00:00Welcome back, another big crowd here today and it is no wonder why it's such an easy venue to get around.
00:06It's one of those circuits on the calendar where you can pretty much see every turn no matter where you're sitting.
00:11There's always something going on at Queensland Raceway.
00:15So we've already had one Dunlop Development Series race, another to come later on this afternoon to complete round four of the DVS Series.
00:23And of course in the main game it's also a double whammy day as well.
00:25Two qualifying sessions and two 100km races heading our way.
00:30Yesterday Jamie Wincup started the Super Sprint race from pole position.
00:35Let's see how the fight for pole unfolded for race 23.
00:39We've been through the off-peak period in this qualifying session where it was very quiet.
00:43Now we're about to hit peak hour and while we're away we saw Alex Davison achieve the quickest time.
00:48Quickly eclipsed by Fabian Coulthard.
00:50The new benchmark sits at 1 minute 9.3 as you can see in the top left-hand corner of screen.
00:56So now we come to the final blast for everybody.
00:59They've made little adjustments, tweaks to tyre pressures.
01:01This is McLaughlin who currently sits in position number three.
01:06This is going to be a great finale to this session with just on three minutes remaining.
01:10Fabian Coulthard already a two-time pole sitter this year.
01:15Scott McLaughlin on the front row yesterday for the second time in two straight races in the championship.
01:22Still searching for pole position.
01:27Seven different drivers have enjoyed a pole so far this year.
01:31We've seen some extraordinary qualifying performances from McLaughlin.
01:33He's been second a couple of times but front row's not enough.
01:36In his words, he wants that pole and it may be that this is the first time we've seen a first lap run which yields the lap time.
01:45We see so far in this session and yesterday that the second lap is slightly better.
01:51So he's got to use, this is the hard bit on the first lap, the two left-hand corners where the right-hand side tyres haven't worked very hard so far
01:58are normally the problem areas for the first lap but it's slightly up.
02:05Good job.
02:05He was very deep under brakes into turn four.
02:08He went straight by that marshalling point to the right which is always a good visual reference.
02:12He made the apex.
02:13This is a very good lap.
02:17David Reynolds has just slotted into second.
02:19It's got McLaughlin goes to the top.
02:21A 1.09.3.
02:22So this is just fractions outside the time sheet yesterday by Winkup and now we ride with him.
02:29James Courtney in the second.

02:34This will certainly shoot him right to the top.
02:36A 1.09 flat.
02:37That's two tenths quicker than yesterday's pole getter.

02:41Watch for Craig and others that flies behind.

02:46That's a great performance but McLaughlin is responding in the first sector.

02:52Coulthard who was the top man's gone down the order.
02:54Mostert's come back as well into fourth.

02:58They've got their tyres on.
03:00They're all in good nick.
03:02And they've learned a lot in the last 24 hours.
03:06That was a good job.
03:07You can see Richard Holway.
03:07Oh, there's smoke coming out of it.
03:10You can see Richard Holway not too excited after that first lap.
03:14He's backed it off.
03:15Okay, mate.
03:16This is really going to hurt him.
03:20There'll be guys who lobbed between the 9.07 and the 9.3.
03:26Shane Van Gisbergen into the 10.

