Bakeries struggle with egg prices ahead of Easter

00:00The owners say they don't want to raise the cost of their pastries, especially ahead of Easter.

00:04But right now, with egg costs, it's tough.

00:08Sugary Baking Company is decked out for the holiday.

00:11Easter is one of the higher holidays that we see an increase.

00:17Eggs are involved in almost everything they do.

00:20She's using egg wash.

00:22One of our pies takes 72 eggs.

00:24So we use the shelled, we use liquid, we use whole eggs, egg whites.

00:33All of those have just kind of quadrupled in price for us.

00:37The average price of a dozen eggs hit $6.23, which is 60% higher than a year ago,

00:43and a big uptick since 2020, where the price was just $1.53.

00:49They're still just so expensive.

00:51In my house, we're going to limit the eggs.

00:53I mean, like, really limit them.

00:55You have to do less.

00:56You have to buy the plastic eggs, which doesn't have any yolk or anything inside the egg,

01:02just some candy, which is not really good for the kids.

01:04Before the bird flu outbreak, there were about 315 million hens laying eggs.

01:10As of March, only about 285 million.

01:13We've been going to, like, different stores just to try to not only find the best price for eggs,

01:19but just to find them in general.

01:20According to the USDA, wholesale egg prices are down in the last month,

01:26but Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins saying it might take a while to reflect at the grocery store.
