00:00:00Silverstone, England. Just the name causes a heartthrob in international motorsports
00:00:05fans worldwide. Beginning its high-performance life during World War II as a military airfield,
00:00:11the legacy is steeped with brave accounts of men and machines. In 1948, the land, people,
00:00:17and equipment turned from the sky to perfect the fine art of flying on the ground. Since
00:00:23then, Silverstone has been the home of motor racing in England. Success in motorsports to
00:00:29people of Great Britain is a very high priority. It can still be said that the sun never sets on
00:00:35British designed and built racing equipment. For over 30 years, they have dominated the construction,
00:00:42sale, and export of winning race cars to points all over the globe. To illustrate how popular
00:00:49auto racing is in England, since 1950, 11 British drivers have won 113 Grand Prix with 10 world
00:00:58champions. The next closest nationality are the Argentinians, with three drivers scoring 38 wins
00:01:05and five titles. This is John Bisignano at Silverstone, England, located 60 miles northwest of London,
00:01:13bringing you the ESPN coverage of the British Grand Prix for Formula One racing cars. Please join Brian
00:01:20Kreisky and me for a detailed look at this international motor racing classic.
00:01:24I'm Brian Kreisky and I'll be commentating for you throughout the weekend of the British Grand Prix.
00:01:31First of all, we'll take you around the 2.93 mile Silverstone Grand Prix circuit. We come on to the
00:01:37start-finish straight. The cars were snatched fifth gear just under the bridge momentarily, coming up
00:01:42towards Cox Corner. This is taken in third gear at about 125 miles per hour. Then it's back now on the power,
00:01:49turning the steering at the same time. After the exit from Cox is up to fourth, then fifth gear for
00:01:55Maggots Curve. Through Maggots Curve we've gone onto the brakes again, just inside the 100 meter side,
00:02:00before going into the right hand with Beckett's. This is probably the slowest corner on the circuit.
00:02:05That was taken in third, but still at 110 miles an hour. From Beckett's through Chapel Curve,
00:02:10flat out about the very fast hanger straight in fifth gear. Here, speeds attained of 175 miles per hour.
00:02:18Down into fourth gear at 10,800 RPM, which is nearly 150 miles an hour, through so we've gone.
00:02:24Along the short straight up towards Club Corner, which is one of the most difficult corners on the circuit.
00:02:29There is a funny crest in the middle, which makes the car go very light. Up into fourth, then fifth gear,
00:02:35towards Abbey Curve. Through Abbey Curve we go. Flat left-hand corner, and this is the fastest part
00:02:42of the circuit, with speeds topping 190 to 200 miles an hour. We brake very heavily for the Woodcut
00:02:48chicane. Taken in third gear, 11,000 RPM, but still 130 miles an hour, and out onto the start-finished
00:02:56straight. That was a lap average of 1 minute 17, an average speed of 135 miles an hour.
00:03:02Never before in the history of Formula One have so many different engines contested the World
00:03:06Championship. Currently, there are nine distinctive designs, all running their hearts out for this
00:03:12year's title. Now, for the past 17 years, the Ford Cosworth has been extremely successful. Beginning in 1967,
00:03:21it has entered 230 racing events, winning 155 of them. That means the Ford Cosworth has enjoyed victory
00:03:30in 65 percent of the races entered for the last 17 seasons.
00:03:37This example from the Benetton-Terrell team is the latest Ford Cosworth DFY. It is a V8,
00:03:43normally aspirated, fuel-injected motor, giving 520 horsepower from 3,000 cc's.
00:03:50It has only been in the past few seasons that this engine has been somewhat
00:03:54overpowered by the turbocharged approach. It was Renault that pioneered the arrival and perfection
00:04:01of turbocharged motors in Grand Prix racing. They use a V6 twin-turbo system that develops 580 horsepower
00:04:11from a mere 1,500 cc capacity at a screaming red line of 11,500 RPM.
00:04:18Now, the rules allow for either a 3-liter normally aspirated engine or a 1.5-liter turbo.
00:04:26It wasn't long after Renault proved a turbocharged F1 motor can be made reliable and a Grand Prix winner
00:04:33that the prancing horse of Ferrari entered with their design. Again, the V6 layout with twin turbos
00:04:41producing some 600 horsepower at 11,800 RPM, all from that tiny, magical 1.5 liters.
00:04:50To show the wide variations in designs, BMW chose the approach of a straight four-cylinder single turbo.
00:04:57The highly efficient, less complicated engine produces 580 horsepower and red lines at 10,800 RPM.
00:05:06It is the lightest Grand Prix motor in competition, weighing in at just under 300 pounds.
00:05:13Now, when you have nine different engines contesting one championship, two things come to mind.
00:05:19First of all, it's the factory-supported teams that are winning races. And secondly, there hasn't been
00:05:24one design come forward as being the only way to go. The bottom line is close, competitive,
00:05:31factory-supported, international motor racing, bringing great enjoyment to millions of fans worldwide.
00:05:48How was the Frenchman's practice? I am happy with the car because it's a new car and
00:05:54it's much better than the old car because it's possible to brake later and it's good for the weight
00:06:03also. And I am happy also with the racing tires. It must be difficult to come to a circuit with a new car.
00:06:10Yes, it's difficult, but we work very hard with Ferrari and we test this car in the Fiorano track
00:06:20many times. And I think it's the first time for this car, for the race, for the official practice anyway.
00:06:28And I think after this race is very important because it's necessary also to work and we know much better
00:06:38the car. Is it difficult to have to race your own teammate, Patrick Tambay? No, no, it's good. It's good
00:06:44because it's a very good ambient in Ferrari and I am very happy to be near Patrick Tambay because there
00:06:55is no problem and this is very important to the two drivers go work together. And for the moment, it's perfect.
00:07:05Thank you and best of luck for the rest of the weekend and the rest of the season. Thank you very much. Bye-bye.
00:07:10Making it an all red front row here at Silverstone, second quick is Patrick Tambay with the second Ferrari
00:07:16with a one lit 10.104 second. We're with Patrick Tambay, who is currently second in the championship.
00:07:24Patrick, you're one of the drivers in Formula One that has a great deal of experience racing in the United
00:07:29States. How do you compare the two? Well, my experience in the States is really only basically
00:07:36road racing and Can-Am. I don't have an Indy champ car experience. I'd like to and I will eventually
00:07:43when I retire from Grand Prix racing. It's one of my goals and I'm looking forward to that. It's
00:07:49very different in some ways and very similar in some others. So you got to get in a car and go as
00:07:57fast as possible, but there's also the atmosphere around it. And I like the US way of life and the
00:08:06atmosphere in the sportive atmosphere among the different races in the States. Now, you're second
00:08:13in the championship currently and one of your biggest competitors is your teammate. How does that work out
00:08:17within the team when you have to race within yourselves? Well, we belong to a team that is in
00:08:26fact giving us both the same equipment. There's no favorite and this is very good in the sense that
00:08:34you just can give your best and go all out and know that the only competition therefore is going to be
00:08:41within yourself. I can only be beaten by myself. If I don't do the things right at the end of the day,
00:08:47I'm going to be behind my teammate. My teammate or the others, it's the same as long as you can get
00:08:52the same equipment and Ferrari gives us the same equipment. With only one lap to put in your best
00:08:57time at qualifying, do you find yourself taking some extra risk that you might not if you had a tire
00:09:02that could go longer than that? Yes, obviously that's the problem. That's what created a very tragical
00:09:10accident last year with Gilles and you do want to take as many chances as you can on your set,
00:09:16your one set of qualifying tasks, but there's nothing that you can do to, there's no system to
00:09:23control the qualifying and at the moment it's a little bit of a problem. And your chances here
00:09:30at Silverstone, how do you feel about a victory being in sight here? They're always very good at the start
00:09:36of a race, but you can't really foresee it. I, I'd like to get into the race and go to the finish and
00:09:41then do my, my count at the end of it. Third quickest is the current world championship leader,
00:09:47Frenchman Alain Prost with the Renault Turbo. He went round in a one minute 10.170 second lap.
