00:001 Timothy chapter 1
00:04From Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus, by order of God our Savior and Christ Jesus our
00:12hope, to Timothy, my true son in the faith, may God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord
00:20give you grace, mercy, and peace, warnings against false teaching.
00:26I want you to stay in Ephesus, just as I urged you when I was on my way to Macedonia.
00:35Some people there are teaching false doctrines, and you must order them to stop.
00:41Tell them to give up those legends and those long lists of ancestors, which only produce
00:47arguments.
00:48They do not serve God's plan, which is known by faith.
00:51The purpose of this order is to arouse the love that comes from a pure heart, a clear
00:58conscience, and a genuine faith.
01:01Some people have turned away from these and have lost their way in foolish discussions.
01:07They want to be teachers of God's law, but they do not understand their own words or the
01:12matters about which they speak with so much confidence.
01:16We know that the law is good, if it is used as it should be used.
01:22It must be remembered, of course, that laws are made, not for good people, but for lawbreakers
01:29and criminals, for the godless and sinful, for those who are not religious or spiritual,
01:36for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, for the immoral, for sexual perverts,
01:43for kidnappers, for those who lie and give false testimony, or who do anything else contrary
01:51to sound doctrine.
01:53That teaching is found in the gospel that was entrusted to me to announce the good news
02:00from the glorious and blessed God.
02:03Gratitude for God's mercy.
02:05I give thanks to Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength for my work.
02:12I thank Him for considering me worthy and appointing me to serve Him, even though in the past I spoke
02:19evil of Him, and persecuted and insulted Him.
02:23But God was merciful to me, because I did not yet have faith, and so did not know what I was
02:29doing, and our Lord poured out His abundant grace on me, and gave me the faith and love
02:36which are ours in union with Christ Jesus.
02:40This is a true saying, to be completely accepted and believed.
02:46Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.
02:50I am the worst of them.
02:51But God was merciful to me, in order that Christ Jesus might show His full patience in dealing
02:59with me, the worst of sinners, as an example for all those who would later believe in Him
03:06and receive eternal life.
03:09To the eternal King, immortal and invisible, the only God, to Him be honor and glory forever
03:16and ever.
03:18Amen.
03:18Timothy, my child, I entrust to you this command, which is in accordance with the words of prophecy
03:27spoken in the past about you.
03:30Use those words as weapons in order to fight well, and keep your faith and a clear conscience.
03:38Some people have not listened to their conscience and have made a ruin of their faith.
03:43Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have punished by handing them over to the
03:50power of Satan.
03:52This will teach them to stop their blasphemy.
03:58Chapter 2
03:59Church Worship
04:01First of all then, I urge that petitions, prayers, requests, and thanksgivings be offered
04:08to God for all people, for kings and all others who are in authority, that we may live a quiet
04:16and peaceful life, with all reverence toward God and with proper conduct.
04:21This is good, and it pleases God our Savior, who wants everyone to be saved and to come to
04:29know the truth.
04:30For there is one God, and there is one who brings God and human beings together, the man
04:37Christ Jesus, who gave himself to redeem the whole human race.
04:42That was the proof at the right time that God wants everyone to be saved, and that is
04:48why I was sent as an apostle and teacher of the Gentiles, to proclaim the message of faith
04:55and truth.
04:57I am not lying.
04:58I am telling the truth.
05:00In every church service, I want the men to pray, men who are dedicated to God and can
05:07lift up their hands in prayer without anger or argument.
05:11I also want the women to be modest and sensible about their clothes and to dress properly, not
05:18with fancy hairstyles or with gold ornaments or pearls or expensive dresses, but with good
05:25deeds, as is proper for women who claim to be religious.
05:32I do not allow them to teach or to have authority over men.
05:38They must keep quiet.
05:39For Adam was created first, and it was not Adam who was deceived, it was the woman who was deceived
05:48and broke God's law.
05:50But a woman will be saved through having children, if she perseveres in faith and love and holiness
05:57with modesty.
05:58This is a true saying.
06:08If a man is eager to be a church leader, he desires an excellent work.
06:13A church leader must be without fault.
06:17He must have only one wife, be sober, self-controlled, and orderly.
06:23He must welcome strangers in his home.
06:26He must be able to teach.
06:28He must not be a drunkard or a violent man, but gentle and peaceful.
06:33He must not love money.
06:35He must be able to manage his own family well and make his children obey him with all respect.
06:42For if a man does not know how to manage his own family, how can he take care of the church
06:48of God?
06:49He must be mature in the faith, so that he will not swell up with pride and be condemned
06:56as the devil was.
06:58He should be a man who is respected by the people outside the church, so that he will not
07:04be disgraced and fall into the devil's trap.
07:08Helpers in the Church
07:09Church helpers must also have a good character and be sincere.
07:15They must not drink too much wine or be greedy for money.
07:19They should hold to the revealed truth of the faith with a clear conscience.
07:24They should be tested first, and then, if they pass the test, they are to serve.
07:30Their wives also must be of good character and must not gossip.
07:35They must be sober and honest in everything.
07:38A church helper must have only one wife and be able to manage his children and family well.
