00:00talk about the power in the pines air show this weekend is lieutenant colonel paul murphy

00:06of the air force is that right sir yes sir good morning paul lieutenant colonel um i guess sir

00:14works sir absolutely uh murph's good too murph murph i like this all right we're on we're on the

00:22uh we're on the nickname basis am i allowed to still say lieutenant colonel you are okay

00:29that's how i prefer because when you say sir you know i always hear that hey listen i'm a sergeant

00:35i work for a living you'll call me sir when you got a high ranking such as the lieutenant colonel

00:40paul murphy here you guys are getting back into power in the pines after a five-year hiatus what's

00:46it been like to be part of the planning of this uh it's been nothing short of exciting we've had

00:53a lot of um hiccups along the way just because the covid rules and everything else that delayed

00:59all this but um these last few months we put a lot of effort into getting getting us back on the

01:05stage and getting this base open back up for all of you to come on and and see what we're doing here

01:10and see all the positive things that we got going on it's really an opportunity to engage all of you

01:16to come on and and see what we're doing here and see all the positive things that we got going on

01:21it's really an opportunity to engage educate and inspire all of our local uh civilian supporters so

01:28we're pretty excited to have everybody it is really more than just an air show there's a lot

01:33of education that goes on with uh various uh stem tables set up education of uh kids and adults alike

01:41and then you represent various things that go on on the base that we might not know about is that right

01:47yes sir so we're we're unique here in that we have the army the navy the marines the coast guard

01:53and the air force so we're going to have representation of all of our services whether

01:57it be their helicopters their humvees um some of their um medical uh setups but everything is going

02:05to be on display for folks to see the mission all the different mission sets that we have and

02:09with the stem we we decided this year that we wanted to get on board with with encouraging young

02:15people right so um we've got over 30 interactive stem displays that we brought in from literally

02:21all over the country that that uh our youth are going to be able to see a lot of the technology that's

02:26being used a lot of it's civilian but some of it's being used on the military side too so

02:31um we wanted to make sure there was a larger education piece so we've actually got

02:35a thousand kids coming out for um you know for a school uh trip on friday kind of separate from

02:42the air show it's kind of like a we opened our doors for them specifically so we could focus on

02:46them and walk around with them so we're pretty excited about that too that's really cool got a

02:50question about uh the plane that you're going to be showing that's all brother i think this is one of

02:56the highlights of the entire show i think this is really really seriously cool i myself am very

03:03deeply into american history can you um describe what the that's all brother show will be about

03:10absolutely so that's that's part of our commemorative air force our our folks that fly

03:15they're all civilians that fly these planes and um they took this one and refurbished it it's actually

03:20it's a c-47 uh that we use in d-day uh for paratroopers so we're pretty excited to see i i believe

03:29one of the last flyable ones that we have what d-day wow i mean actually dropping paratroopers

03:35behind normandy behind enemy lines right june 6 1944 that's insane i mean i that's worse than the

03:44ticket itself although it's for free amazing seriously something to say but that's cool

03:48have you seen that have you have you been on that have you seen it have you had experience with that

03:53plane i've never had the opportunity to take a ride uh we do have some folks uh we actually have

03:59some media folks that i think they're going to be going up uh for a ride and that's just kind of

04:02plug for for some of our local news outlets um i personally never been able to fly on it but i've

04:08seen it fly and we're going to have it on the ground to be able to be seen too um be able to take

04:13pictures and talk with some folks by that we've got we got a couple extra we got a couple other ones

04:20as well yeah man i'm looking at uh you so you have a bunch of shows so it's like uh you know a whole

04:27bunch of shows going on and all different kinds of planes and uh what's what's another highlight

04:33show that you think we should be watching out for so of course our our headliner is the f-16 demo team

04:39uh you're going to get to see an f-16 flying low and fast uh right up along the show line so

04:45it is going to be exciting um we've got ma-65 the coast guard is coming out to do um a rescue

04:53demonstration where they're actually going to have uh people getting picked up we're going to do um

04:58sling a sling demo where we're going to pick up a humvee um we've got f-16s a pair of those flying out

05:06of atlantic city that are coming up wow 15s uh and then we have our civilian performers uh rick volker

05:13he flies an su-26 he's an aerobatic he's one of those crazy aerobatic guys yeah oh wow you know

05:20you can see one of his videos over at wrat.com on the power in the pines post he's the kind of guy

05:28who it looks like he's lost control of the airplane but he sometimes you know but he really hasn't it's

05:34one of those nail-biting like sun shows is that is that kind of what we're going to see at this event

05:39this uh this saturday and sunday at the joint base absolutely he's he's a he's an adrenaline junkie

05:46for sure yeah i love it and you know what else i like is the warbird thunder with the world war ii

05:54planes kind of the old school ones with the trail of smoke coming out the back they were using korea too

05:59uh are you looking forward to that one yeah those are those are some of our um original uh pre-jet

06:07trainers and um they're the precursor to the aircraft that we actually use today to train people the t we

06:13have the t62 texan that i flew myself to teach brand new student pilots coming into the air force so

06:19wow a lot of heritage that's cool this is like all the right stuff seeing this in person you know

06:25we can walk around these planes and stuff like that when they're parked right right there

06:30yeah so our bigger planes you can be able to walk on board our kc-10s our c-17s kc-46

06:38um some of the smaller like fighter planes you can't get too close just due to security but