00:09:54We're with Alain Prost, who's the number one driver for the Renault team and is currently leading the
00:09:59world championship. Alain, this season you're teamed up with an American driver, Eddie Cheever.
00:10:06How is he to work with, within the team? He's much better than all his teammates.
00:10:13This year with Eddie, we did a good improvement on the car. We did a good, good job. I think he's,
00:10:20he has good ambition. He's very competitive, very quick, very fast. And I think he, he wants to,
00:10:27to win a race as soon as possible. And it's, it's very good for me because he works a lot and he,
00:10:32he likes to work. That is a big difference between last year.
00:10:36What do you think your chances are on this turbo circuit here?
00:10:39Uh, yeah, it's, it's, it's very difficult to, to say something because a lot of cars can win this
00:10:47race and it's very difficult to race for, not for the drivers, this one, but for the, for the engines.
00:10:52And it's very difficult to finish the race here. Last, uh, two years ago, I have the best car for
00:10:58this kind of track, but I had a problem with the engine. And I think, uh, I hope to, to win the race,
00:11:04but I think it could be a fight between, uh, Ferrari, Brabham and us. It's the same than the last races.
00:11:09And, uh, I think, uh, I finished all, all the races, all the races in the beginning of the season,
00:11:15so I have a bit more confidence than all the drivers because I know that we find a good
00:11:21reliability of the car. But I am, I am never very, very confident.
00:11:26Alan, what do you think of the pit stop situation in Formula One now with the cars coming in to take on
00:11:33fuel and tires? It's, uh, it's a good, uh, good thing for the spectators and telespectators because
00:11:39it's very interesting, but it's very dangerous for the drivers and more and more for the, for the
00:11:44mechanics because we can enter very quickly into the pits and, uh, uh, you know, we, we're just, uh,
00:11:52between all the people and it's, uh, it's very dangerous. Would you feel you'd be at a more of a
00:11:57disadvantage with having to carry more fuel, more weight, having different tires? Yeah,
00:12:02it's a disadvantage for the turbo engine. I think this year with, uh, the rule like, uh, last year
00:12:09or next year, for example, uh, without pit stop, it's, it could be, uh, a good opportunity for KK
00:12:15Rosberg with his Williams to be, to fight with, with us because, uh, some races, uh, we won some races,
00:12:22that I'm sure we can't win with, uh, uh, without pit stop. A surprise fourth quickest in the brand new
00:12:30Lotus 94T with the Renault power is Elio De Angelis with a one minute, 10.771 second lap.
00:12:39Elio, the brand new Lotus 94T first time out. What's, what is it like to drive a car for the
00:12:45first time in a circuit like this? Well, it's very interesting because especially if the car is
00:12:50competitive, you know, you, you get a fantastic feeling in the fast corner. Well, it seems very
00:12:55competitive. You were fastest today in, uh, unofficial practice. You think you'll be able
00:12:59to hold that position into qualifying for the pole on, uh, Saturday? Well, like, uh, I said before,
00:13:06we have, um, we have a brand new car. So I'm still, uh, trying to understand what the car, what the car
00:13:12likes and what the car wants. So every time that we stop in the pits, I see my board showing me that
00:13:18I'm a little bit quicker than the lap before. So it means that I'm still have to understand the car.
00:13:22Well, and you always want to show some caution with a brand new car too. That's right. He's the
00:13:26only one that we got to the moment. Well, the reason that's the only one they've got at the
00:13:31moment is because Nigel Mansell and Elio De Angelis have these Lotus 94Ts, which have been designed and
00:13:37built in just five weeks between the Canadian and the British Grand Prix by this man, Gerard Decarouge.
00:13:44In fact, Gerard was sacked by the Alfa Romeo team for a bit of a mix up during the French Grand Prix.
00:13:49And I should think they must be very sorry that they let him go to the John Player special Lotus team.
00:13:55Elio De Angelis fourth quickest, although Nigel Mansell had a real hard time during practice,
00:14:00only qualified way down in 18th place with a one minute 15.133 seconds lap. But it would certainly
00:14:08seem that the Lotus Renault combination working well here at Silverstone. The only championship point
00:14:14they scored so far in 1983 was sixth place at the Canadian Grand Prix. Elio De Angelis looking
00:14:21wide, but I should think very delighted with his practice performance. Fifth quickest and leading the
00:14:26Parmalat Brabham challenge is Riccardo Patrese with a one minute 10.881 second lap. The Parmalat Brabham's
00:14:33with their new colour designs looking very good here at Silverstone. Of course, powered by the very quick
00:14:40BMW Turbo. These are brand new Brabham BT52s and in fact during the unofficial practice sessions held two
00:14:50weeks prior to the Silverstone event, both the Brabham's were quickest of all. So it looks as if it's going
00:14:56to be a three corner battle between Brabham, Ferrari and Renault for the British Grand Prix. Six quickest,
00:15:02the Brazilian driver Nelson Piquet second in the World Championship, also with a brand new Parmalat
00:15:07Brabham BT52B. He did a time of one minute 10.933 seconds just behind his teammate Riccardo Patrese.
00:15:19Piquet who of course won the Brazilian Grand Prix and has been very consistent throughout the 1983 season
00:15:25and looks very strongly to be a World Championship contender. Conditions throughout the weekend here
00:15:32at Silverstone up in the 90 degrees Fahrenheit, very humid, very hot indeed. This heat could of course
00:15:40affect the reliability of some of the turbos but Silverstone very much a turbo circuit. There's Gordon
00:15:46Murray, the man who's responsible for the design of these beautiful Parmalat Brabham's.
00:15:56Seventh place on the grid is Eddie Cheever, seen here talking to the Austrian driver Nicky Lauda.
00:16:02Eddie Cheever did a one minute 11.055 second lap. Eddie who hasn't had great reliability during the
00:16:101983 season with his Renault but hopes to do well here at Silverstone.
00:16:16Interesting to note the top 12 positions during qualifying taken by turbo-powered cars. Eddie Cheever
00:16:27himself lies seventh in the World Championship with 14 points.
00:16:34The Renault cars becoming certainly more reliable during the 1983 season and
00:16:39Pacquiao and Proce has finished almost every Grand Prix so far.
00:16:49American Danny Sullivan way down in 23rd place with his normally aspirated Tyrrell Ford
00:16:54and we asked Danny to explain to us the cockpit layout in the Tyrrell.
00:16:58First we have the master switch and we have the on-off switch. We then go to the fuel pump
00:17:04and we have the ignition which is fired from the rear. We have the retard switch that you start the engine
00:17:14with and then the light in case of rain or bad weather so the cars behind us can see. Here we have for our
00:17:22fire safety and for the car safety the fire extinguisher switch in case of emergency. We here have the
00:17:29gear lever with five forward and one reverse gears. Here we have the brake balance bar. This is for
00:17:38adjusting the brake bias either more for the front or more for the rear by just turning it in this direction.