03:29So McLaughlin into pit lane.
03:31Three tenths away.
03:32Or 0.24 away from Winkup.
03:35Lowndes at the moment is 11th.
03:36Remember, he's got that penalty hovering over him.
03:39Plus 2.
03:40That's very disappointing for McLaughlin, who was slightly up on the second lap.
03:45So he would have been really very, very close to the Winkup 9.07.
03:50And a lot of smoke coming from the Gary Rogers Commodore.
03:53Big margin that Winkup's got at the moment.
03:550.25s a lot around this track.
03:59Davison jumps to seventh on that lap that we followed.
04:03And here is his brother.
04:05So at the moment, Alex is eighth.
04:06He's one spot behind Will.
04:11Back to Alex.
04:12Been a good run for him so far this weekend.
04:13He's looked quick and aggressive.
04:14The chequered flag's out.
04:15The clock's gone.
04:16Zero.
04:17It's a question of those just completing their laps now.
04:19Winterbottom's down in 14th.
04:21So he's struggled.
04:22Lowndes is in 13th.
04:23And that'll be plus 2.
04:25But it's not done yet.
04:26We won't get too excited about the numbers.
04:28Winkup's on provisional pole.
04:30Alex stays in eighth.
04:31Most of them, I think, have done their laps.
04:36Here we go, though, with Will Davison.
04:39Winkup, McLaughlin, Reynolds, Premmer.
04:40They're all back in the pit lane.
04:42There are those to follow.
04:43There's about half a dozen of them we need to keep an eye on.
04:46He's gone.
04:46Yeah, sorry, mate.
04:47I completely sprayed turn three.
04:51That's Will's voice.
04:52So he ruined turn three.
04:55And Chas Mostert has done a brilliant job in position four, car number 12.
05:00A one-minute 9.3.
05:02Remember, he actually improved on the time that he said earlier.
05:05And his crew are on the radio at the moment.
05:07Absolutely stoked.
05:10Well, that is clearly a career best for the 21-year-old.
05:14He's been top ten in qualifying twice in this early stage of his career.
05:19But now to be on the second row of the grid alongside James Courtney behind yesterday's one-and-two place getters of Winkup and McLaughlin.
05:27What an effort.
05:29His best was tenth at Barba Gallo.
05:31So very, very good performance here.
05:34Well, Jamie Winkup, this weekend just goes from strength to strength.
05:39Second pole position for the weekend.
05:40Well done.
05:41Yeah, thanks, Mike.
05:42Carver's fantastic then.
05:44It's a quick turnaround until the next one.
05:46So we'll try to make a gain again like we always do.
05:49But so far, so good.
05:51But with a little bit of rain, it actually cools the track temp down, which makes for the fast time.
05:56So Carver's great.
05:57You're starting to get that sensation that you've got a bit of a roll on this weekend?
06:00I don't want to talk too soon, you know, because, you know, payday's this afternoon with the racers.
06:07So we're in a good position, but no more, no less than that.
06:10We just need to keep our head down.

06:13The penalty means he'll start from 15th.
06:15Yeah, yeah.
06:17It's so, it's cutthroat.
06:19You know, there's a couple of tenths in, you know, in ten cars.
06:22So you've just got to get it right.
06:23You have a little slide or just make a, you know, have a little moment.
06:26There goes ten spots.
06:28So it's difficult out there, but if it was easy, everyone could do it.