06:44you can get close enough to take pictures and then of course the warbirds will be kind of lined up

06:48along where they they don't like people walking on those either but you can definitely come up and

06:53talk to the pilots and take pictures and that's cool the pilots are all really interactive so

06:57it's it's it's going to be cool for people to be able to speak to them and this is awesome

07:02lieutenant colonel paul murphy uh i got a question i like to rank stuff carl knows this i drive him

07:08crazy by ranking stuff i would you are allowed to say i'm totally wrong but if i had to rank greatest

07:14american pilot could i put chuck yeager there for breaking the uh sound barrier

07:18i'm a little partial to chuck i've actually seen him speak several times really oh yeah and uh he's

07:27he he was he was somebody that you can look up to but he was old school so i don't know if he

07:32if he's got a rank nowadays um there's there's some pretty pretty fantastic pilots we got in the

07:38military but i know i know but that's that's just one i want in the hall of fame for when we uh make

07:44the pilots hall fan you're not going tom cruise huh no i was gonna say how realistic on a scale

07:49from one to ten is top gun that's a good question uh as a promoter i think he's one of our best

07:56that was extremely diplomatic answer from lieutenant colonel paul murphy there's no training where

08:05somehow you're training with russians and actually trying to shoot each other's jets down and it seems

08:11way more dangerous than training you're saying that that there's a bogey there's a bogey that

08:14element of top gun isn't can't confirm or deny the event we're talking about is power in the pines and

08:22it's actually this weekend it's saturday and sunday and it's at the joint base but it's really

08:29mcguire is that is that what we're where we need to be going where where do people drive to to be part

08:36of this so we have on our website which i'll i'll just say right now is um it's jb mdl dot jb dot mil

08:49and when you go on there it's got maps uh it's got basically everything you need for this show about

08:55um frequently asked questions etc etc but the parking itself there are maps okay for folks that

09:01real familiar um i can tell you the names of the gates uh the mcguire gate the main gate is the

09:07main gate to enter um we've got a couple other access gates for you know some of the people that

09:14are working here um and then some of the folks that are just on base that have other missions that they

09:19have to fulfill so the main mcguire gate is where you want to come in got it i think any tips on uh what

09:26we should bring as a spectator what we shouldn't bring as a spectator tells me i need ear plugs for

09:32this right now i may be that loud is that a good idea your protection is not a bad idea for some of

09:39the louder performers um big ones though no pets um no alcohol no actually another big one is no vapes i

09:47know a lot of folks are like why no vapes well even though uh thc is legal in the state it's still not

09:54legal on the base so we can't really differentiate between what kind of vape you're using so

10:00unfortunately we say no vapes but there will be designated smoking areas well someone's going to

10:05tell me you're going to be high enough with the planes right yeah there is right we encourage

10:10everybody to um to uh to come and enjoy enjoy that yeah as sober as possible but there is going to be

10:17alcohol available for purchase oh wow okay tell me more here comes god what about stuff like lawn

10:26chairs and blankets and stuff you can bring lawn chairs that are individual lawn chairs um any kind

10:32of blankets cameras um you can bring small umbrellas so hand carried is okay you know we don't really

10:39want beach umbrellas though right yeah i might get blown away by some of those flybys where'd my umbrella

10:47go um wow what was the uh oh god i'm sorry uh funny yeah uh that it kind of leads into safety um

10:59just to let everybody know we've spent an enormous amount of time vetting everything to make sure that

11:04this is completely safe um and mitigated uh show so we want everybody to be confident that we we've

11:11got their safety in their minds we've got tons of emergency response personnel all ready to go

11:17medics um our our our police and fire and our off-base uh support from the state police and local police so

11:25that's important because it's while it's thrilling it's obviously very legitimately dangerous absolutely

11:31you know that's uh power in the pines happening at the joint base mcguire dicks lakehurst the

11:37main mcguire entrance is the best spot to go in if you'd like that exact address you can hit up

12:19ejection from one of these jets the pilot somehow pushes gotts his button to get him flying out of

12:26there right right somehow i just became an airborne shoulder doesn't doesn't he need a parachute no

12:33just push the button get him out of the plane actually one of the one of the things you have

12:38is the golden knights don't you have golden knights yeah yep we got jumpers and there's actually

12:44no the the golden knights they fly the the they land in like on on a dime oh that's awesome too

12:51yeah what yeah they're the uh they're the official army uh jump team they're they're they're some of

12:58our best oh i like that and before i let you go here let's get down let me just get down to brass

13:02tax one second nobody's going to listen to this answer uh lieutenant colonel they are lieutenant colonel

13:07you said you had um it sounded to me like every branch of the army except space for of our of our

13:13armed forces at the base except for space force uh any competition between you any rivalry to see

13:20who puts on the best show this weekend interesting um i think that i think that everybody agreed

13:30mutually that we weren't gonna um display any public competition

13:36however it may turn into like you know uh hand-to-hand combat anybody sabotaging anyone

13:45i'm sorry anybody sabotaging a display or you know yeah you might end up seeing somebody kind of like

13:55uh walking around going hey you know these these guys they don't offer this and we offer that

14:00all right so there's gonna be a little friendly competition like the recruiters over there like

14:07no no come over here to this side sign up over here all right i think at the end of the day we're

14:11all on the same team amen to that that's true amen to yeah we we feel that we feel like that spirited

14:17competition is the way we keep it and um um it's all fun it's a lot of fun absolutely i appreciate
