Deaf President Now! (2025) Documentary Film
Deaf President Now! is a documentary film that recounts the historic eight-day protest held at Gallaudet University in 1988. The students demanded a Deaf president, marking a pivotal moment in civil rights history and paving the way for the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). The film features exclusive interviews with key figures, archival footage and scripted elements, using American Sign Language and voiceovers to bring the story to life.
The plot revolves around the Gallaudet University students' fight for representation and equality. When the board of trustees appointed a hearing president over qualified Deaf candidates, the students rallied together, refusing to back down. Led by Jerry, Greg, Bridgetta and Tim, the students made four demands: a Deaf president, resignation of the board chair, half of the board seats to be held by Deaf members and no reprisals for the students. Their determination ultimately led to the appointment of Dr. I. King Jordan as the university's first Deaf president ² ³.
