00:07Alright, Ryan, how have the flick races been for you and what race are you prepared for?
00:12The flick races, they've been like on and off, you know, not doing too well, but it's a practice what counts.
00:21And, you know, I'm prepared for like the next races to come.
00:25What grade are you in?
00:26I'm King and I'm in the 10th grade.
00:2810th grade, so what got you interested in rowing, King?
00:31Well, it was my mom.
00:34She signed me up for the summer program and I've just fell in love with it since.
00:38I did the PCR middle school program for about a year.
00:42Okay.
00:42And then I joined the high school team about three years ago and I'm a junior now, so this is my third year as a high school.
00:50So what got you interested in rowing?
00:52Me and my friend actually joined a clinic like in Contrahocken like two years ago, freshman year.
00:58So I'm a junior.
00:59Okay.
00:59And I just really enjoyed like being out on the river, like connected to nature.
01:03And it just like gave me like two hours of my day to just kind of get off my phone.
01:08Oh, that's pretty cool.
01:09I really enjoyed it.
01:09Yeah.
01:09Okay.
01:10So what got you interested in rowing?
01:12Uh, it was, uh, it was one of my friends, like, uh, like, uh, younger friends that joined when they were like, uh, in high school.
01:21And then I was like two, uh, two years younger than them.
01:24So I joined like their middle school program.
01:26And then from then on and like high school, I, I started to, uh, race in rowing.
01:31Oh, what made you interested in rowing?
01:34Um, my mom told me that it was a really difficult sport.
01:37So I wanted to try it.
01:38Oh, so you were challenging.
01:39So basically you was like, mom, it's not that hard.
01:42I can do this.
01:43Well, she actually motivated me a lot or she wanted me to do it really bad.
01:47She knew it was like really good for me.
01:49What do your workouts look like?
01:50I'm curious about that.
01:51What do you do to get ready?
01:52We'll do mixtures of like, some days will be longer, uh, lower intensity pieces where you're just holding, uh, constant rates and, uh, press for the, uh, whole practice.
02:03And then other times we'll do shorter sprint pieces where you're going at high rates and high press.
02:07So I have another question for you.
02:09How have you been preparing for the flick races and how have the flick races been for you?
02:14Um, my row has been doing really well in the flick races.
02:17They've been really exciting because they're our first or my first like real races.
02:20So what are you doing to prepare for the flick races and what race are you participating in?
02:25Well, city champs is this weekend.
02:27It's a big race.
02:28Okay.
02:28City champs.
02:29Go city champs.
02:30Big weekend.
02:31Um, no, we race, um, practice five days a week at PCR, um, Tuesday through Saturday.
02:37So we've just been really lucky at practice and we've been doing good at the flicks and I'm really excited for city champs.
02:46How do you get to practice?
02:46Um, I take the BSL and then I take the 43 downstream garden.
02:52I don't know what any of that is.
02:54Is that like a bus?
02:56Trained in a bus.
02:57Well, yeah.
02:57Okay.
02:57Trained in a bus.
02:58Yeah.
02:58That sounds like a lot to come row.
03:00So you must really love this sport.
03:01Yep.
03:02I love it.
03:03Okay.
03:03Okay.
03:03Okay.
03:04So how do you get to practice?
03:06Um, I leave about maybe an hour.
03:10This sounds like this is going to be an adventure right here.
03:12So wait a minute, what'd you do there?
03:14Um, I leave, I leave my house around two 30.
03:18I walk down to the Arnie Supper station.
03:21Uh huh.
03:22Um, I get on the train.
03:24It doesn't matter what train it could be the local, the spur, the express.
03:28Usually I take the spur.
03:30I take the spur down to Gerard and then I get off at Gerard and wait for the local to come.
03:35And then I get on the local.
03:37I ride down to spring garden, which is about two more stops after Gerard.
03:41And then at that point, it's just a straight line from spring garden to boathouse route.
03:45Boy, I tell you, that sounds like a lot to roll.
03:48You must really love this.
03:49You must really love it.
03:51So how do you get to practice?
03:52Cause I heard everybody has these like elaborate ways that they get to practice and everything.
03:55So do you have one of those?
03:56I just walk, um, my school is really, really close, like maybe like a 20 minute walk.
04:01So every day after school, Monday through Friday, I just walk here.
04:05What is it in particular that you like about rowing?
04:08Um, I really like how it's a team sport and it's very team focused.
04:13And I just really enjoy working with others.
04:17So what do you love about rowing?
04:19I just love like the atmosphere of like competitions because everyone's like there to have, like everyone's having fun.
04:25Uh, like the air around it.
04:27It's hard to explain, but it's just exciting.
