mark Shearer,
01:04:10in the Arrows.
01:04:12Brian Hinton,
01:04:13will be seventh,
01:04:14Roberto Guerrero,
01:04:15in,
01:04:16Nigel Mansfield,
01:04:17ninth,
01:04:17and Chico Serra,
01:04:18tenth.
01:04:19Gerig Warwick,
01:04:20is two laps adrift,
01:04:21at the present moment,
01:04:22in seventh place,
01:04:23and those are,
01:04:25the only runners,
01:04:26because Gerig Daly,
01:04:27who has completed,
01:04:29the longest distance,
01:04:30of those who has,
01:04:30already stopped,
01:04:31was in,
01:04:33twelfth position,
01:04:33but now,
01:04:34out of the race.
01:04:35So,
01:04:35Patrick Thornberry,
01:04:36on lap 39,
01:04:39passes,
01:04:40John Watson's car,
01:04:42and,
01:04:43what is this going to do,
01:04:44for the world championship?
01:04:45Well,
01:04:46Pironi,
01:04:47non-started,
01:04:48of course,
01:04:48we are looking now,
01:04:50at Thornberry,
01:04:50closing up,
01:04:51on the new,
01:04:52third place man,
01:04:53the lap is,
01:04:54Cickey Womberg,
01:04:56and in world championship terms,
01:04:58John Watson adds,
01:04:59nothing to his score,
01:05:00Alain Prost adds,
01:05:02nothing to his score,
01:05:03Mickey Lauda didn't start,
01:05:05Cickey Womberg,
01:05:06on the other hand,
01:05:07who was,
01:05:08in fifth position,
01:05:10he didn't work,
01:05:10fifth position,
01:05:11in the world championship,
01:05:12with 23 points,
01:05:14should be adding,
01:05:15four,
01:05:16to give him,
01:05:1727,
01:05:17and that will help,
01:05:18he bumps into,
01:05:19I estimate,
01:05:20third position,
01:05:21but,
01:05:22this,
01:05:22is,
01:05:23the picture you see,
01:05:25of Patrick Thornberry,
01:05:27car number 27,
01:05:2933 years old,
01:05:30the man,
01:05:31who said,
01:05:31in South Africa,
01:05:32at the beginning of this year,
01:05:34when he was due,
01:05:35to drive,
01:05:37for the,
01:05:38arrows team,
01:05:40that,
01:05:40he wished to have,
01:05:41nothing more to do,
01:05:42with Formula One,
01:05:43because he was,
01:05:44so disgusted,
01:05:45with,
01:05:45the driver's strike,
01:05:46in South Africa,
01:05:47and the resultant politics,
01:05:49well,
01:05:50he,
01:05:50took,
01:05:51a long rest,
01:05:53in America,
01:05:54at his,
01:05:54Los Angeles home,
01:05:56reconsidered things,
01:05:57when he was off,
01:05:58at this plum,
01:05:59Ferrari drive,
01:06:01after the tragic death,
01:06:02of Gilles Villeneuve,
01:06:03in that awful,
01:06:04practice crash,
01:06:05at the Belgian Grand Prix,
01:06:06and then,
01:06:08Patrick finished,
01:06:09eighth,
01:06:09in his first Grand Prix,
01:06:11for Ferrari,
01:06:12in Holland,
01:06:13in the British Grand Prix,
01:06:14only his second,
01:06:15Ferrari race,
01:06:16a magnificent,
01:06:17third position,
01:06:18in his third,
01:06:19Grand Prix,
01:06:20for Ferrari,
01:06:21in France,
01:06:21two weeks ago,
01:06:22fourth position,
01:06:23and it looks now,
01:06:24as though he's going to win,
01:06:25the German Grand Prix,
01:06:27he is on his,
01:06:28fortieth lap,
01:06:29on his way to,
01:06:30nine points,
01:06:31lapping,
01:06:32soon,
01:06:32Kekki Rosberg,
01:06:33who is in,
01:06:34third position,
01:06:40well,
01:06:41what's the plan,
01:06:41of action James,
01:06:42if you're in,
01:06:43this position,
01:06:44coming up to complete,
01:06:45your fortieth lap,
01:06:46with five to go,
01:06:47with a very secure,
01:06:48lead,
01:06:49yes,
01:06:49twenty seconds lead,
01:06:50is a very big lead,
01:06:52you just,
01:06:52your entire operation,
01:06:54of course,
01:06:55is just to keep out of trouble,
01:06:56keep your nose clean,
01:06:58don't get tangled,
01:06:59with back markers,
01:07:00there's no reason,
01:07:01to hurry to pass,
01:07:02so it's got many times,
01:07:03one holds you up a bit,
01:07:04and of course,
01:07:05with the power of the Ferrari,
01:07:07it's made very much easier,
01:07:08for També,
01:07:09and really,
01:07:12keep the concentration,
01:07:13going well,
01:07:14because it's the easiest time,
01:07:15to make a mistake,
01:07:16is when you're not driving,
01:07:17absolutely flat out,
01:07:18and you're,
01:07:19taking things a bit easier,
01:07:21so when you're leading a race,
01:07:22when you're,
01:07:23of course,
01:07:23not going absolutely flat out,
