01:08Conclave Countdown.
01:10Mary Calvey reports from the Vatican with CBS Evening News co-anchor Maurice Dubois.
01:18What a moment. I'm getting goosebumps.
01:20And how they make the smoke turn white.
01:22Chris here's only job is to get the smoke coming out of the Sistine Chapel right there.
01:28Then, real ID day.
01:32What happens when you get to the airport and you still don't have your real ID?
01:36I got all the way through security with just my regular ID.
01:39You can still get one, but be prepared.
01:42I had to call to my wife and have her find a 1099 tax form.
01:48And, White House Gold Rush.
01:51They're gold, all gold.
01:53The golden decor hanging at the White House.
01:56But is it really wood from Home Depot that's been spray painted gold?
02:00Plus, the Karen Reed murder trial just revealed.
02:04Who are you?
02:05The nasty voicemail she left her boyfriend the night he died.
02:09I just hate you.
02:11Very angry voicemails.
02:13Then, a plane just hit my house.
02:16You could never have imagined it would hit your house.
02:20Look at the hole in the roof.
02:22Now, Inside Edition with Deborah Norville.
02:26Hello, everybody, and thank you for joining us.
02:28The eyes of the world are on Vatican City, focused on a chimney on top of the Sistine Chapel.
02:34When white smoke comes out, there's a new pope.
02:36But if it's black, that means the wait continues.
02:39How do they make that smoke?
02:41Mary Calvey has more on that and other news from Vatican City.
02:43Mary?
02:44Thanks, Deborah.
02:45The world is watching for white smoke from the Sistine Chapel chimney that will signal there is a new leader of the world's one and a half billion Catholics.
02:56One hundred thirty-three cardinals from seventy-one countries marched in a solemn procession into the Sistine Chapel to begin their historic deliberation.
03:05All the top networks broke into regular programming to broadcast the event live.
03:10I spoke with CBS Evening News co-anchor Maurice Dubois.
03:14People are talking about continuity of what Pope Francis started.
03:18He appointed four out of five of the cardinals, eighty percent of the cardinals, but they're from different parts of the world, all kinds of different cultures and concerns and priorities.
03:27After solemn prayer service beneath Michelangelo's iconic frescoes, each cardinal took a vow of secrecy.
03:34Timothy Cardinale stolen.
03:35Then...
03:36Extra ominous.
03:37Extra ominous means everybody out, the door slammed and the cardinals were locked inside.
03:45Politico is reporting that several cardinals have watched the movie Conclave to prepare.
03:52This is a conclave, Aldo. It's not a war.
03:54It is a war.
03:56Maurice and I covered the events in 2005.
04:00What do you remember about our time together here 20 years ago?
04:04Wow, so many moments.
04:05But I think the one that sticks with me most is when you and I walked into St. Peter's, into the Basilica, to see Pope John Paul lying in state.
04:16What a moment.
04:17I'm getting goosebumps just thinking about that, right?
04:20So how does the Vatican send out white or black smoke when the ballots are burned?
04:25Inside Edition producer Emma Cady met up with a pyrotechnics expert to demonstrate how it's done.
04:32For black smoke, the Vatican uses a special chemical mixture.
04:35But the ingredients differ when white smoke is created.
04:38So the secret ingredient here is sugar.
04:41And that's what's going to turn black smoke into white smoke.
04:45Yes.
04:46There's the white smoke.
04:47What are your expectations over what will happen in the next couple of days?
04:50Well, you know the saying, right?
04:52Those who talk don't know.
04:53Those who know don't talk.
04:55Each vote can take a couple of hours to complete.
04:58There was one today.
04:59There will be four more each day until someone gets that magic two-thirds majority of 89 votes.
05:06Deborah, back to you in New York.
05:08Thanks, Mary.
05:09Back here at home, if you're traveling domestically by air, check your driver's license.
05:13If it doesn't have that special symbol, you'll need your passport to get on the plane.
05:17Today is the deadline to get your real ID.
05:20And Stephen Fabian has a look at the trouble you may be facing without one.
05:24At long last, real ID is here.
05:27Or is it?