06:39So pretty much the entire field.
06:42And the same front row as yesterday.
06:44We've highlighted Chas Mostert.
06:46Great effort and the leading forward in the bunch as well.
06:49Murrow Engel in 16th.
06:51Tim Slade, by the way, slotted into 10th.
06:54Yeah, that was impressive.
06:55And snuck in right at the end.
06:56It was only 0.4 away from the peak speed.
06:59So nice job.
07:00So Wincup's the man.
07:01But they've got a backup coming up very shortly, qualifying for race 24.
07:09What a weekend it has been already for Jamie Wincup.
07:13And the numbers are so impressive.
07:15He has now equaled Marcus Ambrose as the man with the most poles at Queensland Raceway.
07:20That was his fit, his second for the weekend, the 48th of his career.
07:25So he's just two away now from becoming only the second man in the history of the sport to get 50 or more.
07:31And importantly, his 10th for the season, Combo.
07:34That's what he does to them.
07:35He racks up numbers like that.
07:36And he goes a long way towards buying a result later in the day as a result of that brilliance in qualifying.
07:41It's really extraordinary.
07:42When you talk about the numbers roll off the tongue easy, trying to achieve 48 career poles.
07:47That is an amazing performance.
07:49But now there's no time to celebrate.
07:51Suck it all up.
07:52Go back out and do it again.
07:53Try and make your mind up with your engineer and the rest of the group around you.
07:56What do you want to change?
07:57If anything, are the conditions changing?
07:59What's your tyre bank look like?
08:01And for this man, still no pole position in 2013.
08:05And takes a plus two on that last qualifying performance as well.
08:09So he's got a lot of work ahead of him for race 23.
08:11And the change they made, Neil, it looks more oversteering straight away, doesn't it?
08:14It looks very sideways through turn one and turn two.
08:18And you've got to contain that.
08:19This is a place that you've got to have to balance the car right in the fast stuff.
08:23Yeah, and there's no question again this session is going to be fast.
08:25We've already seen rubber go down from that first qualifying session.
08:28The clouds just come over.
08:29It's actually now cooled down again down here.
08:31That means fast.
08:33We've got Mostert going fast.
08:34We've got McLaughlin with the drama.
08:35He's going to go fast again.
08:37Widderbottom had a drama.
08:38He's going to go fast again.
08:39Jamie Winkup's already gone.
08:40Two tenths faster than yesterday.
08:41And when I stand down here on the pit lane, at the end of the pit lane exit, I'm going
08:45to put my microphone out here in another couple of minutes, and you can hear the cars on
08:49new rubber hard on the rev limiter at the end of this pit straight.
08:52That means they're well up.
08:54This is fast.
08:55On the subject of fast, Reynolds with a one minute 9.3.
08:59That's a very good opening count early in the session.
09:01We typically see the quick times right at the end.
09:04And this looks impressive as well for Mark Winnibottom.
09:06Currently P3 on a 9.5.
09:08Wouldn't be surprised if he goes to the top.
09:10He doesn't on second, but also wouldn't be surprised if Reynolds lowers that 1.09.3.
09:14And he does.
09:16A 9.28.
09:17It's a nice job.
09:18Normally we see this right at the very end of the session.
09:22Remember this time last year when David was here, he was extremely ill.
09:25And we've already seen some pole position performances from him so far in 2013.
09:32Matt Gisberg into position three, VIP Pet Foods for Techno Autosport.
09:37His teammate John O'Webb had a shocking day yesterday.
09:39So Winkup was fastest with a 9.07 in the previous session.
09:46Fastest lap ever by a V8 around here.
09:50And as Mark Larkham just alluded to, with a bit more cloud cover, it may even be faster
09:55in this session.
09:56Everyone's got at least one set of tyres to go.
09:59It's a soft tyre weekend.
10:00And Winterbottom is slightly up on his previous one, but it's not going to be good enough.
10:07And Scafie, here's an odd strategy.
10:09Craig Lowndes has just come in, taken off his used tyres.
10:12He's put a brand new set on it, and he's just departed.
10:14I thought he was going to sit there for ten minutes.
10:16He's just departed with his only set of new tyres left.
10:19He's going to do it all on his own.
10:21Very unusual.
10:22There's a bit of urgency out there at the moment, isn't there, Larko?
10:24They're all rushing back out and getting on with it.
10:26I just wonder whether or not there's even a shower or two somewhere on the horizon.
10:29Because normally we see people prepared to wait a little, or maybe they're just concerned
10:33about potential congestion at the back end.
10:40Reynolds has come into the lane.
10:41Alex Davison's back into the lane there.
10:43First and fourth.
10:44Scott Pye, at the moment, sits in eighth.
10:47It's a nice job.
10:48It's been a tough introduction to the main game for Scottie Pye.