01:07:24you don't want to strain the car,
01:07:25you want to,
01:07:26nurse it,
01:07:27put as little strain,
01:07:28on everything as possible,
01:07:29don't use the full roads,
01:07:30of the engine,
01:07:31and that sort of thing,
01:07:33don't throw it about,
01:07:33too much in the corners,
01:07:34and then,
01:07:36as I say,
01:07:36your most biggest problem,
01:07:38is to keep your concentration,
01:07:39absolute charge,
01:07:40and that's the thing home,
01:07:42but it's really a shame,
01:07:43we've had such a processional,
01:07:45race today,
01:07:46so,
01:07:47and then,
01:07:48the També,
01:07:50is following,
01:07:50Stecki Rosberg,
01:07:51who's the third policeman,
01:07:53and he's about to lap him,
01:07:54and that rather underlies,
01:07:56the now very big gap,
01:07:58we've got between,
01:07:59the També charge cars,
01:08:02and the normally aspirated,
01:08:03and it does come to the point,
01:08:06where I think that Formula 1,
01:08:07has got to look pretty carefully,
01:08:08about changing their regulations,
01:08:10to try and get,
01:08:11get it a bit more equal,
01:08:12because,
01:08:13as we've seen now,
01:08:14the third race running,
01:08:15where we've basically been faced,
01:08:18with a crushing bore,
01:08:19as far as close motor racing,
01:08:20is concerned.
01:08:22Well,
01:08:23let us say this,
01:08:24that,
01:08:24if there was one thing,
01:08:26that the desperately downcast,
01:08:28Ferrari team needed,
01:08:30it is what,
01:08:31it was,
01:08:32what is happening now,
01:08:33because,
01:08:34they were just about,
01:08:36recovering,
01:08:37from,
01:08:37the,
01:08:38dreadful death,
01:08:39of their,
01:08:40much beloved,
01:08:41Gilles Villeneuve,
01:08:43with Didier Pironi,
01:08:44taking over the range,
01:08:45and doing extremely well,
01:08:47when,
01:08:48yesterday's Ferrari tragedy,
01:08:50had almost,
01:08:51exact replica,
01:08:52of what had happened,
01:08:53to Gilles Villeneuve,
01:08:54but,
01:08:55thankfully,
01:08:56with far less severe results,
01:08:57although,
01:08:58heaven knows,
01:08:58severe enough,
01:08:59and,
01:09:00they were really,
01:09:01down in the dumps,
01:09:02last night,
01:09:03and they got their act,
01:09:04together this morning,
01:09:05I was watching them,
01:09:06in the warm-up,
01:09:07and they were going,
01:09:07through all their procedures,
01:09:09I won't say,
01:09:10with obviously,
01:09:11less enthusiasm,
01:09:12here,
01:09:12but I know,
01:09:13that obviously,
01:09:14they were desperately miserable,
01:09:16now,
01:09:16they are seeing,
01:09:18as,
01:09:18Patrick Torme,
01:09:19comes through,
01:09:20to complete,
01:09:21his 41st lap,
01:09:23you'll see the number,
01:09:24change shortly,
01:09:25the prospect,
01:09:26of,
01:09:27Ferrari,
01:09:27winning again,
01:09:29because,
01:09:30Pironi,
01:09:31won in Holland,
01:09:33Pironi,
01:09:33won in San Marino,
01:09:35they have had,
01:09:35two victories this year,
01:09:37and,
01:09:38so have,
01:09:39Barbara McLaren,
01:09:41so have,
01:09:42the Brabham,
01:09:44organization,
01:09:45so,
01:09:45Ferrari,
01:09:46will be moving ahead,
01:09:48but in terms,
01:09:48of the manufacturers,
01:09:50championship,
01:09:50as we watch,
01:09:51Patrick Torme,
01:09:52closing,
01:09:53on Keki Rosberg,
01:09:54Torme,
01:09:55the race leader,
01:09:56and there,
01:09:57is René Arnoux,
01:09:58in second place,
01:09:59as far as,
01:10:00the manufacturers,
01:10:01championship,
01:10:01is concerned,
01:10:03Ferrari,
01:10:03will move,
01:10:04into the lead,
01:10:05at the end,
01:10:06of this race,
01:10:06assuming,
01:10:07that Patrick Torme,
01:10:08wins it,
01:10:09because,
01:10:10when the German,
01:10:10Grand Prix,
01:10:11began,
01:10:11and Torme,
01:10:13is now ahead,
01:10:13of Keki Rosberg,
01:10:15when the German,
01:10:16Grand Prix,
01:10:17began,
01:10:18Ferrari,
01:10:18were two points,
01:10:19behind,
01:10:20the McLaren Ford,
01:10:22team,
01:10:22as far as,
01:10:23the manufacturers,
01:10:24championship,
01:10:24was concerned,
01:10:25and they will now,
01:10:26be moving ahead,
01:10:27and they will now,
01:10:42and it must be very unlikely,
01:10:43He now is on his 43rd lap. He has two laps only to go at the end of this one.
