A 72-year-old Canberra man has pleaded guilty to the stabbing murder of his partner in their home in October 2023. Van Thanh Vu was about to go to trial on a not guilty plea by reason of mental impairment.

00:00Vantan Vu was helped by an interpreter today.
00:07When the charge of murder was read to him, he said,
00:10I plead guilty.
00:12Vu has been in custody since the incident,
00:15after family members called police to the couple's home.
00:19Police and paramedics faced a confronting scene at the house,
00:23with 65-year-old Ti Tui Huang Nguyen
00:26stabbed multiple times on the kitchen floor.
00:29She could not be revived.
00:31Vu was also injured and unresponsive,
00:34but survived after he was revived in hospital.
00:37He was later charged in a court appearance by video link
00:41from his hospital bed.
00:43No motive has ever been revealed.
00:45Indications Vu would plead guilty surfaced yesterday
00:49when his lawyers told a preliminary hearing that was his intention.
00:53The court heard prosecutors are still finalising agreement
