00:10Over the weekend, thousands took to the streets across southern Europe to protest what they're calling over-tourism,

00:17the first coordinated action of its kind across the region.

00:21Demonstrators in Lisbon arguing that mass tourism is driving up housing costs.

00:26We have less services, more expensive rents, and we believe it has reached its limit.

00:32Folks in other countries say they feel the same.

00:35Spain was one of the most visited nations in the world in 2024.

00:39While the tourism industry is a key part of the nation's economy, the surge is also triggering home and rental price increases.

00:48These record numbers in terms of tourism also pose challenges, and we need to deal with those challenges.

00:52In Barcelona, some locals are spraying tourists with water pistols in what has turned into a symbol of an anti-tourism movement

01:02after protesters originally used them to keep cool from the heat last year.

01:07So we're not going to complain about it. I think that these people are feeling something.

01:11And in Italy, activists are targeting Jeff Bezos' upcoming wedding, which is expected to take place in Venice,

01:18warning it could flood the city with even more tourists during its peak season.
