The driver, whose car caught fire after a hit-and-run with a motorcyclist on the Setiawangsa-Pantai Expressway (SPE) on Sunday, has been charged at the KL Magistrate's Court with reckless driving and failing to stop after an accident.

34-year-old trader, Sum Kah Fei, pleaded not guilty to the charges before Magistrate Haneefa Ariffin on Wednesday (Dec 18).

00:14driving and failing to stop after an accident. Some cafe pleaded not guilty to the charges
00:19before Magistrate Hanifa Arifin on Wednesday. For the first charge, the 34-year-old trader
00:25was accused of driving recklessly, causing a collision with motorcyclist Muhammad Nur
00:31Faiz Saini alias Ausaini, who suffered serious injuries, at 12.35pm on December 15. The charge
00:39was made under Section 42, Subsection 1 of the Road Transport Act 1987, which carries
00:46a jail sentence of up to five years and a fine between R5,000 and R15,000, as well as
00:54a minimum five-year driving ban. For the second charge, he was accused of failing to
01:00stop the vehicle after the accident at the same location and time. The charge was made
01:05under Section 52, Subsection 1 of the same Act, which carries a fine of up to R2,000
01:13or up to six months' imprisonment. During proceedings, Deputy Public Prosecutor Muhammad
01:20Amir Hanif Ahijman proposed bail of R12,000 for both charges. However, lawyer Kwek Kia
01:28Ping, representing the accused, appealed for lower bail as his client has to support his
01:33wife and child. After hearing submissions from both parties, Magistrate Hanifa set bail
01:38at R6,000 for both charges and fixed February 24 for next mention.