00:17:45Below that we have a switch here that can adjust the front anti-sway bar and again you can go harder
00:17:54or softer to help determine the handling of the car throughout the race. How often do you actually
00:17:59have to adjust the brake and the sway bar during the race? Well hopefully on the brake bias we don't
00:18:07have to adjust it very often except in places like Monte Carlo where the conditions changed at the
00:18:13beginning of the race it was damp so we had more rear brake and then as it dried we adjusted the brakes
00:18:18back to the front. Now the sway bar of course we might adjust each race because when the car is heavy
00:18:24with fuel we might have it a little bit softer and then as the fuel load lightens we go heavier with the
00:18:31brake bias I mean the sway bar balance to change the characteristic of the handling. There's not really
00:18:38much room in there is there is it well padded or do you get sore spots throughout an event?
00:18:43Well again it's it depends on the track but it's very very well padded and in fact you don't want too
00:18:49much room because you want to be tight in here so you're not moving around holding on very much.
00:18:54Now you're held in by six different safety belts there do you have to tighten those during the
00:19:00race do they loosen up? Generally not they they're very well you know adapted and they have velcro strip
00:19:08so it can't slip too much and they you know two across the waist and two up through the legs to
00:19:14keep them from sliding forward and then two over the shoulders and then of course we have this tube
00:19:19here which hooks into the helmet in case of fire it pumps in pure oxygen into our helmet so that we're not
00:19:25breathing any fumes from say the burning fiberglass or something like that. Have you ever had to use
00:19:31that oxygen tube yet? Well we use it every time and the only fire that I had I got out of the car in
00:19:36about three seconds so the tube didn't do me much good then. Well that's the greatest protection isn't
00:19:42it? That's right. Best of luck Danny thank you for showing us your office and the rest of the season
00:19:48we hope that you'll be visiting the ESPN cameras several times. Thank you very much.
00:19:52Making a welcome return to Grand Prix racing after an absence of some 15 years is Honda. They won two
00:20:01Grand Prix's in 1965 and in 1967. In fact in 1967 they finished fourth in the world championship. They
00:20:08used to have racing for them the American drivers Richard Ginther and Ronnie Buckman but here at Silverstone
00:20:13they've got Stefan Johansson and have qualified in 14th place on the grid. Stefan this is the first time
00:20:19that Honda has been back in Formula One since 1968. How do you feel about being an important part of
00:20:25this historical event? Well I'm very excited about it all obviously and I'm also very honored that they
00:20:32chosen me to to represent them. Now you've been working on this project for some time actually
00:20:38developing the engine all the way from Formula Two racing. How long has this whole program been in the works?
00:20:44Well it hasn't been all that long not the F1 project anyway not for us or for me anyway I've been working
00:20:50on it for about eight months now and we've suddenly had our ups and downs. Your car looks distinctively
00:20:58smaller than some of the other Formula One cars out on the track is it actually a smaller unit than the
00:21:04other cars? It is fairly small yeah because it's still based on the Formula Two car we used last year
00:21:09so the wheelbase is very short and it's very neat entirely. Isn't that harder to drive on the high
00:21:16speed turns? Yes. Kind of an exciting time? Yes it's very exciting out there today that's for sure. How do
00:21:23you feel your chances are for this race and the rest of the season? Well I think our main object is to try
00:21:29to finish all the races for a start and maybe hope for some better results next year. And for next year do you
00:21:36still plan to be with Spirit Honda Racing? If they want me I'll certainly be with them I think. Thank
00:21:41you very much and good luck Stefan. Thank you. Qualifying in 21st place is one of the smaller
00:21:48teams in Formula One Grand Prix racing the Theodore Ensign team the brainchild of Maurice Nunn. They
00:21:54have two up and coming drivers driving for the team Roberto Guerrero the Colombian in his second season
00:22:00of Formula One racing and the Venezuelan Johnny Chicotto who failed to qualify here. As everyone
00:22:06who's been to a Grand Prix is aware this type of sport attracts probably the most beautiful women
00:22:11anywhere in the world. One person certainly attracted and in fact permanently attracted to Grand Prix
00:22:18racing is the Californian born Katie. Katie Guerrero who first came to a Grand Prix back in Long Beach in
00:22:241981. We're with Katie Guerrero with the Ensign Theodore team and Katie is the only American wife
00:22:33on the circuit married to Roberto Guerrero. Katie I wanted to ask you um there must be some times when
00:22:39you're very happy to see your husband come back safely from a practice session or a race. No definitely
00:22:44so every time I'm afraid it's a bit nerve-wracking but so I think I think upstairs every time he does come
00:22:52back because it is very very frightening I'm afraid. But Formula One is also very enjoyable Katie I mean
00:22:58the travel and the unusual people you get to meet. Unusual no yes it definitely is we have a really
00:23:06really nice time we go a lot of nice places and there are a lot of nice people involved we enjoy it. How
00:23:12many years would you like to see yourself and Roberto following the Formula One scene? Oh as long as
00:23:18I'm sure I would enjoy it as long as as he does. I love the traveling and like I said and the people
00:23:25so as long as things are going well as long as he can handle it. One time I saw you pointing out a
00:23:31piece of body work that wasn't perfectly fitting the car to the mechanics do you watch that sort of
00:23:35thing in the pits? Like an eagle yeah I do I keep an eye on things. And you don't hesitate to tell
00:23:40people when you see something that doesn't look exactly perfect to you? Oh no I never hesitate to do much at
00:23:46all. Well best of luck and we hope that the rest of the season is as successful and pleasurable for
00:23:52you as the first half. Thanks very much John. At each of the remaining Grand Prix's in the 1983 season
00:24:04we're going to bring you an in-depth interview with one of the central characters involved in current day
00:24:10Formula One Grand Prix racing. The world champion Keke Rosvog is somewhat of a controversial character so we
00:24:16chose to speak to him. We're with Keke Rosvog, the current world champion in Formula One. Keke you have
00:24:23a great deal of experience racing in the United States. How do you compare racing in North America
00:24:28and the racing here in Europe? Well I suppose you have to compare similar levels of motor racing than
00:24:35what I did in the States. I think the big difference is the safety standards of the race tracks are much
00:24:44much higher in Europe. I think basically there is just more money in road racing and in Europe than
00:24:50there is in America surprisingly. So therefore the tracks are I would say more modern over here. Competition
00:24:59is the same over there than it is here. I mean there's not much difference in that although I would
00:25:05say for on Formula race in front it's a bit more professional in the on average on the same level
00:25:12in Europe than it is in the States. But the Atlantic series like what I did in America were obviously very
00:25:17very competitive very professional over there. Keke how do you feel the safety is in Formula One at the
00:25:23moment. Can you see anything that you'd like to improve? The safety in Formula One is very good
00:25:28at the moment. The regulations that got changed. The cars got slowed down from last year. Made a big
00:25:33improvement on them. It still doesn't necessarily mean I'm a big fan of it. Of those changes but yes
00:25:40Formula One is very safe at the moment. Keke you are one of the drivers who is without turbo power at the
00:25:47moment and I've never seen you drive harder. What's it like to have all that hard driving in the
00:25:52corners be eaten up down the straightaways? Well that's the way Formula One is at the moment. It's
00:25:57a technical sport and you're always looking for a technical advantage over the others. Well this
00:26:02time me and my team we've been left behind and the others have the advantage. It's normally motorizing
00:26:08it is frustrating but next year the situation will be different. Next year everybody will have a turbo
00:26:14in Formula One and then they'll be back to old days again. We understand that you've told Frank Williams that
00:26:20you won't be racing with him unless he does have a turbo. What's the current situation on the Williams
00:26:25team getting a turbocharged engine? Well actually I never had to tell that to Frank. It is quite
00:26:31obvious that that is the case but Frank has signed a contract with a with an engine manufacturer for next
00:26:38year. It hasn't been announced yet who it is. It will be in its due time. So Williams definitely will
00:26:45be using turbo engine next year. Now in the past it's been said that some world champions have
00:26:51lost their competitive desire after they've achieved their lifelong goal but that doesn't seem true for
00:26:57you. No my lifelong goal wasn't to win one world championships or 17 world championships. My goal is
00:27:06every season is going to be the same do the very best you can and if it brings you the championship once
00:27:11twice three times 14 times great. If it doesn't you still know you've done the best possible you could.
