00:09Who gave their lives proclaiming that Jesus died and rose

00:19Ours is the same commission, the same black message ours

00:29For by the same and nation, to thee we yield the cross

00:39Good evening to you all, it's good to be with you yet again

00:43And we're going to start by reading Psalm 22

00:46My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?

00:51Why are you so far from saving me?

00:54So far from my cries of anguish?

00:56My God, I cry out by day, but you do not answer

01:01By night, but I find no rest

01:05Yet you are enthroned as the Holy One

01:09You are the one Israel praises

01:12In you our ancestors put their trust

01:15They trusted and you delivered them

01:18To you they cried out and were saved

01:22In you they trusted and were not put to shame

01:25But I am a worm and not a man

01:29Scorned by everyone, despised by the people

01:33All who see me mock me

01:36They hurl insults, shaking their heads

01:39He trusts in the Lord, they say

01:42Let the Lord rescue him

01:44Let him deliver him, since he delights in him

01:49Yet you brought me out of the womb

01:53You made me trust in you, even at my mother's breast

01:58From birth I was cast on you

02:00From my mother's womb you have been my God

02:03Do not be far from me, for trouble is near

02:08And there is no one to help

02:10Many bulls surround me

02:13Strong bulls of Bashan encircle me

02:16Roaring lions that tear their prey

02:19Open their mouths wide against me

02:22I am poured out like water

02:24And all my bones are out of joint

02:27My heart has turned to wax

02:30It has melted within me

02:32My mouth is dried up like a pot should

02:35And my tongue sticks to the roof of my mouth

02:39You lay me in the dust of death

02:42Dogs surround me

02:44A pack of villains encircles me

02:46They pierce my hands and my feet

02:49All my bones are on display

02:51People stare and gloat over me

02:54They divide my clothes among them

02:57And cast lots for my garment

02:59But you, Lord, do not be far from me

03:05You are my strength

03:07Come quickly to help me

03:09Deliver me from the sword

03:11My precious life from the power of the dogs

03:14Rescue me from the mouth of the lions

03:17Save me from the horns of the wild oxen

03:20I will declare your name to my people

03:25In the assembly I will praise you

03:28You who fear the Lord, praise him

03:32All you descendants of Jacob, honour him

03:36Revere him, all you descendants of Israel

03:40For he has not despised or scorned the suffering of the afflicted one

03:45He has not hidden his face from him

03:49But has listened to his cry for help

03:52From you comes the theme of my praise in the great assembly

03:57Before those who fear you I will fulfil my vows

04:01The poor will eat and be satisfied

04:04Those who seek the Lord will praise him

04:06May your hearts live forever

04:10All the ends of the earth will remember

04:14And turn to the Lord

04:16And all the families of the nations will bow down before him

04:21For dominion belongs to the Lord

04:24All the rich of the earth will feast and worship

04:28All who go down to the dust will kneel before him

04:31Those who cannot keep themselves alive

04:34Prosperity will serve him

04:37Future generations will be told about the Lord

04:40They will proclaim his righteousness

04:43Declaring to a people yet unborn

04:47He has done it

04:49Now when you read that psalm

04:53You immediately think

04:55Don't you of the crucifixion of our Lord Jesus

04:57It's a lament of David

04:59And yet we don't really recognise

05:04When he might have written this psalm

05:06Nor why he would have used such extreme language really

05:11Other than that he is guided by the Holy Spirit

05:16And uses phrases which appear in the passion story of Christ

05:23But there is more to this psalm really

05:26Just than the death of the Lord Jesus

05:30Because this psalm was used for perhaps six, seven hundred years

05:35Before the Lord Jesus

05:36By the worshippers in Israel

05:39And it spoke to them

05:41Just as it can speak to us today

05:44Here is a man who is suffering torment and distress

05:49He is faced by many foes who seem to overpower him

05:55And he's wondering why the Lord does not answer him

05:58And maybe you have found times in your life

06:01When you face those sort of difficulties

06:03That you've entered into problems and difficulties

06:08Perhaps even just thinking about the way that the church has suffered

06:12In the last 50, 60 years as it has shrunk

06:16And we are distressed and wonder why the Lord has not sent us help

06:21As we have sought to make his name known

06:23But our psalmist does not lose his trust in the Lord

06:29He is constant in his dependence upon the Lord

06:33And ultimately in the last part of this psalm

06:37He thinks about the blessings of proclaiming the truth of God

06:43To the ends of the earth

06:45And the fact that through that preaching of the word

06:48That people will turn back to the Lord

06:51The God who lives and who rules over all that he has created

06:56And so it's a psalm also about proclaiming the truth of the gospel

07:03And that's a key theme for us in our service this evening

07:19In my former book Theophilus

07:24I wrote about all that Jesus began to do and to teach

07:28Until the day he was taken up to heaven

07:31After giving instructions through the Holy Spirit

07:34To the apostles he had chosen

07:36After his suffering

07:39He presented himself to them

07:41And gave many convincing proofs that he was alive

07:45He appeared to them over a period of forty days

07:49And spoke about the kingdom of God

07:52On one occasion

07:54While he was eating with them

07:56He gave them this command

07:58Do not leave Jerusalem

08:00But wait for the gift my father promised

08:04Which you have heard me speak about

08:07For John baptized with water

08:10But in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit

08:15Then they gathered round him and asked him

08:19Lord are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel

08:25He said to them

08:27It is not for you to know the times or dates

08:31The father has set by his own authority

08:33But you will receive power

08:36When the Holy Spirit comes on you

08:39And you will be my witnesses

08:41After he had said this

08:51He was taken up before their very eyes

08:54And a cloud hid him from their sight

08:58They were looking intently up into the sky as he was going

09:03When suddenly two men dressed in white stood beside them

09:08Men of Galilee they said

09:10Why do you stand here looking into the sky

09:14This same Jesus

09:16Who has been taken from you into heaven

09:19Will come back in the same way you have seen him go into heaven

09:23Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem

09:28From the hill called the Mount of Olives

09:30A Sabbath day walk from the city

09:33When they arrived

09:36They went upstairs to the room where they were staying

09:39Those present were Peter, John, James and Andrew

09:44Philip and Thomas

09:46Bartholomew and Matthew

09:49James son of Alphaeus

09:51And Simon the Zealot

09:53And Judas son of James

09:55They all joined together constantly in prayer

10:00Along with the women

10:01And Mary the mother of Jesus

10:03And with his brothers

10:05In those days Peter stood up among the believers

10:10A group numbering about 120

10:12And said

10:14Brothers and sisters

10:16The scripture had to be fulfilled

10:18In which the Holy Spirit spoke long ago through David

10:21Concerning Judas

10:23Who served as guide for those who arrested Jesus

10:27He was one of our number

10:30And shared in our ministry

10:32With the payment he received for his wickedness

10:36Judas bought a field

10:39There he fell headlong

10:41His body burst open

10:43And all his intestines spilled out

10:45Everyone in Jerusalem heard about this

10:49So they called that field in their language

10:52Akil Dharma

10:53That is, field of blood

10:55For, said Peter

10:58It is written in the book of Psalms

11:00May his place be deserted

11:03Let there be no one to dwell in it

11:06And

11:06May another take his place of leadership

11:09Therefore

11:11It is necessary to choose one of the men

11:14Who have been with us the whole time

11:16The Lord Jesus was living among us

11:19Beginning from John's baptism

11:21To the time when Jesus was taken up from us

11:24For one of these

11:26Must become a witness with us

11:28Of his resurrection

11:29So they nominated two men

11:33Joseph called Bar Sabbath

11:35Also known as Justice

11:37And Matthias

11:40Then they prayed

11:42Lord, you know everyone's heart

11:45Show us which of these two you have chosen

11:48To take over this apostolic ministry

11:51Which Judas left to go where he belongs

11:54Then they cast lots

11:57And the lot fell to Matthias

11:59So he was added to the eleven apostles

12:03This chapter

12:05The book of Acts itself

12:07Starts with a huge assumption

12:09The assumption is that you have read

12:12And understood Luke's first book

12:15Luke's gospel ended with the resurrection

12:19And a brief mention of the ascension

12:22Verses one and two of Acts chapter one

12:25Are a brief link to the opening

12:27Of Luke's gospel

12:29Which apparently is a traditional Greek way

12:32For starting a book

12:33That is in two parts

12:35Luke is widely regarded

12:38As a good historian

12:40And although some people have

12:42Challenged what he wrote

12:44In many instances

12:46Subsequent research

12:48And discoveries

12:50Have only confirmed

12:51That Luke was right

12:53All along

12:54So verse three

12:57Is quite crucial

12:58After his suffering

13:00He presented himself to them

13:02And gave many convincing proofs

13:05That he was alive

13:07He appeared to them

13:08Over a period of forty days

13:10And spoke about

13:13The kingdom of God

13:15Jesus proved

13:18He was alive

13:19The disciples

13:21Were convinced

13:22Luke was not there

13:26But he too

13:27Has been convinced

13:29Remember what Jesus said

13:32To Thomas

13:32When he doubted

13:33When his doubts

13:35Were overcome

13:36In John chapter 20

13:38Verse 29

13:38Because you have seen me

13:41You have believed

13:42Blessed are those

13:44Who have not seen

13:45And yet have believed

13:48Luke does not

13:50Fully explain

13:51All the proofs

13:52Of Jesus' resurrection

13:53But he thinks

13:55He's done enough

13:56To convince his readers

13:57Jesus truly has risen

14:00From the dead

14:02And that too is important

14:05Jesus died

14:06The gospel message

14:08Is not only

14:09That Jesus died

14:11To take the punishment

14:12For our sins

14:13So that we might be free

14:14From God's judgment

14:16And wrath

14:16But Jesus also

14:19Rose from the dead

14:20He could have only

14:22Arisen from the dead

14:24If he died

14:25Yes

14:27Jesus has conquered death

14:29And opened the way

14:30For those

14:32His forgiveness

17:10That it wasn't

17:14That Jesus

17:15Has already given

17:16But now revealed

17:18In a different light

17:20Or perhaps

17:21These things

17:22Are included

17:22In the letters

17:23To the churches

17:24As Jesus

17:26Taught

17:26His disciples

17:28And they included

17:29It in their writings

17:30Whatever the case

17:33It seems

17:34Jesus taught

17:35The group

17:35Of disciples

17:36In such a way

17:37That they came

17:38To a deeper

17:38Understanding

17:39Of the truths

17:41Of scripture

17:41And let us not

17:43Forget that

17:44Jesus also said

17:45To the Jewish

17:46Leaders

17:46In John 5

17:49You study

17:50The scriptures

17:51Diligently

17:52Because you think

17:53That in them

17:54You have eternal life

17:55These are the very

17:58Scriptures

17:58That testify

18:00Yet you refuse

19:05That comforts

19:06And strengthens us

19:07In our daily

19:09So as Paul says

19:14Is God breathed

19:15And is useful

19:16For teaching

19:17Rebuking

19:18Correcting

19:18And training

19:19In righteousness

19:20So that the servant

19:22Of God

19:23May be thoroughly

19:24Equipped

19:25For every good work

19:27Years ago