05:28So what happens if you need to catch a flight and you still haven't gotten your real ID yet?
05:33Well, it turns out you may just be handed this flyer at the airport in order to proceed to a different line for an enhanced security check.
05:42A traveler just posted the card he received at the airport in Minneapolis, stating his driver's license is not real ID compliant.
05:50The wait at the secondary line was no big deal, only four minutes.
05:54I'm here at TSA.
05:55This woman also showed up at an airport without her real ID.
05:59I said, I don't have a real ID.
06:00And I said, eh, you're fine.
06:02Handed me this and let me through.
06:04Inside Edition producer Brooke Lewittis was at New York's LaGuardia Airport today.
06:09She also doesn't have a real ID.
06:11I'm here with my regular old driver's license and we're going to see if I can afford this flight to Chicago.
06:18She heads to the regular TSA line and is told to go to a secondary line.
06:22Will she get through?
06:23Just two minutes later.
06:25Well, even with just my regular old ID, my regular New York driver's license, they let me right through.
06:31Even so, the real ID deadline is causing panic across the USA.
06:35This woman is in tears, saying she's missing her aunt's graduation.
06:40This May 7th thing, I can't even get my real ID in time to travel.
06:44This lady doesn't understand why her old driver's license isn't good enough.
06:49I got this license at the DMV.
06:52It's real.
06:53It's my real ID.
06:55Hourless Trent encountered a big headache while trying to get his real ID at the DMV in Philadelphia today as he waited in a line that stretched around the block.
07:05Painful, painful experience.
07:08Then he dealt with another problem because he did not have his Social Security card.
07:13I had to call to my wife and have her find a 1099 tax form that had the Social Security card number on it. She brought it down here.
07:23The ordeal took him three long hours.
07:27By the way, New Jersey has the lowest compliance in the nation. Only 17% of the state's population has a real ID.
07:35President Trump's been boasting about how he blinged out the Oval Office, adding a lot of 24-karat gold details.
07:41But did he really? As Amra Cagliano reports, all that glitters is not always gold.
07:47You see the new and improved Oval Office.
07:50President Trump is pretty proud of his Oval Office makeover.
07:54It becomes more and more beautiful with love. Handle it with great love. And 24-karat gold. That always helps, too.
08:01The gold accents, he says, were created by the same artisan who decorated Mar-a-Lago, his gold guy.
08:07Cabinet maker John LeCart helped add custom-made gold finishes to the Oval Office, including gilded carvings for the fireplace mantle, a White House spokesperson says.
08:17They're gold, all gold.
08:19The president recently showed Fox News personality Laura Ingraham his gold angels.
08:23You have the cherubs from, is that from Mar-a-Lago?
08:27It's angels. They say angels bring good luck. Throughout the years, people have tried to come up with a gold paint that would look like gold, and they've never been able to do it.
08:36Can't do it. You've never been able to, look at that look. You've never been able to match gold with gold paint.
08:42But eagle-eyed sleuths on social media claim the Oval Office decor is a cheap fake.
08:48The Oval Office has been decorated courtesy of Home Depot.
08:51They've matched the Oval Office accents to plastic appliques sold on the Home Depot website.
08:57You can buy it from Home Depot for 58 bucks. And then you go to the other aisle and get the gold spray paint.
09:03They sure look the same. Here they are side by side. Everything seems to match.
09:08You can see it just transforms.
09:11Interior designer Isfira Jensen showed us how it's done.
09:15You can really achieve the same finish at home by just purchasing one of these decorative finishes at Home Depot and easy as spray painting it and then adhering it to a mantle like we did here.
09:26But high-end clients wouldn't use wood, right? They would just get the real thing.
09:30They would use wood. That's typically how you do it. You would use these wood elements and you would adhere them, you know, just like you would any other trim and then you would paint it with a high-end metal paint finish.
09:41In other news today, testimony continues in the Karen Reed trial after jurors got an earful yesterday when they listened to voicemail messages the defendant left for her Boston cop boyfriend in the hours before he was killed.
09:55As Allison Hall reports, a witness testified that Reed called him at least 50 times.