00:27:17The pit stop situation in Formula One now do you think it's a good thing or do you think it's not so
00:27:22good? Well two two point of views obviously. One is the spectator's point of view which I think for
00:27:28the spectator is very confusing. One is driver's point of view. The driver will say it's a great thing if
00:27:34he gets an advantage out of it. He says it's a bad thing if he loses through that. Quite obvious. I don't
00:27:39think it's good for spectators. I don't care if I do a pit stop or not. If I gain for that I do a pit stop
00:27:44because everybody else does I have to do. For me it doesn't really make any difference. What do you
00:27:51enjoy about a Grand Prix weekend the most? The driving. I still like to develop the end product test
00:27:59set up my car as well as possible and and the pure driving itself gives me immense pleasure maybe more
00:28:05than ever so. Race day at Silverstone dawns dry sunny and hot an estimated total attendance of 120 000
00:28:14spectators to be packed around the 2.932 mile Grand Prix Silverstone circuit.
00:28:22Throughout the morning the traffic champs around the circuit something like 12 miles but the spectators
00:28:27in the circuit lots of things to look at they can even bet on the outcome of the race.
00:28:32A lot of Ferrari fans here not only from Italy but also from England.
00:28:41And just part of this packed crowd all the way around the Silverstone circuit.
00:28:46To the Grand Prix itself. Round nine of the Formula One World Championship for Grand Prix cars. 67 laps
00:28:54which will be a total of 196 miles. There's the World Championship positions after eight rounds.
00:29:00Alain Prost with 30 points. Second equal Patrick Tombé Nelson Piquet with 27. So it's very close in the top
00:29:07eight positions and indeed any one of those drivers could still win the coveted World Championship. There's
00:29:14René Arnau the pole position qualifier going out to his Ferrari. Patrick Tombé there talking to the
00:29:23team's engineers. Alain Prost looking on last-minute preparations to his Renault. There's Elio De Angelis,
00:29:30the Italian with a brand-new Lotus. Ricardo Patrizzi. And Nelson Piquet receiving a bit of shade from this
00:29:39incredibly hot Mediterranean-type sun. Gordon Murray with Nelson Piquet in the Parmalat Brabham.
00:29:47And the drivers now preparing for the start of the 67 laps. The race itself should take something
00:29:58like one and a half hours in duration and Stefan Johansson looks almost as if he's praying but he's just
00:30:04noticed our cameras. Stefan taking part in his first ever Formula One Grand Prix. Very successful driver of
00:30:14course is the Spirit Formula Two team. And the grid now being cleared prior to the start of the 1983
00:30:23British Grand Prix. Round nine of the championship. In total 15 rounds of the championship will be held.
00:30:32There'll be a second Grand Prix to be held in England. The European Grand Prix on the 25th of September
00:30:38at Brandt's hatch. That race in fact replacing the New York Grand Prix which will take place now in 1984.
00:30:45The cars now on their warming up lap. Arno in pole, then Tombe. Third quickest Alain Prost. Fourth quickest
00:30:52Elio De Angelis. Ferrari, Ferrari, Renault. Then Lotus Renault. Fifth quickest Patrizzi. Sixth quickest Nelson Piquet.
00:30:59Seventh quickest Eddie Cheever. Eighth quickest with the ATS Manfred Winklehot powered by the BMW Turbo.
00:31:05Ninth to Cesareth. Tenth Derek Warwick. Eleventh Marabaldi. Twelfth Bruno Giacomelli. Thirteenth Keki
00:31:10Rosberg with the first of the normally aspirated cars. The Williams Ford. Then Stefania Hanson with that
00:31:16turbocharged Honda. Then Niki Lauda. Michele Alboreto. Thierry Boutin. Nigel Mansell with the Lotus Renault in
00:31:2318th place. Marc Suhr in 19th. And finally Jacques Lafitte in 20th place. 26 cars though will start the
00:31:30British Grand Prix. Number 28 in pole position with that sensational lap of over 152 miles an hour.
00:31:37The fastest ever lap of the Formula One Grand Prix circuit of all time. Seconds to go now before the
00:31:43start of the 1983 British Grand Prix. All the cars will be held once they've formed up from the
00:31:50pace lap. The engine revs now rising. Red lights on. Green lights and they're away. And the two Ferraris
00:31:56look to have made a very good start. As for the two Renaults. The Tracey looking to the inside going
00:32:00towards Scott's corner. But it's Tambay leading. Arnoux wants to be in second place. So Tambay from the
00:32:06outside of the front row. Looks to have gone into the lead from his team mate Lenny Arnoux. Through
00:32:11maggots they go. And it's Tambay leading. And Prost almost loses it. But Tambay leads with a Ferrari.
00:32:16Arnoux second. Prost third. Patrasi fourth. Fifth Cheever. Sixth Piquet. Seventh D'Angers. Eighth to
00:32:21Cesaris. Ninth is Winklock. And in tenth place is the Tummelman of Warriken. Rosberg almost goes off at
00:32:27the exit of Beckett. But gets back on. No harm down. Down the long hangar straight they come. It's Tambay still
00:32:32leading. Oh and Arnoux look to the inside. Gross third. And it's still the same order. The rest of
00:32:37the field absolutely bunched up together. The whole field coming through. And Arnoux
00:32:42snaking there. But OK. Through a club they go. It's still Tambay leading with Ferrari. Arnoux in second
00:32:48place. Gross in third place. Those top three seem to have pulled away just a little bit from their
00:32:53pursuers. And they come up towards the completion of Lat 1. And the two Ferraris looks to have drawn
00:33:00away a little bit. Tambay leads. Arnoux in second place. Third place is Prostil. Close. Very close
00:33:07to Arnoux. Fourth is Patrasi. Fifth Cheever. Sixth D'Angers now. Seventh Piquet. Eighth to Cesaris. Ninth is
00:33:13Winklock. And tenth is Tolman of Warriken. Eleventh now is Stefan Johansson with that Honda.
00:33:19Intercops once more. The race leader Patrick Tambay leads. Pulling away a little bit from Arnoux.
00:33:25Under a lot of pressure from Alain Prost. We watch the midfield going through there. The Ligier
00:33:30of Jarrier. And where's De Angelis has gone off. There's a fire. Flash fire behind De Angelis' car.
00:33:37And a real shame. Remember De Angelis qualifying in fourth place for the British Grand Prix. He's out.
