00:001 John 1 The Word of Life
00:06We write to you about the word of life, which has existed from the very beginning.
00:12We have heard it, and we have seen it with our eyes.
00:15Yes, we have seen it, and our hands have touched it.
00:18When this life became visible, we saw it.
00:22So we speak of it, and tell you about the eternal life which was with the Father and
00:26was made known to us.
00:27What we have seen and heard we announce to you also, so that you will join with us in
00:32the fellowship that we have with the Father and with His Son, Jesus Christ.
00:37We write this in order that our joy may be complete.
00:41God is light
00:42Now the message that we have heard from His Son and announce is this, God is light, and
00:48there is no darkness at all in Him.
00:51If then we say that we have fellowship with Him, yet at the same time live in the darkness,
00:56we are lying both in our words and in our actions.
01:00But if we live in the light, just as He is in the light, then we have fellowship with
01:05one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from every sin.
01:10If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and there is no truth in us.
01:15But if we confess our sins to God, He will keep His promise and do what is right.
01:20He will forgive us our sins and purify us from all our wrongdoing.
01:25If we say that we have not sinned, we make a liar out of God, and His word is not in us.
01:34Chapter 2
01:35Christ, Our Helper
01:37I am writing this to you, my children, so that you will not sin.
01:41But if anyone does sin, we have someone who pleads with the Father on our behalf, Jesus
01:47Christ, the Righteous One.
01:49And Christ Himself is the means by which our sins are forgiven, and not our sins only, but
01:55also the sins of everyone.
01:57If we obey God's commands, then we are sure that we know Him.
02:01If we say that we know Him, but do not obey His commands, we are liars, and there is no
02:06truth in us.
02:07But if we obey His word, we are the ones whose love for God has really been made perfect.
02:14This is how we can be sure that we are in union with God.
02:17If we say that we remain in union with God, we should live just as Jesus Christ did.
02:23The New Command
02:24My dear friends, this command I am writing you is not new.
02:28It is the old command, the one you have had from the very beginning.
02:32The old command is the message you have already heard.
02:35However, the command I now write you is new, because its truth is seen in Christ and also
02:41in you.
02:42For the darkness is passing away, and the real light is already shining.
02:47If we say that we are in the light, yet hate others, we are in the darkness to this very
02:51hour.
02:52If we love others, we live in the light, and so there is nothing in us that will cause someone
02:58else to sin.
02:59But if we hate others, we are in the darkness.
03:01We walk in it and do not know where we are going, because the darkness has made us blind.
03:07I write to you, my children, because your sins are forgiven for the sake of Christ.
03:13I write to you, fathers, because you know him who has existed from the beginning.
03:18I write to you, young people, because you have defeated the evil one.
03:22I write to you, my children, because you know the Father.
03:26I write to you, fathers, because you know him who has existed from the beginning.
03:30I write to you, young people, because you are strong.
03:33The word of God lives in you, and you have defeated the evil one.
03:38Do not love the world or anything that belongs to the world.
03:41If you love the world, you do not love the Father.
03:45Everything that belongs to the world, what the sinful self desires,
03:49what people see and want, and everything in this world that people are so proud of,
03:54none of this comes from the Father.
03:56It all comes from the world.
03:58The world and everything in it that people desire is passing away,
04:02but those who do the will of God live forever.
04:06The Enemy of Christ
04:07My children, the end is near.
04:10You were told that the enemy of Christ would come,
04:12and now many enemies of Christ have already appeared,
04:15and so we know that the end is near.
04:18These people really did not belong to our fellowship, and that is why they left us.
04:23If they had belonged to our fellowship, they would have stayed with us,
04:27but they left so that it might be clear that none of them really belonged to us.
04:30But you have had the Holy Spirit poured out on you by Christ,
04:35and so all of you know the truth.
04:37I write you, then, not because you do not know the truth.
04:41Instead, it is because you do know it,
04:43and you also know that no lie ever comes from the truth.
04:46Who, then, is the liar?
04:49It is those who say that Jesus is not the Messiah.
04:53Such people are the enemy of Christ.
04:55They reject both the Father and the Son.
04:58For those who reject the Son reject also the Father.
05:01Those who accept the Son have the Father also.
05:05Be sure, then, to keep in your hearts the message you heard from the beginning.
05:09If you keep that message, then you will always live in union with the Son and the Father.
05:15And this is what Christ Himself promised to give us.
05:18Eternal life.
05:19I am writing this to you about those who are trying to deceive you.
05:23But as for you, Christ has poured out His Spirit on you.
05:27As long as His Spirit remains in you, you do not need anyone to teach you.
05:32For His Spirit teaches you about everything, and what He teaches is true, not false.
05:37Obey the Spirit's teaching, then, and remain in union with Christ.