07:46Those helpers who do their work well win for themselves a good standing and are able to
07:51speak boldly about their faith in Christ Jesus.
07:54The Great Secret
07:56As I write this letter to you, I hope to come and see you soon.
08:02But if I delay, this letter will let you know how we should conduct ourselves in God's household,
08:09which is the church of the living God, the pillar and support of the truth.
08:15No one can deny how great is the secret of our religion.
08:18He appeared in human form, was shown to be right by the Spirit, and was seen by angels.
08:26He was preached among the nations, was believed in throughout the world, and was taken up to heaven.
08:36Chapter 4
08:37False Teachers
08:39The Spirit says clearly that some people will abandon the faith in later times.
08:46They will obey lying spirits and follow the teachings of demons.
08:50Such teachings are spread by deceitful liars, whose consciences are dead, as if burnt with a hot iron.
08:59Such people teach that it is wrong to marry and to eat certain foods.
09:04But God created those foods to be eaten, after a prayer of thanks, by those who are believers, and have come to know the truth.
09:13Everything that God has created is good.
09:17Nothing is to be rejected.
09:19But everything is to be received with a prayer of thanks,
09:24because the word of God and the prayer make it acceptable to God.
09:29A Good Servant of Christ Jesus
09:31If you give these instructions to the believers,
09:35you will be a good servant of Christ Jesus,
09:38as you feed yourself spiritually on the words of faith,
09:43and of the true teaching which you have followed.
09:46But keep away from those godless legends, which are not worth telling.
09:51Keep yourself in training for a godly life.
09:55Physical exercise has some value,
09:58but spiritual exercise is valuable in every way,
10:02because it promises life both for the present and for the future.
10:08This is a true saying,
10:10to be completely accepted and believed.
10:13We struggle and work hard,
10:15because we have placed our hope in the living God,
10:18who is the Savior of all and especially of those who believe.
10:23Give them these instructions and these teachings.
10:26Do not let anyone look down on you because you are young,
10:31but be an example for the believers
10:33in your speech, your conduct, your love, faith, and purity.
10:39Until I come, give your time and effort
10:41to the public reading of the Scriptures
10:43and to preaching and teaching.
10:46Do not neglect the spiritual gift that is in you,
10:50which was given to you when the prophets spoke
10:52and the elders laid their hands on you.
10:56Practice these things and devote yourself to them,
11:00in order that your progress may be seen by all.
11:03Watch yourself and watch your teaching.
11:07Keep on doing these things,
11:09because if you do,
11:10you will save both yourself and those who hear you.
11:13Do not rebuke an older man,
11:25but appeal to him as if he were your father.
11:28Treat the younger men as your brothers,
11:31the older women as mothers,
11:33and the younger women as sisters with all purity.
11:36Show respect for widows who really are all alone.
11:42But if a widow has children or grandchildren,
11:45they should learn first to carry out their religious duties
11:48toward their own family,
11:50and in this way repay their parents and grandparents,
11:54because that is what pleases God.
11:57A widow who is all alone,
11:59with no one to take care of her,
12:01has placed her hope in God,
12:03and continues to pray and ask him for his help night and day.
12:09But a widow who gives herself to pleasure
12:11has already died,
12:13even though she lives.
12:16Give them these instructions,
12:18so that no one will find fault with them.
12:21But if any do not take care of their relatives,
12:24especially the members of their own family,
12:27they have denied the faith
12:28and are worse than an unbeliever.
12:31Do not add any widow to the list of widows
12:35unless she is over 60 years of age.
12:38In addition,
12:39she must have been married only once
12:41and have a reputation for good deeds.
12:45A woman who brought up her children well,
12:48received strangers in her home,
12:50performed humble duties for other Christians,
12:53helped people in trouble,
12:55and devoted herself to doing good.
12:57But do not include younger widows in the list,
13:01because when their desires
13:03make them want to marry,
13:05they turn away from Christ,
13:07and so become guilty of breaking
13:08their earlier promise to him.
13:11They also learn to waste their time
13:13in going around from house to house.
13:17But even worse,
13:18they learn to be gossips
13:19and busybodies,
13:21talking of things they should not.
13:23So I would prefer
13:25that the younger widows get married,
13:28have children,
13:29and take care of their homes,
13:30so as to give our enemies
13:32no chance of speaking evil of us.
13:35For some widows have already
13:37turned away to follow Satan.
13:40But if any Christian woman
13:42has widows in her family,
13:44she must take care of them,
13:46and not put the burden on the church,
13:49so that it may take care
13:50of the widows who are all alone.
13:53The elders who do good work as leaders
13:56should be considered worthy
13:57of receiving double pay,
14:00especially those who work hard
14:02at preaching and teaching.
14:04For the scripture says,
14:05Do not muzzle an ox
14:07when you are using it to thresh grain,
14:10and workers should be given their pay.
14:13Do not listen to an accusation
14:15against an elder
14:17unless it is brought by two or more witnesses.
14:20Rebuke publicly all those who commit sins,
14:24so that the rest may be afraid.
