The book of Ruth is many people's favourite in the Bible. It tells the story of a young widow who decides to leave her famine-stricken pagan country of Moab and follow her Mother-in-Law into the promised land in search of food. It is a tale of bereavement, love, redemption, new beginnings, and a very special baby! John Billett from Long Crendon Baptist Church completes our four-part series on Ruth: Now, finally married, Ruth gives birth to a baby that will change the course of history for all mankind!

00:00Thank you for the welcome. It's good to be here again to fellowship with you and to join
00:22together in worshipping the Lord. The psalmist tells us, give praise to the Lord, proclaim
00:31his name, make known among the nations what he has done. Sing to him, sing praise to him,
00:40tell of all his wonderful acts, glory in his holy name. Let the heart of those who seek
00:46the Lord rejoice. Look to the Lord and his strength, seek his face always. It's a good
00:57exercise to find a little book like Titus tucked away, isn't it? It's a precious part
01:04of God's holy word. Titus 2 verses 11 to 14. For the grace of God has appeared that offers
01:16salvation to all people. It teaches us to say no to ungodliness and worldly passions
01:27and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age while we wait for
01:37the blessed hope, the appearing of the glory of our great God and saviour, Jesus Christ,
01:45who gave himself for us to redeem us from all wickedness and to purify for himself a people
01:56that are his very own, eager to do what is good. Some of you know that I worked for a while in
02:06in retirement for Wycliffe Bible Translators. So I've always had an interest in Bible translation.
02:14We've got God's word in our own language and more than one version too. Some have still got nothing
02:21and Wycliffe recently produced their annual report for 2024-2025 and some of the figures
02:32are interesting. During the year 20 new Bible translations were completed,
02:42which meant another 40 million people had the word of God in their own language.
02:50Another 88 new testaments were completed, which meant another 11 million people
03:00had the word of God, a part of it, in their language. And 270 language projects started,
03:10where there had been no translation, a work started in 270 different languages,
03:18which means that another 70 million people will begin to have something to read of God's
03:26precious word. Mind you it can take 20 or more years to produce a new testament in terms of
03:34translation, especially when the translators start with nothing and have to learn the language
03:40and have to invent an alphabet and then teach people to read and produce a dictionary
03:46before they can get to grips with God's word. It can be a long process but it's going on
03:53at this present time. This year is the 500th anniversary of the printed English Bible and
04:06that's a thrilling story too, we're so privileged. But listen, at the moment there are still
04:14985 languages in this world with no scripture and nothing started yet,
04:24so there's a lot to be done. That's 1,500 million people with nothing and nothing started,
04:35still waiting for what you and I have and take for granted. So please pray for Bible translation,
04:44pray for Wycliffe Bible translators. The latest magazine is quite interesting,
04:49there's a story of a woman there called Lowry and she's Welsh and she grew up speaking Welsh,
05:00she went to school speaking Welsh and she read the Welsh Bible but the Welsh Bible
05:09was even older than the 1611 King James Version, so she struggled with it until I think it was in
05:202013, so what's that 12 years ago now, a new translation was made in Welsh
05:30and she started to read the Bible in a natural language of Welsh and she made the comment,
05:36God comforts me through his word and she was delighted. Actually now she works for Wycliffe
05:44Bible translators, so lives are being changed, people are being blessed as they get the word of
05:50God in their own language. So please pray for Bible translation and for the work of God in missions
05:58generally anyway. I'm delighted to come to speak from Ruth chapter 4. I have a habit of when I get
06:07a book, usually an ordinary book or a commentary sometimes, I read the last chapter first and
06:16if I don't like the ending I'm put off from the book. Ruth chapter 4 is a delightful book and I
06:25believe I've got the best chapter. Okay it's chapter 4, it's the end. If you've not been for
06:31the other three chapters, do your homework or you can tune in on the website and it could tell you
06:38what to do and hear what's gone on before. But we'll read the last chapter, Ruth chapter 4.
06:48Meanwhile Boaz went up to the town gate and sat down there just as the guardian
06:57redeemer he had mentioned came along. Boaz said come over here my friend and sit down.