05:42Yes, my children, remain in union with Him,
05:45so that when He appears we may be full of courage
05:47and need not hide in shame from Him on the day He comes.
05:51You know that Christ is righteous.
05:54You should know, then, that everyone who does what is right is God's child.
06:02Chapter 3.
06:04Children of God.
06:05See how much the Father has loved us.
06:08His love is so great that we are called God's children.
06:11And so, in fact, we are.
06:13This is why the world does not know us.
06:16It has not known God.
06:18My dear friends, we are now God's children.
06:21But it is not yet clear what we shall become.
06:24But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like Him,
06:28because we shall see Him as He really is.
06:30Everyone who has this hope in Christ keeps himself pure,
06:34just as Christ is pure.
06:36Whoever sins is guilty of breaking God's law,
06:39because sin is a breaking of the law.
06:42You know that Christ appeared in order to take away sins,
06:45and that there is no sin in Him.
06:48So everyone who lives in union with Christ does not continue to sin,
06:52but whoever continues to sin has never seen Him or known Him.
06:57Let no one deceive you, my children.
06:59Whoever does what is right is righteous, just as Christ is righteous.
07:03Whoever continues to sin belongs to the devil,
07:06because the devil has sinned from the very beginning.
07:09The Son of God appeared for this very reason,
07:12to destroy what the devil had done.
07:15Those who are children of God do not continue to sin,
07:18for God's very nature is in them.
07:20And because God is their Father, they cannot continue to sin.
07:24Here is the clear difference between God's children and the devil's children.
07:29Those who do not do what is right,
07:31or do not love others, are not God's children.
07:35Love one another
07:36The message you heard from the very beginning is this.
07:40We must love one another.
07:42We must not be like Cain.
07:44He belonged to the evil one and murdered his own brother Abel.
07:48Why did Cain murder him?
07:50Because the things he himself did were wrong,
07:52and the things his brother did were right.
07:55So do not be surprised, my friends, if the people of the world hate you.
08:00We know that we have left death and come over into life.
08:03We know it because we love others.
08:05Those who do not love are still under the power of death.
08:09Those who hate others are murderers,
08:11and you know that murderers do not have eternal life in them.
08:15This is how we know what love is.
08:17Christ gave his life for us.
08:20We, too, then, ought to give our lives for others.
08:23If we are rich and see others in need,
08:26yet close our hearts against them,
08:28how can we claim that we love God?
08:30My children, our love should not be just words and talk.
08:34It must be true love, which shows itself in action.
08:39Courage before God.
08:42This, then, is how we will know that we belong to the truth.
08:46This is how we will be confident in God's presence.
08:49If our conscience condemns us,
08:51we know that God is greater than our conscience
08:54and that he knows everything.
08:56And so, my dear friends,
08:57if our conscience does not condemn us,
09:00we have courage in God's presence.
09:02We receive from him whatever we ask
09:05because we obey his commands
09:06and do what pleases him.
09:08What he commands
09:09is that we believe in his Son, Jesus Christ,
09:12and love one another,
09:14just as Christ commanded us.
09:15Those who obey God's commands
09:18live in union with God
09:19and God lives in union with them.
09:22And because of the Spirit that God has given us,
09:25we know that God lives in union with us.
09:31Chapter 4
09:32The True Spirit and the False Spirit
09:35My dear friends,
09:38do not believe all who claim to have the Spirit,
09:40but test them to find out
09:42if the Spirit they have comes from God.
09:44For many false prophets have gone out everywhere.
09:48This is how you will be able to know
09:49whether it is God's Spirit.
09:52Anyone who acknowledges that Jesus Christ
09:54came as a human being
09:55has the Spirit who comes from God.
09:58But anyone who denies this about Jesus
10:00does not have the Spirit from God.
10:03The Spirit that he has
10:04is from the enemy of Christ.
10:06You heard that it would come,
10:08and now it is here in the world already.
10:11But you belong to God, my children,
10:13and have defeated the false prophets,
10:15because the Spirit who is in you
10:17is more powerful than the Spirit
10:19in those who belong to the world.
10:22Those false prophets speak about matters of the world,
10:25and the world listens to them
10:27because they belong to the world.
10:29But we belong to God.
10:31Whoever knows God listens to us.
10:33Whoever does not belong to God
10:35does not listen to us.
10:37This, then, is how we can tell the difference
10:39between the Spirit of Truth
10:41and the Spirit of Error.
10:43God is love.
10:45Dear friends,
10:47let us love one another,
10:48because love comes from God.
10:50Whoever loves is a child of God
10:52and knows God.
10:54Whoever does not love
10:55does not know God,
10:56for God is love.
10:58And God showed his love for us
11:00by sending his only Son into the world,
11:03so that we might have life through him.