01:10:50It would be bitter at all if anything happened to the car and it must be very unlikely
01:10:55because as a generalisation, if a turbo engine these days gets the half distance, it will do the whole distance.
01:11:04There appears to be nothing wrong with the suspension or the handling of the car
01:11:09which was designed incidentally by the British Dr. Harvey Fossilguet
01:11:15who now lives out in Maranello working for the Ferrari organisation.
01:11:19And last year's car which had a very, very evil reputation for handling
01:11:24has been absolutely transformed by the work that Harvey Fossilguet has done on it
01:11:30and in combination with the reliable and tremendously powerful V6 turbocharged Ferrari engine
01:11:36has very much made it a winner.
01:11:39Patrick Tombe then, this is the end, or very shortly will be, of his 43rd lap as he goes into the Saks curve
01:11:56in front of those 80,000 Germans. That's the 2nd gear bend, exhilarates away now, changes up into 3rd gear
01:12:03for the Nelk curve, now the Opel curve which leads its turn into the start and finish straight.
01:12:10Watch the number change to 43. Now, and Patrick Tombe is on his 44th and last lap but one.
01:12:21He's ahead of Teddy Rothberg and the positions are Torme leading by 16, 17 seconds from René Arnoux in 2nd position in the Renault.
01:12:38You may see, although I think the director will naturally be favouring the Ferrari in the closing stages of the race,
01:12:45you may see the Renault of René Arnoux who looks as though he has overcome his bad luck kinks which affected him so much this year
01:12:56because having won the French Grand Prix, finished 3rd in South Africa, there are the positions after 42 laps.
01:13:07Torme leading Arnoux with Rosberg 3rd, Alboreto 4th, Giacomelli 5th and Mark Shearer scoring a welcome point for the Arrows team.
01:13:17Giacomelli towards us now, Torme towards us on his 44th lap.
01:13:23Keki Rosberg, as James has pointed out, holding on and I'm sure that that is because Torme is going slower
01:13:30rather than because Rosberg is going faster because I'm sure Keki too will be driving for points.
01:13:38He's in 5th position in the World Championship with 23 points and he's in the running for 4 points now if he finishes in 3rd position.
01:13:48Into the stadium for the last time but one, Patrick Torme and we will soon be able to go round on what should be his last then victorious lap.
01:13:59On his way to his first Grand Prix victory.
01:14:04Yes, Torme has tentatively and correctly slayed right down because Freddie Arnoux has closed the gap up a fair bit in the last few laps.
01:14:13He's gone backwards towards him by a good 5 or more seconds.
01:14:21A good work and like win for Patrick Torme. He's driven of a steady race, the car has worked perfectly for him and the main opposition, he's beaten the Renault's fair and square, of course Cross was out early on.
01:14:37And very sound victory for Ferrari because had they had Peroni or a number 1 driver, the Ferrari would be a lot of Peroni-dominated crashes and the car is obviously going very well indeed now.
01:14:52Mind you the turn of speed of the Brambier W was once again amazingly impressive and it was only that ridiculously bad piece of driving by Salazar taking out Nelson Piquet that stopped him going towards what was looking like a very comfortable victory for Piquet assuming that all went well with his supposed pit stop but he was certainly piling on the gap fast enough to be able to do a pit stop and pull away.
01:15:19So here comes Patrick Torme down the last main straight with a chicane in the middle of it for the last time who he could just without pushing for the finish line from now.
01:15:29Well a wonderful imminent victory, the first one for Patrick Torme and the 70 something I think for Ferrari in their long Grand Prix history and never was a win more merited by either firm or driver.
01:15:45Torme into the stadium for the last time and I can see Italian flags waving in the background. There is an enormous cheer as Torme goes into the Saks curve for the last time to the Elf and Opel curve.
01:16:00There is Kiki Rosberg who will come home and finish last in third position. The chequered flag is going out, the Ferrari mechanics are already out in the road and Patrick Torme has won the German Grand Prix, his first win in his career.
01:16:17Never was a win more deserved and that will really get the Ferrari tails up. Ready or new finishing in second position. In third position as we know, Kiki Rosberg who has been left.
01:16:29Kiki Rosberg who has been left.