07:09So he went over and sat down. Boaz took 10 of the elders of the town and said sit here
07:18and they did so. Then he said to the guardian redeemer Naomi who has come back from Moab
07:28is selling the piece of land that belonged to our relative Elimelech. I thought I should bring
07:35the matter to you for your attention and suggest that you buy it in the presence of these seated
07:42here and in the presence of the elders of my people. If you will redeem it do so but if you
07:51will not tell me and I will know for no one has the right to do it except you and I am next in line.
08:02I will redeem it he said. Then Boaz said on the day you buy the land from Naomi you also acquire
08:14Ruth the Moabite the dead man's widow in order to maintain the man's the name of the dead man and
08:23his property. At this the guardian redeemer said then I cannot redeem it because it might endanger
08:32my own estate. You redeem it yourself I cannot do it. Now in earlier times in Israel for the redemption
08:42and transfer of property to become final one party took off his sandal and gave it to the other.
08:51This was the method of legalizing transactions in Israel. So the guardian redeemer said to Boaz
09:01buy it yourself and he removed his sandal. Then Boaz announced to the elders and all the people
09:09today you are witnesses that I have bought from Naomi all the property of Elimelech,
09:16Kilion and Malon. I have acquired Ruth the Moabite Malon's widow as my wife in order to
09:26maintain the name of the dead with his property so that his name will not disappear from among
09:33his family or from his hometown. Today you are witnesses. Then the elders and all the people at
09:43the gate said we are witnesses. May the Lord make the woman who is coming into your home like Rachel
09:51and Leah and together built up the family of Israel. May you have standing in Ephrathah and be
10:00famous in Bethlehem. Through the offspring the Lord gives you by this young woman may your family be
10:08like that of Perez whom Tamar bore to Judah. So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife.
10:20When he made love to her the Lord enabled her to conceive and she gave birth to a son.
10:28The women said to Naomi praise be to the Lord who this day have not left you without a guardian
10:35redeemer. May he become famous throughout Israel. He will renew your life and sustain you in
10:43your old age for your daughter-in-law who loves you and who is better to you than seven sons
10:51has given him birth. Then Naomi took the child in her arms and cared for him. The women living there
11:01said Naomi has a son and they named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse the father of David.
11:13This then is the family line of Perez. Perez was the father of Hezron. Hezron the father of Ram.
11:22Ram the father of Aminadab. Aminadab the father of Nashon. Nashon the father of Salmon. Salmon
11:30the father of Boaz. Boaz the father of Obed. Obed the father of Jesse and Jesse the father of David.
11:41So reads the word of God. The key word is redemption. In a sense it's key to the whole
11:48book. It's certainly key to this chapter and redeem, redeeming, redemption, kinsman, redeemer
11:54or guardian, redeemer occurs 10 times in this chapter. To redeem means to deliver by paying a
12:06price or to buy back. As well as being history in itself it's a lovely picture of what the Lord
12:19Jesus Christ has done for us. There is a redeemer. 1 Peter 1 18 tells us you are not redeemed
12:28with corruptible things like silver or gold but with the precious blood of Christ. There is a
12:37redeemer. And what a difference a redeemer makes. What a difference it made for Ruth.
12:43From sorrow to rejoicing. From loneliness to love. From poverty to plenty. From problems to praise.
12:54From tragedy to triumph. From uncertainty to security. Some of the benefits of being redeemed.
13:04Benefits for Ruth then and for us in Christ now. So I want us to look at the chapter under three
13:12headings. Verses 1 to 12 I've called Redemption Arranged. Verses 13 to 16 I've called Redemption
13:23Accomplished. And verses 17 to 22 Redemption Applied. It's all about redemption. We look at
13:34Ruth and we also look at the Lord Jesus Christ. Redemption Arranged. That's the first 12 verses
13:43of this chapter. Again you really need to read the first three chapters to get the whole thing.
13:49That's your homework. Bit backward maybe but nevertheless it's worth doing that.
