00:00He fights out of Bukhara, Uzbekistan. Here is the 2016 Olympic silver medalist and the former WBA international and IBF North American champion, Chakram, Wonderboy Giyasov!
00:22Giyasov!
00:23Second's out!
00:35All right, gentlemen, we heard one of the rules earlier. Most important, protect yourself at all times, obey my commands at all times, and as I said, give me a good clean break. Good luck, best of luck.
00:45So, Chakram Giyasov, rated first by the WBA, seventh by the WBO, hoping to get a world title shot, if not in his next fight, hopefully the one after that.
00:57Hopefully the one after that, but first things first, he's got Franco Ocampo, a relative unknown from Argentina, but if he's like some of the Argentine fighters we've called in the past, he is gonna be a tough out.
01:08This is what I'm saying, every time you see a tough Argentinian on the fight card, you never know what you're gonna get. There have been some really good fighters fighting out of Argentina, most notably recently Sergio Martinez, great former world champion, Ryan Castaño.
01:22Castaño, Ocampo told us he knows both those guys, says he's more Sergio Martinez as a fighter than he is the pressure guy that is Castaño.
01:31I don't see the Sergio Martinez, Martinez had brilliant footwork, great upper body movement, he was a southpaw, speed, power. Ocampo doesn't have none of that. Ocampo's a, he has bad balance, but he has good timing, that's what I was talking about by sneaky good, but his technique, that's the main thing that really worries me when it comes to him.
01:50Drops his hands, and he doesn't have the speed to actually get out of the way, but just like that.
01:54You don't see the warning from the referee to Giyasov. It's like death taxes and Giyasov getting warned for low punches. Like, he is not afraid to stray near that belt line to land the body shots.
02:06Why is he one of the best body punchers in boxing? He's pretty aggressive with that body work.
02:11What we saw in his last fight against Miguel Parra in Santa Monica, that was July of last year. He hit Parra with a brutal body shot, as clean as you want, dropped him, but the referee said it was low and in fact took a point away.
02:24Giyasov should have won by knockout, instead it went to the cards, split decision win.
02:29That's one of those fights where the box rack doesn't do it justice. Giyasov, they had a great body shot.
02:34Digging with that left hand, Sergei, I was telling you today, I think Giyasov is going to get a liver shot and put a campo away.
02:40Listen, the longest far goes, it's going to live for Giyasov, especially he wants a big performance. He wants to get these title shots.
02:46The thing about Ocampo, he's a tricky fighter. He already turned southpaw and he went back and forth. It was to his detriment. He got caught in between with the left hook.
02:54But if he can get that jab going and he can switch orthodox and southpaw, do it right and responsibly, he can give issues to Giyasov.
03:04Giyasov on the front foot since the opening bell. He likes to put pressure on his opponents, break them down.
03:10But every time he's kind of stepped up to the upper echelon of opponents, Sergio, he's struggled a little bit.
03:15He used to knock everybody out.
03:18It's like he gets content with just winning rounds and being in control and not losing a fight. I mean, not losing rounds.
03:23But that's not what he needs right now. He needs to get people talking about him again.
03:27Oh, there's a left hook and it almost dropped Ocampo. That'll get people talking here in Atlantic City.
03:33The Argentinian backed in the corner. He eats another left. Shot from Giyasov. He wants a first round knockout.
03:40Can Wonderboy seal the deal here? 30 seconds to go and Ocampo's down.
03:45Beautiful. Not smothering his power. He was backing up. He let Ocampo fall off balance. They're not coming into a shot. He doesn't want any more.
03:53Line.
03:55He is up, but barely the referee taking a good look. Ocampo has the look of resignation in his face.
04:00Giyasov chomping at the bit. He's got 10 seconds to finish the job.
04:0610 seconds is a lifetime when you're that hurt. One more shot.
04:09And that'll do it. They'll make it to the end of the round, but just...
04:12Dust.
04:34Dust.
04:35Okapo with his back flat against the ropes.
05:05You want to get angled whenever you are hurt and you want to lay against the ropes.
05:08You have to stay sideways, not get flat-footed, not get in front of an opponent that long.
05:13He got caught with that left hook twice.
05:15That's the reason he only got knocked out.
05:17Nice right hand to start the round for Okapo, who's trying to show some signs of life.
05:22Sergio, those head shots that Giasov land that rocked Okapo, those were all due to going to the body first.
05:28Okapo's very wary of getting hit in the midsection.
05:30And Giasov's well aware of that.
05:32That's the reason he started this round going to the body.
05:34But that left hook will be there again because Okapo lacks good defense.
05:37He doesn't keep his hands up, and he gets lazy with that.
05:41And it exchanges, which is another thing Okapo.
05:43He likes exchanging with a bigger, faster puncher.
05:46That's a no-no for him.
05:47Giasov looks so much bigger than Okapo.
05:54Both men entered this fight with 91 total rounds.
