00:00When my spirit of early autumn wins its flight to rounds of day,

00:09is my song through endless ages, Jesus let me all go away.

00:19I was thinking of that hymn and I thought of Ruth.

00:24Ruth, God holds the key of all unknown.

00:30She certainly took a step into the unknown, didn't she,

00:34when she returned from Moab and went back with Naomi.

00:41Well, I was away last week.

00:45However, thanks to Andy and thanks to YouTube,

00:49I was able to catch up and to hear David Duffet's excellent preaching on Ruth chapter 1.

00:58It really was a blessing. Thank you.

01:01We were reminded that not only about the significance of Moab,

01:08Moab who was head of the Moabite clan,

01:11who was born out of that incestuous relationship between Lot and his eldest daughter,

01:19but more particularly in chapter 1,

01:24we were reminded, of course, about Elimelech and Naomi

01:31and their move from Bethlehem to Moab

01:35and the subsequent marriage of their sons, Marlon and Killian, to Moabite women.

01:41We were challenged to reflect on whether Elimelech and Naomi were right to leave Bethlehem

01:52and go and live among such heathen people.

01:56And I thought about this, and I can see two points of view on this.

02:02How foolish to leave the place of God's choice Israel

02:07to go and live amongst the heathen people.

02:12And yet, by going into Moab

02:16and Marlon marrying Ruth,

02:22who returned to Israel,

02:24we see tremendous blessings.

02:26So the question is open.

02:29The Lord knows.

02:32Now, if there was any uncertainty

02:34about Elimelech's decision

02:37in chapter 1 to move to Moab,

02:42then in chapter 2,

02:43we shall see there is no uncertainty

02:46about Ruth's decision

02:49to return with Naomi, her mother-in-law,

02:53to Bethlehem.

02:54We see real evidence

02:57of the Lord's guiding hand.

03:01Now, in doing a series,

03:03as we do from time to time,

03:06it's a great temptation

03:08for the preacher

03:09to preach on last week's message

03:11or to take some of next week's.

03:15So we're going to do none of that.

03:17That was why I gave you the background

03:19to where we are

03:20in Ruth.

03:22So let's turn now, if we can,

03:26to Ruth, chapter 2.

03:28I had a relative

03:29on her husband's side

03:31from the clan of Elimelech,

03:35a man of standing

03:36whose name was Boaz.

03:39And Ruth, the Moabitess,

03:41said to Naomi,

03:42Naomi, let me go to the fields

03:45and pick up the leftover grain

03:47behind anyone

03:48in whose eyes I find favour.

03:54Naomi said to her,

03:55Go ahead, my daughter.

03:57So she went out

03:58and began to glean

03:59in the fields

04:00behind the harvesters.

04:03As it turned out,

04:04she found herself

04:05working in a field

04:06belonging to Boaz,

04:09who was from the clan

04:10of Elimelech.

04:12Just then,

04:13Boaz arrived

04:14from Bethlehem

04:15and he greeted

04:17the harvesters,

04:18and the Lord

04:19be with you.

04:20The Lord bless you,

04:22they called back.

04:24Boaz asked the foreman

04:26of his harvesters,

04:28whose young woman

04:29is this?

04:31The foreman replied,

04:33she is the Moabitess,

04:35who came back

04:36from Moab with Naomi.

04:40She said,

04:41Please let me glean

04:43and gather amongst the sheaves

04:44behind the harvesters.

04:47She went into the field

04:49and has worked steadily

04:51from morning till now,

04:53except for a short rest

04:54in the shelter.

04:57So Boaz said to Ruth,

04:59My daughter,

05:00listen to me.

05:01Don't go and glean

05:04in another field

05:05and don't go away

05:06from here.

05:08Stay here

05:08with my servant girls.

05:11Watch the field

05:12where the men

05:13are harvesting

05:13and follow along

05:15after the girls.

05:17I have told the men

05:18not to touch you,

05:20and whenever you are thirsty,

05:22go and get a drink

05:23from the water jars

05:24the men have filled.

05:27At this,

05:28she bowed down

05:29with her face

05:30to the ground.

05:32She exclaimed,

05:33Why have I found

05:34such favour

05:35in your eyes

05:36that you notice

05:38me,

05:39a foreigner?