11:05This is what love is.
11:07It is not that we have loved God,
11:09but that he loved us
11:10and sent his Son
11:12to be the means
11:12by which our sins are forgiven.
11:15Dear friends,
11:16if this is how God loved us,
11:18then we should love one another.
11:20No one has ever seen God,
11:22but if we love one another,
11:23God lives in union with us,
11:25and his love is made perfect in us.
11:28We are sure that we live in union with God
11:30and that he lives in union with us,
11:33because he has given us his Spirit.
11:35And we have seen and tell others
11:37that the Father sent his Son
11:39to be the Savior of the world.
11:41If we declare that Jesus is the Son of God,
11:43we live in union with God,
11:45and God lives in union with us.
11:47And we ourselves know
11:49and believe the love which God has for us.
11:52God is love,
11:53and those who live in love
11:55live in union with God,
11:56and God lives in union with them.
11:59Love is made perfect in us
12:00in order that we may have courage
12:02on the judgment day.
12:04And we will have it
12:05because our life in this world
12:07is the same as Christ's.
12:09There is no fear in love.
12:11Perfect love drives out all fear.
12:14So then,
12:15love has not been made perfect
12:16in anyone who is afraid,
12:18because fear has to do with punishment.
12:21We love because God first loved us.
12:24If we say we love God,
12:25but hate others,
12:27we are liars.
12:28For we cannot love God,
12:29whom we have not seen.
12:30If we do not love others,
12:32whom we have seen.
12:34The command that Christ has given us is this.
12:37Whoever loves God
12:38must love others also.
12:44Chapter 5
12:45Our Victory Over the World
12:48Whoever believes that Jesus is the Messiah
12:51is a child of God,
12:53and whoever loves a father
12:54loves his child also.
12:56This is how we know
12:58that we love God's children.
12:59It is by loving God
13:01and obeying his commands.
13:03For our love for God
13:04means that we obey his commands.
13:06And his commands
13:07are not too hard for us,
13:09because every child of God
13:10is able to defeat the world.
13:12And we win the victory over the world
13:14by means of our faith.
13:17Who can defeat the world?
13:18Only the person who believes
13:20that Jesus is the Son of God.
13:21The witness about Jesus Christ
13:25Jesus Christ is the one who came
13:28with the water of his baptism
13:29and the blood of his death.
13:31He came not only with the water,
13:33but with both the water and the blood.
13:36And the Spirit himself testifies
13:38that this is true,
13:39because the Spirit is truth.
13:42There are three witnesses,
13:44the Spirit,
13:45the water,
13:45and the blood,
13:46and all three give the same testimony.
13:48We believe human testimony,
13:51but God's testimony
13:52is much stronger,
13:54and he has given this testimony
13:55about his Son.
13:57So those who believe
13:58in the Son of God
13:59have this testimony
14:00in their own heart.
14:01But those who do not believe God
14:03have made a liar of him,
14:05because they have not believed
14:06what God has said about his Son.
14:08The testimony is this.
14:10God has given us eternal life,
14:12and this life has its source
14:14in his Son.
14:15Whoever has the Son
14:16has this life.
14:18Whoever does not have
14:19the Son of God
14:20does not have life.
14:22Eternal Life
14:23I am writing this to you
14:25so that you may know
14:26that you have eternal life,
14:28you that believe
14:29in the Son of God.
14:30We have courage
14:31in God's presence,
14:33because we are sure
14:33that he hears us
14:34if we ask him
14:35for anything
14:36that is according
14:36to his will.
14:38He hears us
14:39whenever we ask him,
14:40and since we know
14:41this is true,
14:42we know also
14:43that he gives us
14:44what we ask from him.
14:45If you see a believer
14:47commit a sin
14:48that does not lead to death,
14:50you should pray to God,
14:51who will give that person life.
14:53This applies to those
14:54whose sins
14:55do not lead to death.
14:57But there is sin
14:58which leads to death,
14:59and I do not say
15:00that you should pray
15:01to God about that.
15:02All wrongdoing is sin,
15:04but there is sin
15:05which does not lead to death.
15:07We know that no children
15:08of God keep on sinning,
15:10for the Son of God
15:11keeps them safe,
15:13and the evil one
15:13cannot harm them.
15:15We know that we belong
15:16to God
15:17even though the whole world
15:18is under the rule
15:19of the evil one.
15:20We know that the Son of God
15:22has come
15:23and has given us understanding
15:24so that we know
15:25the true God.
15:27We live in union
15:27with the true God,
15:29in union with his Son,
15:30Jesus Christ.
15:31This is the true God,
15:33and this is eternal life.
15:35My children,
15:36keep yourselves safe
15:37from false gods.
15:38people who doubt
15:40and don't pok easiest