10:00Good morning, Karen. How are you?
10:04A smiling Karen Reed greets supporters before entering court for day 11 of her trial.
10:11But her mood was a lot different in voicemails she left for her boyfriend that were just played in court.
10:19Reed left the blistering message after dropping off Boston cop John O'Keefe at a party.
10:25Then she drove home and waited for him. And waited. Prosecutors say she was in a jealous rage.
10:32Nobody knows who the f*** you are, you f***ing pervert.
10:35The former college professor called O'Keefe's cell phone a mind-blowing 53 times between 12.37 a.m. and 6.08 a.m.
10:44In this voicemail, she accuses him of cheating.
10:47You're f***ing another girl. You're f***ing loser. F***ing hell.
10:53Matt Johnson is covering the trial for Court TV.
10:56You can hear just how angry Karen Reed was. But as they were played, Karen Reed was just paying close attention and not really showing any emotion.
11:06What is Karen Reed's defense saying about those angry voicemails?
11:10You have the defense saying she had no idea where he was. She was angry because she felt that she was abandoned by him and she wanted to know where he was.
11:19In another dramatic moment, a Massachusetts state trooper held up O'Keefe's Nike sneaker along with broken taillight fragments found at the crime scene.
11:29O'Keefe was found dead in the snow around 6 a.m. outside the home where Reed had dropped him off.
11:35She's accused of mowing him down in her Lexus SUV in a drunken fit of fury.
11:44Karen Reed's defense team claims she's being framed and that O'Keefe was killed in a fight with someone inside that house.
11:51A tragic end for a father and son who were flying their kit-built plane when they lost control and it crashed into a house.
11:59The plane's passengers were killed. And now we're hearing from the homeowner who tells Jim Murray he'll have to live somewhere else for at least a year because of the damage.
12:08A ring camera captures the moment of impact. A single engine plane has slammed into a residential neighborhood in Simi Valley outside L.A.
12:19A father and son who were flying in the airplane perished and two homes on the street were severely damaged.
12:25Armin Hovakamian's house caught fire. Just look at the giant hole in his roof. He says he won't be able to live there for an entire year.
12:33I just heard the loud bang. You could never have imagined it would hit your house. No, I was just shocked when I heard the bang.
12:40He shot this video of the fiery wreckage in his backyard. His next-door neighbor's home also sustained damage. The windows were shattered.
12:48Inside there are shards of glass everywhere. Iris Van Kralogen says her parents who are in their 90s usually spend their days in this room.
12:57She says she feels fortunate that they were out for the day. And this is where they just sit there, you know, they sit in their chairs.
13:04I count my blessings that my mom and dad were spared. The crash also took down half a dozen huge palm trees that separated the properties.
13:12The men who died in the crash were both pilots. They were identified as 69-year-old Paul Berkowitz and his son Matthew, 36. Their family dog Brody was also killed.
13:24There's been no word yet as to why the plane crashed, but the pilot reported he was having difficulty controlling it before it went down.
13:32There was controversy over what a pop star wore to the Met Gala. Initial reports said that her lacy Louis Vuitton underwear was adorned with the face of civil rights icon Rosa Parks.
13:43Well, now singer Pharrell Williams who designed the outfit says nope, those reports are wrong.
13:50It's a huge controversy. The singer Lisa from the popular K-pop group Blackpink caused an uproar going pantless because lots of people thought she wore silk panties embroidered with the image of civil rights icon Rosa Parks.
14:06Rosa Parks face on Met Gala underwear goes this E! News headline, but it's now revealed that's not an image of Rosa Parks who became a civil rights legend in 1955 when she refused to move from her seat on a segregated bus in Montgomery, Alabama.
14:23It turns out the singer's underwear worn at the Met Gala was designed by Pharrell Williams and artist Henry Taylor.
14:30The figure featured is not Rosa Parks says a spokesman.
14:34The embroidered face that some thought may look like Rosa Parks is actually based on Henry Taylor's neighbor.
14:41Planning for the 2026 Met Gala is already underway. We'll be right back.
14:47Next. Hang on. Star quarterback Patrick Mahomes and wife Brittany riding in a cart.