00:33:42That engine well and truly blown up there. It could have been the turbos. The twin turbos. But blue.
00:33:48But De Angelis' race is run. So change of order. Still Tambay leads Arnoux in second place.
00:33:53Pro CERN. Patrasi fourth. Cheever fifth. It's PK six.
00:33:57Cesare seventh. Eighth is Winklock. Ninth is Warrik. And in tenth place is Stephanie Johansson.
00:34:02But up into eleventh place now is Nigel Mansell with the second of the Lotuses. And upper place
00:34:07goes the American Danny Sullivan past Roberto Guerrero with Theodore.
00:34:12Still though it is Patrick Tambay leading with that brand new Ferrari.
00:34:18Towards the Woodcut chicane they come. Still the two Ferraris leading. Patrick Tambay in number 27.
00:34:26Arnoux second. Proce third. Patrasi fourth. Cheever fifth. Sixth PK. Seventh is the Cesare's.
00:34:32Eighth Winklock. Ninth is the Tolman of Warrik. Tenth now. Upper place goes Nigel Mansell.
00:34:39And eleventh place is the Spirit Honda. The whole field coming through cleanly.
00:34:46The race leaders through first and second. The two Ferraris now seem to be closing up a little bit.
00:34:51Alain Prost dropping back just that little bit.
00:34:54Through up place goes Elige. Chasing Danny Sullivan. That's Jarrier. But we're back to the race leaders.
00:35:01First and second. Still the same. The two Ferraris. Alain Prost in third place.
00:35:05Still the smoke billowing behind from Elio De Angelis' car. So first, second, third, fourth,
00:35:11fifth and sixth. Fairly close together. But Eddie Cheever seems to be slowing.
00:35:14Cheever is slowing and is to be taken there by Nelson Piquet who goes up into fifth place.
00:35:18Cheever drops to sixth place. The Alfa of the Cesare still in seventh place. And Mansell
00:35:23certainly making ground there in ninth place. As is the Spirit Honda in tenth place. Thirteenth
00:35:29place for the world champion Keke Rosbog. Upper place goes Jean-Pierre Jarrier ahead of Danny
00:35:35Sullivan who's going very well with the normally aspirated Tyrell. Patrick Tambay still leads.
00:35:42And the top three now closing up a little bit. They've pulled away perhaps half a second from
00:35:46fourth place man Riccardo Petrese with the Parmalat Brabham. There's third place man number 15 Alain Prost.
00:35:55Remember he's on Michelin tyres. The two Ferraris on Goodyear tyres.
00:36:02So it's Goodyear, Goodyear leading Michelin at the moment. Through Stoke corner they go. And
00:36:08certainly Alain Prost looks. And there's Eddie Cheever just going into the pits. Cheever we just
00:36:12caught sight of there going into the pits and he's out. First, second, third and fourth
00:36:16are very close together. Petrese with the Parmalat Brabham. Moving up onto the tail of Alain Prost.
00:36:23There's the Spirit Honda in tenth place. Going well in his debut outing here. Just leading one of
00:36:28the McLarens. There is Cheever in the pits and I believe out of the race with some form of mechanical
00:36:34problem. Back to the race leader. Still very close here at Silverstone. Through Cox corner has gone our
00:36:40race leader. And this big battle on for tenth place. Tenth Johansson, eleventh is Nicky Lauda.
00:36:50Tombe moving clear now of a big battle for second place between the Ferrari of René Arnoux.
00:36:57And right behind him now looking for a way past the current world championship
00:37:01leader Alain Prost. Number 15. Just one Renault Turbo remaining in the British Grand Prix. And
00:37:06look at second, third, fourth place. Very close together indeed.
00:37:12Through Stoke corner they go. Petrese moving right on the tail. But also Nigel Mansell challenging for
00:37:18eighth place from the Tolman Hart Turbo of Warwick. First, second, third and fourth. Still very close together.
00:37:26The top four looks to be closing up again. They're dropping our fifth place man, Nelson Piquet,
00:37:32just a little bit. Ferrari, Ferrari, Renault, then BMW Turbo, BMW Turbo, then the Alfa Turbo. But
00:37:40Stephanie Hanson out of tenth place. I think retiring into the pits. The engine of the Honda V6 Turbo,
00:37:47the twin turbo, absolutely silent. His race is run, but nevertheless showing very well in the early
00:37:52stages of the race here at Silverstone, which bodes very well for the Honda team for the rest of the season.
00:38:04Back to the race. Still the same order in the top five. De Cesaris in sixth place with the Alfa Turbo.
00:38:10The two Ferraris lead. There is Pro still in third place. Patrese right behind him in fourth place.
00:38:17But no, Patrese seems to be dropping back just that little bit. But second and third, still very close
00:38:22together indeed. Through Copse Corner they come. And there's one disinterested spectator rushing away
00:38:34from the circuit down at Stowe. Obviously a very hair-raising experience. But back to the race leader.
00:38:40It's Siltambe, Arnaud, Prost, Patrese, then Nelson Piquet. Top five, pulling well clear of six men.
00:38:49Into the woodcut chicane they come. Still the same order. Patrese dropping back just that little bit now.
00:38:57And Nelson Piquet closing on Riccardo Patrese.
00:39:03Patrick Tombe leads in with the Ferrari.
00:39:11And now once again the top four closing up again. It seems to be a real seesaw all the way around the
00:39:16circuit. They're sixth place to Cesare. Seventh place now Manfred Winklock. Eighth place is the
00:39:21Tolman of Warwick. Ninth place the John Player Special.
00:39:29First, second and third. And it looks to us as if Riccardo Patrese is missing.
00:39:35Piquet is now up into fourth place. Patrese is missing.
00:39:38So it's Patrick Tombe, René Arnaud, Alain Prost, Nelson Piquet. We're looking for Riccardo Patrese.
00:39:47And there a telltale smoke. And oh, obviously a blown engine there for the early fourth place man.
00:39:54Riccardo Patrese with the Palm Lamp-Rabham is out of the British Grand Prix. Second and third now,
00:39:59closing up once again Alain Prost. Closing right on the tail of René Arnaud's Ferrari. Fourth place is Nelson Piquet.
00:40:08So Piquet holding up the Palm Lamp-Brabham honours as of course is Alain Prost in the sole surviving
00:40:16Renault. I wonder if this is going to be a race of attrition. It's incredibly hot here at Silverstone
00:40:21in the low 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Almost unheard of temperatures for England. Second and third now,
00:40:28very close together indeed. Still the race leader, still second place the same, Arnaud under a lot of pressure.
00:40:40Alain Prost putting two wheels up on the curb stones at the exit of Cotts corner.
00:40:45Change to our aerial view position. Into Becketts they come. Still the race leader, Patrick Tombe,
00:40:52who seems to be drawing clear just that little bit from this battle for second place. And what a battle
00:40:57it is. Looking one way, then the other way. Down, through onto Hanger Straight they come.
00:41:04Speeds attained here of 175 to 180 miles per hour. Oh, a little bit sideways there going through Stowe
00:41:11Corner for second place man, René Arnaud. Arnaud who of course won the Canadian Grand Prix.
00:41:17Nice fifth in the world championship. Coming up towards the very fast flat out sweep. The left hand
00:41:26at Abbey. Towards that daily express bridge. Under the bridge they go, the fastest point of the circuit.
00:41:32190 miles an hour. Breaking hard for Chicane. Still second and third place under close dispute there.
