Storms set to stall over the Northeast

Stormy weather is going to linger for days across much of the Northeast in the first week of May.

00:00We're going to continue to track this severe thunderstorm threat, but it is in its final stages in the northeast right now.

00:06We had many thunderstorms that were severe earlier in parts of Ohio, and just a couple of warnings here.

00:12One lingering east of Ithaca, New York, another one for a larger area just south of Huntington, West Virginia,

00:17into areas around the Big Sandy River there between where the forks split and down where it dumps into the Ohio River.

00:24So overall, again, some areas still under a severe thunderstorm.

00:27Watch into eastern Kentucky, but the radar here in the northeast, isolated cells moving into parts of the southwestern area, the White Mountains.

00:36But there's a severe cell still remaining fairly strong into parts of upstate New York.

00:40Non-severe, but still noisy thunderstorms, bringing some lightning to the mix here into areas around Clearfield, PA, and down into other areas.

00:47And also into Columbus, we have some action there as well.

00:49So, again, the active weather continues for a lot of us here, but some of the worst of this will continue to kind of step down just a little bit.

00:58And we're going to be dealing with, again, some, if we look at the drought monitor here, some meaningful drought relief.

01:04It's been so dry really since last fall in many areas along in east of Interstate 81.

01:10We've had some opportunities for drought relief here during the winter.

01:13We had a few rain and snow events that helped some.

01:16There was some rain a couple of months ago that helped.

01:18But if we look at the past 30 days, for example, things have gotten worse.

01:21If you're in the yellow, you're getting less than average rainfall, less than the historical average.

01:26If you're in the green, you've had a surplus in rainfall.

01:29If you're in the dark green, you've had way too much rain.

01:32And that was the case there into the early part of April, early in this 30-day stretch there into parts of Kentucky.

01:39And that's what's leading to still the residual flooding right now down into parts of Louisiana.

01:43So, overall, the drought has only gotten a little worse.

01:46Fires have been a concern, including a 100-acre wildfire today in Union County of New Jersey that has threatened 25 structures.

01:55But we're going to see some decent rain here beginning on Saturday with showers and thunderstorms, even some of this late tonight.

02:00But a better chance for thunderstorms on Saturday.

02:03We're going to have warmth and humidity in advance of this, east of I-81.

02:07And then our storm system will stall.

02:09There's going to be a lot of moisture that just streams in here into the mid-Atlantic coast.

02:12Sunday, rain, showers, some thunderstorms, and a little more lightning to the south and to the north where it will be warm and more unstable.

02:20But here come one round into early in the morning into upstate New York.

02:24But the area near New Jersey and New York City where we could use a lot more,

02:27that will become more likely into especially late Saturday, Sunday, and then Monday and Tuesday

02:32when we really see the most significant drought relief in these areas.

02:36There's your 1-2-inch rainfall forecast in the light green through Wednesday.

02:40Second shade of green into Pennsylvania and most to the Hudson Valley.