10:53Currently P3.
10:55I reckon we are going to divide at least two tenths for the next one.
10:59All the time is in section two, which is...
11:03It's Blake Smith on the radio to Shane Van Gisberg.
11:07And so he's talking about the one minute 9.4 that Shane's achieved.
11:10And we've already seen from that previous session that you need to be around 9.2 or better
11:15to be somewhere near the sharp end of this field.
11:17Here's Tim Slade who qualified tenths.
11:19He snuck that time in late in the previous qualifying session.
11:22That was a nice job a couple of years ago.
11:25He did an awesome job around here to keep the pressure on Lowndes all the way to the
11:29chequered flag.
11:30That will hurt.
11:31Those tiny little errors where, in this case, he drops the right rear off that exit curb
11:35at turn five.
11:37Just enough to sneak a tenth out of your lap time.
11:39And in this field...
11:40That's a drama.
11:47Slade heads towards Pit Lane.
11:49Here's Erebus Motorsport teammate, Maro Engel, has brought into the top ten at 109.66 for
11:56the SP Tools entry to go into eighth.
12:00There he is.
12:00Remember, Michael Arkham talked about Craig Lowndes getting that better rubber on the
12:06car, but he's down in 24th on the old rubber at the moment at 10.9.
12:11So David Reynolds leads a Ford 1-2 at the top of this qualifying list with Shane Van Gisbergen
12:18and Gerald Wentford, Alex Davison also in the top five as well.
12:23This qualifying continues here for race 24 later on this afternoon.
12:30Welcome back.
12:34Well, Craig Lowndes has instantly made an impact here.
12:38He is currently in second spot.
12:41Delivered a 109.3 to be .06 behind the pace centre, David Reynolds, with six minutes
12:47to go in this qualifying session.
12:49See what this number looks like.
12:51But he dropped the left rear off at turn two.
12:53So that was a 9.5.
12:54No surprise.
12:55So a couple of tenths...
12:56He's in the background there.
12:58But he's a couple of tenths slower on that lap.
13:00And that really hurt him.
13:02He was narrow into turn two, and then he picked the throttle up hard, and the thing slid off
13:07the exit there.
13:07So the lap was ruined in the first third, let alone what happened in the last couple of
13:11sectors.
13:12It's a bit of chaos there.
13:13A couple of blugs have had some previous drama through the year.
13:18But Lowndes would be disappointed with that, Coppo.
13:20That turn two ran wide, too sideways, too narrow on approach.
13:24That really cost him.
13:26That was a two-tenths of a second, maybe even more mistake.
13:28And that will be, in the end, a telling factor because the lap time that we're at right
13:34now, a 9.28 for Reynolds and a 9.34 for Lowndes, that will be eclipsed in this next phase
13:40of qualifying.
13:42Quietly achieving in the background also, Russell Ingle currently tenth.
13:46Car number 66 on a one-minute 9.6.
13:49So we're just about to hit the five minutes to run mark.
13:54Now everybody gets back out on what they've got left in terms of rubber, including the
13:58man that's on the provisional pole at the moment here on screen, David Reynolds.
14:03See what they can all do in the rush hour at the back end.
14:07This is wink-up.
14:10As I said before, that's the gear lever number that you can see is the bigger number on the
14:15left-hand side.
14:16Hey, guys, I was just talking about the cars on the limiter.
14:20Now this is the pit straight behind me coming into turn one.
14:23Fabian Coulthard's gone out on his outlap.
14:24He's on fresh rubber.
14:25Have a listen to this.
14:30Can you hear the cackle at the end there?
14:31That's when the car gets to 7,500 RPM.
14:34And you can't do anything about it.
14:36You're in fifth gear.
14:36You don't select sixth at that point of time.
14:38There's no time to get it back of gear again.
14:40But as a driver, when you come onto the straight and you hit the limiter hard down here, you
14:45know you're going fast.
14:46And it's a great feeling.
14:48Larko, when was it called a cackle?
14:51When does the technical terminology kick in as a cackle?
14:54The other thing is he put a lot of faith in Fab then to do it.
14:57Because if he hung the microphone out and nothing happened, I would have loved to hear the
15:00explanation.
15:01That's a non-cackle.
15:02Lucky there was no tyre diagonally involved in it.
15:08Interesting to look at Jamie Winkup here for a number of reasons.
15:10He's in 19th at the moment with about three and a half minutes to go.
15:15By the way, Alex Davison, who is top five right now, is lighting up the scoreboard on
15:20the first sector.
15:21So, too, is Chas Mostyn.
15:23We'll check back in with Jamie Winkup because there's a bit of history on the line here.
15:27Todd Kelly for the Nissan Altima goes into the five as we ride with Chas Mostyn.
15:32Two green boxes coming off the back of his career best qualifying already.
15:38He's qualified fourth in the earlier session.
15:42And look at the Ford boys coming on your screens.