00:41:37Piquet closing in also, it would seem. But second and third now, closer than they've ever been before.
00:41:43The race leader goes through Tombe. And trying to take second place there. Side by side through
00:41:47Cops Corner. And into second place goes the Frenchman Alain Prost. And now right on the tail of
00:41:54new third place man, René Arnaud, is the Brabham of Nelson Piquet. Piquet looking to the inside,
00:42:00thinking better of it coming into Becketts. Prost pulling clear a little bit in second place and it
00:42:05would seem to perhaps to be closing on the race leaders. We've got a real race on our hands here for the
00:42:101983 British Grand Prix. And what a battle on the third place between the Ferrari of René Arnaud and
00:42:17Nelson Piquet. Remember Piquet tying for second place in the world championship prior to this event.
00:42:23Just three points behind Alain Prost, who there is in second place and really trying very hard indeed.
00:42:28Could the Goodyear tyres be going off a little bit on the Ferraris?
00:42:31In third place. Through club they go. And Piquet out of the slipstream trying to get some clean air on that car.
00:42:45Patrick Tarvey going through. Prost in second place. Arnaud third. Nelson Piquet is in fourth place.
00:42:50In fifth place at the moment. But out of our sight, André de Cesaris with the Alpha Turbo.
00:42:55Intercops and third and fourth place now under close dispute.
00:43:01So it's Goodyear, Michelin, Goodyear, Michelin. Of course the Parmalat Brabham with the BMW
00:43:09Turbo is on the French Michelin tyres. And Nelson Piquet really looking every which way to try and get
00:43:17past that Ferrari. Down hanger straight they go. Into Stowe corner. This corner, long right hand,
00:43:27they're taking it something like 150 miles per hour. And a little bit sideways for the Brabham.
00:43:36Now absolutely close behind going into club.
00:43:43Once again up towards Abbey. Arnaud still in third place. Arnaud of course the man who set that
00:43:50incredible pole position time of over 152 miles per hour for the Silverstone circuit. First to second
00:43:57in fact looks at Prost is closing in on the race leader Patrick Tarvey. Whilst we're watching this
00:44:02battle for third place between René Arnaud and the 1981 world champion Nelson Piquet.
00:44:08Arnaud still third. Piquet with that Parmalat Brabham in fourth place. Many people tipping Nelson Piquet,
00:44:20the Brazilian driver, to be the world champion this year. And I think that the battle will really be on
00:44:25between Alain Prost and Nelson Piquet over the remaining rounds of the Formula One world championship.
00:44:32And Piquet looking to the inside, coming up side by side, four club corner but no, tucks in, thinks better of it.
00:44:44They flapped one of the Grand Prix international sponsored arrows.
00:44:51And Arnaud strangely enough, they're pulling away a little bit. I think Piquet lost ground.
00:44:55But closing up, coming into the chicane, out of the chicane they come.
00:44:58Through the incredible heat haze here at Silverstone. Third and fourth, now once again very close together.
00:45:13Into Becket's, 110 miles an hour. Out of Becket's. And there is first and second. As we said,
00:45:21Alan Prost was closing up on the race leader, number 27. And now we have a battle on our hands for the
00:45:26race lead as well as third and fourth. So the Ferrari of Patrick Tombé still leads,
00:45:33but Alain Prost has closed right up on him. So it's Ferrari versus Renault.
00:45:43Into the Woodcut chicane they come. And a little bit sideways, it would seem that the leader,
00:45:49Patrick Tombé could well be having problems with his Goodyear tyres. Perhaps he chose the incorrect
00:45:56compounds, but it's still a real battle at this front for the ninth round of the World Championship,
00:46:02the British Grand Prix here at Silverstone.
00:46:03First and second, past Danny Sullivan. Danny down in 15th place. Third and fourth,
00:46:19still the same order. Becket breathing all over the Ferrari. Back to the race leader,
00:46:26down the hangar straight. And could Alain Prost make a try here going into the Stowe corner? No,
00:46:34but still a little bit sideways, a little bit wide for the race leader Patrick Tombé. Alain Prost,
00:46:38though, still in second place. And they really are close now. First and second.
00:46:43Coming up to complete a lap 19 here at Silverstone. Remember, it's a 67 lap race. Into the Woodcut chicane
00:46:57they come. Patrick Tombé with his Ferrari. Alain Prost in second place. And once again,
00:47:06a little bit sideways, a bit of opposite lock needed for Patrick Tombé, the race leader. Third is now
00:47:13Piquet. Fourth is Arnoux. And a change of leadership now, because through onto the inside of Copse goes
00:47:19Alain Prost, just like he did to René Arnoux. So we have a new race leader after 19 laps here at
00:47:27Silverstone. Alain Prost, the current World Championship leader, who's got 30 points,
00:47:32three points clear of his nearest rival Patrick Tombé and Nelson Piquet, who are second and third
00:47:37behind him, who both got 27 points. There's Piquet in third place. Now fourth place is René Arnoux.
00:47:47And Alain Prost with the Renault is now pulling away from Patrick Tombé, who led for the first 19 laps
00:47:53of the British Grand Prix here at Silverstone. Through Stowe comes the Belgium driver Thierry Boutin,
00:48:00way down the order. Battling it out for 12th place is Keke Rosbeau, the current World Champion.
00:48:06And going through on the inside there, a bit cheekily, is Jean-Pierre Jarré with the Ligier.
00:48:13Back to the race leaders, and they've closed up again, but they are lapping Michele Albarretta,
00:48:17the man, of course, who won the recent Detroit Grand Prix. Alain Prost still leading Patrick Tombé in
00:48:23second place. Through Kopp's corner they go, first and second now, clear of that battle between Albarretta.
00:48:41That looks to be another of the Ligiers, probably Raoul Bozell, but they're at lap 20.
00:48:46Was Prost leading, Tombé in second place, Piquet third, our new fourth, fifth place to Cesarese,
00:48:51and sixth place for the ATS BMW of Manfred Winklehock. First and second through Stowe corner,
00:49:01coming up to one-third distance. Remember, we've got to have the famous pit stops now.
00:49:07Pit stops will take place round about the lap 30 to 35 mark, I would suggest,
00:49:13and that could change the pattern of the race.
00:49:15Marobaldi, who is down in eighth place, being chased by John Watson, who started in 25th place,
00:49:24but is now up to ninth place. Ahead of this battle, once again, Rosberg going through on the inside
00:49:30of the Ligier of Jarrier. And the first pit visitor is the Candy Tolman of Derek Warrick, out of eighth
00:49:38place. There's the time. Brian Hart in the background, the man responsible for the all-British-built Hart
00:49:45Turbo. 12 seconds now gone. Tyres are still being changed on the rear. A slow pit stop for Derek Warrick,
00:49:54and I think there may well be problems for his car. We leave him and go back to the race leader who's
00:50:01about to lap that. Rather interesting battle between the current world champion, Rosberg, and the Ligier of Jarrier.
00:50:08And second and third now, coming close together, because in second place, of course, is still Patrick Tombe,
00:50:15but closing up on him in third place, the world champion of 1981, Nelson Piquet with a Parmalat Brabham.
00:50:22Remember, these two are tying in second place in the world championship stakes at the moment, both on 27 points.
