And can you tell if someone wearing a mask is smiling? We do the science to find out.

00:01Speaking of the masks, there's a new report from the New York Times that says that the

00:06widespread use of masks in the United States has made facial recognition increasingly difficult

00:10for many people, and it is also a great way to avoid acquaintances in public.

00:17So it's easier than ever to ignore someone if you see them and you don't want to interact

00:25with them.

00:26You can use it as an excuse.

00:27It's easier to ignore now that we have face cover.

00:30There are a couple things with that, and I think, yes, it does make it easier.

00:34It's an easy out.

00:36It's an easy excuse.

00:38And then on the other side, for the facial recognition, for example, at the Bert Kreischer

00:42show, Preston, when we were in our masks backstage, I kept looking at my phone.

00:47I'm like, what's wrong with this goddamn thing?

00:49And then I realized it's not able to recognize my face.

00:52Yeah, I didn't.

00:52Jeff Gordon, I'd passed by and said hi to him.

00:55I didn't even know it was him.

00:55Oh, no kidding.

00:56I know somebody who also, in order to ignore people in public, will walk around and not

01:02even be listening to headphones, but they'll have earbuds in, right, with the volume down.

01:09Well, yeah, with actually no music or anything playing, but the wires are showing.

01:13So, you know, other people see that.

01:16I didn't see you.

01:17I was listening to music.

01:18Well, I didn't hear you either.

01:21No, I can totally see that, using that as an excuse.

01:24So, yeah, some saying that it's leading to face blindness.

01:29But a mask isn't making you completely anonymous.

01:32Previous research has shown that we rely most heavily on the eyes when identifying someone.

01:38I can.

01:39I'm pretty good at recognizing people.

01:41It's just it was the same thing with me.

01:42I didn't recognize Jeff Gordon until he spoke up.

01:46But for the most part, I can recognize people.

01:49But, yeah, it's confounding stuff.

01:51It certainly is.

01:52I've had that, like, I guess you're not supposed to do this, but, like, I've pulled the mask

01:55down to be like, oh, yeah.

01:57No, like, hey, it's me.

01:58And then they're like, oh, hey, sorry.

01:59I didn't realize it was you.

02:00Hey, it's me, Johnny.

02:04I've surprisingly had more of the listeners of the show pick me out, even if I was wearing

02:09sunglasses and a mask.

02:11I'm like, how do you know?

02:12And I was wearing the big neck, you know, thing, and people still would pick it out.

02:18And I'm like, how do you know this is me?

02:20But it happens.

02:21Have you seen the signs now, though, that says don't pull your mask down to talk to us?

02:25Pull it up.

02:26Like I just said, like, I'd pull it down.

02:28So, you know, if somebody said excuse me or didn't hear what I was saying, forget where

02:32I was.

02:33I was ordering something, like I was up at a window, and it said, please don't pull your

02:37mask down to talk to us.

02:38See the little thing that they're selling now?

02:39They'd say it's sort of a little sort of plastic cage, basically, that keeps the mask

02:45away, puffed out from your mouth.

02:48Not the penis cage.

02:49No, that's a whole different thing when you're a cuck.

02:52But so it allows a little space between the mask and your face for breathing.

02:58I saw a shield the other day I hadn't seen before that came from the bottom up, from

03:03like the chin up.

03:05As opposed to the top down.

03:07Which is kind of interesting.

03:10That's glasses with the mask that tucks down under your chin.

03:18Everyone's all over the place on the mask thing.

03:20You know, I'm a big fan of just for keeping businesses open and making sure that people,

03:23whatever the deal is, whatever the percentage, I got it.

03:25I'm cool with it.

03:27I do miss seeing people's, I smile at people when I go into a place or whatever and I'm

03:32walking past and it's a, it's a thing that I, I like doing that.

03:36You can see with your eyes though.

03:37I mean, when you smile.

03:38I do see with my eyes.

03:39That's usually how you see.

03:40No, and that's, that's not what I'm saying.

03:41I smell with my nose.

03:43I, uh, kick with my feet on your face.

03:47Um, so anyway, what I'm saying is when somebody smiles, you can see it in their eyes that they're

03:53smiling.

03:54Not always.

03:55But I will smile at people, random people at Target or wherever I am.

03:59Uh, especially if it's like a mom holding a baby, I always smile at the babies and I

04:03wonder, but I wonder, I wonder if they can, you know, if they can see it.

05:22Uh, so anyhow, yes, it's, it's easier to ignore someone if you, if you do feel the need that

05:29it's, you know, if you're at the store, maybe you don't have time to stop and talk to somebody,

05:33you can just kind of whisk by and it's a little bit easier this time around.

05:36When this is passed, I bet you there will be people who will stick with the masks at some

05:43level or another.

05:44Especially people who don't like to brush their teeth.