05:58Identical, they have the same amount of experience, but of course, Giasov's opponents have been much better qualified.
06:03And Dan Giasov is, of course, a former Olympic silver medalist.
06:08Great background in Uzbekistan.
06:10Great training camp.
06:11He's part of that group.
06:12That includes M.J.
06:13Medalliev, Bekramir Melkuziev.
06:15So these guys are extremely talented fighters.
06:18You can see Okapo much more gun-shy now playing defense first.
06:22Yeah, there's levels to this game.
06:23Giasov, like you said, Chris was a silver medalist.
06:25And this is a man who only had 21 fights as an amateur.
06:28So there's levels to the amateur game and, of course, levels in the pro game.
06:35The counter-right.
06:37The Kampa told us he did want to start fast.
06:40I mean, he started fast, but he was at the wrong end of it.
06:43Giasov started a lot faster.
06:46And you can see that Giasov is taking his time being patient.
06:48Okapo fighting for just the first time in 15 months.
06:54So he might have some ring rust, but the Wonderboy already knocked that off of him in the round one.
07:01But, hey, in the past, Chris, we've seen Giasov have opponents down early, have him in trouble,
07:05but he just hasn't been able to put him away.
07:06Yeah, this is where you'd like to see Giasov step on the gas.
07:09I mean, the body language on Okapo after he went down was not good.
07:12He was not looking to be in this fight.
07:15If Giasov lets his hands go, I think the referee is going to step in.
07:17Almost went down there with another left hand.
07:19I think Giasov's looking for the one-punch knockout, though.
07:21I think he's looking for that kind of spectacular statement.
07:24I think he's having such an easy time in there, landing shots.
07:27I mean, everything he throws is landing on Okapo, whether it's a straight jab, a straight right hand.
07:31Fighters are supposed to avoid the first punch.
07:33He's normally in combinations.
07:35Okapo has zero upper body movement.
07:37He has no fast twitch muscle.
07:39Giasov should take advantage of that with combinations and speed.
07:42That's how he gets a stoppage.
07:43And now Okapo's not moving.
07:45Okapo's not moving around, just sitting against the ropes.
07:47He's another left.
07:48He can't get out of the way.
07:50He might have busted that nose, too.
07:51He keeps grabbing at it with her, pawing at it with his glove.
07:54Giasov can't miss.
07:56I mean, he's power pot-shotting this man, and he can't miss with every punch that he throws.
08:04Five seconds.
08:05Well, you probably could have gotten pretty good odds for Okapo to make it out of round
08:11two, and he did it.
08:12And this was a knockdown back in round one.
08:31This is what I liked about Giasov.
08:32Notice right there, Okapo tried to smother the attack.
08:35He tried to clinch, and Giasov's feet just stepped back real nicely to make him fall off
08:39balance, make him run into the shots.
08:41That's experience right there.
08:43That is a guy that's really calm under the pressure.
09:06He caught the corner of Shakram Giasov.
09:09His trainer for this fight is Radzab Butaev, who we saw a few years ago in the ring against
09:14Amatis Danione, a former 147-pound contender as well.
09:18Let's see if Giasov steps on the pedal here.
09:20The last thing he wants to do is allow Okapo to just hang in there for five or six rounds.
09:25I agree.
09:26And that's the knock that we have on Giasov.
09:28He starts off really fast.
09:30He looks good.
09:30He looks like he's going to get the fighter out, and then all of a sudden it goes a distance.
09:34He's having issues with the fighter in front of him.
09:37He shouldn't be having issues with a fighter like Okapo.
09:40Like I said, has bad technique, bad balance.
09:42Doesn't have a quick jab.
09:44See, everything that he's throwing was his landing.
09:47I think you could just bust him up with shotgun jabs if you're Giasov.
09:52Bust up that nose, lose up that face, and have his team or anyone else stop this fight.
09:57Because I can only tell Okapo does take a big punch, but he's going to get hit too clearly.
10:01It's got to be more than one punch for Giasov.
10:07Like to see him put together, three, four punch combination.
10:09We've seen that from him.
10:11Just like that in the past.
10:12Downstairs, back upstairs, that left hook.
10:13That body shot was nice.
10:15Went around the left, the left elbow.
10:18A little combo.
10:20And he can do that again and switch it up with the overhead right around the guard.
10:24That'd be good night.
10:26Giasov, only 16 pro fights at the age of 31.
10:28Had 400 amateur bouts.
10:31So he's seen it all in there.
10:35Okapo just kind of standing there, eating jabs.
10:38I guess he could do that for a while.
10:41Well, he knows that against the ropes.
10:44You know, at least he can have Giasov come at him.
10:46You know, so he feels a little bit more safe against the ropes.
10:48It's in the middle of the ring where he can't compete with the footwork, the speed, the angles.
10:53So in a way, he's safer against the ropes and in the corner.
