Teen pleads guilty to reckless driving that caused five deaths in Kuching

A 15-year-old boy pleaded guilty at the Kuching Magistrate's Court on Wednesday (May 14) to a charge of reckless driving, which caused the deaths of five people in a multi-vehicle crash on Jalan Stutong Baru earlier this year.  He also pleaded guilty to a separate charge of driving a motor vehicle while underage before Magistrate Ling Hui Chuan. 00:24to him. Both offenses were committed at about 1.10 p.m. on January 14. The court fixed June 17 for

00:31next mention, pending a probation report from the Social Welfare Department, and granted bail at

00:375,000 ringgit with his parents acting as sureties. In a separate proceeding, the teen's 35-year-old

00:44father pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 33, Subsection 1A of the Child Act 2001 for allowing

00:53his son to drive without supervision. Senior assistant registrar Noraini Ahmad imposed a fine

01:00of 15,000 ringgit in default of 12-month jail. The court also ordered him to perform 100 hours of

01:07community service within six months. Both father and son were unrepresented. Meanwhile, the wife of

01:13one of the victims who died in the incident was present in court to follow the development of the

01:18case. Jamila Hassan called for appropriate punishment be imposed on the teenager. She said that due

01:24to the negligence of the teenager and his parents, her five children, aged between six and nineteen,

01:31lost their father.
