During a House Natural Resources Committee markup hearing prior to the congressional recess, Rep. Bruce Westerman (R-AR) spoke in support of  renaming the ‘Gulf Of America.’

00:30I recognize myself, and I speak in support of H.R. 276, the Gulf of America Act, which

00:39is sponsored by Representative Greene of Georgia.

00:41This legislation seeks to codify a portion of President Trump's Executive Order 141-72,

00:48restoring names that honor American greatness, which renamed the body of water formerly known

00:52as the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America.

00:55By enacting this legislation, we ensure consistency in the reference to laws, maps,

00:59regulations, and records.

01:01On his first day in office, President Trump signed Executive Order 141-72, which directed

01:07the Secretary of the Interior, acting through the Chair of the Board on Geographic Names,

01:11to oversee renaming the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America.

01:15Throughout our country's history, presidents have made changes to the names of America's lands

01:19and waters.

01:20Today, we are taking the necessary steps to codify this action into law permanently.

01:25The Gulf and its 1,600 miles of coastline within the United States are and will continue to

01:31be critical to our country's economy.

01:33The Gulf of America region is home to 14% of the United States' total crude oil production,

01:3848% of the country's refining capacity, and 51% of its natural gas processing.

01:44President Trump has made it a priority of his administration to make America energy dominant,

01:49and that starts in the Gulf of America.

01:52It is nearly impossible to overstate the importance this region has in securing a future of American

01:57energy dominance.

01:59Along with energy, the Gulf is a lifeblood of commercial and recreational fishing, tourism,

02:04and is one of the most productive ecosystems in North America.

02:07President Trump's executive order and Representative Green's legislation embraced the numerous

02:12ways the Gulf of America powers the American economy.

02:15Americans have long been the dominant driving force behind the economic value of the Gulf,

02:21and this legislation simply reinforces the many ways that this treasured resource has

02:25benefited the United States.

02:27I thank Representative Green for her work on this legislation.

02:31The U.S. Geological Survey's Board on Geographic Names has already begun implementing the executive

02:35order, but passing this legislation through the committee will ultimately enact it into law.