10:55Such a hot start for Giasov.
10:59The body shot.
11:00That hurt.
11:00That hurt Okapo.
11:01Yeah.
11:02And he might drop.
11:03He might go down, try to fight his way out of it.
11:05But that right elbow is protecting the liver.
11:08I don't know if Giasov knows that he hurt.
11:11Yeah, it was a nice left hook, man.
11:13There's the thing about these athletic fighters, these Uzbek fighters.
11:16When I watch them fight, they throw brilliant combinations.
11:18But they don't double up on shots, especially to the body.
11:21When you have someone hurt like that to the body, even if they block it but hit the forearm,
11:25that's still going to be damaging.
11:28Go downstairs, double, even triple up that body shot downstairs.
11:31By the way, 31 years old, but he still called Giasov Wonderboy.
11:38Does he have to be Wonderman now?
11:41At what point do we make the transition?
11:43I mean, we still call Oscar the Golden Boy, so...
11:45There you go.
11:51What's a word for an old snake?
11:55Serpiente vieja.
11:56We prefer English, Sergio, but you can't hit your sap button at home.
12:04Five seconds.
12:06Three, two.
12:08So another dominant round for Giasov, who doesn't get the finish.
12:12It seems that he can almost get whatever he wants if he goes for the gusto.
12:17A Box Lab Promotions presents an exciting night of boxing
12:21as Kevin Brown faces Uteri Suero live from Orlando next Friday
12:25as part of DAZN's 185-plus fight nights a year.
12:33185, Chris Mannix.
12:35That's a lot.
12:36That's a lot of fight nights.
12:43Whenever you're touching upstairs, it's...
12:46Downstairs is going to be open because, look,
12:48a fighter that's outmatched, like Ocampo,
12:52is not expecting shots to come under like that.
12:54That's a good shot.
12:55That put anyone down right there.
12:58Anytime you land those shots,
12:59that cleanly Giasov should keep going back downstairs.
13:01Even if they're blocked, they're going to hurt just as much.
13:04So round four.
13:13Who would have thought we'd be this deep into the fight?
13:15Night's right in there for Ocampo.
13:17We'd be this deep into the fight after Ocampo nearly got stopped at the end of round one.
13:21Yeah, you're right, Ocampo just wants to go back and find the ropes.
13:27He's backing up there.
13:28He cannot do anything in the middle of the ring.
13:30No, he can't because he doesn't have the legs, the strength, the bounce on his feet.
13:35He gets in trouble in the middle of the ring.
13:37So, yeah, at least against the ropes, you're getting the feeling of the ropes going back and forth.
13:43And some fighters can actually fight well with that bounce.
13:45Giasov, as Chris mentioned earlier, fighting in memory and in honor of his daughter, Miriam,
13:59who passed away just a few months ago.
14:04That cannot be an easy thing to do.
14:06I couldn't even imagine being in camp and having that tragic news.
14:11It's horrible news.
14:12It just happened one month ago.
14:13And now he's back right here fighting.
14:15It's incredible.
14:16I mean, the way that fighters compartmentalize their personal life to take care of business,
14:21it's on another level.
14:22Well, Sergio, as you know, sometimes when you have tragedy in your life,
14:24the one thing you want to do is not think about it all the time.
14:26You want to do something to keep your mind occupied.
14:28And this is the craft that he is so good at as we look at power shots thrown and landed.
14:35And it has been all Giasov.
14:37You guys were talking a little bit about the lackluster performances as of late.
14:42And I do think his daughter's health had a lot to do with that.
14:45He would spend a lot of time visiting doctors around the world,
14:49trying to find the treatments that might work.
14:51And they take a toll when you're spending your downtime trying to...
14:55Oh, a body punch.
14:56Sorry, Chris.
14:57Just a nice little light touch with the right hand, Sergio.
15:01Picture, pinpoint, perfect.
15:02There was nothing light about.
15:04That was a straight right hand to the body.
15:05This fight is over.
15:06And Shakrav Giasov gets the knockout win he wanted.
15:11And in honor of his late daughter, congratulations to the Wonder Boy who wins here in Atlantic City.
15:18What a great man.
15:19What a great fighter.
15:20And, man, to be here, to do exactly what he's doing, it really is incredible.
15:27After his daughter's demise and passing, man.
15:30I mean, I got to give all the credit in the world.
15:32And God bless this man.
15:33So, Giasov now 17-0 with 10 knockouts.
15:38Sergio, he's been saying, look, I'm next man up.
15:41He wants a title opportunity.
15:43In your opinion, should he get it?
15:44Yeah, well, he's highly ranked, especially in WBBA.
15:47So, yeah, he deserves it.
15:49Ocampo, we knew that he was here as a B-side.
15:51But this is a man that hasn't been knocked out in 19 fights.
15:54He had amateur and Olympic experience as well.
15:57Giasov did the job, got the knockout, and it was with one punch to the body.