14:54But is it safe to ride on the back standing up?
14:57Hello, nervous. Yeah.
14:59And message in a soda bottle.
15:01What was written on the note tucked inside?
15:04Wow.
15:05Inside Edition with Deborah Norville. We'll be right back.
15:09Things were already so difficult for my mom when she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's.
15:16Then she developed agitation that may happen with dementia due to Alzheimer's disease.
15:21She started verbally lashing out, breaking things, wondering at night.
15:27These symptoms were a different kind of difficult.
15:30So we asked her doctor for more help.

17:47That's video of Super Bowl winning quarterback Patrick Mahomes and some buddies tooling around Miami in a golf cart.
18:00One guy standing on the back.
18:02And that's causing concern because it comes just after football legend John Elway's friend and agent died in a golf cart accident.
18:09Amber Cagliano reports on why it is never a good idea to stand on the back.
18:14That's star quarterback Patrick Mahomes and wife Brittany sitting in the back seat of a cart.
18:20So far so good.
18:21But look at the guy hanging off the side.
18:23He's joined by another guy who climbs on the back.
18:28It's a potentially dangerous ride in downtown Miami that's raising lots of eyebrows today because it comes just a week after the death of football legend John Elway's friend and agent.
18:3962-year-old Jeff Spurbeck was reportedly standing on a golf cart being driven by Elway when he fell off and hit his head on the concrete.
18:49Police in Riverside County California call it a tragic accident.
18:53Golf carts aren't just for country clubs.
18:56These days school-aged teens even use them during graduation.
19:02They're also popular in retirement communities.
19:05We showed the Patrick Mahomes video to Michael Graubart who sells golf carts in New Jersey.
19:10Wow.
19:11Very dangerous situation going on right there.
19:14Anybody could fall off, could die, get seriously injured.
19:17Anything could happen here.
19:18Graubart demonstrated what he says you should never do.
19:21He wore a helmet and we steered clear of concrete to make sure he was safe.
19:25You're just hanging off the back of a moving vehicle, trusting the driver.
19:29If I hit a pothole, what would happen?
19:31I'll go flying off.
19:32Very dangerous.
19:33Everyone should be seated.
19:34You got to have seat belts.
19:35Your passengers have to be holding on as well.
19:37Some drivers don't realize the risks.
19:40I think they feel it's more like a toy or, you know, almost like a recreational fun thing to do, but it is a motor vehicle.
19:47There are an estimated 15,000 golf cart related injuries every year in the United States that require a visit to the ER.
19:56We'll be back with more Inside Edition right after this.
19:58Still to come, message in a soda bottle.

23:10And wait until you see how far it traveled.
23:12Here's Allison Hall.
23:13What an incredible find in the sand on a beach in the Bahamas.
23:17It's a Pepsi bottle and there's a message tucked inside.
23:21Clint Buffington and his brother Evan wondered where it came from and when.
23:26The telltale thing really is on the bottom.
23:29You can see the number 75 which we think is a date stamp.
23:32So we think that this is from 1975.
23:351975?
23:36That's half a century ago.
23:39My brother.
23:40They tingled with excitement as they unfurled the message inside the bottle.
23:44Wow.
23:45Here it is.
23:46I'm a ninth grade student from Penn Tuckett Regional Junior High School.
23:51This is a science experiment for I am in an oceanography course.
23:55This was launched by a Coast Guard ship in the month of May 1976.
24:00Please send to Peter R. Thompson, West Newberry, Massachusetts.
24:05So who's Peter Thompson?
24:07Here he is.
24:0850 years after he tossed the Pepsi bottle into the Merrimack River in Massachusetts.
24:14Peter's now 63.
24:16The bottle floated roughly 1200 miles all the way to the Bahamas.
24:22Peter, how crazy was that for you to see something that you wrote from 50 years ago?
24:27I was just in shock.
24:29It threw me back to when I was 14, you know, this, this nerdy, naive kid.
24:35And it's like a portal.
24:36It's like a window into someone else's life.
24:38I mean, to me, that's the magic of it.