13:56Redemption Arranged. Notice in the chapter the people who are mentioned. There are three groups
14:05here if you like. There is Boaz. This wealthy farmer who is of the same family as Elimelech
14:18and who has heard about, well I won't go back too far you must read that,
14:21has heard about Ruth and so on and then in the end she goes to the threshing floor and she
14:26sleeps at his feet and so on and asks him to redeem her. It's a common practice it would seem
14:36redemption for property is mentioned in Leviticus 25 25 and redemption for people Deuteronomy 25
14:44from people Deuteronomy 25 verses 5 to 10 and if you wanted to do something like that to redeem
14:52property or a person the place to meet was at the city gate. We would take someone to court maybe
15:01to sort things out and get a legal ruling and I've never done that yet. I hope I never do but
15:08there you are. There is a legal process for doing these things and this was the way they did it and
15:14it was at the city gate where the elders of the people, the leaders of the town would meet and
15:23business would be transacted and so Boaz is going off the next day promptly to get this all sorted
15:33out and he goes there to meet another kinsman or guardian redeemer to sort things out and it's
15:47interesting it fascinates me that he's hardly there it seems to me this is verse one he's
15:54gone down to the town gate and sat down there just as the guardian redeemer he mentioned
16:01came along is that amazing why did he turn up then at that time why was it him well you know why
16:11because God is sovereign and he works his purposes out and this is no accident this is the divine
16:18hand of God and Boaz greets him and says come over here my friend and sit down so they sat down
16:28to talk together and to sort things out this is official business
16:35and then the other group here you've got Boaz you've got the close relative and you've got the
16:39elders 10 official men chosen by Boaz 10 it would seem again was the official number to transact
16:49this kind of business and to sort things out they were organized it was being done properly
16:56there's a scripture isn't there 1 corinthians 14 40 that came to mind do all things decently
17:03and in order and that should always should it not be a mark of the church of the lord jesus christ
17:10that we we're honorable that we're just and right that we do things properly it's certainly a mark
17:17isn't it of the greatness and grace of god romans 5 verse 6 as you see at just the right time
17:26while we were still powerless christ died for the ungodly calvary was at just the right time
17:36in the purposes of god because god is not a god of confusion but of order and purpose
17:44and so here's this group meeting to arrange the redemption of property and person
17:54the problem is of course versus three to five it's spelled out again for us
17:58that here's this land that belonged to a limeleck and it's it's up for sale if you like it would
18:05seem some people think it was mortgaged maybe and that had got to be paid back others think it was
18:12just that naomi was selling it because she needed money because she needed to live
18:19but because it was a a real hardship to sell land that had been in your family
18:27maybe for generations which is why this law of redemption was allowed
18:33so that if it had been sold or was being sold someone in the family could buy it back they had
18:42first right to buy it back the deed had to be done publicly officially legally and it would include
18:52the land and the widow of marlon naomi's son in order we read that the name of the deceased
19:03is maintained there was need to put things right to restore what was lost
19:12again it reminds us of our own condition doesn't it we are sinners in need of redemption
19:19we're in a hopeless condition ourselves we need rescue we need redemption otherwise the
19:27awfulness of judgment and hell stands before us but to redeem a price has to be paid and it
19:38is a price that should be paid by the closest relative that was the way of doing it
19:44and you see how boaz talks to this man whose name we don't know and when he hears that this land is
19:51in a sense up for grabs up up for sale up for redemption he says i will redeem it i guess he's
19:57got an eye on enlarging his own estate in improving his position and whatever but then when boaz says
20:06whoever buys the land has with it ruth the widow of malone the moabites and as soon as the
20:18close relative hears that he says i can't redeem it because it's going to affect my own family
20:25position because any children born by ruth would inherit the benefits of the land and not
20:36this man's own family so he refused to redeem it it just struck me reading that what he missed out
20:44on in a way what he lost out on in the purposes of god but it reminded me that sometimes we can miss
20:54out on what god has for us you remember when the lord jesus in luke chapter 9 spoke to
21:02different people saying follow me and they made excuses lord i would follow you but let me first
21:08go and bury my father probably wasn't dead at all it was just an excuse to get off the hook