05:42Boaz replied,

05:43I have been told

05:45all about

05:46what you have done

05:47for your mother-in-law

05:48since the death

05:50of your husband,

05:51how you left

05:52your father

05:53and your mother

05:54and your homeland

05:55and came to live

05:57with a people

05:58you did not know

05:59before.

06:00May the Lord

06:02repay you

06:03for what you have done.

06:06May you be

06:06richly rewarded

06:08by the Lord,

06:09the God of Israel,

06:11under whose wings

06:13you have come

06:14to take refuge.

06:17May I continue

06:19to find favour

06:20in your eyes,

06:21my Lord,

06:22she said.

06:23You have given

06:24me comfort

06:25and have spoken

06:27kindly to your servant,

06:29though I do not

06:30have the standing

06:31of one of your servant

06:33girls.

06:35At mealtime,

06:37Boaz said to her,

06:38Come over here,

06:40have some bread

06:41and dip your,

06:42dip it in the wine vinegar.

06:44And when she sat down

06:46with the harvesters,

06:48he offered her

06:49some roasted grain.

06:51She ate all she wanted

06:52and had some left over.

06:55And as she got up

06:56to glean,

06:57Boaz gave orders

06:58to his men,

07:00Even if she gathers

07:01amongst the sheaves,

07:03don't embarrass her.

07:05Rather pull out

07:06some stalk for her

07:07from the bundles

07:08and leave them

07:09for her to pick up

07:10and don't rebuke her.

07:14So Ruth leaned

07:15in the field

07:16until the evening

07:17and then she threshed

07:20the barley

07:20she had gathered

07:21and it was amounted

07:23to about an ephah.

07:25She carried it

07:26back to town

07:27and her mother-in-law

07:28saw how much

07:29she had gathered.

07:32Ruth also brought out

07:34and gave her

07:34what had been left over

07:36after she had eaten

07:38enough.

07:39Her mother-in-law

07:41asked her,

07:42Where did you glean

07:44today?

07:45Where did you work?

07:47Blessed be the man

07:48who took notice of you.

07:51Then Ruth told

07:52her mother-in-law

07:53about the one

07:55at whose place

07:57she had been working.

07:58The name of the man

08:00I worked with today

08:01is Boaz,

08:02she said.

08:04The Lord bless him,

08:06Naomi said

08:07to her daughter-in-law,

08:08He has not stopped

08:10showing his kindness

08:12to the living

08:13and the dead.

08:15She added,

08:16That man is our

08:17close relative.

08:19He is one of our

08:20kinsmen,

08:21redeem us.

08:23Then Ruth,

08:24the Moabitess,

08:25said,

08:26He even said to me,

08:28Stay with my workers

08:30until they finish

08:31harvesting

08:32all my grain.

08:35And Naomi said

08:36to Ruth,

08:37her daughter-in-law,

08:38It will be good

08:39for you,

08:40my daughter,

08:40to go with his girls,

08:42because in someone

08:43else's field

08:44you might be harmed.

08:48So Ruth stayed

08:49close to the servant

08:51girls of Boaz

08:52to glean

08:53until the barley

08:55and the wheat harvest

08:57were finished,

08:57and she lived

08:59with her

09:01mother-in-law.

09:03Some of you

09:04will know

09:05the name

09:06Benjamin Franklin.

09:09He was born

09:10in 1706

09:13in Boston

09:14in Massachusetts.

09:17He's what's

09:18known as

09:19a polymath.

09:21Don't worry,

09:22if you don't know

09:22what a polymath is,

09:24neither did I.

09:25I had to look it up.

09:28But a polymath

09:29is someone

09:30whose knowledge

09:32spans a wide

09:34range of subjects

09:35and ideas.

09:38Benjamin Franklin

09:39was a very,

09:40very gifted

09:41man.

09:44He was a writer.

09:45He was a scientist.

09:48He was a statesman.

09:49He was a diplomat.

09:51He was a printer.

09:52He was a publisher.

09:53He was a political

09:55philosopher.

09:55He was an ambassador

09:57for the USA

09:58in France.

10:00And he was

10:01amongst the most

10:03learned

10:04of influential

10:05intellectuals

10:09of his day.

10:11He was one

10:11of the founding

10:12fathers

10:13of the US,

10:15a drafter

10:16of the signer

10:17of the

10:18Declaration

10:19of Independence.

10:20When he was

10:23the ambassador

10:24to France,

10:27he was ridiculed

10:28for his defence

10:29of the Bible.