00:50:28So arch rivals, Patrick Tombe, in that famous number 27, the car that Gilles Villeneuve used to race, of course,
00:50:35before his tragic accident. Indeed, Tombe coming into the team after that accident in Belgium last year,
00:50:42when Villeneuve tragically lost his life. Tombe still in second place, though, but now being hounded by the Parmalat Brabham
00:50:51of Nelson Piquet. But remember, everything could still change on one bad pit stop and all the leading
00:50:59runners are going to have to have a pit stop. Tombe saying thank you to Jarrier for letting him through,
00:51:09but looking down the inside, going through Kopp's corner. Third place man, the Parmalat Brabham of Piquet,
00:51:18up towards Beckets they come.
00:51:20Still behind Rosberg. There's Rosberg. Tombe and Nelson Piquet looking to the outside. Now,
00:51:32right in the slipstream going down the hangar straight. Now, can Piquet perhaps slipstream past
00:51:39Tombe going into Stowe corner. Tombe through. Oh, and just squeezes past Rosberg. As does Nelson Piquet,
00:51:47a very close manoeuvre. Still second and third. Perhaps that's given Patrick Tombe a bit of a
00:51:53breathing space, but now right back on his tail comes Nelson Piquet. And some really quite
00:52:00incredible overtaking manoeuvres here at Silverstone. There, lap 29. Prost, Tombe, Piquet, Arnaud,
00:52:06de Cesaris and Winklehock. Remember, they've all got to make their pit stops for fresh tyres and put on
00:52:14some more fuel because the majority of the cars have only gone out on half tanks and on very sticky
00:52:20dry weather. Slick tyres and right in the slipstream there is Nelson Piquet in third place. Patrick
00:52:25Tombe still in second place, but all the while, Alan Prost is leading. Alan Prost still well in the lead.
00:52:32He's pulled out something like a 10 second lead on these two.
00:52:34And looking down the inside, Nelson Piquet and the door firmly shut by Patrick Tombe. Once again,
00:52:46side by side. Piquet trying always the exact same line. And will he attack now going into Stoke
00:52:53Corner? I think he will. He's right up behind Patrick Tombe coming up side by side. And they're
00:52:58absolutely side by side. They must be wheel banging through Stoke Corner. They are touching wheels.
00:53:02And that is an incredible manoeuvre. And it's still Tombe in second place. Well, you don't get any
00:53:08closer than that. And once again making a challenge into club corner, it's Nelson Piquet. And that was
00:53:13an quite incredible sequence of racing. Still second and third. All eyes on this tremendous battle between
00:53:22arch rivals Patrick Tombe and Nelson Piquet right behind him coming into the Woodcut chicane. And through,
00:53:29under braking goes Nelson Piquet in a real daredevil manoeuvre. So Piquet goes into second place.
00:53:36Tombe in third place. So two Michelin runners, first and second. Tombe with the Goodyear tyres
00:53:42in third place. In third place. Fourth place now will be his teammate René Arnoux. In fifth place will still be
00:53:50De Cesaris. Sixth place though will be Nigel Mansell. Seventh place Winklehock. Piquet with that Parmalat-Brabham.
00:53:58Second place. Second place. Third place for Patrick Tombe.
00:54:08Through Stowe corner. Nelson Piquet second. Patrick Tombe third.
00:54:15Well, it does say on the back of your entry tickets that motor racing is dangerous and it certainly is
00:54:19dangerous for that spectator in Grand Prix racing. In fact, it's almost abnormal not to have a pit stop.
00:54:35Piquet really come in now to the pits. He's staying to the right hand side of the road and let's watch the
00:54:43Parmalat-Brabham mechanics because they really do practice this. They've done a complete pit stop
00:54:48in roundabout 12 seconds. The fastest time here so far has been 14 and a half seconds by the Ferrari
00:54:55team. Through back into the lead goes number 15, the Renault of Alain Prost. Status quo then is resumed.
00:55:02Into the pits comes the Parmalat-Brabham Piquet and just watch these Parmalat-Brabham mechanics. Quite
00:55:08incredible. Tyres coming off. The fuel going on. And they finish changing those tyres in seven seconds.
00:55:16The fuel is off and it's incredibly quick. Just 12 and a half seconds. In fact, not even that. It's 12.26
00:55:23seconds. So after 42 laps. It's Prost Mansell. Remember Nigel Mansell with the John Flair Special.
00:55:29They've still got to make a fuel stop. So it's Prost leading. Mansell in second place.
00:55:34And in comes Nigel Mansell. The brand new John Flair Special. The Lotus Renault. It's the first time,
00:55:44in fact, that Mansell has scored one championship point in the Canadian Grand Prix. It's the first
00:55:49time that Mansell has had the turbo power. Doing very well. Remember, he started 18th on the grid.
00:55:55Tyres being changed. Fuel going on. And really these fuel stops providing quite a spectacle in
00:56:04International Grand Prix motor racing. 13 seconds. A very, very good time for the Lotus team.
00:56:10But here's our race leader. The status quo, as we said, has been turned back to the normal.
00:56:18Prost leads. Alain Prost heading towards victory. This would be his third victory of the 1983 Formula
00:56:25One season. Just over 17 and a half seconds between Alain Prost and Nelson Piquet, who's back in the
00:56:32second place. Mansell went out in fifth place, but he's not far behind fourth place, man. René Arnoux.
00:56:38And there is a big battle to warm the hearts of the many thousands of spectators here.
00:56:45Side by side down the pit straight. They go, oh, and almost hit the cockpit there of the Ligier
00:56:50that's flown off the car. Fourth place still, Arnoux under a lot of pressure now
00:56:54from this young British driver, Nigel Mansell. Really showing his worth here. In front of his
00:57:00home crowd, of course. Arnoux fourth and Mansell. Can he close up down the straight? They're coming
00:57:07up side by side into the corner. But no, it will still be the Ferrari of Arnoux sliding through the
00:57:15corner. Up towards the apex they come. Arnoux, but now look, coming up towards club corner.
00:57:21Challenging for that fourth place. Nigel Mansell, they'll come up towards the flat-out left-hand
00:57:27Abbey Curve. The fastest part of the circuit, and no, he can't pass there. Oh yes, he does. That's
00:57:33incredible. That is the most unusual place to overtake anybody. And I think Nigel Mansell
00:57:40going through into fourth place, having the race of his career, most certainly. And pulling clear of
00:57:47René Arnoux, who's dropped into fifth place, but up into sixth place, has become the first of the
00:57:52normally aspirated cars, the McLaren Ford of Austrian Niki Lauda, as we head towards the final stages of the
00:58:011983 British Grand Prix. There, some 19 seconds behind second placement. There's Danny Sullivan,
00:58:10still running two laps behind, but running in 14th place. A battle on for eighth and ninth place
00:58:16between De Cesaris and John Watson with the second McLaren Ford.
00:58:22Seventh place is Mauro Baldi with the other Alpha. Mark Ciro going through with the Arrows. The ATS of
00:58:30Winklehock, who seems to be slowing quite a lot towards the end of the race. Perhaps he's got a problem with the
00:58:35engine. Sullivan in 14th place, just behind his teammate, Michele Alboreto, who's 13th. There,
00:58:42a cheer from this vast crowd for new fourth-placed man, the John Player Special. And there is John Watson,
00:58:48who's got up into eighth place, who's got up into eighth place. Ninth is De Cesaris. And there is the
00:58:53race leader, Alain Prost leads. Second place, the Palm Lat-Prabham of Nelson Piquet. Third place,
00:59:01Patrick Tombé, their sixth-placed man, Nicky Lauder. Fourth place, the John Player Special. Lotus,
00:59:1094T, its debut race here, going very, very well indeed in fourth place. René Arnoux,
00:59:15with the second Ferrari in fifth place, whilst in sixth place, never giving up, Nicky Lauder,
00:59:21the great Austrian driver.