21:13let me first get back and work my new oxen or whatever excuses i would follow you but
21:20is there a danger that we're ever like that we know what god wants of us we've been stirred by
21:27his spirit there's a choice before us but there are costs involved what will we do
21:36lord i would follow you but let's beware that beware being like the rich young ruler we call
21:44him in matthew chapter 19 when jesus called him to follow he went away sorrowful because he had
21:54many possessions he wasn't going to give those up to follow the lord jesus christ how he lost out
22:02how sad
22:05but the price that wasn't paid by the close relative was to be paid by boaz you got this
22:12strange custom if we do a deal we might say shake on it or if we're buying a property we might do it
22:19properly and sign up for it but there the person giving away the right takes his sandal off and
22:28hands it over as a sign that he's letting go his right to redeem the land and giving it to someone
22:35else actually if you trace it back a bit in deuteronomy 25 it was sometimes a sad sign
22:46sometimes it was handed over and they spat on it as well it was kind of a bit harsh
22:52not so in the time of boaz though i did wonder what happened to the sandal afterwards
22:59would you go home with one with one uh sandal on and one foot bare we're not told that that's that
23:06was the way the deed was done and boaz could rejoice i've bought it i've acquired it i'll
23:16perpetuate the name of the dead boaz redeemed the land the property and ruth how wonderful
23:28and isn't it again a picture of the price that the lord jesus christ paid for us at calvary he
23:37satisfied the law's demands he died for our sins hebrews 10 10 says we've been made holy
23:47through the sacrifice of the body of jesus christ once for all and he more than the lord jesus more
23:57than perpetuates our name for the next generation he says in john 10 28 i give them eternal life
24:05and they shall never perish isn't that wonderful what redemption is that in and through the lord
24:12jesus christ so we see the people we see the price and then in verses 11 and 12 we see the prayer
24:19the elders there of that town they declare they are witnesses they sign up to the deal as it were
24:28they acknowledge it and they pray for god's blessing god's blessing especially on ruth
24:39it's always good to praise it before a wedding if you know someone in the family who's getting
24:43married you should pray for them we've got a wedding coming off um at long crendon on the
24:496th 7th of get it right 7th of june well a young lady from our home group unfortunately
24:56we're away on holiday then but it'll be a good wedding and we'll be praying
25:00that's that's the way to start is it seeking the blessing of god and and
25:08as they pray and as they speak that they they want that
25:14ruth and boaz in the marriage will be as fruitful as rachel and leah you know the the two wives
25:23of jacob and the building of the nation of israel and i like the house of perez
25:32perez again in in the line the family line perez who it seems had an important position and under
25:40large family and that's wonderful they said to boaz may ruth be a fruitful mother in israel
25:49because of the offspring which the lord will give you and again it's a pointer isn't it to
25:55the lord jesus christ he who redeems brings blessings without number psalm 130 verse 7
26:03put your hope in the lord for with the lord is unfailing love and with him is full redemption
26:10it's not wonderful nothing missed out he's the one called it hebrews 10 who brings many
26:17sons to glory such is accomplished by our redeemer so redemption arranged all the details sorted out
26:28leads us secondly to verses 13 to 16 redemption accomplished notice first of all the fact
26:38that boaz took ruth and she became his wife simple short sentence but tremendous consequences
26:49boaz redeemed the land paid the price in full married ruth established a new home
26:58thank god for christian marriages marriages which often these days seem to be under attack
27:07or challenged we live in a a day and generation don't we where many people don't bother about
27:12marriage at all sadly and all sorts of things go on pray for christian marriages for christian
27:20parents and the responsibility of bringing up their children in the ways of the lord
27:28so important reasons 522 tells us husbands love your wives just as christ loved the church
27:35and gave himself up for her he who gave himself up for us to redeem us
27:42sets a standard and a challenge for us
27:48and we just need to understand these things and to apply them in our day and generation
27:55in a day and age when things are drifting sadly in the wrong way
27:59and the fruit the fact the fruit for it says doesn't it that
28:06in verse 13 be the lord and i would have to conceive and she bore a son
28:13it's the lord's doing as it always is he's in control life is in his hands
28:20some 127 verse 3 says sons are a heritage from the lord children a reward from him
28:28so ruth has a child bears fruit and again it's a picture isn't it of the lord jesus
28:36who has redeemed us and by his grace his sacrifice bears fruit john 15 16 that great chapter of the