10:31As a consequence,

10:33he was determined

10:34to find out

10:35how much

10:36his scoffers

10:37knew about

10:38the Bible

10:38and how much

10:40they'd read it.

10:41And he mentioned

10:42to them

10:43at one of the

10:43learned societies

10:44in Paris

10:45in which he was

10:46asked to speak

10:48that he would

10:49like to tell

10:50them a very

10:51beautiful

10:52story.

10:55And he would

10:55like to

10:56know the

10:57opinion

10:58of his

10:59listeners.

11:03Franklin,

11:04the Bible

11:05lover,

11:06read to them

11:06the whole

11:07of the book

11:08of Ruth.

11:08And when

11:11he'd finished,

11:11the listeners

11:12were in

11:13ecstasy

11:14and they

11:15asked him,

11:17as he was

11:17also a

11:18publisher,

11:19please,

11:20will you

11:20print the

11:21story that

11:22you've just

11:22told us?

11:25Franklin

11:26replied,

11:27it's already

11:28in print.

11:30It's in

11:31your Bible

11:32that you

11:33ridicule.

11:35You know,

11:36I've been

11:37greatly blessed

11:38as I've

11:39studied these

11:40chapters.

11:41We know

11:41Ruth.

11:42We know

11:43the book

11:43of Ruth.

11:44We know

11:45the story.

11:48I often

11:49think that,

11:50you know,

11:50if Hollywood

11:51got hold

11:52of it,

11:53they'd

11:54make a

11:54blockbuster

11:55if they

11:55understood

11:56this wonderful

11:57love story.

12:00But,

12:01you know,

12:01if we

12:01confine it

12:02to a

12:03story

12:03and we

12:05don't see

12:06in it

12:06the great

12:07truths

12:08and spiritual

12:09truths,

12:10then we've

12:12missed it.

12:13There are

12:14only two

12:15books

12:16in Scripture

12:18named after

12:19women

12:19for whom

12:22the Jews

12:23have a special

12:23regard,

12:24the book

12:24of Esther

12:25and the book

12:27of Ruth.

12:27And at

12:29the feast

12:29of Purim

12:30they read

12:31Esther

12:32and at

12:33the feast

12:34of Pentecost

12:35they read

12:36Ruth.

12:38Now,

12:39in chapter

12:39one,

12:40as I said,

12:40and we're not

12:41going to go

12:41into all the

12:42detail again,

12:44we're introduced

12:44to the family

12:45of Elimelech

12:46and Naomi,

12:47a God-fearing

12:49Jewish

12:51or Israelite

12:52couple,

12:53who,

12:53due to the

12:54famine at that

12:55time,

12:55moved with

12:57their sons

12:58from Bethlehem

12:59to the

13:00surrounding

13:01country of

13:02Moab.

13:04Their sons,

13:05Marlon and

13:05Kilion,

13:06married Moabite

13:07wives,

13:09Oprah and

13:10Ruth.

13:11But both

13:12Elimelech,

13:14Marlon

13:14and Kilion

13:16passed away,

13:18leaving Naomi

13:19and Ruth

13:21as widows.

13:22Naomi

13:23and her

13:24daughter-in-law

13:25Ruth

13:25returned

13:27to

13:29Bethlehem.

13:31I want

13:32us to

13:32leave you

13:34some hooks

13:35on which

13:36to remember

13:37what we're

13:38talking about

13:39tonight.

13:40It's not

13:40for me to

13:41criticise

13:42preachers,

13:42but I do

13:43like points

13:44and hooks,

13:45not just

13:45a ramble

13:46along as

13:47you go.

13:48So let

13:49me give

13:49you them.

13:51First

13:51of all,

13:53Boaz

13:54was God's

13:56man for

13:57the moment.

13:59God's

14:00man for

14:00the moment.

14:02But it

14:03was also

14:04God's

14:05moment for

14:06the man,

14:07as we

14:08shall see.

14:08then we

14:12read of

14:14Boaz's

14:14kindness

14:15to Ruth.

14:18But we

14:19also read

14:20of Ruth's

14:21great kindness

14:21to Boaz.

14:25And finally,

14:26we read

14:28of the

14:29Lord's

14:30rich

14:31reward

14:31to Ruth.

14:33the need

14:37was dire.

14:39Ruth and

14:40Naomi were

14:41desperate

14:41for food

14:43and income.