14:27In the presence of God,
14:29and of Christ Jesus,
14:30and of the holy angels,
14:32I solemnly call upon you
14:34to obey these instructions,
14:37without showing any prejudice
14:38or favor to anyone
14:40in anything you do.
14:42Be in no hurry to lay hands on people
14:45to dedicate them to the Lord's service.
14:47Take no part in the sins of others.
14:51Keep yourself pure.
14:53Do not drink water only,
14:55but take a little wine
14:56to help your digestion,
14:58since you are sick so often.
15:01The sins of some people
15:02are plain to see,
15:04and their sins
15:05go ahead of them to judgment,
15:07but the sins of others
15:08are seen only later.
15:10In the same way,
15:12good deeds are plainly seen,
15:14and even those that are not so plain
15:16cannot be hidden.
15:22Chapter 6
15:23Those who are slaves
15:26must consider their masters
15:27worthy of all respect,
15:30so that no one will speak evil
15:32of the name of God
15:33and of our teaching.
15:36Slaves belonging to Christian masters
15:38must not despise them,
15:40for they are believers too.
15:42Instead,
15:43they are to serve them even better,
15:46because those who benefit from their work
15:48are believers whom they love.
15:51False Teaching
15:52and True Riches
15:54You must teach
15:56and preach these things.
15:58Whoever teaches
15:59a different doctrine
16:00and does not agree
16:01with the true words
16:02of our Lord Jesus Christ
16:04and with the teaching
16:06of our religion
16:06is swollen with pride
16:08and knows nothing.
16:10He has an unhealthy desire
16:12to argue
16:13and quarrel
16:14about words.
16:15And this brings on
16:16jealousy,
16:17disputes,
16:19insults,
16:20evil suspicions,
16:21and constant arguments
16:23from people
16:23whose minds
16:24do not function
16:25and who no longer
16:27have the truth.
16:28They think that religion
16:29is a way
16:30to become rich.
16:32Well,
16:33religion does make us
16:34very rich
16:35if we are satisfied
16:36with what we have.
16:37What did we bring
16:39into the world?
16:41Nothing.
16:42What can we take
16:43out of the world?
16:45Nothing.
16:46So then,
16:47if we have food
16:48and clothes,
16:49that should be
16:50enough for us.
16:52But those who want
16:53to get rich
16:53fall into temptation
16:55and are caught
16:56in the trap
16:57of many foolish
16:58and harmful desires
17:00which pull them down
17:01to ruin
17:02and destruction.
17:03for the love
17:04of money
17:05is a source
17:06of all kinds
17:07of evil.
17:08Some have been
17:09so eager
17:10to have it
17:10that they have
17:11wandered away
17:12from the faith
17:13and have broken
17:14their hearts
17:15with many sorrows.
17:17Personal Instructions
17:19But you,
17:21man of God,
17:22avoid all these things.
17:24Strive for
17:25righteousness,
17:27godliness,
17:28faith,
17:29love,
17:30endurance,
17:31and gentleness.
17:32Run your best
17:34in the race
17:35of faith
17:36and win
17:36eternal life
17:37for yourself.
17:39For it was
17:39to this life
17:40that God called you
17:41when you firmly
17:43professed your faith
17:44before many witnesses.
17:46Before God
17:47who gives life
17:48to all things
17:49and before Christ
17:50Jesus
17:51who firmly
17:52professed his faith
17:53before Pontius Pilate,
17:55I command you
17:56to obey
17:57your orders
17:58and keep them
17:59faithfully
18:00until the day
18:01when our Lord
18:02Jesus Christ
18:03will appear.
18:05His appearing
18:06will be brought about
18:07at the right time
18:08by God,
18:09the blessed
18:10and only ruler,
18:11the King of kings
18:12and the Lord
18:13of lords.
18:15He alone
18:15is immortal.
18:17He lives
18:17in the light
18:18that no one
18:19can approach.
18:21No one
18:21has ever seen him.
18:23No one
18:23can ever see him.
18:25To him
18:26be honor
18:26and eternal
18:27power.
18:28Amen.
18:29Command those
18:30who are rich
18:31in the things
18:32of this life
18:33not to be proud,
18:35but to place
18:36their hope
18:36not in such
18:37an uncertain
18:38thing as riches,
18:40but in God
18:40who generously
18:42gives us
18:43everything
18:43for our enjoyment.
18:45Command them
18:46to do good,
18:47to be rich
18:48in good works,
18:50to be generous
18:51and ready
18:52to share
18:53with others.
18:54In this way
18:55they will store
18:56up for themselves
18:57a treasure
18:58which will be
18:59a solid foundation
19:00for the future
19:01and then
19:02they will be able
19:03to win the life
19:04which is
19:05true life.
19:07Timothy,
19:08keep safe
19:09what has been
19:10entrusted
19:10to your care.
19:12Avoid the profane
19:13talk
19:13and foolish
19:14arguments
19:15of what some
19:16people wrongly
19:17call knowledge.
19:19For some
19:19have claimed
19:20to possess it
19:21and as a result
19:22they have lost
19:23the way
19:24of faith.
19:25God's grace
19:26be with you all.