15:52The other thing to bear in mind, boys, is McLaughlin is down in 26th at the moment.

16:06McLaughlin just did a time then.
16:08So, they've got the rubber back on the car and tidied things up for P3.

18:08Although, he was fast in the first timing intermediate into turn three.
18:13So, he's currently sitting in third, David Reynolds,
18:15in the run to turn four.
18:16Oh, what an unbelievable effort from the Mostert.

18:23And you've got to go beyond position number seven at the moment
18:27to get past one-tenth of a second margin.
18:30That's crazy tight.
18:31That's a fluff gear shift is the difference between being up near the top and not.
18:36One corner remaining now for Reynolds.
18:37Position three.
18:38He's got to find a tiny fraction.
18:40I don't know that he can do it.
18:42The answer is no.
18:45There was a 9-4.
18:46The tyres have given their best.
18:49He ran wide.
18:50Here's Tim Slade on the second row.

18:56Scott McLachlan's still got something in him.
18:59So, Slade stays in fourth.
19:01But a good first sector for McLachlan.
19:04He's backing out of this one, though.
19:05So, a similar story in a different manner, however, for this second qualifying session.
19:12Will Davison gets his first pole position of 2013.
19:17He had pole at this circuit last year on the Sunday.
19:19But, clearly, the story of the day in qualifying has been Chas Mostert, fourth in the previous session.
19:26Now on the front row for the first time in his young V8 supercar career.
19:31A Ford 123 and an Erebus Motorsport Mercedes AMG to round out the first two rows for race 24 later on this afternoon.
19:40At the bottom end of the top ten was where we found our Red Bull Racing Australian Commodores.
19:45Wynn Cup and Lowndes for Tim Blanchard, Scotty Pye, David Wall and Michael Caruso at the rear of the field.
19:53Celebrations for the Blue Oval boys in the second qualifying session.
19:57And Will's on the board in 2013.
20:06So, Will Davison gets his first pole position in the V8 supercars since Abu Dhabi last year.
20:12He becomes the eighth different pole sitter this season and collects the 15th pole position of his career.
20:19What a day.
20:20A Ford 1-2 to start the last race of the afternoon.
20:24And Will is with Mark Claretta.
20:26Well, there's something about Will Davison and Queensland Raceway.
20:29Will, this time last year on Sunday you had pole position as well.
20:32You've done it once again.
20:33Congratulations.
20:34Yeah, it is good.
20:35I've said I'm hanging for a pole.
20:37So, I've done it again like last year.
20:39It's taken till July.
20:40Got a lot of them last year.
20:42So, yeah, it's a good feeling.
20:44We're well aware that the race is the important thing.
20:47You can set the car up very aggressively to sort of rear steer on a new tyre and get one lap out of it.
20:52But it's a real challenge to make it quick over the distance.
20:54So, we managed to get a pole here last year.
20:56We weren't good enough in the race.
20:57So, hopefully today we can learn from yesterday and we can have a much quicker race car than yesterday.
21:02We'll look forward to it.
21:03You can spice up that championship as well.
21:04Will, all the best, mate.
21:05Yeah, and I want to dedicate this to my step-grandfather, Tony Gaze, who's not doing so well.

21:25But, yeah, they gave me a rocket ship today and I'm really happy to get, you know, a front row for DJR.

21:31And also fourth is absolutely brilliant.
21:33And, you know, the overcast might be my thing.
21:36Maybe the hint of rain maybe got me a bit more boosted, a bit more or something.
21:38We haven't had a rain all year.
21:39But, yeah, definitely excited and can't wait to get out there in the racing and have a bit of clean room.
