00:04The words of the Indian Army tonight

00:05as it launched what it's calling Operation Sindhu.

00:10This is one of nine sites in Pakistan

00:13and Pakistan-controlled Kashmir that were hit.

00:18Pakistan says a child is among the casualties.

00:22India says it's destroyed what it calls militant infrastructure.

00:27Ahead of the strikes, Pakistan had vowed to meet fire with fire.

00:34As the missiles flew, airline tracking apps

00:37showed planes diverting from the area,

00:40some flights being sent to Karachi.

00:43For the past two weeks, tensions have simmered

00:46along what is one of the world's most dangerous borders.

00:52In India, there has been mounting fury

00:55at the murder of 26 of their fellow citizens.

00:59In a brazen attack by terrorists,

01:01India insists are backed by neighbouring Pakistan.

01:05The gunman struck a tourist resort

01:07high in the mountainous region of Kashmir.

01:10The victims targeted, according to survivors,

01:13because they were Hindu.

01:16Calls for restraint seemed destined to fall on deaf ears.

01:20Now is the time for maximum restraint

01:23and stepping back from the brink.

01:27That has been my message in my ongoing outreach

01:30with both countries.

01:31Make no mistake.

01:33A military solution is no solution.

01:36The urgent question now is whether this

01:39is the beginning of an escalating cycle of violence

01:43between two nuclear armed powers.

01:48And Rohit is here to make sense of all this for us.

01:52Look, this was a story that's happened in the last hour

01:54and it was still developing as we went on air.

01:56So what's the latest?

01:58Well, the Indian government is saying

02:00that justice has been served.

02:02This is, of course, the language of conclusion,

02:05of finality, the language that says this job is done.

02:11Of course, it knows that it is not done

02:13because Pakistan has said also that this was a cowardly act

02:17and is therefore indicating that it will find a way to respond.

02:22India is saying nine sites hit.

02:24They're saying this was targeted, focused, measured,

02:26non-escalatory.

02:28We know that the Pakistani government

02:30will interpret all of that differently.

02:33And in part, what's so significant here

02:36is that the military operation here

02:40has not just been inside Pakistan,

02:43inside Pakistan-controlled Kashmir,

02:46but inside Pakistan itself.

02:49Listen, obviously this is happening.

02:52We're reading stuff as we go on.

02:53I've seen Pakistan saying various things.

02:55Its jets are in the air,

02:57but at the same time it's saying

02:58it will respond at a time of its own choosing.

03:01Obviously, these two countries have a history of war

03:05and, as we've said several times,

03:07they're nuclear armed.

03:08What do you assess as the likelihood

03:10of this escalating to a dangerous point?

03:12Well, it's certainly a worrying moment indeed

03:15for both countries and for the wider world too.

03:19I think people will draw a parallel

03:20with what happened in 2019

03:23when India struck Balikot again.

03:26That was inside Pakistan itself.

03:31I think one of the key differences here, though,

03:34is who's in the United States.

03:37The nature and the tone

03:39of the Trump administration now,

03:42it has been extremely supportive

03:44of Indian response to what happened

03:46a few weeks ago.

03:49J.D. Vance was inside India

03:51when that happened, in fact,

03:52the U.S. vice president.

03:54And so one concern here

03:56may be that the escalatory,

03:58the sort of de-escalatory voices

04:00that might have been there previously

04:02aren't necessarily there now.