14:46There was

14:46no state

14:47pension,

14:48no social

14:48security,

14:50nobody to

14:51bail them

14:51out.

14:53And so

14:53Naomi

14:54agreed that

14:56Ruth,

14:57once they

14:57had returned

14:58to

14:59Bethlehem,

15:01should seek

15:02help.

15:03And she

15:03suggested that

15:04Ruth goes

15:05and gleans

15:07in the

15:08barley fields.

15:11Now,

15:12gleaning in

15:13the fields

15:13was allowed

15:15under

15:18Old

15:19Testament

15:19law.

15:21Chapter

15:2219 of

15:23Leviticus

15:24gives us

15:25an outline

15:27of that.

15:28And the

15:29farmers were

15:30encouraged to

15:31leave in

15:32their fields

15:33bits of

15:34straw or

15:35barley as

15:36they went

15:37along harvesting.

15:39But,

15:40you know,

15:40all farmers

15:41weren't very

15:42kind.

15:44All farmers

15:44didn't do

15:45what they

15:46should have

15:46done,

15:46despite what

15:47the Word

15:48of God

15:49says in

15:49Leviticus.

15:51And some

15:52days,

15:53under a

15:53hot sun,

15:55it resulted

15:56in very

15:56little success

15:58for those

15:59who were

16:00gleaning.

16:02Gleaning

16:03was a

16:05provision,

16:05as I said,

16:06under Mosaic

16:07law for

16:08the poor,

16:10the widows,

16:11and the

16:12foreigners.

16:13It allowed

16:14them to

16:14gather the

16:16leftover

16:16crops which

16:18the harvesters

16:19had not

16:21collected.

16:21Ruth's request

16:23shows her

16:25willingness to

16:27work hard

16:28and shows

16:29us something

16:30of her

16:31humility

16:31in accepting

16:33such a

16:34mean status.

16:36She was,

16:37after all,

16:38a Moabitess.

16:40The Moabites,

16:41as I said,

16:42were descendants

16:42of Lot,

16:44and they were

16:44often in

16:45conflict with

16:46Israel.

16:47Genesis

16:47chapter 37.

16:50Why would

16:50anyone want

16:51to show

16:52favour to

16:52Ruth?

16:56Isn't that

16:56the truth

16:57of the

16:57gospel?

16:59That God

16:59shows mercy

17:01to those

17:03who are

17:03undeserving

17:04and even

17:06to those

17:07who at

17:07times

17:08oppose him

17:10until the

17:11Spirit

17:11works in

17:13their heart.

17:15Ruth was

17:15aware and

17:16hoped that

17:17she would

17:17find a

17:18field to

17:19glean where

17:21she would

17:21find favour.

17:24The Lord

17:24went ahead

17:25of her and

17:25again we

17:27have a

17:27wonderful truth.

17:28Just look

17:29at verse

17:293.

17:31There are

17:32three things

17:32in these

17:34thoughts about

17:35God's man

17:38for the

17:39moment and

17:39God's moment

17:40for the

17:40man.

17:41But let me

17:41remind you

17:42of verse

17:423.

17:44it says

17:49Naomi said

17:52to her

17:52go ahead

17:53my daughter.

17:55So she

17:55went out

17:56and began

17:56to glean

17:57in the

17:58fields

17:59behind the

18:01harvesters

18:02as it

18:03turned out

18:04she found

18:06herself

18:07walking in

18:08the fields

18:09belonging

18:10to

18:11Boaz.

18:14It reminds

18:15me of one

18:16of my

18:16wife's

18:17favourite

18:17scriptures in

18:18Proverbs

18:19chapter 3

18:20verse 6.

18:22In all

18:22your ways

18:23acknowledge

18:24him.

18:25He will

18:26direct your

18:27paths.

18:28It was

18:29no accident.

18:30It wasn't

18:31good luck

18:32as they

18:32say.

18:33it was

18:36wonderful.

18:37It turned

18:38out because

18:40the Lord

18:40was in

18:41it.

18:43Not by

18:44chance.

18:46And when

18:46all seems

18:47lost God

18:49very often

18:50steps in.

18:52You know

18:52there are

18:53four, I'm

18:54digressing

18:54now, but

18:56there are

18:56four wonderful

18:58illustrations in

18:59scripture.

19:01When man

19:02is in

19:03extremity

19:05and the

19:06word of

19:07God

19:07says

19:09but

19:10God.