28:47vine and branches tells us go and bring forth fruit fruit that will last that's why christ died
28:54died we might be saved and we might serve him and we might be fruitful for him what's the fruit
29:01well you can have the fruit of the spirit in galatians 5 or the fruit of righteousness
29:07or the fruit of praise or the fruit of souls we're to bear fruit are we engaged in seeking
29:15to bear fruit are our lives fruitful in the way that we live and in the work that we do
29:23it says doesn't it of the early christians acts 2 verse 47 as the church was growing
29:30the lord added to their number daily those who are being saved and that still happens today
29:39though maybe we don't see so much in our land in these days in other parts of the world
29:44the gospel is spreading and people are coming to christ jesus said i will build my church
29:51and he is doing that and we rejoice in that redemption accomplished
30:00and notice a hint of the future the child born was called obed
30:08it's interesting you can't really see who it was who gave the name it says they
30:14named the child obed was it the women folk you could take it like that were it the people around
30:20listening did uh ruth and boaz or naomi have a hand in it as well well i don't know to wait to
30:26get to heaven to get the answer to that one don't we but uh the name chosen was obed and uh it's
30:35interesting because it seems to mean to serve other means to serve and uh i don't know if it
30:46still is but it used to be and one of my commentators picks this up used to be the
30:51not of the prince of wales you can tell me after it's still true which means i serve well
31:00those who belong to jesus christ are called into his service we're not to sit back and do nothing
31:08we are to serve the lord with gladness and that's a privilege and so the child is named obed the
31:18women rejoices this lovely time with the women folk there who rejoice with naomi you remember
31:24she changed her name in the early chapter because she went out full she came back empty
31:31and she said don't call me naomi anymore call me mara which means bitter i've got nothing
31:39no things are sweet again and the women praise god for what he has done bless you be the lord
31:46who has not left you this day do you praise god for family blessings do you rejoice at what god
31:54is doing do you pray for your children your grandchildren it's so important as a verse in
32:00lamentations chapter 2 verse 19 lift up your hands to him for the lives of your children
32:09many of us have got unsaved children grandchildren great-grandchildren and
32:16our greatest desire for them should be that they should come to know the lord jesus christ
32:21we often talk about children grandchildren about what they should do when they leave school or what
32:27their future should be and what we want for them and it's right to want the best for them but the
32:32best of all is that they come to christ and know him as savior and their lives transformed by the
32:40grace of god because of it that's the way that we should pray so redemption accomplished and then
32:49just at the end there these last few verses redemption applied you got this little genealogy
32:57at the end from verses 18 to 22 here we see the work of god it's brought before us we have this
33:06family tree god was gracious to ruth and naomi and it's so wonderful it's interesting to go to
33:17matthew chapter 1 and see the genealogy there from abraham to jesus and in it it mentions obed
33:27whose mother was ruth but he gets a mention he gets a mention in the genealogy there or you can
33:35go to luke chapter 3 verse 32 where the genealogy is from the lord jesus to adam but again obed is
33:44mentioned there the family line the family tree but again it just reminds me that we need to
33:53move higher than that to what the lord jesus is doing in redemption where he says i will
34:00build my church or go to that great verse in revelation chapter 7 verse 9
34:07verse which is was often quoted in my days at whitcliffe bible translators
34:12about the great multitude that no one can count from every nation tribe and language before the
34:18throne and in front of the lamb how wonderful how glorious the effects of the redemption
34:25of the lord jesus christ ephesians 1 11 says it's the plan of him who works out everything
34:33everything in conformity with the purpose of his will that's glorious and in that we rejoice
34:44and so the list of names we're not going to go through the names now our time has gone but all
34:50names there in in in the family tree but i want you to notice the last line which is a repeat of
34:59the last line of verse 17 obed the father of jesse jesse the father of david now doesn't that
35:10strike a chord jesse the father of david so this little incident in a little town bethlehem
35:20has great repercussions
35:27for this little babe born to ruth and boaz named obed i serve is in the line that leads to jesus
35:38because of course the lord jesus is great david's greatest son it points us to the
35:47line of redemption which runs through the whole of scripture and we glorify god in that
