Opposition leader Hamza Zainuddin has called for Sarawak's oil and gas demands
00:06
to be addressed in a spirit of unity and fairness.
00:10
Petronas is meant for the country.
00:15
Sarawak is also part of Malaysia.
00:17
Petronas is not only meant for Sarawak, Petronas is meant for the whole country.
00:20
Then everyone should get a deal.
00:22
That's how a country should look into it.
00:25
The Perikatan National Deputy Chairman highlighted Petronas' stature as the only Malaysian company
00:31
on the prestigious Fortune Global 500 list, adding that as part of the federation, Sarawak
00:37
also benefits from the dividends Petronas pays to the country.
00:41
While Hamza said Sarawak's claim for a higher royalty payment could be discussed, he cautioned
00:46
against giving in to excessive demands, saying it could undermine national unity.
00:51
There is no other companies in the whole world will come and say, okay, I'll give you
00:56
a royalty of 40% of whatever reservoir that you have.
01:00
I mean, that's not fair for that company.
01:05
On Sarawak's push to control the gas aggregator role, Hamza said the real question to be asked
01:10
is whether it allows for a viable business model.
01:13
They can't ask for it.
01:15
But the most important thing is it's not about the policy.
01:18
It's about the business model so that everyone can have a fair share of the cake.
01:24
So look a fair deal between the state and the company.
01:30
And then on top of that, that company, Petronas, should look into the benefit for the whole
01:35
country, which Sarawak is part of the issue.
01:38
Hamza also called for the issue to be depoliticised, saying federal and state leaders should avoid
01:43
framing the issue as a battle between Pucerjaya and Sarawak.
01:47
He said the state should enter direct negotiations with Petronas as the company is best placed
01:52
to determine a fair royalties formula given its access to all the necessary data and analysis.