19:13In

19:14Genesis

19:14chapter 6

19:16God

19:16said he

19:17was grieved

19:18that he

19:18had made

19:19the world

19:20and he

19:21would

19:21send a

19:22flood.

19:23In

19:23Genesis

19:237

19:25the

19:25waters

19:26flooded

19:26the

19:27earth

19:27for

19:27150

19:28days.

19:30But

19:31God

19:31remembered

19:33Noah

19:34but

19:35God

19:36God

19:39provided

19:39salvation.

19:41It was

19:41Noah's

19:41faith we're

19:42told in

19:43Hebrews

19:43chapter 11

19:44but

19:45God.

19:47What

19:48about

19:48Joseph?

19:51Not

19:52flooding but

19:52famine.

19:54Joseph

19:54stands,

19:55you know

19:55the story

19:56of Joseph

19:57better than

19:57I do.

19:58He stands

19:58before his

19:59brothers

19:59reminding

20:00him of

20:01the way

20:01they treated

20:02him and

20:02the way

20:03they put

20:03him down

20:04in the

20:04pit.

20:05They sold

20:06him and

20:07he ends

20:07up in

20:08Jesus,

20:09in

20:09Egypt.

20:14And he

20:15says to

20:15his brothers

20:16am I in

20:18the place

20:19of God?

20:20You

20:21intended

20:22to harm

20:22me.

20:24But

20:25God

20:25intended

20:29it for

20:29good.

20:30Oh,

20:30these are

20:30very precious

20:31truths.

20:33David was

20:34under siege

20:34by Paul.

20:36Day

20:36after day

20:37Saul

20:37sought for

20:38David's

20:39life.

20:40But God

20:41did not

20:42give him

20:42into his

20:43hands.

20:44God

20:45provided

20:45protection.

20:46in 1

20:47Samuel 23

20:48it says

20:49but

20:50God.

20:54When

20:55Paul was

20:56writing to

20:56the church

20:57at Rome

20:57he said

20:59this.

21:00You see

21:01at just

21:02the right

21:02time

21:03when we

21:04were

21:05powerless

21:05Christ

21:06died

21:07for the

21:08ungodly.

21:10Very

21:10rarely

21:11will anyone

21:11die for

21:12a righteous

21:13person

21:14though for

21:14a good

21:15person

21:15some

21:16might

21:17possibly

21:17dare

21:18to die

21:18but

21:19God

21:20demonstrates

21:21his own

21:22love for

21:23us

21:23and that

21:24while we

21:25were sinners

21:25Christ

21:27died

21:28for us.

21:30So

21:31with

21:32Ruth

21:32it

21:36turned

21:36out

21:37it

21:38says

21:39but

21:39it

21:40also

21:40says

21:41that

21:43she

21:43found

21:44herself

21:45working

21:46in the

21:47field

21:47to a

21:49farmer

21:49called

21:49Boaz.

21:51Another

21:51bit of

21:52luck

21:52do you

21:52think?

21:54No

21:54such

21:55thing.

21:56She

21:56found

21:56herself

21:57in a

21:57field

21:58that

21:58belonged

21:59to

21:59Boaz

21:59because

22:01the

22:01Lord

22:06interesting

22:07follow

22:07this

22:07story

22:08Ruth

22:08that

22:09at

22:10point

22:11Ruth

22:12did

22:13not

22:13know

22:13who

22:14Boaz

22:14was

22:15and

22:16Boaz

22:16he

22:17had

22:17a

22:18knowledge

22:18of

22:19Ruth

22:19but

22:20he

22:20didn't

22:21know

22:21her

22:21he'd

22:22heard

22:22as we

22:23shall

22:23see

22:24in a

22:24minute

22:24he'd

22:25heard

22:25something

22:27about

22:27her

22:27but

22:28he

22:28didn't

22:28know

22:28her

22:29and

22:29she

22:29certainly

22:30didn't

22:31know

22:32Boaz

22:33but

22:34it

22:34says

22:34in

22:34verse

22:35one

22:35now

22:36Naomi

22:37was

22:38a

22:38relative

22:39on

22:40her

22:40husband's

22:41side

22:41and

22:44she

22:47did

22:47appreciate

22:48that

22:55certainly

22:56didn't

22:57significance

22:58of

22:59that

22:59was

23:05situation

23:06in
