Before ice arrived in Siam, how did people keep their drinks cold?

Well, today let's take a trip back to 1840.

Frederick Arthur knew, a European visitor during King Rama III's reign,

recorded an interesting method used at the royal banquet hosted by King Bin Glau.

Back then, cooling drinks, especially champagne, was a challenge.

So how did they do it?

Just like in India, they placed bottles in a mix of pitcher, salt, and water.

The salt lowered the freezing point, making the drink cool but not icy cold.

Ice finally made its way to Siam during King Rama I's reign.

Blocks of ice were shipped all the way from Singapore, packed in salt dust.