00:59:30...and for Alain Prost. Less than 10 miles to the chequered flag. Second man, Nelson Piquet,
00:59:36with the Palm Lat-Prabham. Third place for Patrick Tombé. Through Cops Corner for the race leader.
00:59:41Although he's something just under 20 seconds clear of second-placed man, he's still got to be very
00:59:47careful indeed. Remember, there's lots of cars still on the circuit. In fact, there's some 17 cars out of
00:59:54the 26 runners that originally started, who are still running. Sixth-placed man goes through.
00:59:59And there is a midfield battle between Alboreto and one of the Williams. Down this long hangar
01:00:13straight, past those many planes that have been parked here for the Silverstone British Grand Prix,
01:00:19past the packed grandstands. We look down on this motorsporting event from 400 feet up in the air.
01:00:31Through Club Corner for three of the normally aspirated cars. That in fact is Jacques Lafitte,
01:00:37just behind Michele Alboreto, about to lap the arrows of Mark Surer. Roberto Guerrero with the Theodore
01:00:45is running in 16th place. Through comes Nicky Lauda, about to be lapped by second-placed man.
01:00:53Past part of the bodywork, still lying in the middle of the road. Part of the Ligier bodywork,
01:00:58which could have caused quite a few problems. So not only the race leaders, but all the
01:01:02other cars still circulating at high speed on this circuit. Remember the average lap here,
01:01:09well over 140 miles per hour, which is very quick for a road circuit. Indeed Silverstone proving to
01:01:14be the quickest of all the Grand Prix circuits in the calendar. And so Alain Prost, our race leader,
01:01:21on to his final lap. About 2.7 miles for him to go. He's got to be very careful. I think he's slowing
01:01:31down just that little bit. There's 21 seconds between first and second place. Down the long
01:01:36hangar straight, sitting behind Thierry Boutin with his arrows. Through Stowe Corner for the last
01:01:43time. He's just got half a lap to go before he gains another nine points in the World Championship,
01:01:49and heading towards his third victory of the season. He won, of course, at the French Grand Prix,
01:01:55and then in the Belgium Grand Prix. A total of 30 points prior to this race. The victory here will
01:02:01give him another nine points. He's got a 20-second gap between him and Nelson Piquet with the second
01:02:07car. The Palm Lap Bradme could just about disengage the gear and drift across the line. But no,
01:02:13he's coming up towards the woodcut chicane for the last time. And Alain Prost, with the Renault Turbo,
01:02:19wins the 1983 British Grand Prix jubilation in the pits for the Renault team. In second place
01:02:27will be Nelson Piquet with the Palm Lap Bradme, adding six points. Through goes Nelson Piquet, who
01:02:34led whilst Alain Prost was having his pit stop third place for Patrick Tombe. In fourth place will, of
01:02:41course, be Nigel Mansell, the British driver. His best result to date here in the 1983 season,
01:02:48in fifth place, René Arnoux. And finally, in sixth place, Nicky Lauda. Seventh place will be Mauro
01:02:54Baldi with the Alfa Romeo. Eighth place, Andrea de Cesaris with the second Alfa. Ninth place for John
01:03:00Watson. Tenth place for Jean-Pierre Jarrier. Eleventh place for the current world champion,
01:03:06Keke Rosberg. Then, twelfth place, his teammate, Jacques Lafitte. Amazingly, only nine retirements from the
01:03:1226 starters. And there's the world championship positions after nine rounds. Alain Prost of France,
01:03:18Leeds with 39 points with his Renault. In second place is Nelson Piquet with the Brabham, 33 points.
01:03:25Third place, Patrick Tombe with Ferrari, 31 points. Fourth place, Keke Rosberg with a Williams,
01:03:3125 points. And the head of the non-turbocharged brigade. Fifth place, René Arnoux with 19 points of his
01:03:37Ferrari. And so the end of the British Grand Prix held under ideal hot sunny conditions. And it really
01:03:45was a battle between the turbos. The battle between the Ferrari, the Renault and the Brabham. Ferrari with
01:03:52their very reliable turbo. Renault seemed to have a very reliable turbo and BMW seemed to have a very
01:03:57reliable turbo. And I think we can count on the final six races as being very close and hard fought.
01:04:03The next round of course is the German Grand Prix on the 8th of August at Hockenheim,
01:04:08which most certainly is another of those turbo circuits. The almost obligatory champagne being
01:04:15sprayed. And Alain Prost obviously delighted to be leading the world championship and looking forward
01:04:23to the remaining six races. But we hope that you'll join us in just three weeks time at Hockenheim for the
01:04:30German Grand Prix. Before we finally take our leave of view from Silverstone, let us go and talk to the
01:04:44winner of the 1983 British Grand Prix, Alain Prost, who's talking to John Faginiano. We're with Alain Prost,
01:04:52who has just been victorious at this British Grand Prix. Alain, in this heat, many of the other teams had
01:04:59tire problems. How did your Michelin tires run? I had no problem at all about the tires. I think if I
01:05:05won today, that is only because I had some perfect tires, because I know the Michelin is very good when it's
01:05:11very heat like today. And compared to the other cars, my car was fantastic. Alan, did you have any incidences
01:05:19on the circuit when passing slower cars? I have three problems during the race. My first problem was
01:05:26to pass the two Ferraris, which was very quick during the stretch. And the second problem was when I
01:05:33passed a man friend Winkerlock, because he did not see me just when I was passing him on the curb.
01:05:40When I passed another car, I did not see a piece of the Ligier who was just on the track. And I missed
01:05:54to touch this piece and to have a puncture of my tire, but I was lucky. Two years ago at the same
01:06:00circuit, Alain, you were leading very comfortably. Were you worried towards the end that some problem
01:06:07might steal you from victory again? Yes, it's very important for me this win for this season. And I
01:06:14remember two years ago because I think I missed the championship for this race, and I'm very happy to
01:06:20to win again. You're leading the championship now with 39 points. Do you feel that the team can carry
01:06:27this victorious atmosphere all through the season? Yes, I think psychologically it's a very important win
01:06:35because all the races we have to do after this one are very important, but are very good for us.
01:06:42Both the tires, both our cars. I think we can win everywhere. So I think this win psychologically is very
01:06:48important for all the team who did a very good job, and I think they will follow their mind.
01:06:54Your turbocharged Renault is also an advantage at the next several circuits. So you must be looking forward
01:07:00to Hockenheim and Austria. Yes, but I think all the good cars now, all the competitive cars for the
01:07:06championship have a turbo engine. So I think we have no advantage compared to the Ferrari and the Brabant.
01:07:11I think our advantage is to have a good performance and to have a good rehabilitation at the same time,
01:07:17and to have the perfect title. What about your American teammate, Eddie Cheever? You must have been sad to
01:07:22see him go out early. Yes, but I would like Eddie to finish some more races. He's very, very good, and he's not
01:07:29lucky at the moment, and if he was lucky today, I think he was able to finish second behind me,
01:07:34or even first. But it's a less point for all the concurrence, and I would like he would be more lucky.
01:07:43Best of luck for the rest of the season, and thank you very much. Thank you very much. Bye.
