Mango season may be over but the work developing new varieties never stops. Scientists are breed for three height, yield, blush and of course taste. That’s where specifically trained panels come in, Landline’s Halina Baczkowski found out how they work.

00:00Mango season might be over, but they're plentiful in this suburban Brisbane building.
00:13These 20 varieties originated from across the world and were all grown at a research
00:18farm in far north Queensland.

00:23Dr Azjad Ali leads the Queensland mango breeding program.
00:27Around 350 plus varieties we have collected around the globe, so they are live in the
00:33field.
00:34Every year they fruit.
00:36Some of them, sometimes they take rest, but mostly they fruit every year and we assess them
00:41in the lab.
00:42The program began in the 1960s with scientists collecting wild mango varieties from Indonesia,
00:48Malaysia and India.
00:50We have 26 plus varieties from India, that's the origin of the crop.
00:56And a couple from Sri Lanka, then USA and Mexico, Brazil, a couple of them from African varieties.
01:03And then other Asian like Thailand, Vietnam, those are Chinese varieties there.
01:10It's all about perfecting the ideal variety for the Australian palate and market.
01:17And it takes more than good growing conditions to create the perfect mango.
01:22There are a couple of options here.
01:24So we included the varieties from Florida.
01:26They have very different taste and aroma.
01:29Philippa Lyons heads the consumer intelligence team for the Queensland Department of Primary Industries.
