Ahead of the final Everton match at Goodison Park, 86-year-old identical twins Pamela Knowles and Pauline Jones remember visiting the stadium for the first time 70 years ago.
00:00We started going to Goodison Park when we were about 14 or 15 because I had an uncle who was a shareholder and so we jumped at the chance to go, didn't we?
00:12The first day we went, walked up steps and see the lovely green pitch, you know, and the excitement was there, you know, all the crowds.
00:24The audience was quite large and it was, how many thousand, 60,000, it was normal, wasn't it?
00:3360,000 on a good day, wasn't it?
00:35Yeah.
00:37Uncle Harold used to buy us a cushion.
00:40Oh yes.
00:41Hire a cushion for the match.
00:44Yes, and if they weren't happy about the match, they'd just throw them on the floor as they were leaving.
00:51No, it was quite exciting and it was a beautiful day the first day we went, wasn't it?
00:55Oh yes.
00:56It really was.
00:57Summer was out and the green pitch and there was a big buzz from the crowd and then the team came out well.
01:06Our roar went up like I'd never heard before.
01:09Oh yes.
01:10And it was, it was uplifting, it was just incredible.
01:14Goalkeeper Albert Dunlop, remember him?
01:17Oh yes, yes.
01:18Alex Parker.
01:19Alex Young, wasn't it?
01:20On the wing.
01:21Yeah.
01:22Bobby Harris and Jimmy Harris, remember one of them?
01:23Yeah, brothers, yes.
01:24And of course, good old Dave Hickson.
01:25Yes, our favourite.
01:26He was blonde, wasn't he?
01:27He was just a nice lad.
01:28And there was no side to them then because there wasn't all the glory that there is.
01:34They had only even got ÂŁ20 a week, did they?
01:35And just walking to the ground was exciting, wasn't it?
01:36Because people seemed to be coming from everywhere.
01:37Yes.
01:38And it was quite exciting.
01:39And the season tickets were half a gram, two and six days.
01:40Yeah.
01:41Yeah.
01:42And it was quite exciting.
01:43Yeah.
01:44Oh my goodness.
01:45Yeah.
01:46Two shillings for the ladies.
01:47You can remember more than I can.
01:48They'd only even got ÂŁ20 a week, did they?
01:51And just walking to the ground was exciting, wasn't it?
01:53Because people seemed to be coming from everywhere.
01:57Yes.
01:59And it was quite exciting.
02:03The season tickets were half a cram, two and six days.
02:08Oh, my goodness.
02:09Two shillings for the ladies.
02:13You can remember more than I can.
02:14I remember one time we went to Manchester
02:18and the game was called off just before we got there.
02:23So we turned around and when we came back into Liverpool,
02:27the driver asked if anybody wanted to go and watch the Liverpool match.
02:31So a number of people got up to watch.
02:34In those days, you know, you were a Liverpool person
02:38and you watched both teams, really.
02:41Yes, yes.
02:42Now, Mum always did, didn't she?
02:44She tried to keep the peace in the family.
02:46Yeah.
02:47Being one of five children.
02:49We had plenty of discussions on a Saturday night.
02:53It was a thing to do, wasn't it?
02:56Oh, the toffee lady.
02:58Yeah.
02:59Oh, of course, you mustn't forget the Everton toffee lady.
03:01She used to go around with a basket of toffees,
03:04throwing them to the people near us at the front.
03:08She had a blue bonnet with a big white brim on it.
